[Q] Can i get 4.04 back? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
The usb connector broke on my galasy s2 and had to take it to service.
All i asked them not to change my 4.04 version. But they did it anyway! Jeesh!
They put the 4.12 on it, which doesnt suit me.
Is there a way to get 4.04 back?
Can i just flash my previous 4.04 back with odin?
Or use stock recovery or CWM recovery to install the whole package?
When i had 4.04 i did a full backup with CWM recovery, but the file size is so small so it cannot contain the whole OS.
I come from Nokia world where downgrading was not possible so thats why im asking before trying things on my own and breaking it.
Please help.
Thank you.

Yes you can use Odin to go back to 4.0.4......but I'd advise you go to 4.0.3 instead.......4.0.4 stock firmwares are affected by the emmc brickbug which has turned *some* S2s into irrecoverable paperweights.
Whether your phone is one of them or not.....I don't know (you can check this)
For the firmware, go to www.sammobile.com/firmwares to find the correct firmware for your phone/carrier, download, unzip to tar and flash via Odin......simples
sent from either my Alliance powered S2 or my ArcoCM powered W via XDA Developers App

Find which variant you have first. Go to about phone in settings and see if you have I9100G or I9100, if you have I9100G we have all stock firmwares on our development forum, i advise you to go there, i don't know if our variant has emmc brickbug but you can search it.

Thank you for the replies.
I once ran the emmc brick bug check and it said i dont have the bug
My phone is I9100.
Is there anything i need to know about odin, or just connect, click PDA, choose the Firmware and hit start?
I downloaded the correct stock FW from sammobile.
Thanks again.

Yes, if you get bootloop wipe data from recovery.

Just to report back.
I flashed the old 4.04 stock firmware with odin.
Flashing went fine, but when rebooting the phone got stuck at the samsung logo and didnt go further.
Removed battery, put it back, booted stock recovery and wiped everything and phone worked.
So all went just great :=)
This was my first android flash and after this success i might wanna concider some custom ROM:s like cyanogen, but thats another story.
Thanks for the tips peeps.

have you gone to recovery and wiped data?
or find a firmware which wipes the data off the phone, i think the KL1 firmware does this.
buddy i cant get into clock work or any other sort of recovery as my home button does not work
can you link me to the correct firmware
would be appreciated xmas good will
you can find the original kernels and firmwares here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
search and subscriptions are a handy thing to have. Merry x-mas, hope you get to unbrick your phone!
cheers guy ive been to that site you have linked but still no avail when flashing the stock orange uk ones for my phone will take your advice nex and look for a kl1 to wipe the date
it really doesnt matter which one you flash, just flash the one which wipes your device completely and then flash back to the firmware of your manufacturer.
do you know any of the top of your head which flash them phone whole???
Please read the whole guide that is in the link and then use one of the firmwares that include "This firmware will wipe your device!" warning... for example DXKG3.
heres the firmware and files im using
if you're from UK use this KI3 Wipe firmware http://www.multiupload.com/NJV6PR87Y3
it should do a wipe therefore making you're phone bootable. go back into download mode and install speedmod kernel, which would also root your phone automatically. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498 ( flash speedmod-kernel-s2-k2-18-Odin.tar in odin).
use something like ROM manager to get into recovery mode and install VillanROM http://www.villainrom.co.uk/SGS2/VR3.0beta.php and a kernel of your choice and away you go

[Q] Samsung's leaked ICS : kernel panic

Hi guys,
as you know some days ago, Samsung has leaked their SGS2 ICS firmware, which I learnt on sammobile.com.
In their article, was a tutorial to install it, so I did.
I tried it a bit, but have been desapointed, so I decided to flash back to MIUI.
Thus I first flash another kernel, but here my trouble start.
Long story short, if I don't use the leaked, buggy firmware, I have a "Kernel panic - upload mode" and Kies does not recognize my phone to flash it back to stock.
I figured out that in the tutorial I have been told to change some file I've never flashed (like the pit, the modem and I think the CSC). Files that I don't know anything about. So I thought that those files weren't compatible with previous kernel etc. but as I don't know much, I can't be sure...
So I am know with a very buggy phone (for instance, I cannot be phoned, but I can phone to people) or a kernel panic. Help please :/
By the way, if someone could explain the meaning of those files, it would be cool, not to do the same mistake again.
And as I think : in all the tutorials using ODIN, it's said the I must not check "re-partition", what is it about ?
Thanks, and sorry for my poor English
Some updates here.
I thought yesterday, as there were those files (.pit, csc and stuff) in the downloaded archive on sammobile to flash leaked ICS, there were in the others firmware too, and I was right.
So this morning I flashed back to official 2.3.6 and it worked well. Then I flashed to xcell kernel (for Miui) and tried to flash MIUI 2.1.6. The kernel flash worked, as I rebooted normally but after flashing MIUI, another kernel panic :/
Did you wipe before flashing MIUI?
I did it after flashing, but still before rebooting.
Is that a mistake ?
If you wipe after flashing then your phone won't even boot.
So I think you did not wipe at all.
Yes I did, and I tried once again just now, wipping before flashing, but after the Samsung GS2 logo, still the kernel panic screen.
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Then read and learn before flashing anything else .

Where can I find the correct stock firmware ?
I'm kinda lost with all the versions and stuff.
And when flashing, I would like to know what I do, but noone, nowhere, explains what we do, just "do that stuff and it will be good".

Ok, I admit it, I was dumb doing it :-/
So now I am under stock both kernel and rom (2.3.5) and Kies says that there is an update but my phone isn't ok to do it, but that is not what I want.
I wanted to reset my phone through Kies to be sure all would be set to stock, but now Kies doesn't let me do it, there is no option to do it.
I think that the rom, even if official, is not good for my phone.
On the topic you linked, I choosed XXKI4 (France, if I understood well) for the rom.
Kies says my version is "I9100XWKJ2/I9100XEFKJ1/I9100XXKI4/I9100XWKJ2".
And my phone says :
- Banseband : I9100XXKI4
- Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI4-CL611039 [email protected] #2
- Version number : GINGERBREAD.XWKJ2.
Is that all ok ?
What I would like to do is flashing MIUI 2.1.6, so is it good to do it now ?
Make sure you have flashed back the old bootloaders, see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21146446&postcount=2
Ok so I flashed an old bootloader then a custom kernel and to finish the latest MIUI and everything went well !
Thank you, guys !

I9100 LPJ possible brick?.

Hello I am from Argentina, desperately need help.
I rooted my SGSII ICS 4.0.3 phone with CF Root LPJ everything went as expected. Odines PASS! and all but when my phone reboots it just turns off after logo screen with triangle.
I can get into recovery and download mode but that is all.
What should I do?
Might commit suicide if there is no fix.
Flash stock rom.
You can find it at sammobile.com.

If you can get into recovery and download mode, you are only softbricked. It could be worse.
Please be more precise, I lack experience but I will understand.
Which stock ROM should I flash now?
Because I got a downloaded I9100UHLPS_I9100AROLP4_ARO but it is not LPJ.
I also managed to find Kernel_I9100XXLPJ at intratech. Would flashing this kernel fix it? Could it possibly mess my recovery mode and brick my phone?
Flash the same ROM again using Odin, do not flash the wrong kernel.
ARO is a good ROM, just flash it again, it will boot, then root with the cfroot for that ROM later.
What do you mean by the SAME rom? I got this problem flashing a CF-Root kernel not an entire ROM.
The ROM I had before was ICS 4.0.3 which I upgraded officially via Kies.
Should I flash ICS 4.0.3 UHLPS that is for my region? I9100UHLPS_I9100AROLP4_ARO
I'm pretty sure that's what Atifsh meant, yes.
Thank you all! Thanks given with the button for all!!!
I flashed stock ICS 4.0.3 for my country downloaded from sammobile.com and the phone recovered with no trouble! I got my soft bricked SGSII working again!
Is there anything I need to wipe now to make sure there is no crazy leftover from the CF-Root boot fail?
If it's working fine, then probably not. I mean, you could always backup your contacts, call logs, SMS, etc and your apps with Titanium, do a factory reset, and then restore contacts, call logs, sms and user apps/data only (do not restore system apps or data).
But if it's working fine now, I don't see the point.
I want you to do two things for me tho.
First, get kTool either from Google Play (it's free) or from Hellcat's thread on here. Then backup your EFS. Keep one copy on your external SD card in your phone, and keep another copy on your PC. Then I want you to do a Nandroid backup in CWRecovery.
That way if anything does ever go wrong, you should be able to recover/get up and running again easily without losing your stuff. For example, if your phone ever borked & you had to send it in for warranty service/replacement, you could restore that backup when you get your phone back/a new phone.
Do a backup at least once a week and certainly every single time before you flash a new kernel/rom or if you make major changes to your system.
I am afraid of doing anything with this phone now. First experience = soft brick.
Damn I almost die. Now I need to find a way to get out of this stock 4.0.3 ICS because it is ramming through my battery and is as slow as a potatoe.
4.0.4 is eMMC hard-brick possibly if I wipe after flashing.
Now I feel like an expert.
I also tried flashing cf root today and it softbricked my phone. Weird.... next time I try to root my phone, I wont be using cf root.
Which Kernel was yours? Leave it here logged for future brickers.
Mine was LPJ

[Q] SSN: i9100GSMH soft brick??

Hi All,
Noob here with what I think is a soft brick issue.
Under the battery it says Model: GT-i9100, SSN: i9100GSMH
Originally Gingerbread, then I upgraded to 4.03 via official Kies firmware release.
Couple of days ago tried to upgrade to 4.04 using ODIN and got a fail at factoryfs.img. probably used the wrong firmware.
Could still get into download mode at that stage, but can't anymore. I tried to install a couple of different firmware versions of 4.04. I can still get 'added' when I connect to ODIN though.
Can somebody please help me to upgrade to either 4.04 or Jellybean? I'm willing to go fully custom, just don't know how to do it....Can I do it with ODIN? Do i need a new kernel or pit or something?
Thanks heaps, really appreciate any help.
Cheers,
Jackson
Given you can't get into download mode (and I presume the phone won't boot & you can't get into recovery either ?) it's either a JTAG or service centre job.

Hi Mistah Bungle, thanks for your reply.
So is that even though the phone shows up as added in ODIN?
J
If the phone shows 'added' in Odin (yet the phone show no signs of life whatsoever; you still haven't clarified this btw), then you might as well try flashing a stock rom & see what happens. I mean, the phone's borked. It probably won't work, but it's not like you'll bork it worse if you do try another flash.
Forget about upgrading to 4.0.4 for now. Just download a stock firmware for you phone no matter Gingerbread or ICS. Search this forum, you'll find many links. Connect your phone to Odin and try flashing the downloaded stock firmware. Once you get it up and running, you can try upgrading it.
In this situation, it wouldn't be wise to go for a custom firmware. Your best chance of bringing your phone back to life lies in successfully flashing a stock firmware.
No problem if the screen isn't showing anything. I remember Vibrant behaving like this. Just flash the firmware once Odin detects your phone. If the flashing fails, disconnect, take out the battery and start over.
Good Luck!
Hi Guys, thanks for the updates. I'll try to suss out what the correct stock option is and try my luck. and yeah, for clarification purposes - the phone doesn't respond to anything bar an Odin connection as far as I can see. Cheers again )

[Q] No IMEI leads to boot loop? help!!

Hey guys!
So once again I find my self asking for help.
So my phone decided to forget it's IMEI so I started following THIS guide.
The guide asked me to return to stock to somehow get the IMEI back.... so I followed THIS guide.
The problem is that after I flashed the phone I got stuck in the "Samsung Galaxy SII I9100" screen (where one gets the yellow triangle)
SO I thought to myself , meh it's a boot loop....so I followed some steps that had previously saved me.
But ever since the first flash I've not been able to access ANY sort of recovery, be it CWM or the normal android one.
I have access to download mode but that's it really....
Please help!
If you've got no recovery & the only option you've got is download mode, flash a stock rom. Then do a factory reset if you need to/assuming you get recovery back.
Then you can restore a backup/re-root your phone/flash whatever kernel or rom you want.

Thank you for your quick reply.
Here's the thing. I got the stock rom from here and it's the first thing I flashed as a kernel yet it got stuck in the first screen.
I doubt i made a mistake here (because I checked with my phone´s "about" ) but Maybe I got the wrong version? (would it stop working if so?) .
Get one for your country/carrier from Samfirmware & try that (Be careful if it's 4.0.4 & don't do a wipe until after you've flashed a 'safe' kernel).
Success! I got recovery mode.....
(used Cf Root)
Now how do I go to stock?
If you've got CWM, try flashing whatever kernel you were using before you started having problems (You haven't been using Rom Manager by chance, have you ?). If you still don't have any joy, try flashing whatever rom you were using in CWM.
If we're talking stock recovery but the phone still won't boot normally, still flash a stock rom in Odin.
Nope, no ROM manager.... I had what seemed like a stock ROM , just with a different baseband to work in the UK (it's a mexican phone).
Anyways i'm back to square one..... I tried flashing the stock kernel that I looked for in Samfirmware (the mexican, just in case...) and it's still stuck in boot loop... and again I have no access to recovery...... tried flashing CF to no avail....
argh <.<
You need to try flashing the entire stock rom in that case.

So it will be the same? or is there a different place to get the ENTIRE stock rom?
I got the one you mentioned from sammobile... will this include the phone / csc/ things?
by the way..... will it get out of the boot loop?
thanks for your patience...
Go to Samfirmware & search for an entire stock rom (which will have kernel, modem & CSC) for your country if there's an unbranded one, or get one specific to your carrier if there isn't unbranded.
Will it get you out of bootloop ? You'd think so, but without knowing exactly what caused your phone to throw a wobbly in the first place, it's hard to say definitively. But at the moment, you don't really have any other option given your phone won't boot normally & all you have is DL mode.
Edit - I've checked Samfirmware, there's 3 for Telcel; 2.3.6, 4.0.3 & 4.1.2. You can probably skip the GB one & choose either of the other two
And you're welcome

Ok, finally finished the download.
I'm soon to flash and I have a dumb question....
should I unpackage the file or flash it to the kernel as is? (its a.zip)
if I extract it it contains the .tar.md5 and SS_Dl.dll
Extract the tar.md5, flash it in the PDA section of Odin. Delete the .dll

Just before I break anything.... since this wasn't working just yet (and your explanation explains alot haha)
I got CWM again and I restored my previous mod /build whatever its called......
So I have a working device again. The question then is...... (and completely changing subject) IS there a way to resolve the no IMEI problem from this point?
I dail +#06# and get a blank imei thing.......
Any suggestions?
Forget the code. Check your IMEI in settings/about phone. If it's not 0049-----, then you're fine. If it is & you don't have an EFS backup, there are a bunch of threads on here which claim to be able recover your IMEI; you need to read them (No idea whether these methods work as I've never had to use them & never will because I make EFS backups). Either that or service centre who can fix the IMEI.
Edit -Also, I'm, rather confused. You claim you have nothing but download mode, yet all of a sudden have CWM working ? Sounds like you've left a lot of details/a lot of what you've been doing out. Bit of a waste of my time answering your posts in the end really.
