Hi,
all the photos and videos i take in portrait orientation are showing fine on the S3, but are tilted on my laptop regardless which program i use.
Thats annoying, my previous iphone and One X didn´t do that?
What can i do?
thx, nearly
Am I the only one?

I just found out, that the photos do alright if you use the normal 8mp setting. I had mine set to 16:9 and then rotation doesn't work on the PC.
For video, it just doesn't work. I just wonder what that greed out flipped-setting is supposed for.?

I also have this problem, I'm pretty sure we all do.
Btw, in my case photos taken with 8MP portrait were also rotated on the PC. Pictures can be easily rotated back on windows, so it's not an issue. Videos are the real problem.
The reason, as far as I know, is poor handling of Samsung with portrait videos/pictures. Apparently, the S3 adds a metadata header of 90 degrees rotation, instead of really rotating the picture/video. Most video players on PC aren't aware of this header, hence the video is shown rotated.
I don't think Samsung will fix this, so there are two ways to workaround it:
1. Shoot video in landscape mode
2. Use an application to rotate the Video, then send it.
Is it gone with the recent Ota?

Pictures or videos I take are not automatically rotated. If I attempt to share something on twitter taken in portrait it is always 90 degrees to the left. Videos are the same way when viewed on the computer. I'm running froyo and thought this functionality existed in eclair? Does anyone have a fix or does this bother anyone else?
In you're notification drop down bar, the toggle is there for auto rotation

Pictures and video when viewed on the phone are always in the correct orientation. It's only when I try and share pictures and video that the orientation is wrong.
Pictures and video are never in the correct orientation when trying to share them. Whether it is via twitter or MMS, they are always rotated incorrectly. Videos which are taken in portrait and imported to the computer are always played back titled in landscape unless I rotate and re-encode, them which is a giant pain in the ass and leads me to believe the phone isnt correctly saving the rotational EXIF data. My iphone 3g did this stuff automatically, it should be a basic feature.
So for example: I take a picture of a car then I press the picture icon in the lower right corner of the camera app, then the gallery app will show the car I've just taken up side down, or rotated clock-wise. What I have to do then is to rotate it left then right (or the other way) to get the picture in the correct orientation.
Has anyone had the same problem as I do? This and the homescreen keeps rebooting (due to lack of memory?) have been quite bugging me since I got the phone.
I'll be glad to hear if someone found a fix for these problems.
Try calibrating the gyro
Settings > Display > Gyroscope calibration
Do you think it could be the reason. Cause everything works fine for me, like video player, camera app, browsers...
Hmm, are you sure the camera was orientated correctly when you were taking the picture then? Because I remember this happening a few times on my old phone e.g. Phone orientated landscape when recording, then I record in portrait (yes I know this is a crime against society), then when you play it back it plays portrait in landscape mode and vice versa.

I'm having the same problem. Have you solved it?
I think the problem is that the S3 is using the value "rotation" in the exif, and the gallery act like this.
I tried to use the PC to donwload the photos and then I rotated it, and the problem was solved (The exif had changed too, because at the begining the size was wrong and had the "rotate value" to 90 and now i doesn't)
Thne problem is that the i9000 I think uses a diferent way of rename this exif option
It could be easier for samsung to change the resolution using the giroscopes values, and evaluate what is the with or what is the high
Hi,
i have a different rotation issue.
If i take pictures or videos in portrait format, the gallery on the phone will display everything correct, but every player in windows 7 doesn´t.
Why´s that?
thx, nearly
I have the same problem too
I think the problem is the way that the S3 makes the photos. It writes in the exif the size as if it where in horizontal way and writes 90 degrees as a coment. Maybe it is not a standard option, and maybe it the Galaxy S1 writes a more standarised coment (But now the S3 do not understand because the are using a diferent one)
So is there a fix for this?

I just had the same thing happened to my s3,what i did was:
Turned off the phone
take the card out
backup the pictures to computer
add more pictures to backup folder in computer i got from different card (pictures taken with the same phone)
Add the new pictures to the 1st card
Now gallery shows pictures with wrong orientation, old ones and newly taken
I used a mac, there was an attempt made by iPhoto app to scan once the card is mounted but I don't think it modified anything
One thing i haven't looked into is if there's hidden indexing file being created in the card that throws off gallery.
If you have the fix please share.
Hello everybody
I found exposure slider in camera setting has no effect on viewfinder and also on resulted media . Weather was still camera or video.
Any one confirm this or else?

I have the exact same problem, from both front and back cameras. Same in third party camera apps, exposure controls simply do not function as expected, no change at all. HDR picture mode seems to work fine though.
Not a serious enough problem for me to RMA, but it is a small dent in the glory of the S3 for sure..

I also had this issue and was deeply disappointed, because my optimus 2x made much better shots in low light because of the exposure compensation.
I found the solution today: I used the hidden camera menu *#34971539# and discovered that my camera was ZDFE02 and the phone firmware was ZDFE03. If your phone to cam button is greyed out, do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32721917
After copying the file to internal SD, restart, then update and restart. You get new cam firmware and now the exposure works.
hi all,
is there a way to tweak the camera setting so that if i record videos vertically, it'll still capture what it would if you were to hold the phone horizontally? or an app which can enable that??
i'm asking because it's quite annoying when i record a video holding the phone vertically, i have to use a program to rotate the video to watch it upright on my computer...also makes the video weird once i rotate it because the video is now long and skinny instead of wide screen.
i know some of you may say i can just simply hold the phone horizontally...the thing is sometimes i forget and also i find it more comfortable holding the phone vertically.
or is this a physical limitation of the camera lens??
any help would be much appreciated.
If you wanted widescreen in vertical you would need to crop. The sensor is a rectangle, so its not so much the limitation of the lens as its if the sensor. With cropping you lose a lot of detail and resolution. So even if you found an app like that, it would still have to crop.

i seee..so it's a restriction with the hardware.
thank you for the info! appreciate it.
sucks because sometimes when i go to concerts, holding the phone vertically will allow me to record over the person in front of me if they're taller.

Hello guys!
The topic is still actual. The camera sensor is big enough these days to record full HD landscape video while a phone is holding vertically. So, does anyone know a camera app which can do it?
Thanks a lot!
if the sensor is square, its just retarded software that wont simply rotate the image. the only reason this is not the default is greedy shareholders. a rectangular sensor is cheaper than a square one and they dont care about user experience
Hi there,
I wanted to start a discussion about stuff that we like/dislike about this phone, but not the obvious stuff - rather things that are not much talked about. When I read about this phone, most popular topics are about fingerprint sensor, screen resolution, 50x zoom, night mode...
So first, things I don't like:
1. Aspect ratio issues:
- No 16:9 photos aspect ratio.
- Screen 19.5:9 aspect ratio can cause issues in games/applications that only support 16:9 aspect ratio. It's not a huge issue, because most apps support wide screen. It's also the same for other wide screen phones.
- Screen mirroring to TV - because of 19.5:9 aspect ratio, there are black bars on top and bottom, so when you are viewing 4:3 photos on 16:9 TV, the photo is very small and shown only in the center of TV with black bars around it. I don't know how other wide screen phones work, but I guess the same way.
2. Camera:
- There is no way to force the camera app to use the optical 5x zoom in photo mode/videos when the light is low. For me it was a huge issue when I was recording a concert and the camera was jumping constantly between 5x optical and digital zooms. Digital had more view on scene where the light was good, so it jumped to optical lens, optical view is out of sync so bigger part of view was on the dark crowd and it jumped back to optical again. There was no way to record it with zoom.
- How different lenses view is synced - widescreen and normal 1x are in sync when changing between them, you get basically the picture in the same position, but 5x optical and normal are just so much out of sync, that it is very very visible how it switches when you go from 4.9x to 5x. Not a huge issue, but it could be better.
- There is no level indicator in other modes than pro.
3. Speaker:
- The quality is OK at most, when compared to Samsung for example (Samsung S10 has amazing speakers), but it's a phone after all, so I don't expect much anyway.
Now things I like:
1. Huawei Share. My god, this thing is amazing. You can just connect your PC to your phone with WiFi and browse files normally as if it was connected with a usb cable! That is truly amazing. I didn't have it in Xiaomi, newest Samsung phones also don't have it. Why nobody talks about this amazing feature?
2. Camera app:
- Amazing zoom possibilities, 5x zoom which I'm using constantly during my trips and I don't know how people can say they don't use it much. There is something called perspective and this photo shows what I'm talking about. You can get especially amazing pictures when you have mountains in the background. So much discussed 50x zoom is not really usable, but 20x still has amazing quality.
- All different modes, especially the light painting/silky water is nice. Also the pro mode with so many different settings and 30 seconds shutter time. There are much more modes and possibilities than most youtube reviewers show us. They usually just show night mode, 5x zoom, 50x zoom and that's it. Like that's just 10% of options in that app! When you really start knowing the app, it is just much better than Samsung or Xiaomi camera apps. You can shoot much better pictures when you know what you are doing.
3. EMUI:
- I really like this system, the icons, design, features, it's really nice. I don't know how anyone can 'hate' this system? I came to EMUI from Xiaomi and Samsung phones and for me it's just better.
Huawei P30 Pro is my first Huawei phone and I must say I'm really impressed by the price/quality ratio. What are your thoughts?
Point 2: tray to rec videos with opencam or edgecam. You can choose 1x camera and zoom in or you can choose 5x camera. No changes between they.

this to me is a huge issue...as i was trying to photo one of our dogs in evening time and it would only zoom via digital.....every now and then it would flicker to ultra clear optical but not for long enough to get a shot.
no workaround at all for it ?...i see no mention of it in google searches.
i can imagine being in the same situation as you recording a gig and that would be troublesome.

Open Camera allows you to cycle through the lenses.
ID 0 is normal mode with multi-lenses
ID 1 is front camera
ID 2 is main lens
ID 3 is wide angle lens
ID 4 is zoom

You just tap the icon to switch to the selfie camera and when you tap it again it takes you to the next lens. I discovered it by accident

Yes, for photo it works, but then you get no AI... Also normal photo AI handles the 5x zoom when light is low better than pro, I guess it takes digital zoom which is bright and merges it with optical which is dark
As for the video, I tried the open camera, but from what I can see, it only allows to switch between normal 1x and 5x zoom, but when you zoom to 5x it works the same as huawei built in cam app... So it switches to digital and back to optical all the time.
Edgecam also allows you to use all the lenses

With edgecam or opencam you can choose the lense.
If you choose 1x lense an make zoom is only digital zoom.
For 5x optical zoom you must change to 5x lense.

Mine stays on optical all the time in video.
Yes pictures are generally better with AI but OC enables you to stay with optical even when light is low.
Issue :ghost notifications.
By ghost notifications i mean there is a sound and vibration but nothing else. Now I am pretty used to them, but from day one and after a couple of updates, they are still present. I have disable notifications from almost all apps except messaging ones, but ghost notifications keep going! Even during night with flight mode on. ?

Maybe I'm missing something as I am very new to this phone. I have set my phone to lock after 2 minutes but whenever it locks, it makes a click type sound which I find very distracting. I wish I could turn that off.

Actually you can turn it off.
Go to Settings ---> Sounds (or Tones) then pick the last entry and deactivate Lockscreen sound.
I don't know how it looks in english, as my native language is German
