Recovery mixing up external and internal - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

the title says it all, i have wanamlite v12 rooted, i installed speedmod k3-20 this morning and noticed that recovery is mixing up my internal/external..... for example when i click on install zip from sd card > choose zip from internal it takes me to the external.....
the main problem is that it creats backups in the internal.....
anyone has an idea what can i do ?

Am i the only one with this problem ?

No you are not.
I have accidentally formatted my Internal Memory instead of my External a long time ago.
Simple way to avoid this problem is to Browse the files through recovery, using Internal and External options.
and see what is what.

[Q] CWM different versions - lack of support for external_SD?

I've just experienced that there are different versions of CWM (recovery)
When I flash CF-root kernel, CWM v4.0.0.2, it support access to external_SD.
When I flash Siyah kernel, v2.0, I get CWM v.5.0.2.6, and I can't access external_SD.
Can someone explain to me what the differences is with this CWM-versions and if the kernel itself has something to do why I don't can access external_SD in the last mentioned kernel.
dont know how you got it working in 4.0.0.2 because i cant. Please share your secrets lol
ricey
That is really weird, considering that CWM was made generally for all phones. Since SDCard is already used by the internal storage, there isn't really support for external sd card.
emmc is the external sd card, which cannot be used by CWM.
I don't think the link to external sd card works in CWM.
Hmm.
You guys got me start doubting myself.
But here it is with(Cf-root) and CWM v4.0.0.2:
1. Install ZIP from sfdcard.
2. choose ZIP from sdcard
3. choose external_SD/ from the list. Remember there are more folders showing up when you press volume up key.
4. Folders/files on external_SD shows up. I have folders for MP3 and movies, and backups from Titatium (set to external SD in Titanium) and its definately not on internal SD.
Doing the same thing after Siyah-kernel, with CWM 5.0.2.6, in step 4 above the screen just blink and noting happens. But when I go back to the main screen it says: No files found. And if I repeat step 4, the main screen shows a No files found for every time I have tried step 4.
So with CWM(v4.0.0.2) from CF-root kernel I definetly can browse external_SD, but not with CWM(5.0.2.6) that comes with Siyah-kernel(2.0)
Again, I don't know if this, the lack of External_SD access, has to do with the CWM-version(5.0.2.6) or the Siyah kernel?

Wiping all my internal memory! BAM!

Hi all. I'd really really like to delete all my internal memory before trying my next custom rom!!!
As I search for different custom roms to try it drives me a bit nuts that my internal memory has loads of stuff left there from previous installs of apps, ROMS and whatever-the-hell-else-I-can't-recognise etc. I delete the folders I'm sure I don't need but it still bugs me the amount of rogue, seemingly uneeded folders and files sitting there. All these folders and files from old apps despite doing the standard factory reset, cache, dalvik cache steps makes me crazy!
So here's my question: can how can I safely nuke all my internal memory before putting my next custom ROM on to try?
I suppose I'll I have to leave the actual custom ROM .zip on the internal memory somewhere - I've read that clockwork recovery can't access the external sd card. I was sure clockwork recovery could access the external sd card on my old Nexus 1. .
Anyways, any advice would be much appreciated! I'd like to avoid software bricking my phone if I can avoid it!!!
If you are on stock Rom > turn off your device > hold volume up+ home + power till it boots into android recovery.. perform a data wipe from there.. it'll wipe everything (not the external storage).. your phone will be like it was when u bought it.
And older versions of the official clockworkmod recoveries don't support external storage. Newer version do I think. ( needs clarification!!).
Alternatively you can also use chainfire's clockworkmod recovery. It supports external storage.
(Note: clockworkmod recovery only wipe the system partition. All your personal data will be intact.. but the stock android recovery wipes everything!!)

Thanks for the reply!
Unfrotunately I'm long gone from having a stock recovery. I have "clockworkmod recovery v5.8.4.3" although I'm not sure whether it's the chainfire one or the other one. It has the hat with the circle icon in it and is the blue monochrome menus. While it does have an option to mount an external sd, I can't seem to browse to my external sd when I choose install zip from sd card. Despite whichever folders I mount on the external sd card, only my internal memory appears to come up when browsing for install zip from sd card.
It would be nice if one of the recoveries out there could do a full wipe of internal memory! Unless that would delete the recovery too. Is recovery installed in the internal memory or somewhere else on the galaxy s3?
Bump! Not just because I like my post at the top but seriously, don't all those silly, un-necessary folders and files drive anyone else crazy!!!! Maybe I'm just getting a bit OCD... I've even tried a bunch of cleaner apps but to no avail. Damn apps not cleaning up after themselves...

If you know a script called "superwipe"recommended for flashing new CustomRoms, flash this script in clockworkmod recovery menu by choosing instal zip from SD CARD,and the internal memory will be completely vanished, while the EXTERNALSDCARD stays Untouched.
if i helped you feel free to press thanks!!

Use Megawipe script from the General Section..search it there..put it on your extsdcard and flash via CWM..all you data will be wiped just the extsdcard will be left..
Well chainfire's 5.5.0.4 CWM recovery "1.5" loads from my external sd card instead so assuming I have my ROM files on there, I should be able to use that script without bricking my phone! Wish me luck! Lol. Thanks for the help.

[Q] "No external storage available" after flashed epinter's CM10

New to XDA. Tried searching the forums if similar issue has been asked before but seems that none is quite similar to my situation.
Mine Atrix was HK 2.3.4 stock rom. I unlocked bootloader, rooted and flashed epinter's CM10. The custom rom works well so far.
But the major problem is that whenever I use apps that require external storage, such as Photo Gallery and Play Music,
or try to save/restore backup of apps in the sd card, these apps pop up a message "no external storage available" and force close.
I tried to flash back to the 2.3.4 stock rom and the sd card works fine with my phone.
Then I once again flashed CM10, the above problem occurs one again.
With CM10, when I connect the phone with my computer through USB cable, I can only access to the sd card but not the internal storage.
I installed ASTRO and I can explore the files on sd card (/storage/sdcard1), but since I can't access to internal storage on computer,
I have no idea which directory I should look for in ASTRO as the internal storage.
When it was 2.3.4 stock rom, the above problems never happened. Could anyone advise me the solution?
/storage/sdcard0 ->Internal
/storage/sdcard1 -> External
Did you do a clean install (full-wipe)? Check on CM10 Settings -> Storage [Use external storage]

Yes I did 3-wipe before and after flashing rom. And the Settings -> Storage [Use external storage] didn't help.
Hi
As far as I know, you must enter in advanced option and here activate the external SD card.

This has already been done before.
[Update]After a reboot, the phone finally can detect the sd card, but the internal storage is still absent from the file explorer (ASTRO) or the computer through USB. So weird?
I recently flashed this rom and I am having the same problems except my external micro SD card works, could anyone help?
You're not alone I'm having he same problem with external sdcard. Maybe there's no solution for now
re partitioning

hello guys hope this can help
I flashed cm10 epinter for atrix olympus hk version. I had the same problem of disappearing internal storage, even in recovery the emmc cannot mount. After digging for weeks i finally found this that saved me. Basically it is just deleting the old partition , remake it and then format. Instruction is simple just a few lines. Just need to be careful.
Now both internal and external storage are OK and both show in usb mode connecting to computer. Hope it works for you and not too late.

[Q] APP 2 SD/CWM Recovery access to Mounted Flash Drive??? HOW??

Hello there. Have a quick question...
I would like to free up some space by moving rarely used apps to an externaly mounted sd card/stick.
i am running CM 10 nightlies (never more than 3 days behind newest) with pershoots last kernel 11/19/2012.
i am using the STICK MOUNT app to mount my stick/sd card.
Mount works fine and sd card/stick is always where expected.....root/usbdrive....peripherals work fine...mouse, keyboard etc....
i am using the app 2 sd pro app, and also checked in the app settings menu for a "move to SD Card/External Storage" option but i have not noticed before that that option is not there (never thought of or noticed it before as i did not have external storage set up until now =)
ALSO i need to access the external media in clockwork recovery touch to flash from it. how can i do this... it does not give me a backup to external or any way to choose zip from externalsd card.....
any ideas? thanks guys!!!
EDIT**** i just flashed the recovery pershoot has with his new JB rom. 6.3.0.2 or something close to that...dont remember exactly. i thought it might have an updated option to install from external SD card.... but alas it does not.....still same problem =(

[Q] I formatted my sdcard-HELP

I was was running JellyBam and had it all tricked out but the email was acting wanky and the battery insisted it was always being charged. Neither of these were issues when it was a fresh install. I did a backup to my external sdcard and proceeded to format the sdcard since I had two ROMs installed on it and JellyBam doesn't seem to play nice with Siyah.
Much to my surprise it formatted both sdcards. I have been able to install a copy of Siyah kernel onto the internal sdcard. But all of the zip files I was counting on using are gone. How can I get a ROM installed so I can begin recovery? Thanks

Just put the SD card in your computer and copy over that way, then boot into recovery and install like normal. Should have no problems.

ALWAYS a good idea to physically remove your external SD card and then format your internal SD card. Then turn off and put the external card back in.
In this case if you absolutely had vital data on your external card and haven't copied or reformatted it since the mess happened, I suggest removing the external sd, put it in an SD adaptor in your computer and download a data recovery program. It will scan it although your computer might say it is raw/do you wanna format or something like that, and find shreds of files left on it.
Good luck
