Which Galaxy S3 to get? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I currently have the International version of galaxy s2 i9100.
I want to upgrade to s3, but would like to know which one to get as there are many versions?
Like Samsung galaxy s2 international version have lots of support, which s3 has more support?
Which s3 gets good battery, quad core or dual core?
Thanks

tbh both versions are really close..the only difference i feel is the us version having lte that is the game changer for many. as for development i would stick with the international version if you like flashing roms often

Ok, which one has better battery?

It's supposed to be the us version because of the proc but since lte is a battery sucker I don't know, anyway the int version have a really good battery life.
Sent from my beautiful GS3 int unlocked, rooted and beloved.

The US version will have the same amount of support as the international version.

Looking at the skyrocket compared to the I9100, the support is much better on the I9100.
If you flash a lot of roms I would stick with international.

I have the same question. I want a S3 phone to use here in Brazil, so I would have to get either the AT&T or International version. I wonder if the additional RAM makes the US version a better option than the International. BTW here in Brazil we still don't have 4G, so LTE isn't important.
Regards

Go with SIII International edition if it's available in your country --only if you play games, videos etc.., quad is better.
If you want to use it for mainly calls, browsing and messaging dual core is more than enough IMO

Tests have confirmed both models will work the same for normal user use.
The international model does have a better graphics chip, and may be better in the long run for gaming, but the NA version has 2 GB of RAM which might mean it will be better for newer ROMs. I'm not a big cell phone gamer so the graphic chip means almost nothing to me. As a Verizon customer all I want is speed and coverage in an awesome phone, and that's what I'm getting. Besides I have a Asus TF201 with Nvidia tegra 3 if I want to game.
The quad core vs dual core has already been brought up many times, the dual core is as good in most normal circumstances. Think of it this way: My 6-core AMD processor is just as good as a 4 core Intel processor.

Forget the battery life OP. If you get an international GS3, you won't have LTE period! I guess you'd have good battery life that way actually... hmmmm.

LTE only matters if it matters to you.
Meh. LTE is only a big deal if a) you've got the coverage, and b) you've got the money. IMHO, why pay more money to burn through a lower cap faster? I've got the grandfathered unlimited data plan, and HSPA+ is more than enough for me. To each his own.

I agree. I have AT&T and am using the HSPA+ and it's more than enough for me (not to mention cheaper). I'm either at work where I won't usually use my phone or I'm somewhere with WiFi and don't really need to worry about LTE. From everything I've heard LTE is, generally speaking, more of a battery hog. I'd stick with the International version unless you really need LTE.

The ATT version of the GS2 (not Skyrocket) has really good dev support. The fact that it was so close to the international version meant pretty much any rom that came out for the 9100 we could port it to the I777 pretty damn easily.

The thing is for me 3g isn't enough. It too slow, and sucks for tethering. 3-5 mb/s stinks, and the ping rates are even worse. I tried my buddies Galaxy Nexus and across the board it's betting in terms of speed. I can't wait for my S3

The International version just won't cut it for you then. If you depend on those LTE speeds then get the US version.

Should have multiquoted with above but look at the Galaxy Nexus. The Verizon and Sprint versions have as much development as the international one. And like I said above there are FOUR US S3s that can use roms interchangeably if the required radio files are changed. Just like on the Galaxy nexus.

It's probable that the international version will have the most support due to the fact that it's the most widely used. The US versions will still have support, just not to the extent that the international version does. *Probably.*

How do you think the Samsung Charge will stack up to the competition? Not that exciting next to other Verizon upcoming LTE enabled devices? Or better than the rest?
Its a galaxy s with a better screen. It has the same internals. The thunderbolt has a better processor and a decent screen. The bionic is going to be a dual core monster and the sgs2 will be out later with the best of all worlds. The charge is a last generation smart phone with a new screen. I wouldnt put my money on it winning any contests.

Well there is a screen shot somewhere showing SGS2 coming to VZW but thats not a lot to go on. Still, I can't imagine they would ignore the VZW market. Likely they will just be months behind, the way the fascinate was to the captivate

This generation is different, though. Verizon, and only Verizon, is pursuing LTE for its next-gen data -- since EVDO sucks and is deeply limited. And since Voice over LTE (VoLTE, which is why I guess all the Verizon 4G phones have the lightning motif) doesn't exist yet and you need 1x and 3G data for full coverage anyway, this means that Verizon models will need two separate radios instead of just being able to swap the GSM chip for the CDMA chip. LTE is even bulkier than WiMax, because it requires a SIM card and MIMO as well.
So while AT&T and T-Mo (if the latter continues to exist) will get something basically equivalent to the SGS2, Verizon and Sprint will end up with a bigger form factor -- like the Epic or Charge. And we'll have to wait a while this time too.
AT&T is going to HSPA+ short term for "4G" and LTE is their long term plan, so they'll need the same LTE radio as VZW phones when they decide to start up their LTE network and phones/devices.
I'm waiting.
If I go 4G, I want more than just 4G. I want dual core, good battery, front camera, better screen, hdmi out, etc.
Since LTE is so new, I may wait a year anyways. I may pick up the Sony Xperia Play so I can have the latest Android with all the above except 4G while adding real game controls.

Luckily I know that if it's not exactly as I want it to be, I'll now have another 30 days to go back and get my beloved GSII.

Just a heads up to everyone. AT&T Direct Corp stores will have the Skyrocket on sale for $149.99 starting Sunday. This price is good only at their stores, dealers will be the standard $249.99 pricing on a 2yr contract. Verified by 3 sources (2 prev managers I worked with) and 1 random local store.

Agreed. They used the verbiage, 'initial launch window' which leads me to believe they're doing this to lure people directly into their stores initially. Not sure how long but it definitely won't be the permanent price. If I can get any more solid info or source material, I'll update - but no promises.

That's my issues with it.
1. I just got the sga2 and the size of it is perfect. When I hold it in my right hand I can very easily swipe down the notifications or if I am typing with it is my ritgh hand and using my thumb I can do it easily and fairly accurately. With a bigger screen I don't know it will fit as nicely, in fact I am pretty sure it wont. I have the bionic and it drives me crazy because it so big and the thunderbolt is the same way.
2. Rom development learning curve. When the lye came out for Verizon there was a tremendous amount of issues ans bugs with data switching from 4g to 3g and half the time you were left without any data. It will not be as easy for the devs to make Roms or even port them because for some it will be a new concept. Right now we have a few great roms to choose from. When the sga2 is out it will be a while until there is a any Roms. If anything I will wait until the last couple of days of my return period which is about 22 days from now, to see the progress of development, before I think of switching. Like I said the screen size is an issue for me. If it doesn't fit as nice as this phone then I definitely wont switch.
3. Battery life- even though the skyrkt has a bigger battery the battery life will be significantly less than what we got. All lte devices have shirty battery life, bionic, thunderbolt etc. I know this because I own them and as you can see which phone I favor because I am writing this post frlm it. The sga2 is by far the best phone out there, tried them all. Any deviation from this phone could possibly make it no longer "the perfect phone". I have not tried the phone yet so at this point I am just assuming, or speculating.

Comparing Verizon's LTE phones to att lte phones is that both are different in terms the phones. To my understanding that Verizon's phones has 2 radios one for their cdma aka 3G network and the other for lte where Att will only have one except their lte is going to be more then likely a different band but since lte is gsm, should not need another radio. So trying to compare verizon's lte to 3g switch off is not going to be the same as att lte which from what I have been reading about will be running on 700 and 1700 mhz bands which is probably why att will not have as many problems as verizon since att currently uses for their Hspa *3G* and Hspa+ *4G as marketed* runs off 850 and 1900 mhz bands, so building an lte radio to run quad band should not be an issue and then running a quad band for 2G should not be an issue in the same radio where Verizon's 3G network as they call it is cdma and their lte network should be running off of 700 mhz and 1700 mhz as well as falls back to cdma. The issue I can see happening with att is the 3G/4G/LTE back to Edge aka 2G will cause dropped calls and slow data or no data, like it does from hspa/hspa+ back to Edge. My sgs2 has been proven otherwise but it still can happen because the handoff is not perfect.
I am not sure if battery life is going to take a serious hit as I do not have lte in my area at the moment with att but what would have been nice to test the skyrocket compared to the og sgs2 if both were running the same cpu, that would be the true test. A good test would be the T-mobile sgs2 versus the skyrocket, that would be a way to see if the battery life takes a hit since both phones are similar in specs.

Just got the Skyrocket.. questions?

Just picked up my Skyrocket about an hour ago. LTE here so far seems pretty sweet. Getting around 15-20mbps download AND upload with 3 bars.
Any questions? I'll probably be making a video comparison between the International GS2 and the Skyrocket soon.

How is the text sharpness on the Skyrocket, and can you control it with one hand?
hows battery life? Does the phone switch from 3G to LTE like the GS2 switches from UMTS to HSPA when data is needed to save battery life?

But to answer your question, it stays on LTE data.. unless there's no signal. No switching between UMTS and HSPA
i got my sky rocket at 12 it is now 7pm and i still have 80% left and i have been running test and downloading and using netflix i dont see this phone as a battery hog AT ALL.
i have not seen it switch out of 4glte at all so far.
even when i have one bar, i get 9mbps when i have 3 plus bars its easily gets 20 plus mbps. and i have seen it hit 44 mbps maybe a fluke who knows though.
this thing flips through the web and runs streaming movies with ease.....sometimes i dont even see the loading bar.
im sorry, so its been confirmed that the skyrocket is snapdragon processor? Also how noticable is the display/pixels compared to the i777?

Exactly like the T-Mobile SGS2. The Skyrocket's the same phone with an LTE radio vs. DC HSPA. If you read their forum, the UI isn't as fluid and neither is the browser. There's also some issues with the display because it's the same DPI as the OSGS2 stretched over a larger screen. It also benchmarks lower than Exynos. I'm sure all the happy new Skyrocket owners will disagree. Check out the TSGS2 forum, they've had the phone longer and aren't blinded by love. The online reviews of the TSGS2 frequently compare it to the ISGS2 so you may want to check a few of those out also as they've noted the performance difference.

I wont disagree but I will say I couldn't care less if it doesn't bench as high. This device is well beyond anything else I've used and still exceeds 90% of what's out there imo. I'm fine with that and I love the larger size.
I've yet to see any lag or sluggish-ness in any app so it all appears equal to me.

No - Same processor and a lot of hardware is the same, but the radios are completely different (WiMAX + CDMA instead of GSM/UMTS).
It has less development than the I777 due to reduced commonality with the I9100, and for a long time had all sorts of radio stability issues.

Although the Skyrocket shares the Galaxy SII model name, it is a completely different phone from the SGH-i777 SGSII.
I went with that model first, but lost signal completely within 1-2 hours. I had to fight sprint for my credit deposit. I'm content with the att version now. I wish I had bought the international one, but I'm upgrading to the next big world phone when it's still new. hopefully I can get at least 300 for this then.
Plus the 4.5 models pales in comparison with our screens. I saw a Epic 4G Touch yesterday at Best Buy and the screen colors looked horrible compared to mine. It had the contrast of a crappy HTC phone, I was baffled

Yup - the loss of signal is what I meant by radio stability issues.

No - Same processor and a lot of hardware is the same, but the radios are completely different (WiMAX + CDMA instead of GSM/UMTS).
It has less development than the I777 due to reduced commonality with the I9100, and for a long time had all sorts of radio stability issues.

Plus the E4GT fourms are a nightmare.. there is so much drama over there and so much fighting back and fourth. Coming to the AT&T side was like a fresh breath of air

Simultaneous 3g voice and data

Does the phone support voice and data simultaneously over 3g? I have not found a good answer on Google, Verizon said yes and fact is I can't do it in a 3g area.

Nope... doesn't have the svdo chip like the s3

Bummer and thanks, I became used to that function of the thunderbolt. Going to be hard to go back.

Well crap, that sucks. I was hoping to move from my AT&T iPhone to the GNII. But I use and need voice and data at the same time. What other Verizon phones can do this other than the S3?

HTC Thunderbolt, HTC Rezound, Samsung S3
As long as you are in a LTE area it will do voice and data at the same time.

Yes, I was on LTE, called my voicemail, and was able to browse the internet. It won't work if you're on 3g though.

Whew. Relief. I am in LTE areas almost all of the time, and if not then Wifi.

Yeah, as has been mentioned a few times, the Note 2 can't do SVDO (simultaneous voice and data over 3G). Special hardware is required in order for this to work, and the Note 2 doesn't have it (so there's no chance of it ever being able to do it).
And just to add some tangible proof, here are the FCC documents for the Verizon Note 2. If you look at the RF Exposure Info 1 document, on page 5 (section 1.5), you'll find the Simultaneous Transmission Capabilities. SVDO is not listed. Then, if you look at Table 1-2 on the next page (which lists all of the possible simultaneous transmission capabilities), you'll see that at no point is voice and 3G capable simultaneously. For every combination of the two, it says "Not Supported by HW." Then at the bottom, it specifically states:
CDMA and EVDO share the same antenna path and cannot transmit simultaneously. (Non-SVDO)

So, no SVDO for the Note 2, and it will never be able to do it. It can definitely do simultaneous voice and data while connected to LTE though (the data connection runs through LTE, the voice connection through CDMA).
Wow, the first thing that I've heard about the Note 2 that sucks. Wtf, why would it not be, when the S3 is? Why would this later-released, more expensive, "higher" tech phone miss this? Strange....

It all comes down to the hardware used.
The Galaxy S3 released on all carriers in the U.S. has the Snapdragon S4 processor. That processor has all of the cellular radios integrated into it, including support for SVDO.
The Note 2 does not have the same processor. It has a Samsung Exynos processor. This processor does not have integrated radios. The separate radios that Samsung chose to include do not have SVDO support.
SVDO isn't something that Verizon or Sprint advertise because they can't guarantee that it will consistently work. Because of that, it's a feature that most users won't even really know is or isn't there (and because CDMA users are used to not being able to do simultaneous voice and data over 3G). So, manufacturers don't have to go out of their way to include it. If the radios used support it already (like the Snapdragon S4 in the Galaxy S3), then we get an added bonus.

That is really sad news. I spend so much time driving between work sites and on the phone i was really enjoying the fact that i would still recieve emails while on conference calls on my S3, damn. I really wanted the note 2, what a waste, so we have multi window, the ultimate in android multitasking but we lost what i consider to be a basic multitasking feature. I wish these manufacturers would spend a few more months to get these important features on high end phones, i bet this processor appears in less than three months in a phone with voice/data over CDMA.

The Qualcomm Gobi MDM9615 radio in LTE variants of GNII support SVDO. This is the same basic radio that's in the Snapdragon S4 Pro, except it's not integrated into the SoC. However, the GNII differs from the GSIII North American version in that's it's fundamentally the same as the International version except with differently tuned antennas for different regions and carriers. The Exynos processor has no effect on the lack of SVDO, instead it's the numbers of antennas and which signal paths transmit on the antennas. In this regard the GNII and iPhone 5 (which also uses the MDM9615) are similar in that their antenna designs prevent SVDO even though the radio does support it.
As far as Verizon is concerned, they are planning to have their entire 3G network footprint overlaid with LTE by mid-2013. So for us Verizon GNII owners, it literally doesn't matter that our phones don't support SVDO. In roughly 6 months, the entire country will have LTE, and the GNII supports SVLTE just fine. Now those Sprint GNII owners, point and laugh.

Thanks for the clarification. Either way, the major point I was trying to get at still holds true - all of the hardware that's necessary for SVDO isn't present in the Note 2.
I finally found an app that let me goto cdma/evdo only and waited till the 3G icon showed up then made a call and while in call tried to go online but got an error saying no data connection. When I ended the call I checked the internet again and had no problem. I know it's already been said in this post that it doesn't work but I wanted to do an actual test just to make sure. So there you have it.
It seems to be an intermittent problem with me. I tried it out by ringing my voicemail and the data symbol remained got to listen to my voice mails and go to a website at the same time and I am on a 3g network
