Best Recovery? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The ones i know of are clockwork, something like TWRP? and another one called 4EXT or something like that. Can you guys give me input on which one is better and some of their functions?

I like 4ext because it uses touch screen and you can charge the battery while in recovery.

4ext is my favourite however having a gs2 I cannot have it :/ so second best for me is cwm!!

+1 for 4EXT as well. Not only is the touch interface real easy to navigate but it even has extra options like converting your partitions to the 4ext filesytem from 3ext (stock filesystem)
***Note: as far as I know, you can only convert to 4ext filesystem if the ROM you are running can support it or you will have problems.

The kernel must support it too but I think all the thunderbolt kernels do. +1 to 4ext best money I've spent on an app.

This is about Recovery software. Titanium is a backup and restore app. The Recovery mainly allows you to flash custom ROMs, however there are plenty of more goodies that you can tinker with in Recovery.

I prefer TWRP over CWM (in recovery mode) . However, I like the ROM Manager app for CWM and am tempted to replace TWRP with CWM so I can use all the features of this app.
(Haven't tried 4ext yet, so I'm going to install it and check it out for myself)

4ext but it does cost money about bill gates type of money. For those who are broker then a crack head on pay day use cwm

Recovery Options?

Ok so i just ordered my new HTC EVO 3D off ebay since my EVO is officially done, so my question is, after looking through the DEV section ive seen a lot of information on TWRP recovery and im wondering are there other options like with the EVO.
For instance the EVO had TWRP, Amon RA, CWM, ect..
The reason i ask is because ive had a pretty bad experience with TWRP so im reluctant to use it with this phone when i get it.
I used clockwork before I got twrp 2.0

I made a handful of code commits to TWRP at the beginning of the project.. The project was started as Amon RA announce he was "retiring" essentially from updating his recovery to work with EMMC devices.
The EVO 4G was an MTD device so Amon's recovery worked well. The EVO 3D is an EMMC device so Amon's recovery would not work.
Personally, I've had good success with CWM as it is consistent across devices and I haven't had issues with it across the handful of Android devices I've had.
Ultimately, the decision is up to you. I only use the basic features in the recovery, adb shell access from recovery mode, nandroid backup/restore and ability to process a .zip. These three basic features I use are essentially the same or at minimum very similar across the different recoveries.
Different custom recovery's will offer different features, different support and different UI/themes.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
I use clock work mod. Alot of others use Twrp but I rooted my phone with the old revolution method and I have never had any problems with cwm.
I can't get clockwork to stick for some reason. Haven't figured it out yet but twrp is awesome.
I haven't compressed the backups but it's a nice feature that saves space. And I read that 2.0 is crazy fast at backing up and restoring. Took me 1592 seconds to restore the recovery partition tonight. Long ass time.

If you want CWM to stick for good, install it from Rom Manager. I have never personally used TWRP and hear it's amazing but I doubt I'll ever switch after using CWM for years and have no reason to. /endrant

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192077
I tried twrp 2.0 didn't like it, it would quit in the middle of a wiping process and I would have to reboot into recovery again but it does have a touchscreen interface so some might find that useful. I used CWM like somebody else in this thread said it wouldn't stick I had the same problem. My favorite is twrp 1.1.1 never had any problems at all and the best part is you can flash multiple zips all at once. Oh! one more thing. I found out when using CWM wiping davlik cache would sometimes not work.
Twrp is my vote non touch version

CWM Recovery discussion

I saw in NilsP's rom thread that people have been working on clockwork mod recovery to see and get it working. I read that with a file copy and an advanced setting you can get backups to work. The main problem being the infamous charging bug.
Here is what is posted in that thread.
punman said:
I wasn't aware of this but when you plug the phone in, it boots what looks like a mini-recovery kernel. I suspect something with this isn't supporting the battery charge. I am going to flash back to Amon Ra and see what the differences are.
Just select "backup to external SD card" in ROM Manager Settings. You might have to enable "advanced settings" to get the option.

OK here is where I am as memories come back.
If you select backup to external and set progress off it does not actually turn off progress unless you copy the hideprogress file from internal to external. The bad part is the backup hangs if you don't copy the file.
When you select install ROM from SD Card it shows what is on the internal card to select not the external.
I have not tried a restore yet but I remember if you do it from RM it deletes the boot (kernel) but can't restore it due to s-on. Gonna test that in a minute.
EDIT: Backup and restore worked fine after copying the hideprogress file
EDIT: Just had to select internal from the menu when selecting install ROM from SD Card in RM

Yep. I recovered my original GB after using an early CleanROM ICSE ROM. I think I used Scott's CleanFlash tool to flash back the correct kernel for GB.
All my recoveries have backed up flawlessly since, but I am currently only running stock rooted. Haven't tried recovering any ICS backups.

And since I bought ROM Manager while using my DInc I'd prefer to use CWM. It's a reasonable, personal choice and I've never let my batteries fully discharge, so never had charging issues.
And I don't avoid full discharge because I use CWM, I avoid full discharge because it's actually bad for the batteries.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with the N64. I still love it and play it with my friends almost every weekend. I didn't intentionally make it analogous with CWM and Amon Ra or anything: since I used to use CWM on the Incredible and now I'm using Amon Ra--but I just really love N64. I'd take it over the Wii any day.

LOL. Some get and some don't. It works the same as cwm just without issues. It's amazing and annoying to see people posting almost daily on charging issues yet they refuse to use amon ra because they are comfortable with cwm. I to was hesitant to use it at first but quickly felt like I was in a familiar place once installed. My Rezound has never seen cwm. I have seen the light and I am just thankful there are other options.

I think I mentioned earlier that I had no issues charging. But I am also not saying that Amon Ra is bad. Just that I have a preference and that I know how to handle/avoid the pitfalls.
Interestingly, there were many in the DInc threads who didn't like CWM or ROM Manager, but no one there made snarky comments about personal choice... (not talking about you, snowride)
I think any CWM thread will just devolve like a Sense thread will. At least in the Rezound forums.

Trying to remember what was so great about AmonRa. From what I remember it was just a prettier CWM. Somehow I must've missed these other variations of it but from my memory it was pretty basic when compared to TWRP. Maybe I didn't stick around with the OG EVO long enough. Hopped ship soon as 3D was released then left that for E4GT.

[Q] Recovery: Revolutionary, TWRP, or 4EXT

Currently running Revolutionary and it seems to be slightly out dated... Would you guys still recommend staying with Revolutionary, or switching to TWRP or 4EXT?
Also, what is a safe way going about uninstalling the recovery and replacing it with, lets say, 4EXT?

4ext hands down. When you install 4ext it replaces the original recovery. No need to uninstall anything.

4EXT is the way to go. I haven't used TWRP, but 4EXT does everything I need it to do and does it well. I've never had a single issue installing ROMs, backing up, restoring, formatting, never had to wipe multiple times before installing anything. Everything just works.
Just flashed 4EXT via the App. Worked beautifully and everything seems to be fine. Finally away from Revolutionary although it seems to be fairly similar in functionality, just no touch.

But would that be any better than clockwork mod recovery?
It wouldn't be hard for it to get into 4ext.
All it would have to do is light up (especially easy if I have volume wake enabled) and pull up the apps. Then if it decided to hit 4ext app, anything could go bad there.
That's just why I don't like touch. =/

How would I go about re-installing 4ext back over TWRP?
It seems that TWRP is "using" some elements of 4ext.

Best Recovery

Hi,
I have just rooted my device and I am thinking which is the best and most stable recovery to install. Anyone who can give their opinions. I am mostly thinking of installing Sense 4.4 ROMs
I don't know if there's a "best" recovery since they all do the same thing just in slightly different ways. Personally I've been using twrp and have heard that clockwork is slower, but that's it. They all work fine, just personal preference.
Was just wondering, havent played around with my DNA such, So wanted a recovery which allows with to flash all the ROMs without trouble. Thanks I installed TWRP recovery
