I just got off the phone with tech support and it isn't on their system...of course, it is tech support and usually, they are some of the last people to know. But, considering how hard it is to upgrade to the leaked version, do you think HTC can take on the challenge and make the update fairly pain free?
Given the fact that we were told "Honeycomb would be released soon after launch" ... I'm not holding my breath and it really is unfortunate.
Can't even get ahold of the stock RUU for the US WiFi Flyer due to HTC's lack of updates.
My gut feeling, is they wouldn't have put all the effort into making a working HC ROM, if they weren't going to release it. Remember, the leak was beta. Presumably, it will take some time to go from beta to the release/final version. Maybe we'll see a leak for that. Even then, there is some lag time between when the final version is finished, and it actually starts getting pushed out.
From the HC install guide thread on Modaco:
If you're wondering 'why so many steps and why don't we just run the ruu'? There are 2 main reasons - firstly is the fact that you need s-off, which is generally the revolutionary bootloader, which protects itself from being overwritten - a problem as the new bootloader is necessary for HC. The second reason is that flashing RUU or rom.zip updates your misc partition version tag, which can seriously limit your options should something go wrong and / or you need to roll back to Gingerbread.
For the official HC update, it would seem that neither of these issues apply, so the official update process would probably be much easier.
Very unfortunate because the beta HC from HTC is very close but has enough bugs to keep me from using it. No US RUU means you cannot try out the beta and get back to stock and since Google refused to release HC source, not much chance a 3rd party custom ROM will fix problems like camera issues and other things on HC.
My suggestion for everyone to this repeating question, whether they take it is up to the individual, keep bugging @htc and @HTCUSA on twitter (if you have a twitter account)... Or find their facebook page and ask there. Those are usually worked by PR or CS instead of tech support.
Demand usually gets a result.
update
Here is what I asked them...
"Being the owner of several HTC Phones and enjoying their build quality, I recently purchased a HTC Flyer, thinking it would (as promised) get updated to Honeycomb.
Now, some web sites are reporting the flyer will not be updated.
I am now approaching my 30 day return window, so my question is, do I need to return my Flyer and buy something like the Samsung?
I really like HTC products but, I do want a device that (as promised) will get updated."
This was their reply ...
"Gary, We very much appreciate your loyalty to HTC and understand how it can be frustrating awaiting announced updates, especially when they take longer than anticipated to come out. We ask for your patience as the update is being developed and tested for your device. Thank you again!"
Guess we'll see
Edit ... I just sent this ...
"Thank you for your quick reply. As you know the official announcement was on Feb 11, 8 months ago saying the update to Honeycomb would be coming soon. The Flyer is approuching 1 year old and still no update. It seems like I may have to return my flyer and try another product. Thanks, Gary"
I am on the edge too about returning my Flyer. Friday is the last day I have to return it back to Best Buy.
I was generally more impressed with how HTC handled updates than Samsung, but seeing how this device has not recieved HC yet, I'm very much doubting that it will ever receive ICS. I am so much more interested in ICS than HC anyways. So I am thinking that I should return the Flyer and buy a newer tablet, Say the soon to be relased Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus which would have a much better chance of seeing an ICS update.
I really love the Flyer, but I am looking towards keeping a tablet for the long term...
The Toshiba Thrive 7 looks promising, but I fear a lack of dev support. Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus then???
I'm leery of Samsung since they are being battered by Apple to the point of delaying their Google / Samsung joint next big thing that was scheduled for Oct.11. I don't expect you'll see ICS on a tablet for a long time since Google hasn't even released the Application layer yet and that's the easy part. After that the HW vendors have to do the kernels and drivers and that's what taking so long with HC right now.

Talk to current galaxy tab 7 wifi users about Samsung and their updates. That tablet is a year old and hasn't received gingerbread yet. You'll always be playing that game. Buy a tablet for what it has now, not what It's going to have. Be grateful that we have a stable ROM that works well. Dell Streak owners were pushing for 3.2, now half of them are reporting bugs and others are reverting to froyo. I rather them take the time to get it right. A beta build means they're working on it.

I too like the Flyer but, I think I’ll go with the Lenovo ThinkPad … already has HoneyComb and a much better Notes app.

Yeah.... no, I tried to like the big 10 inch. I had a Asus Transformer which worked great, but no, just couldn't really love lugging a huge slate. I have a laptop which is much more capable for lugging. SO I am really digging the Flyer

But have you actually use it? I haven't tried the flyer..but the Thinkpad tablet I have an eval unit right now in front of me and it's horrible!...main issue I have with it is that it's really sluggish...and big!...also, palm rejection probably works like 70% of the time..so as I take some notes..I get specks of dots/lines around where my palm is...
I'm not impressed by the stylus pen so far. Maybe it is much better like they say in HC, but I haven't used it yet, so that was a waste of money.
The Flyer itself is awesome. Good hardware, quality build, great HTC Sense overlay on top of GB. I do like it.
I was unaware that Samsung hadn't released an update for the wifi tab after so long. That is discouraging. But I would really like a device that will see ICS.
If the flyer was dual core and or had a slightly higher resolution screen, I'd definately keep it. But right now I'm still debating.
All HTC needs to do is update their gingerbread built to support pen in any applications users wants it to work..and I think most user would be happy..
That seems to be the issue I've been hearing about the Flyer GB build? Is that right?

I only really have two complaints about the GB Flyer vs. HC. other than the pen.
1. The Sense widgets are huge on GB and the screen grid layout is sized for a phone, not a table. HC looks so much better.
2. The browser in HC seamlessly syncs bookmarks with desktop Chrome and other settings automatically are backed up in a much better fashion than GB.

I really doubt that HTC will update Flyer. I sent email to them asking about that. Their answer is not satisfying me. They say that I should wait, if there is update I will get a notification. That is really a bad answer !!!
The reason I bought Flyer is for Magic stylus. But, I am really dissapointed. There is no handwriting recognition. I may not need update, but surely I need apps that can maximize the use of stylus....
Cheers...

That happens sometimes with the Flyer too. They're both based on the same technology, but Lenovo's has handwriting recognition.
I do love the 7 inch form factor but, man, the Lenovo tablets are looking really attractive right now, especially with both a stylus and a keyboard.

Sorry for the little bit off-topic.
Samsung did upgrade my ex-galaxy tab 7 with GB 3 months ago. After the upgrade, things were smoothly but the chip is still 1G.. playing HD games were still slow. Anyways, I already sold it and bought the 10.1 and it was much faster... and nicer but too big for me.. and I sold it too after I saw a price drop for the flyer.
I am thinking to get the flyer since I really enjoy smaller tablet. 10.1 was nice but too big for me and my kids. I am thinking
1) flyer
2) galaxy tab 7+ (good size dual-core, HC ready and possible ICS in the future)
3) galaxy tab 8.9 (my prefer - I have tried it @best buy, really love the size HC + touchwiz was cool)
may I ask someone who have the flyer
1) do you see/feel any slowness playing games? since it is single-core. my ex-tab 7 was slow sometime.. but my 10.1 was so smooth.
2) how is the pen? my sons like to draw, is it worth to pay 80 bucks to get the pen?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Over the past couple days I've been doing some research on relatively inexpensive 7" tablets which have the potential for a smooth and stable build of ICS courtesy of the many fine resident devs here. After all, not all of us have the spare change to afford a Galaxy Tab Plus 7. I'll share my findings along with any pros or cons about the device in this context. If anyone has anything to add about a certain device or ICS requirements please do so. I'm still trying to arrive at a decision for myself.
Kindle Fire ($200)
-------------------
ICS probability: High (dev only)
Pros - Cheap, sleek and minimalist design, no soft buttons, Nexus S grade hardware++
Cons - Lacks many nice tablety features like a front facing camera, very limited storage options (8gb)
Notes: The KF does not have a locked bootloader so it's currently a dev's playground. As such, an ICS build has already been started on the device. Its still very early in development but the lack of smoothness is concerning considering it has the same GPU and RAM as the Nexus S, a device on which ICS currently runs like a champ.
Nook Color ($200)
-------------------
ICS probability: High (dev only)
Pros: Cheap, large dev scene
Cons: Dated hardware may not be enough to run ICS smoothly, like the Fire it lacks many tablety features
Notes: ICS is already running on the Nook Color, albeit a bit laggy. I'm unsure if it'll ever be smooth due to the older GPU it sports. However the large dev scene around this device cannot be ignored as it has CM7 running well on it.
Dell Streak 7 (230$-260$ varies)
-------------------
ICS probability: Med-High (dev only)
Pros - More fully featured tablet with all the bells and whistles of a Tegra 2 device
Cons - Iffy battery life, low screen resolution, capacitive buttons, discontinued hardware
Notes: This device seems to have a modest dev following and already has official Honeycomb. Once the Tegra 2 ICS drivers are released by nvidia (I think?), devs can get ICS going.
Samsung Galaxy Tab ($240+)
-------------------
ICS probability: Med-High (dev only)
Pros - Fully featured tablet for a great price
Cons - Highly fragmented dev scene, a little old
Notes: For the price, the vanilla Galaxy Tab is a great choice. Sporting the same internals as the Nexus S its very likely that this device will soon have a stable and smooth version of ICS running for it. However, there are so many different versions of this tablet that it makes the entire scene fragmented and much more of a headache in terms of researching and treading carefully around flashables to avoid bricking your device. Because of this fragmentation, the cheapest version ($240, wifi only) isn't supported for the current ICS build due to having an older GPU. Doh!
Acer Iconia Tab A100 ($250)
-------------------
ICS probability: High (dev+manufacturer)
Pros - Cheapest premiere honeycomb 7" tablet
Cons - Abysmal battery life, LCD isn't all that great
Notes: Acer has stated that they're going to put ICS on their tablets, so that's nice of them. The battery they put in it is on par with smartphone batteries, so not quite sure what that's all about.
Nook Tablet ($250)
-------------------
ICS probability: Low-Med (dev only)
Pros - Kindle Fire with more storage options
Cons - But you pay $50 more for it and it's locked
Notes: Currently the Nook Tablet is locked down. Locked bootloaders scare me as there are many devices which have still never been truly unlocked, like the Wildfire S. It's currently a gamble to invest in the Nook Tab if you're banking on an ICS future.
HTC Flyer ($250-$300 varies)
-------------------
ICS probability: High (dev+manufacturer*)
Pros - Best overall hardware of the bunch (cameras GPS etc), good battery life, honeycomb manufacturer release imminent
Cons - HTC Sense is hit or miss with people, priciest of the bunch, aesthetic is a mixed bag, single core CPU
Notes: There are two versions of this tablet, the flyer and the evo view 4g. The evo view is usually sold cheaper at around $250 but the dev support for is it isn't nearly as robust as it is for the flyer. I don't believe HTC has made any announcements regarding ICS on the flyer but it isn't completely out of the question to see it in a year or so. Needless to say, a dev version such as CM9 will hit the device well before HTC has their version up.
Those are the few I have been eyeing. Currently I'm leaning towards the fire for the CPU/GPU combo or the HTC flyer if I can cough up an extra benjamin. I reserve the right to be misinformed, so any opinions or facts anyone has can only help. Thanks in advance and I hope this helps some people!
I don't own a tablet but the flyer and the moto ZOOM are the best bets.
Htc is good about updates and the zoom is kinda like the nexus of the tablet world.

The Xoom is a great flagship Google tablet. However it's a bit out of my price range and is bigger than what I'm looking for being 10 inches. If only they made a 7" xoom!
The HTC flyer does get more enticing by the moment...

The flyer is pretty great. Very fast out of the box, and easy to root if you want to go that route as well.
No love for the Touchpad? (Hopefully!) it will get ICS in the coming months.

As with the Xoom, the Touchpad is a 10 inch device (a fine one at that!) I'm specifically talking about 7 inch devices, partially because they tend to be cheaper, but also because that's what I want

You sure it wise to invest in a tablet that moto might drop?
$1 gets you a reply
Even if the flyer is single core, that doesn't mean that it is behind the times or anything.
Check some benches Anandtech has put out for the flyer's single core punisher:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4463/the-htc-flyer-review/8
Future proofing from past examples has constantly shown that it's not always the route to take. With CPU's in mind, that brings me to the whole 64bit vs 32bit deal back in the early 2000's. When we had our first dual cores, improvement was definitely slightly better than single cores, but it's not like we are talking that two years down the line it'll greatly outperform the single core device.
That has more to deal with architecture, GPU and the likes rather than raw processor alone..
Oh and yeah, there is a $240 deal out for an Evo View 4G (2000 units, less than 500 left) on ebay right now if it's not sold out yet.
The view 4G is a promising deal, but as I said Dev support is limited. The question is, should I pay an extra $60 for tinkerability? I'm quite the flashaholic on my Droid incredible, so dev support is a big deal to me.

the 7" Galaxy tab has gotten really nice reviews, and i have also heard its lighter than kindle.
Lenovo A1 seems interesting. No dual-core seems the only major downside.
Hello,
I'm strongly considering getting one of the above, once the second one is available. The fact that the noteay have a stronger processor is a plus.
What should I be looking out for in these devices? What are niggles that would prompt me to check and potentially need to replace if found? Software bugs? Construction quality?
Overall use is going to be internet, everyday calendar, notes etc.
Thanks in advance!

If you're price conscious then the original tab is a great buy. Also consider that accessories for the 10.1 Note will be at a premium while a ton of stuff for the original tab are on clearance.
Wait for the note... The pen is surprisingly great (on the note 5.3 anyway), and the faster processor will be a nice upgrade, because the Tegra 2 in the original 10.1 tab isn't great... Very laggy... Yes it's better with cm9, but still not that good.
I have a gt-p7510 Galaxy tab 10.1 and I like it, but if I didn't already have it, I would definitely wait for the note 10.1.
Thanks for the replies guys. Really appreciated.
I too hate the lag and on video reviews of the note I thought it was very slow so good thing they are improving the processor.
I always wondered if you could use a stylus on the original tab. What is the upgrade that makes the note souh better with the stylus from the tab?

If you're planning to use it for note-taking, the note 10.1 is an easy choice. For everything else, you'll want to consider whether the faster processor is worth the price difference.
I would also wait on the note, even though it won't be out for a good while. I got the galaxy tab 10.1 a few weeks ago and am loving it so far. But this won't stop me from getting the note 10.1 the moment it becomes available (will have to sell this tab then lol). The biggest thing, for me personally, is the pen; stylus functionality isn't the best thing in the world when it comes to the original tab 10.1 even though it may be functional. But thats all it is, functional, not amazing or practical when it comes to taking notes (student's perspective). Of course the processor bump just makes it sweeter, I'm just hoping the price isn't too steep.
Would the Note have the same touch capability as the Tab if not using the pen? If so, then it was be a great plus!

Yes the stylus isn't required. The touch capability would be the same as the current tab, if anything better (highly unlikely) when it comes to using your fingers. The stylus just adds the extra dimension of certain apps that take advantage of that, such as iAnnotate PDF, Zenbrush, etc. And lets not forget the superb precision the pen will bring when it comes to drawing and taking notes. If Samsung puts in an AMOLED HD screen (Ok I'm seriously asking for too much with this suggestion) this tablet will be beyond perfect, IMO.
If price isn't a concern, I'd say wait for the Note. Why buy last year's model when the new one is right around the corner? The processor bump will probably be enough to justify the price difference, but I'm happy enough with my Tab to sit this round out.
as I have mentioned in other threads my experience with 3g model has not been good, as in Samsung stock experience.
The hardware is good, there is no denying of that of course, and if you can mod it you can get pretty good results (I am happy with the latest ROM I installed, Overcome + pershoot kernel).
Although samsung seems to be delaying ics upgrade in favor of new hardware and in my case in Spain I haven't received a single update to my 3g from stock HC 3.1, and stock is everything but functional after little use, not to mention no launcher hw acceleration so when you have a few icons, dragging them around can be infuriating, of course forget about live wallpapers, screen not refreshing certain elements after a while, reboots, and similar utter failure.
From what I am reading Asus is giving better support and motorola xoom already has ICS.
I even have a college at work who is talking wonders about a chinese tab (Onda?) which is much cheaper and already working with ICS.
I suggest you consider the manufacturer.
So here it is June. Any rumored dates for the Galaxy Note 10.1?
And will that justify a new forum, or will we continue with this one?

I don't have any of those problems with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Dragging icons is fine, live wallpapers work fine, everything refreshes as it should, and I've not had any spontaneous reboots. I'm not rooted and everything seems zippy and smooth. Best tablet I've had so far. I'd like ICS but I'm willing to be patient. I'm sure they have their hands full making sure it's stable and working properly with Touchwiz. Anyone waiting for it through a carrier should be angry with them, not Samsung. The carriers are the ones responsible for pushing the update and most of them drag their feet for some reason.

Untrue. LG and Motorola have been far worse. Again, any carrier locked device is at the mercy of the carrier, not Samsung. Samsung may very well have pushed the ICS update to all the major carriers but they haven't pushed it out to their customers yet. Probably because they want to shove all their own UIs and bloatware on it first.
I would be getting the tab sim free and adding a sim to it later on. I much rather not have a locked device if I can buy it depending on price. So I presume updating wont be an issue.

I just recently switched from the Iphone4 to the Galaxy Note....I was really planning on getting the S3 when it came out (I bought Note outright no contract from Craigslist) and the more I play with the Note...the less I want to switch. I mean they have the same specs except for the Note a bigger screen. Plus with the custom roms you can have almost everything a S3 has as far as features...why spend the extra cash for less screen and a few other features?
Oh and there is NO WAY IN HELL I will ever go back to Apple!

i747 GSIII: Qualcomm S4 1.5ghz processor Adrena 225 GPU, 2gb RAM, Better cameras (Burst and HDR shot, 720p front facing), Gorilla Glass 2.

Perhaps once 1080p screens become standard I will upgrade.
I would wait for note 2. I really like my note (i717) despite problem with custom radio for T-Mobile.
I agree I think the note is gonna be on top for a while... for a long while.

In actual tests on You Tube the Note's camera actually outperformed most others, including the S3, in picture quality.
Definitely gonna stick with the Note. I like to turn heads when using it in public. And nobody I know has it which makes it that much cooler. I can live without the slight upgrade in processing and ram.
When I had S2, I got my wife S2,
As now I have Note , I will get her get S3.
And I personally will wait for Note 2, bcoz am still enjoying Note.

If I hadn't picked up the Note, er, if the Note had never been produced, I would for sure be all over the GSIII, but I couldn't be happier with my Note. The GSIII is a great looking phone imho, but the screen size of the Note plus the SPen make it a winner for me. My first Android was the Captivate, followed by the Infuse, and now my Note. Needless to say, Samsung has my loyalty and it will take a huge offering to displace them. My next phone will definitely be the Note 2. I just don't see another phone topping the Note 2 based purely on my current Note.
I like the hardware style of HTC phones, but they need to make a 5.3+" AMOLED screened phone with a stylus to displace Samsung and the Note for me. Not to mention, bootloader unlocking is just something I'd rather not have to ever deal with, and I can't pull myself to stay on stock software anymore. I know it's simple enough, but it's still a nuisance to deal with bootloader unlocking. I haven't played with the newer versions of Sense either, but my phones always end up losing manufacturer overlays anyways, and so far, Touchwiz has been the most appealing for me as well.
Same goes for Motorola, I like the direction they've gone with hardware on the RAZR line, but I need this big, beautiful screen and pen, not to mention a removable back. I also have hated Motorola overlays all along, as it is just ugly and laggy on every Motorola I've played with. They also have the stupid bootloader issues that keep me at bay.
I really wish Nokia wouldn't have been so dumb and had adopted both Android and WP7, because again, I like their hardware. Maybe they'll open up to Android in the future, but that won't happen before the Note 2 is here.
All that being said, I have no complaints with Samsung hardware, as every phone I have had from them has been rock solid and sexy despite people always bashing their use of plastic. I suppose the only qualm I have is how the back of the GSIII is glossy and the Note 2 will likely follow in it's design footsteps, though I don't mind the back of my white Note at all...I just prefer the textured back of my Infuse or metal on my Captivate. I really wish the general public would stop bashing Samsung for using plastic though, I don't see it as detrimental to build quality at all, and no matter what people say, metal still scratches, scuffs and dents, and plastic still holds up great in drops.
If Samsung wanted to annihilate the market and forever hold my loyalty, they can feel free to read this post and make my ideal Note 2 =] :
*5.5-6" Super AMOLED Plus HD 1080p display
-if they could find a way, make it matte glass while keeping HD clarity...which would be tough, but possible in the future probably.
*GNex styling with textured back, matte plastic instead of glossy.
-or go a different route with something exotic...carbon fiber, ceramic, magnesium, etc. I would pay a premium price for premium materials. =]
*Full Wacom pen functionality/increased pen software integration.
*Even though MHL is getting better, mini hdmi out would be nice like Motorola has on some phones
*Bigger battery obviously, or even next gen battery technology when it comes to consumer devices.
*Next gen Exynos with LTE capability and an increase in RAM, which RAM increase is inevitable.
*Multiple internal storage options like the GSIII, I would pounce all over 64 GB internal with up to 128 GB with expandable.
*Padfone and/or Atrix style docking options. Not necessary, but would be awesome. I would like to see something like that Ubuntu docking setup, as it would make phones of the future truly all in one devices. Imagine having only one device with only peripherals to expand functionality...yes, the future will be awesome.
All of that is really unnecessary with how awesome I think my current Note is, but if they include any of that you can bet I will be throwing my money at them.

Four words, you might be wrong. With lots of proof pointing to the ASUS Nexus Tegra 3 Tablet getting Jelly Bean first there is speculation Jelly Bean will be for tablets only just like Honeycomb. It actually makes sense cause they had tablets running Gingerbread and to set tablets apart they gave us Honeycomb now theres ICS which is very similar to Honeycomb and I think Google is smart enough to know they need something else to keep people interested in Android tablets. Who knows but if you go back and read old post about Honeycomb before it was announced by Google everyone thought they would get they update on their devices but when it was anounced it was a let down cause it was only for tablets and I am willing to bet the next Android OS will also be a tablet only OS. I would also bet that every other new Android OS will be Tablet only from now on. But hey maybe I am wrong.

Three words, you are wrong. ICS was designed to make it simple for developing for both phones and tablets, hence why tablet mode is activated by a simple dpi change. ICS was made so Google doesn't have to deal with two different versions of software for tablets and phones, and both modes are built right in to one software version.
Plus, in the online Google play store, they just changed the galaxy nexus for sale to show hints at jelly bean, like the screen shown with a new stock wallpaper and different looking search bar, even right in the text description. It will be for both phones and tablets.

Hey fellow members of XDA, I hope you're all well!
Anyway, I have a question relating to Android phones. Recently, I purchased a Nexus 7 - I was previously an iOS user, but, after using the Nexus 7 - I found Android was actually on par, if not better than, the iOS experience.
So, although my original plan was to purchase an iPhone 4S - I have decided against that notion - and instead I am planning to buy an Android phone, and possibly even a Windows Phone - once Windows Phone 8 is released.
I will be using the phone for mainly internet browsing, social networking, music, movies, gaming, and perhaps even reading at times - although I already have a Nexus 7 for those, you cannot really take it everywhere despite the size of it, and no 3G/4G severely hamper it's connectivity. By that I mean, you can hardly fit it in your pocket.
Currently, I am thinking about purchasing either the HTC One X - or the Samsung Galaxy S III. Both are great phones, and while HTC has the advantage of Tegra 3 - and a staggering 0.1 GHz faster processor - the Galaxy S III has SuperAMOLED Plus, and it also has expandable storage. Both, in my opinion, are equal to each other: neither are truly better than the other, comprehensively, in any factor. GSMArena notes that the SGS3 chipset, the Enyxos, is not as good as the Tegra 3 chipset present in the One X. Tegra 3 is certainly preferable, since Tegra 3 offers a great gaming experience with exclusive games, such as the recently released Horn.
The Windows Phone 7 phones available right now, to me, are underwhelming, but if rumours are anything to go by, WP8 seems intruging, and may even be a possible contender to the current smartphone superpowers.
The deals I have found, though, note that the HTC One X is cheaper, however, presumably because it was announced earlier.
I have found a HTC One X available for £325 - or alternatively, on contract, £18.50 a month.
The Galaxy S 3, however, costs £410 (T-Mobile), and contract @ £22.75. (For purchase, both devices are second hand, but in Mint condition - boxed, unscratched, no faults etc.)
I used moneysupermarket to find the cheapest contract deals, and CEX to find the cheapest second hand, but mint condition, devices.
However, with the announcement of the Galaxy Note 2 at IFA, as well as, to a lesser extent, the Sony Xperia T (I think Sony phones are sexy), I am deciding whether to hold of for a couple of months. The Galaxy Note 2 may, however, be too big? I've seen the Galaxy Note, and it's a mammoth of a 'phone.' (Currently Galaxy Note users, can you comfortably use a 5.3 inch screen? And would you be able to handle a 5.5 inch screen? How comfortable is it in the hand, and are there times where the size just becomes overwhelming?)
I now think it would not be a good idea to purchase a phone now, a time where the next Nexus phone, and the next iPhone, are due to be released.
While both are most likely out of my price range, (£350 recommended, but £400 absolute limit - doesn't include top-ups, and for monthly deals, £25-£28 monthly - doesn't include upfront payment) would you think it would be worthwhile to wait until the release of the next Android/iOS/WP8 flagship phones, or do you think that nothing major will happen? By major, I mean the S3 or One X become virtually redundant compared to the newly released phones. I have seen recently that HTC are preparing a WP8 device, and are also preparing another flagship phone, for example, while all of us know that the iPhone 5 will soon be released, and the Galaxy Nexus is already approaching it's one year birthday.
Thanks for the help! I will listen to all suggestions, and I am also open to other phones available in the market now, or possibly in the future.
Please, though, do NOT mention BlackBerry's! Or any WP7 phones, at the moment.
EDIT: Ok, after researching the specs for the Galaxy Note 2 - it is basically an enlarged SGS3 - although it has 1GB more RAM, and it's processor is clocked 0.2GHz higher. In that case, I wont specifically wait for the Note 2.

TL;DR but if you want to get the note II just because of the processor you can overclock the S3 all the way to 2.1 ghz but I recommend not anymore than 1.8/1.9. The S3 is a great phone I have it right now.
Also the One X has a much faster CPU if you look at quadrant scores. But really you get 60 fps on all games basically and butter smooth.
Oh yes, I forgot that you could overclock Android devices... Nonetheless, I doubt 0.1Ghz clock difference will provide a completely different, and better, experience.
Wait for the next Nexus.

I guess I could wait a little bit, but, if I can no longer wait:

HTC is a pain to s-off and you have to remove your void stickers and take apart your phone and use a wire to do it....its not fun and very easy to render your device unusable....gs3 is incredibly easy if you like customizing...get a gs3...

---------- Post added at 01:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:10 PM ----------
a lot of custom roms and kernels have different radios in them and if you cwm then root your HTC without s-off first then you will not be able to use your WiFi and your device will constantly try to turn it on and kill your battery....so you can unlock it then cwm then root but unless you take it apart first and s-off then it's pointless to Rom it. otherwise you will run into problems. a lot of roms say s-on is ok until you flash and realize your WiFi isn't working...so HTC will give you pain unless you know your device 100 percent inside and out....if you do it make sure you touch the right contacts with the wire at the right timing or you just ruin your phone....had that problem myself and went and bought a gs3 plug it into Odin and let Odin do the magic for you with out opening up your device just to completely unlock it (s-off) gs3 is the way to go....HTC has better processors but they have to turn down the clock because there batterys are horrible....if you want speed and battery life and the option to customize get a Samsung...
