[Q] Which ROM and how? - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I stopped using my Streak over a year ago when I moved to Sprint. I'm going to Europe for a month so I need to go back to the Streak. I haven't been keeping up with the ROMs on the Streak so looking for some quick advice. What are the key differences between DSC 1.1, Longhorn 2.8 and CM7.2 RC0? My key criteria is stability. I also need Google Maps and wasn't sure if freezing it for DSC meant not being able to use it. Beyond that, I'd love to have extended toggles in the notifications area. Also, is there a guide to upgrading from StreakDroid to one of the new ROMs? Thanks.

Guides for upgrading ROMs are all over the place so please use the.search to find them. As for DSC, you would be better off using 1.0 rather than 1.1, until 1.1's data bugs are pinned down.
Freezing an app renders it unusable until you thaw it.

For me Longhorn 2.7 work better than 2.8

If you prefer stability, then I recommend DSC 0.73c or PowerROM Evergreen for you...
The other so far still give a li'l laggy experiences in daily use in my case...didn't know with longhorn 2.x though...
Sorry for my bad language, the only language I'm good at is body language
Sent from my Dell Streak running MIUI 2.4.20 (not official)

Ive had a streak now since they first hit the shops and have played about with every custom rom going.
I found to date the most stable rom to be MIUI 2.4.20.
I never had any issues with this rom whatsoever and would highly recommend if you want functionality and stability.
---------- Post added at 05:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:02 PM ----------
Ive seen some people say that MIUI 2.4.20 for the streak is laggy but i find as with every custom rom if you overclock with setcpu this makes the rom much more responsive.
I also found that the rom i mentioned was stable on the highest cpu setting which is what i ran with it and had no problems whatsoever.
Spare parts is also a good app to use as you can set the responses to fast which also eliminates the laggy experience which is not desirable.

[Q] streakdroid

I have been doing a little research and wanna give streakdroid v2 a go.. i have been looking for links but ones i have found are dead?
I am new to this and have not customised my streak or any phone before how easy is it???
any help would be great
many thanx
DJ Steve's download links worked for me, here is the link to the release post:

It's fairly easy to get going, use this thread it is great for newbies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776883
its a pdf by Radddogg that walks you through everything you need to know on your streak, I highly recommend.
PS, while its up to you, you might want to try 1.9 first, seems to me to be a bit more stable which could be good if your new, but thats just my 2 cents.
If you've never done this you definitely don't want to use StreakDroid 2.0.
Go for Simple Streak which is close to custom or use StreakDroid 1.9.0
Streakdroid 2.3 Beta2 (BB: GAUSB1A140314-EU)
I flashed this ROM coming from Fards. After flashing the Beta2 ROM i also experienced issues that was mentioned in the [ROM] StreakDroid 2.3 (gingerstreaks much nicer younger sister) thread. In first flash battery lasted for about 6-7 hrs (that was from 100%-dropped to 1%). Got the following details on my phone.
BB:Unknown
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-perf
OEM: streakdroid2_3b2

I used to flashed the ROM several times. Install Dell Stage APKs and GB_Streak5v01-1.zip then i noticed that the drop of battery charge was becoming smoother and end up to phone details below.

Ok gonna try what you've done.
I have some questions about 2.3 too. I've got a lot of experience of installing different roms. The streakdroid's kernel fro 1.6 to 1.9 made my phone buggy and the reason was somewhere in phones' memory. I had no such problems with SimpleStreak 1.3 beta 4, but I couldn't run Teamviewer and had problems with slow remoteability (lags when fast remoting lists of albums in PowerAmp and photos in gallery).
---------- Post added at 07:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:00 PM ----------
And now about Streakdroid 2.3. First I had so bug bunch of problems that think it doesn't worth to be used. But I've read that practically all problems are with faulty installation of the firmware and followed steps from post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17245130&highlight=bug#post17245130 .
At first phone worked smoothly and I thought that the problems has gone. But that was a mistake. Firstly I had noticed that one problem that is only come with Streakdroid 2.3 - the lag when playing music in Poweramp whatever the buffer is - didn't dissapeared. Teamviewer started to not to work suddenly. Lists suddenly began to freeze while remote. The touchscreen began unresponsive for a couple of seconds when I was playing while the game continues to run smoothly.
Can you give me any advice me anyhow?

Just take note that it is still a work in progress. So some of our apps may not work in this beta version. But we can still find some solutions by reading forums. In my situation i was not able to run Need for Speed Shift and still searching for any possible solutions in every forums that i think relevant to my case.
PS: re-flashing the ROM may solve "SOME ISSUES"

i am aware that it was already asked several times not only in xda forums but also in forums at modaco i am expecting to have an "unknown" baseband but there is one odd result after i re-flashed the ROM i got this baseband GAUSB1AS140314-EU but now everything seems to be normal. the rom is pretty stable and of course "unknown" baseband.

Like any other question of this sort your gonna get some varied answers. My pick is GSB by workshed. That's what i've been running for a while now.
My reasons are:
- #1 It runs fast (even faster if coupled with the SuperCharger, 3G & Kernel tweaks by Zeppelinrox)
- Launcherpro, which it contains, is a great launcher! Quick & customizable
- v3.8 has been very stable
- Everything works (maps issue is not a GSB issue btw)
It is, sadly, no longer being developed though so v3.8 is it unless someone else picks up where workshed left off.
gersto is right!
I really like Marcodroids MR8 then I use Zeam as a launcher. You might try it. Use Titanium Backup - Pro recommended and flash several of these. I'm not into Sense ROMs as they bog my little ERIS. Macrodroid also has another ROM EverVolv you might look at.
Good luck! Bottom line is "Flash and Find out"
D
I have tried them all..and for me CS by far has the best ROM. It's stable, fast and has a small footprint ..he has created a stripped down version which has really done wonders for my phone.. All of the developers are great ..don't get me wrong. Just use their roms and if you don't like it, use another. Just don't go and flame the person..They do this for all of us and for them as well.Hope this helps.
Tazz AOSP.....Fastest Rom out here. CS rom is right behind it though!!!!
Best GB rom which i like,
gsb, cm7, omgb pure gingerbread.
All are best check it yourself, and which one suits best for you.
I have tried all the GB ROMs and I always come back to TAZZ AOSP. It is fast and smooth. It runs really well with no problems. No flash, just a really solid ROM.
I prefer v5 for some reason, but I just noticed that Tazz is working on a v7 and needs testers.
Condemned's CM7 rom is my favorite. Its the rom I have had the best luck with but Tazz's rom's are really good too.

I've been pretty happy with GSB, but it's the only Gingerbread ROM I've tried.
Where is the CS ROM a couple people mentioned? I looked several pages in the dev forum and didn't see it listed.
On page 1. Condemned soul version 19.

Thanks. I figured it was an abbreviation for something, but didn't make the connection.
Flashed AOSP-Gin-Tazz last night and am happy so far. Will give Condemned Soul a try next.
I've tried evervolve, CondemnedSoul, and GSB and they all have their quirks. All run really good though and the devs are very responsive. My favorite though is GSB. I've ran every version since 3.2 and I always come back to it. It's the most responsive and most stable for me.

[Q] Best Android Version For Hero?

after flashing all versions of android I m still confused which version is best for our HTC hero 1.5, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3??? What do u say..???
or say which android version do u use?
Right now I actually use 2.1 and I find it fast. Way faster than 2.2 and 2.3. I can't really find many limitations except the notification power widget!

yes you are rite I too find 2.1 best for hero...
I also use 2.1 and I am completely satisfied with this version. Well, on the other hand, I haven't tried 2.2 and 2.3. Personally, IMO hero's hardware is not suitable for the higher versions.
---------- Post added at 10:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:49 PM ----------
And I would also make your question more wider: Which ROM do you think is the best for Hero?
In no particular order, my 'best Roms' for hero;
Elelinux final Android stock/special edition
VillainRom 13
Vanilla eclair 6
Froydvillain 1. 7
Tesla
OMFG
Gingervillain (hopefully !!!)
Still think the only Rom we lack is sense 2. 2, reckon hero latte would join the list when complete or chocolate froyo
Well, when I was asking a question about a favourable ROM, I could have added mine
It's VanillaEclair6.0 - its creator promises to publish a 6.1 version tomorrow so probably it is going to be my favourite for next

For me villain 13 and vanila eclair 6.0 but I like sense a lot so I stick with Villain rom..?
I only stick to Gingerbread ROMs because I want all the latest updates, and I won't use 2.2.1 or lower on any phone because it still has that text bug that sends your messages to the wrong contacts
Gingerbread works quite well on the Hero though, even with Sense
I have been a Hero user for about ehm 3 months now. and got my phone with GB. But then I tried some 2.2 roms. Speed machine and Floyo. Both nice.
And then VR13 and VR12, VR12 beats 13 hard on. mostly because it is way more stable... and then I tried VE4 cuss my friend was like DO IT... And I was like It looks lame...
But then I was amazed XD and today I tried Sense 2.1 on GB and I was like. Omg I have to wait for the menu to pop up for 3 sec... 3 sec... just gone... So I went back to try a sense 2.1 rom. Ele reloaded. Awesome rom. Love the sense part. then VE 6 Wich I am still using now But I am gonna do some rom stuff myself. I hope

It would be interesting to know what is the usage ratio between sense and no-sense custom roms. I know it is not possible to gather such information so that the outcome would be truthworthy, but would be kinda interesting to know.
Well I consider myself a veteran Hero user
I was a flash junkie and I never did anything to change the rom that the dev who made it.
Now I am changing roms and doing my own thing on it. And well the best rom I think there is. well non is the best.
Every user has his/her own taste.
ATM I am the sort of the dev of Vanilla Eclair 6 series and I like it very much, but 1 thing I hate the most. That is the crappy BT support in it, I am now trying to get that rom to have the BT support 2.2 roms have. Then for me that rom would be awesome.
I was a big fan of sense. but since you can get the stuff sense has with free alternatives and it uses less resources on the hero and you can customize more I go for AOSP roms or CM roms.
I prefer AOSP Roms cuss of the simple fact those run the smoothest on the Hero and uses almost 0 battery in Idle.

[Q] which 2.3 rom has a working gps?

hey guys.
the title says it all. i want to update my phone to 2.3 but i need gps like really bad cause my job involves driving and it has to be reliable accurate and on the money.
there are a couple of roms out there that i am willing to try on the weekends just to try them out before i go with them permanently.
can you guys please recommend me a few. i care about gps the most more then anything else. cause i need it for work.
please and thank you in advance.
p.s. if the rom is stable, doesnt do reboots or get stuck etc etc would also be great cause for me time is money as i dont get paid hourly but per delivery
thanks again guys
Miui has working GPS but like all roms has other bugs and quirks.
I ran miui for several months and I to use my gps for work.
I just last week ended up going back to a stock 2.2.1 sgs rom for other reasons.
I havent had any luck with 2.3 roms and gps yet. Read that others have so maybe it's just my phone. I'm still searching for one too.
I've tried trigger 8/22, GingerZen and Simply Honey, which others have had gps success with (to some degree) but I haven't.
Still waiting for one to work for me.
I've had good luck with GPS using MIUI based ROMs. Most recently I have been using Revamped SS which gives me fairly strong GPS reception as long as I am outside and away from tall buildings.
Seconded for MIUI. Been using it for navigation around Cincinnati with no hiccups. If anything, it holds a lock better than Froyo did.
I'm pretty sure all have GPS "working". I've tried most of our 2.3 ROMs and the GPS werks as well or not as well as it has before on any firmware.
miui.us 1.9.30 is the first miui i've used. it's gps works perfectly.
I have had the best gps of a Samsung custom ROM in "RevolutionRom JVQ Final Update 2". use bullet kernel supplied.

[Q] Stock Vs Cooked (Reboots)

With regard to (seemingly) random reboots, do the stock ROMS ever behave this way? Every cooked ROM I've tried likes to fall over fairly frequently, it gets a bit tiring after a while.
I can't comment about the stock roms but I can assure you the Power Rom series (Evergreen) is rock solid. I haven't had a random reboot since....well....ever.

I have installed Longhorn, DSC and Gingerstreak as well as the stock 407 ROM. The 407 ROM gave me the least reliability issues, I can only think of a couple of FC's (probably more to do with the app than the OS) and I have only ever had a few glitches. I used 407 for about a month.
The others I have had FC's and reboots and SOD's at least once in any given 24 hours. Now, I am starting to think that this could be partly to do with the fact I have been using Titanium Backup to 'restore' the apps (and their data) to the phone, rather than going via the market and doing a 'proper' re-install. I am seriously starting to think that may be causing some of the issues.
I have also made sure to wipe the dalvik cache whenever I have a problem, and I now do that after installing a batch of apps.
So, my conclusion is that GB generally is not very reliable - either from the perspective of reboots and crashes in the case of cooked ROM's of from the point of view of WiFi/GPS and other quirks in the stock ROM.
This is why I returned to stock 360 Froyo - which is ABSOLUTELY solid - no FC's reboots or SOD's in sight. I am now back trying to get a GB ROM of any persuasion to work - but so far it has not proved possible.

I would like to try this evergreen ROM and the other power ROM, but I think all the links are down for the 'non-evergreen' version. I also do not understand why there are 2 ROMs in the 'power ROM' series - any pointers would be appreciated.
I have also read that the developer has now suspended support on these ROM's for the next 4 months - which is a bit of a concern if that is true!

I have to agree. I'm on the last available stock ROM from Rogers in Canada (339), and I really don't have any specific complaints about the phone. It's also solid, I get no reboots or FCs.
Only problem ever is with WiFi. Whenever I change networks (such as going to a friend's house), even if it's a known network the WiFi won't ever want to connect to it first try. Sometimes all I can do is disable then re-enable WiFi and it'll finally connect. No reboot needed, but it's still an annoyance.
I've been thinking about moving up to the 407 stock ROM just to try it, but if there are occasional issues with it maybe I should just leave well enough alone and stick with my stable Froyo.

I would go back to Stock 360 (Froyo Retail) in a heartbeat. It is way more stable and reliable than any GB ROM I have used - even 407. The WiFi issues are much worse in 407 and I see a lot of comments indicating the other GB ROMs do not generally fare much better. The ONLY reason I use GB is because of Sygic SatNAV which does not perform well under Froyo but is fine with GB - that's it.
I guess Dell are all done now, so we just have to choose which ROM we can live with. At the moment, by carefully installing 407, then rooting it and removing the excess baggage etc I seem to have a GB ROM that's about as good as GB gets. Generally stable, quick and responsive and the little cursor widget which I love. Still not as stable as the latest Froyo but for now it seems good enough.
If you do not have a reason to upgrade beyond wanting to try out the GB experience, then I'd suggest you don't bother as it's hardly worth it. If you have a need (FF camera support etc), then 407 Stock is the best I have used.
