OOPS! Flashed a sgs3 Kernel insted of an sgs2 Kernel -- bricked ? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just recently upgraded my phone from Gingerbread to ICS (SGS2)
I need to get Root going , so I decided to install a Kernel.
I used Siyah's Kernel here:
http://gokhanmoral.com/
Specifically this one "SiyahKernel SGS2 v3.3.2"
However, before I installed that, I installed the SGS3 Kernel first (and it fialed via ODIN)
"SiyahKernel S3-v1.2.6"
Question -- Did I brick my phone ???????
Because I've been trying to reflash the other SGS2 Kernel and it's not working....
Odin is just Freezing. Is my phone messed up ? What do I do ?

did you try flashing a GB firmware? also try a one package file..instead of flashing only the kernel try flashing a gb firmware then flash an ICS rom

You might want to try the appropriate forum, this isn't Q&A

Flashing different kernel never harms the engine.. But still phone doesnt bootup and i think ur CWM got screwed up with S3... ODIn freezing? U sure u not using KIES?? U must uninstall KIES but must retain the Samsung USB drivers.. Try it

You should make a decision according to your own conditions.

Can you get in download mode? Home + VolDown + Power. Plug the charger to see it it charges. If you can't get in download mode your phone is hard bricked and can only be repaired with a jtag. This reminds me of the people who flashed the SGS1 kernel...

Firstly, This is a development forum, not a n00b flashing wrong things needs help forum. if you want to create topics or ask questions do not do it in thsi forum, do it in general or Q&A.
Second, if you have bricked your device I have no sympathy as you should check what you download/flash and where you download it from.
Go into download mode and flash stock fw.

Questions go in Q&A not Development. Moved.
Cheers
PS: Make sure you have usb drivers set up. Use a Mobo USB port. Run odin as admin (my personal thing) and make sure you have good tar files and usb connection.

Just Flash a new kernel with recovery and then reflash your ROM. No data should be lost.

[Q] Samsung's leaked ICS : kernel panic

Hi guys,
as you know some days ago, Samsung has leaked their SGS2 ICS firmware, which I learnt on sammobile.com.
In their article, was a tutorial to install it, so I did.
I tried it a bit, but have been desapointed, so I decided to flash back to MIUI.
Thus I first flash another kernel, but here my trouble start.
Long story short, if I don't use the leaked, buggy firmware, I have a "Kernel panic - upload mode" and Kies does not recognize my phone to flash it back to stock.
I figured out that in the tutorial I have been told to change some file I've never flashed (like the pit, the modem and I think the CSC). Files that I don't know anything about. So I thought that those files weren't compatible with previous kernel etc. but as I don't know much, I can't be sure...
So I am know with a very buggy phone (for instance, I cannot be phoned, but I can phone to people) or a kernel panic. Help please :/
By the way, if someone could explain the meaning of those files, it would be cool, not to do the same mistake again.
And as I think : in all the tutorials using ODIN, it's said the I must not check "re-partition", what is it about ?
Thanks, and sorry for my poor English
Some updates here.
I thought yesterday, as there were those files (.pit, csc and stuff) in the downloaded archive on sammobile to flash leaked ICS, there were in the others firmware too, and I was right.
So this morning I flashed back to official 2.3.6 and it worked well. Then I flashed to xcell kernel (for Miui) and tried to flash MIUI 2.1.6. The kernel flash worked, as I rebooted normally but after flashing MIUI, another kernel panic :/
Did you wipe before flashing MIUI?
I did it after flashing, but still before rebooting.
Is that a mistake ?
If you wipe after flashing then your phone won't even boot.
So I think you did not wipe at all.
Yes I did, and I tried once again just now, wipping before flashing, but after the Samsung GS2 logo, still the kernel panic screen.
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Then read and learn before flashing anything else .

Where can I find the correct stock firmware ?
I'm kinda lost with all the versions and stuff.
And when flashing, I would like to know what I do, but noone, nowhere, explains what we do, just "do that stuff and it will be good".

You shouldd stop flashing and start READING THE BASICS you are flashing test roms from complete ignorance .
Stock firmware here you should know what your firmware is .

Ok, I admit it, I was dumb doing it :-/
So now I am under stock both kernel and rom (2.3.5) and Kies says that there is an update but my phone isn't ok to do it, but that is not what I want.
I wanted to reset my phone through Kies to be sure all would be set to stock, but now Kies doesn't let me do it, there is no option to do it.
I think that the rom, even if official, is not good for my phone.
On the topic you linked, I choosed XXKI4 (France, if I understood well) for the rom.
Kies says my version is "I9100XWKJ2/I9100XEFKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100XWKJ2".
And my phone says :
- Banseband : I9100XXKI4
- Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI4-CL611039 [email protected] #2
- Version number : GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2.
Is that all ok ?
What I would like to do is flashing MIUI 2.1.6, so is it good to do it now ?
Make sure you have flashed back the old bootloaders, see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21146446&postcount=2
Ok so I flashed an old bootloader then a custom kernel and to finish the latest MIUI and everything went well !
Thank you, guys !

Softbricked with damaged USB - What are the options?

Hello!
A softbricked i9100 just fell on my lap for me to try and fix. I have access to CWM 5.0 and I believe it had a MIUI ROM before it was softbricked, probably installed around 2011. It has all the signs of a bad USB port, so no ODIN for now (I have ordered a spare part). Also, let's assume it has the insane chip.
Since I don't know a whole lot in terms of flashing, etc, I have been reading the tutorials. However, I would greatly appreciate any input/advice on my options.
What I want to do is to make it as stock as possible until the spare part comes. I was thinking of flashing something through CWM to make it stable and ready for a future JB stock flash when the USB is up and running again. However, I'm a bit scared of flashing stuff without knowing what I'm doing. Can anyone point me in the right direction for the proper kernel and rom to flash, considering all of this?
Many thanks!
Download proper stock rom and flash it via mobile odin.

It's softbricked, so I can ony access CWM.
EDIT: I'm concerned about just putting any ROM through CWM, since I don't know what kernel is in it. This might be a stupid question, but can a ROM be incompatible with a kernel to the point where it hardbricks it?
Sorry for bad post.
If you already sortbricked try first install custom kernel like syiah after that instlall rom compatible with that kernel.

[Q] Rooting/Kernel/Rom Recommendations

Hi guys.
First up hello. Im a refuge from the Ace section, have a Galaxy SII due for delivery over the next couple of days so Im moving over. On the Ace I flitted between CM7, CM10 unofficial, Lewa and a few others.
Im generally used to rooting via stock recovery and then using CWM to do everthing else, not familiar at all with ODIN as I have never needed to use it. Standard UK SII, unlocked running Gingerbread.
Have read around this section and will continue to do so for a few days, but a few starting pointers would be nice.
Rooting/CWM/Kernels
Whats the easiest way for rooting the SII, preferably from stock recovery
Whats the easiest way for installing CWM?
What the best basic Kernel out there, or Kernel that will do an AIO Root/CWM/Kernel job?
Im reading a lot about this hardbrick lark with ICS, is this purely an issue with stock ICS roms, and its fine to go down the CM10 route?
I can use the search feature, but as Im sure you know thats not always the most productive route.. Although I shall use it in the meantime.
Cheers.
You can learn a lot just by reading peoples problems, and the answers given.
For rooting, you would normally just flash like a siyahv4+ kernel with Odin.
That gives you root, cwm and safe from brickbug.
Theres several other ways also like exynos or doing stuff via recovery.

How have i avoided ODIN so long.. hmm, Siyah 4.
Do you know how cumbersome the search feature is here, finally found the download for v4.1.15 (and then realised it was in your signature), now im trying to find the instruction to install via ODIN,. If you happen to know offhand, the exact thread that would be appreciated.
Regarding roms, Im assuming CM10 is the standard, not familiar with any of the devs over on this side of the fence.
Ok, from what I can gather
Download Keis and make sure all drivers for the SII installed
Download Siyah-s2-v4.1.5
Disconnect your phone from your computer
Start ODIN
Click the PDA button, and select Siyah-s2-v4.1.5
Put phone in download mode
Connect the phone to computer
Make sure repartition is not checked
Click the start button
Wait for the phone to reboot
correct???
(sorry, i suffer anxiety, one of the side effects is double checking anything before doing it)
If your on ICS, you can download that siyah kernel, but make sure you get the .zip type.
Get the 1st and 3rd file in the ics rooting guide in my sig.
Stick them all on sd card.
Boot into recovery.
Flash the 1st file-which is temp cwm
Flash the 3rd file-which is su/busybox
Then flash the siyah file-which gives you permanent cwm and safe kernel.
Then reboot phone.
Then you are rooted, with cwm and safe kernel.
The easier way is obviously using odin.
Ps.hope you aint got the g model.

No, its not the G..
It is on gingerbread currently though, not ICS.
GB ffs......lol.
Right you can update to ICS (pain)
or
Set up Odin and flash siyah s2 v2.6.14.tar file
or
Try exynos abuse (may not work on GB).

I shall go S2 v2 route then. assumedly i can then just flash cm10 iwthout any problems.
Yes GB model, but no, not GT-I9100G
Youll need to check what the install instructions are for the rom
Eg if you need to be on GB or ICS.
Ive never used it, Ive just read you need cwm though.
If possible I would first update to ICS via Kies or OTA then afterwards flash Siyah v4 via ODIN. Once you have done this you are ready to reboot into cwm and flash away. Remember to wipe data/factory reset in CWM though after flashing Siyah kernel and before flashing new rom.

Ah, ive been reading on problems with ics and hardbrick, i guess that is prevented by flashing siyah post update.
Thanks guys, sorry for the noob questions, im not a noob, but rooting always makes me nervous (a hangover from the days when flashing the bios on the pc was a dangerous hit and miss affair), i just like to double check.
Once im rooted and got CWM im back in familiar territory.
Any other general tips on making the leap from Ace to SII appreciated.
Dont you just love it, when the phone arrives and its pre rooted with siyah and cwm

[Q] Messed up flashing a ROM. Not sure what to do.

OK, so i have no idea where i went wrong but here we go.
I was flashing my phone (i9100 for reference) with the latest Neatrom ROM. seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569686
from a stock samsung firmware on my international galaxy s2. so its not branded or anything. ( with virgin moblie canada if that matters... ) anyway booted into recovery. ( after putting the .zip file onto the phone ) and updated in the stock recovery to the Neatrom. THen i wiped dalivk and the normal cache. and rebooted.
i got the samsung logo and yellow triange..
tried factory reset
same thing.
(at which point i forgot to back up the phone like an idoit)
tried to use triangle away. ( got confused and gave up, never really even tried because it was a .apk and i didnt know how to launch it from a phone stuck on boot)
tried ODIN, by flashing the base samsung stock rom for virginmoblie canada phones.
and this is where i really got confused. the phone says that it needs to be connected to kies. so i installed kies ( because i never used before ) and kies wouldnt recognize the phone. ( also at this point the phone wouldnt go into recovery mode at all so i was really freaking out )
i then flashed siyah 6.0b5.tar on ODIN to the phone and thank God it flashed and the phone now went into recovery mode and i tried flashing neatrom agian and i was back to the start ( samsung boot logo with yellow triangle )
( i then flashed the stock rom and went back to the whole " please connect phone to kies, and the computer wont recognize it )
now i dont know what to do. my first idea that comes to mind is to reflash siyah kernel, after that im at a loss.
Any Help would be amazing
You need to successfully go back to stock & get a 'clean slate'. Then you can flash whatever custom rom//kernel you want again from there.
You've also gotten yourself seriously confused re: Kies & flashing with Odin. It's the opposite; you don't want Kies or any of its processes running (check & kill them in Windoze Task Manager if they are) because it messes with Odin. The reason Kies gets mentioned re: Odin flashes is because in order to use Odin you need to have drivers installed on the PC, and for many people the easiest way to do this is to simply install Kies.
I very much recommend to do an advanced search of Hopper8's threads & find his 'Odin won't flash' thread. I'd be very surprised if you can't end up successfully flashing the phone using the info in that thread.

Will try in a couple days ( i dont have my phone right now forgot it at home and im currently moving )
will post results
so go back to stock and get a clean slate should i reflash the siyah kernel through odin and flash a stock samsung rom?
just making sure here
Why would you 'reflash the siyah kernel through odin and flash a stock samsung rom?' if you've already just flashed a stock rom through Odin ? Take some deep breaths, lose the panic & re-read my last post slowly.

[Q] Can i get 4.04 back?

Hi all.
The usb connector broke on my galasy s2 and had to take it to service.
All i asked them not to change my 4.04 version. But they did it anyway! Jeesh!
They put the 4.12 on it, which doesnt suit me.
Is there a way to get 4.04 back?
Can i just flash my previous 4.04 back with odin?
Or use stock recovery or CWM recovery to install the whole package?
When i had 4.04 i did a full backup with CWM recovery, but the file size is so small so it cannot contain the whole OS.
I come from Nokia world where downgrading was not possible so thats why im asking before trying things on my own and breaking it.
Please help.
Thank you.
Yes you can use Odin to go back to 4.0.4......but I'd advise you go to 4.0.3 instead.......4.0.4 stock firmwares are affected by the emmc brickbug which has turned *some* S2s into irrecoverable paperweights.
Whether your phone is one of them or not.....I don't know (you can check this)
For the firmware, go to www.sammobile.com/firmwares to find the correct firmware for your phone/carrier, download, unzip to tar and flash via Odin......simples
sent from either my Alliance powered S2 or my ArcoCM powered W via XDA Developers App
Find which variant you have first. Go to about phone in settings and see if you have I9100G or I9100, if you have I9100G we have all stock firmwares on our development forum, i advise you to go there, i don't know if our variant has emmc brickbug but you can search it.
Thank you for the replies.
I once ran the emmc brick bug check and it said i dont have the bug
My phone is I9100.
Is there anything i need to know about odin, or just connect, click PDA, choose the Firmware and hit start?
I downloaded the correct stock FW from sammobile.
Thanks again.

Yes, if you get bootloop wipe data from recovery.
Just to report back.
I flashed the old 4.04 stock firmware with odin.
Flashing went fine, but when rebooting the phone got stuck at the samsung logo and didnt go further.
Removed battery, put it back, booted stock recovery and wiped everything and phone worked.
So all went just great :=)
This was my first android flash and after this success i might wanna concider some custom ROM:s like cyanogen, but thats another story.
Thanks for the tips peeps.
