Im not sure why this hasn't been asked before. So ill throw it out there.
How can we port the roms of the international version to our phones? Every day before release I would read a post from someone stating that the roms will be easy to port ext ext all we would have to do is change over the radio and what not. Its been a few days and I cant seem to find any information on how to do this, or anyone talking about it.
Can this be done?

I've been looking through the posts and some are sort of old. So i'm posting this just to make sure I have all the current and correct information.
I'm coming over from a T-Mobile HTC Dream that I flashed to Cyanogen.
I want to flash my Sprint Hero to the Modaco Custom ROM primarily so I can wifi tether but also because I suspect that the Modaco ROM probably performs better.
anyway here are my questions:
Can I use Cyanogen's 1.4 Recovery Image to gain root access? If not, which should I use?
What version of the ModaCo ROM do I want to use? Is the most recent also the most stable?
Do I need to flash on a new Radio? If so, which one?
That's it. Like I said I did read through a bunch of posts first but since most of the ones I found with good information were from 6 months ago, I just wanted to make sure I had all the current information before going forward.

You may want to mention that it's a Sprint Hero in the title of your post. I was hoping to help you out, but like the majority of people here, I have the Telus/European model, so I don't think I'm qualified to answer your questions.

Instead of the Cyanogen Recovery image, use this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581521
We don't have a new kernel so MoDaCo's ROM is just some tweaks to the stock OS until a working kernel is built and optimized. (Also wifitethering is working on the stock ROM for me, just gotta use the pre-release version since they only recently figured out what was blocking it).
You can find the CDMA MoDaCo here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581846
There's no new radio firmware so you shouldn't need to flash the radio.
It can be tough sorting between GSM and CDMA information but hopefully this will start you in the right direction.
Thanks thecodemonk, that information helps alot. So based on your information it probably doesn't make any sense for me to flash to Modaco right now. How do I get my hands on the pre-release version so that I can tether?
Thanks

Sure thing DaveKid.
I'm running stock myself but it's really more of a preference thing. If you like MoDaCo's stuff, I am sure he will continue to improve it (once he gets back from his trip). I'm more waiting it out and I like tweaking things myself so I'm implementing some things he's done and doing other things differently. If you like MoDaCo, go for it!
Here's the link to the issue thread where I got the pre-release issue (as well as pros/cons of using it from other people...it's worth a read!)
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=188
Direct link to the apk file: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_1_61-pre1_htc.apk
It's working well for me but some others are reporting an issue with wireless from it. I'm sure in time, they will have a more elegant official release for us.
one more quick question....
do I still want to format my MicroSD card into 3 partitions: fat32, Ext3, Linux-Swap?

The point of partitioning is to use Apps2SD (Ext2/3/4 partition) and to use your sdcard as a swap drive (Linux-Swap).
The point of Apps2SD is to store all your apps on your SDCard (surprise!)...usually because you have *that* many apps that it doesn't fit on the internal storage area. The other reason people do this is because they want an easier way to backup what apps they have installed.
As for the swap issue, there are a couple camps in this arena...
Some believe that Android should be left to manage it's memory as it was designed to do and that putting in a swap partition messes with that (since SDCards are slower than internal memory). I fall into this camp.
Other's believe that it gives them more flexability and overcomes some of the limits...they like having more things in "running state".
Hopefully that will educate you to make your choices the way you want your device to be.
Hey guys, so I just ordered an Eris which I intend to use on MetroPCS.
I just want to make sure that I'm doing all this in the correct order..
So, fist thing is that I need to make sure that the phone has 2.1 on it in order to use the 1 click root solution(love )
-Though if my phone isn't 2.1..how do I upgrade without rooting so that I can root?
Next, I need to choose a rom to use. I found the read first sticky listing all the most current roms and radios and other info on how to actually install them.
-Though, since the thread is closed are they really all the latest?
Lastly, I need to Flash (not sure if that is actually the correct terminology) the phone's settings over to Metro using the file found here.
I think that's the basic direction that I need to take. Please let me know if I'm missing anything.
I am in the dark about a couple things, though I'm not sure I need to understand them.
I know the kernel is a central part of the OS, but doesn't it come with the rom you choose? Why would you need to flash the Kernel, is it just to update your rom without actually changing your rom?
Also, what's with recovery images and what's an RUU?
Finally, how do I pick a rom that's right for me!? There seem to be so many and I'm not sure which are the most recent/functional/fast..
Anyway, you guys are awesome for all you do and I hope that this thread can be useful to someone besides just me.
Thanks again!!

Probably once you get the phone it will already have the 2.1 official OS or you can update it through the Settings and have it check for updates. I would suggest that you try xtrSense. I have no clue on the Metro settings though but I would imagine once you get a good ROM flashed that all you have to do is to just install the settings.
Thanks, yeah..I think that link that I posted takes care of the metro settings..at least it says it does.
I didn't think I would be able to do an over the air update because I was assuming that it was DL'd from a verizon server. Does the update to 2.1 come from a typical internet source that can be accessed from any network?
Hi i got a question i was looking under the wrong s2 section for a while like the 1900 etc. is it possible for us to flash these roms to our att sg2 ur will it brick the device? the only reason i ask is because we have like maybe two different roms for our phone and that sucks.
just really want to know so good roms to flash and if we can flash maybe like tmobiles roms or anybodys
thanks for your time
beware
only flash roms created for your phone. jmho.
No, you can't directly flash I9100 ROMs.
Eventually a proper porting methodology will probably be determined, but most people have been too busy with initial bringup efforts.
As an example, look at Perception - that's an I9100 port. It IS very easy to port I9100 ROMs for an experienced ROM dev, however, there isn't an "automated" porting method like Hellraiser on the Infuse yet. It just isn't a priority right now.
Well, I've read a post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408312) because I'm interested to know if there's a possible way to cook ICS rom for my SGS Wifi 5.0 (a.k.a. Galaxy Player 5.0). I realized that nobody cares about this device, so I'm going farther to learn how I can do it myself... I started thinking that SGS Wifi 5.0 it's similar to Galaxy S in hardware (and there's some ICS roms for SGS), and also these two doesn't have ICS official support... WOW! yes, they're similar so I'm starting my adventure asking you if it's possible to get ICS (theoretically) in "every" device? (obviously, not every because of the hardware).
EDIT: I'm new at the forum, so if there's something wrong with the post, let me know
Forgive my noobness. but seems im having trouble finding a central location to locate roms.
i have already rooted my evo 3d. however it was some time ago and does not allow for updates. I'v gotten my data in order and would like to flash with a new rom to get all the updates and new os version that iv been missing out on. to my recollection i can DL the rom to my card, then boot to load that rom, but i was hoping someone can point me in the direction on the forum where i can start looking at new roms. and maybe even a rom that will allow me to update if its possible. thinking of going without sense.
thanks for the advice.
All the roms are in the Development sub-forum.
