[Q] [n00b] to vibrant

new to samsung all together...
been with motorola and SonyEricsson for ever and a day. My friend has a vibrant, and its pretty sweet.. thinking about getting one. Im NOT NEW to mods and editing, scripting or anything else...I have numerous hand built mods on my milestone... just new to samsung and the "odin" deal it uses to mod things.
he has the TeamWhiskey Bionix 2.1 build... just curious as to how solid that really is, and if its worth the download.
also... any other suggested roms/mods... im not a beginner, so dont be afraid to the throw a curveball at me... just looking for fun to try, since im 100% to samsung.

Welcome, And good to see your enthusiasim. All of the roms you can pick up for this device are pretty solid. I have made it a point to flash every rom I can get my hands on, and have been plesently surprised with how polished they all are.
I would suggest picking up a 2.2 rom, macnut, axura, onyx, obsidian, aosp'ish... and letting that take root on your vibe. And once you get a hold of that take a peak at the FFC thread ( Sorry if this seems condescending, but FFC is Front Facing Camera ). You will be glad you did, because the fact that the Vibrant can be modded in such a unique way makes me glad I have it.
Lastly have some fun with the plethora of Kernels available... Play with stock, get dirty with an OC/UV, or have a little fun with Universal Lag Fix... There are so many posibilities out there
Check the stickies, they have the best links to all these options
All is required it to root Vibrant to unleash the beast hidden inside it!
ODIN isn't used for modding per se, it is for one of these moments when you go "oh snap, i might've bricked my Vibrant"
Before modding begins make sure you can reliably get into recovery and download modes with ADB and manually.
All the tools and tips are available in the bible in the dev section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
And as with most *NIX systems RTFM my friend where available
Happy modding!
The link in my signature takes care of the basics to get rooted, get a recovery, maing backups...
For roms, I suggest froyo. There is also a link to what many prefer for froyo in my signature as well.
The Vibrant is a cake-walk and a tank, VERY hard to brick if you use common sense. The one thing to remember is that a nandroid does not restore a kernel 9moving from eclair to froyo and vice versa).
well after reading up on alot of them, im interested in the new Obsidian 4.2 and the AOSP'ish rom.
Now its this similar to motorola modding, where i just flash the rom & im done? ...or is there additional stuff that needs to be done? I keep hearing about this "LagFix" thing.. and im not really sure what that is, or what it does.
Im not the hugest fan of froyo, but TeamWhiskey seems to really know their stuff, so i just want to know how to get 2.2 loaded, so i can load these roms.
I have my milestone all tricked out, and custom edits to the build.prop, ect... but our roms are based on recovery images, not kernels, since the kernel isnt FULLY unlocked.
yep... getting the phone on wednesday! pretty stoked about it!
can someone point to the things i need to load the 2.2 based Obsidian 4.2?
im new to samsung & dont understand their extensions or how to load the new kernels.

Read the "Tips & Tricks" sticky.
You will need to root & install CWM.
But remeber, rooting your phone kills your warranty

[Q] Gingerbread, is it ever coming ?

Hello:
I just would like to start this thread wanting to know if you guys know when Samsung is going to release Gingerbread for this amazing phone. Since the last rumors that I heard said on March, now were on May and still nothing from Samsung and on top of that SGS II is already on the market and I feel that Samsung will forget about us...
I appreciate all the effort that people has put to port Gingerbread from the international Galaxy S and I know that are a few bugs on those ports, and not all the people will run to install it on their stock phones, specially, since to get Gingerbread at this point they need clockwork or odin and some knowledge on how to do the process, and that will keep it away from the masses; but still thank you very much to all the people that's working to get it for the Vibrant
Finally I would like to say that this community is the coolest thing ever and thank you all for making like that, best regards.

[For Devs] Guinea Pig phone ready

Hey MoPho's, How is it hanging in this hemisphere of XDA?
I wasn't able to post this in dev because I never post here, but it looks like this is the way to go for Dev work for the MoPho (I was pretty involved at ppc-geeks for the original touch pro's port of Donut then moved on to sdx-developers for the moment and the epic (which I am also turning into a guinea pig flashed considering I have abused it with all manners of nasty ROMs and tweaks, courtesy of ERA and the ever lovely ACS). I currently have 2 MoPho's, one of which is on network the other is my wifes who couldn't return it to the sprint store (franchised-not corporate) when it started acting weird. I bought her an Evo3D, but I am keeping her phone now because I am deciding to stick with this for the long haul! Lets see what you guys got, any custom builds or things you arent sure of, I carry all 4 phones with me during the day and am constantly noting bugs when there are some. If you want to use my phone for your mad sorcery then PM on here and I will get you my oter contact info (irc/gmail/mystic brain wavelength, etc.)
Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you guys, I'm here to support the development of this, at the moment, very small community and want to help it grow to be as diverse in ROM choice as possible. Let me know whats up!
Thanks,
LT

[Q] testers needed for a port

Hello guys, I'm killswitch and I'm normally over at the samsung captivate and galaxy s2 sections of XDA, but i have come here with a request. A little background story first: My friend got an HTC Evo design 4g because a cute girl talked him into getting it. Dead serious right now. He was disappointed to find no ROMS for his phone, and not too long ago i searched and found no roms either. He asked me to port anything for him, preferably AOSP since he hates sense. If i were to port an AOSP rom like CM7 to his phone, what are the chances one of you has an evo design you wouldn't mind testing the ROM for me with? I'd just hate to mess up and kill his phone. This would be my very first port, ever. However, if it makes you feel any better, i would be using a porting guide with very good feedback from here at XDA developers. I can post a link if you'd like.
On a similar note: for months now I've been wanting to get into ROM development/porting. Now is a great time for me to start. Anybody know where i can find a mentor/good starting thread/information?
All is greatly appreciated, thank you very much

[Q] Xyboard ICS Root, now what?

So Ive finally rooted my motorola xyboard 8.2 with ics running on it and now I have no clue what else I can do with it really. Thats about as modified as it gets for this device it seems. Granted this is only one of my many many tablets but its one Im stuck with because its on my verizon contract for a while. So anyone know of custom or other roms out, I have searched but found nothing. Im new to rom development so if I were to take this on as a project it would probably take forever as Im not much of a developer and more of an artist with some developing skills. Im hoping someone out there has done more to their device than just root it, if so please let me know of any tips or tricks or mods. I will continue to work on mine and see what I can do myself and post any info/developments.
thanks,
casper
U wanna know what u can do after root? there are dozens of root apps out there which are essential to have once rooted. And the ability to access /system folder is a cool thingy about this! seems like there ain't no much of development for this device due to the locked bootloader! (Screw moto for that!)
Sent from my OC ed mind.!
