[Q] Bad signal with AOSP Roms? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just flashed Liquid Smooth 3.2 and love it, mostly for the simplicity and the extra battery life. The only problem I'm having is the fact that cell standby and phone idle are taking up the most of my battery instead of the display like it did when I had thunderstick bareback. The phone idle makes sense but cell standby doesn't.
I've done some searching around and get mixed experiences from people using AOSP, primarily thundershed and liquid smooth roms regarding bad cell signal. Overall, however, I'm gathering that AOSP roms have terrible signal strength, thus the cell standby taking up all the battery life.
I'm thinking that if I could find a fix to this so that the radio wasn't always at between 0 and 3 bars all the time, and searching for signal, thus draining my battery, I'd be golden with battery life for days.
I've looked somewhat extensively for a solution to this, but noone seems to really address it.
BTW, I think I have the latest baseband update:1.49.00.0406w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
and I have imoseyon's lean kernel 6.2.1AOSP

The problem is with the ril. It was hacked up so that data and everything will even work. With thundershed I didn't get great reception or so it showed but I didn't have issues with cell idle and standby using my battery.

ok, but i would think that with an AOSP rom, and since (I think) the ril is part of the open source, it should be able to be fixed...unless the battery use is a false reading...

I don't think htc ever released the source for us on this device.

[Q] Jump in cell reception?

Here's a bit of an interesting one. Ever since official Froyo release, I've been getting GREAT reception in my house. Previously, "cell standby" was responsible for much of my battery drain. The odd thing is, I have changed NOTHING. I haven't flashed for weeks. I'm running Adry's EC01 Rom(and radio), with Jt's 4/15 kernel.
Has anyone else noticed a jump in reception? Do you think it's possible Verizon changed something on their end to go along with this update? Quite curious!
I'd also like to add that given the better reception, battery life has been stellar. This confirms great battery life for my aforementioned phone setup, (at least for my exact device).
Is 4g rolling out in your area? Some were speculating that it might take the traffic strain off the existing network.

reception and bettery life rom

I didn't find anyones questions regarding the best rom for reception and battery life. I find that my phone goes into roaming mode a lot, and I was wondering if there are some roms that would replace the modem in my phone and a rom that would increase the battery life.
thank you.
Either your in an area where your service sucks or its possible you have a faulty phone. I've read complaints about some phones have horrible reception. ROMs wont improve your signal and data.
As far as battery, everyone seems to find their own method on what works best for them. Most of the roms are cooked with battery consumption in mind. Using set cpu to underclock while the screen is off is the most popular user method. Some roms have clocking settings already set to the devs liking. Youll just have to read through the development forum to find what roms have the features your looking for.
Also having low to no signal and roaming is probably the main reason your battery is draining fast.
oh I will check out some ROMs. My phone lasts about 8 hours with moderate use. I wish it lasted at least 12 hours.

Best ROM in terms of battery life?

Im using cm7 right now and I really don't like it in terms of battery life. What are u guys using?
the rom won't give you bad or good battery life, the kernels do. try the eclipse or kangbang kernel. also as you know keeping 4g on no matter what rom causes excess drain.
that's funny. CM7 is one of the best for battery life. have you tried out different radios? the MR2.5 worked well for me when i was on CM7. i've been switching around lately between a few of DroidTh30ry's AOSP ROMs and using the new MR3.5 radio. it's still been doing well.
in general though, i find that AOSP roms are much better on battery then Sense based ones.
[EDIT] yeah the kernal plays a big part to. i decided to switch back to CM 7 1.6.1, MR3.5(802) radio and using Tiamat's kernal.
the Imoseyon 'leankernal' does a really good job to
The latest leaked ruu is giving me amazing battery life. I mean I've went from 9 hours with out plugging my phone in to
25 hours using the stock battery and not changing my usuage patterns.

I'm getting excellent battery life from SkyRaider Zeus Preview on his stock kernel and the rooted 7/8 OTA radios.
Best ROM i've seen, period.
battery life is an awfully subjective topic, right up there with "best rom," "best kernel" and "best phone"
Don't forget "coolest car," "HOTTEST PORN,"AND "BEST WINE."

Amen, I totally agree with you!!
theres a lot you can do besides rom for battery life, but contrary to what is said above the rom DOES affect battery life. im on synergy and its great. but i also undervolt to 246 when screen off and run dconfig to kill apps when i get to 200mb of ram left. what ive found most affects battery life to be honest is how good your service is where your using your phone
Try this kernel
Gives me a ton of battery life!!!

Try Liquid Thunderbread....my favorite ROM, its light, fast and gets great battery life.
Shifts3ns3 has been the best for me, I just recently went through trying a lot of different roms

Fascinate CM7 standby battery drain

So i have a verizon fascinate and am currently running cm7. (first tried the stable release but niw a nightly). Im eeally liking cm, but since i got it my battery life is garbage. Basically the drain seems to come from either the android os sercice or cell standby. Whenever i leave my phone inactive for a while, when i wake it up the battery has dropped a lot and tge phone is very warm. I have been modding this phone for a while, but im no android programmer. Purely based on the forum searchi. G ive done on the issue, it seemsblike cm7 has an issue with my modem or radio.
Extra info: my 3g/2g signals seem fine (always 0% time without signal). Wifi connectivity seems fine. Im also running glitch's kernal altho the problem has persisted with and without it (i did do a kernel cleaning first). I used the "go from anything to jb vanilla" guide cuz i was having issues switching to mtd at first (sry dont have a link rite now but it was on xda) . I get occassional force closes, but not really a problem. When i did a titanium back up, the very first time i flashed cm7 i Did restore system settings, but i did not do that every time since then. Ive done a fresh flash of the stable mod around 3 times trying different stuff, but this one is niggtly as i said, and each has had this issue.
If looked around a lot, and wgile this seems common, no one has posted a consistent solution or explanation to the problem, so thats what im looking for.

You could flash jt's vanilla gb rom. That has good battery life.

Plus do you have an overclock?

I have had the standby battery drain on every CM7 version and Kernel tried so far including 7.1 stable,7.0 nightlies,JT's Vanilla, and PoolParty. It's even worse if I shut phone down and don't plug in. It will drop 50 to 75% overnight with phone not on?
Has done it with undervolting, overclocking, and voltage control not even installed. This is first time I have seen others having similiar issues.
I think this is a known issue for all MTD roms on the fascinate, if I'm not mistaken.

I lose only 5% to 10% overnight on CM7 never really notice how much on MIUI cause I never ran it long enough. I guess every phone would behave differently for MTD's or maybe you have an app or mulitple ones that refreshes frequently(Fancy Widget comes to mind).
Well that really sucks, because i do enjoy cm7. But this also means if i go back to a touchwiz configuration like stock dl09 i shouldnt have these issues right?
But before that, has anyone who had these issues tried anything (ie kernels or maybe standby mode power conservation setting, etc... ) that have at least noticeably improved your battery life? Right now mines pretty unbearable (im talking 8hrs while on but totally inactive), but if i can get it up a little i might b able to manage.

I am also experiencing poor battery life. I just flashed 7.1.0 yesterday and absolutely love it. Was using com rom for a few months, but a friend said to try out cwm 7. I used to get about 6 - 8 hours of Pandora while at work and today I only got about 4 before my phone shut off. I'm going to try completely killing battery and charge with phone off tonight an see if it's any better tomorrow.
Any other suggestions? I'm not a noob when it comes to custom roms and flashing (I used to flash the **** out of my G1) but there may have been something I over looked when switching to cwm7. I wiped everything a few times before flashing including battery stats and dalvic.
My battery life is actually really good. Running latest nighty, undervolted -75 across the board, stock kernel, and no overclocking.
Just can't figure why I lose 50-75% of battery overnight when phone is shut down and not charging?
I have the same issue with CM7.1, turning phone of at 80% battery at night to find it at 25% at morning
Is there knows solution?

WiFi signal strength had gotten weaker?

I don't remember exactly when it started, but the last month or so my WiFi signal strength had been a lot weaker on my phone. I want to say it started when I started using ASOP roms, but even back in a sense Rom now, I can't hold a signal even one room away. It's not my router because other phones/laptops still get a good signal.
Any ideas on potential fixes to improve signal strength? I'm s-off and on Ineff Deus 1.2 at the moment. Tried different kernels with the same results.
Not much I can say, I get better wifi reception on CM9. Holds out way more than it did on senseless ROMs.
Wipe and reflash?
Already clean flashed a couple roms. Doesn't help. Now I'm just on LTE all the time, so not a huge issue, but of course battery drain is much higher.
Did you recently replace the battery cover or have it off a lot ? The contacts could be funky for the antenna..
