I am coming from the HTC Evo OG and the HTC Evo LTE and was a flashaholic on the OG Evo and was wondering if the flashing of roms for the S3 is the same or is it a little different? I am a newbie to Samsung so please dont flame me for asking.
Flashing roms through custom recovery is pretty much the same across all devices.
Rooting methods are different though.
what's different is that rooting can trip a internal counter, and modify the About Phone/Status page to note very obviously that the you have Modified the phone (look at the bottom of that page if you haven't rooted it says Normal, and Modified if you have. I understand that this is going to be corrected (worked around) but it hasn't as of yet.

Nope, my phone says modified.
The CWM root via ODIN doesn't have anything to do with the Triangle Away. I don't feel like the first ATT user to use the Un-root file, though the instructions imply that it should work.

There's a clean re-root that won't trip the flags?? Where? The stuff is changing here so fast, and the integration of the 3 forums is confusing at the moment.

Sorry, I have the international version I forgot which Q/A I was in haha. I am pretty sure I read there was a way for our phones to be unrooted then rerooted to remove the *modified* message but I'm not positive it would be similar for the S4 variant.

Haven't found this. Is rooting this device reversible in such a way as ATT cannot tell you ever rooted it and warranty/insurance would cover it if something comes up with the phone?
Rooting is reversible. You can use Odin and return the phone back to stock.

I tripped the flash counter on my ATT SGS2 and it even had the big triangle with exclamation point come up on boot after the counter was triggered. I had a problem with calls dropping and they could not determine the cause and I was able to swap it out for a new one in store even with a custom rom and the counter tripped. The guy at the ATT store didnt even pay attention when it booted up with the big triangle on the screen. I don't know if this guy just missed this or if ATT just doesnt care all together.
I think if you are really worried about your warranty then I would wait until a solution comes around to either reset the counter or root without tripping it in the first place just to be safe. Because when I got my replacement SGS2 they had already come up with another method that did not trip the flash counter.

Unfortunately atm rooting will trigger your flash counter and there is no way of resetting it, if im not mistaken.

Picking up this bad boy today. I wanted to root it first thing for no ads and to use mybackuproot to restore all my apps from my old HD2, but I guess I'll wait. If I get a bad screen or something I don't want them to say "well you tripped the flash counter, so we can't do **** for you"
if its a hardware problem they still have to replace it weather you rooted it or not. bad hardware is bad hardware. i have had people atleast on sprint return devices that had custom roms for what ever reason and as long as its a true hardware issue it would play no difference on the return

depends on how you root. rooting a phone wont do much of anything. messing with your kernel will. kernel is what gets you in trouble most of the time.

I mean the carrier can say "no" to everything even if obviously the root didn't cause the problem because technically rooting voids the warranty. I've known Sprint to do this.
I'm not talking about what they "should" do or if rooting does anything bad, I'm talking about what ATT ACTUALLY does in these cases.
Buy a USB download jig. It resets your flash counter back to 0.

Read the forums. People have already tested and said multiple times that the jigs don't work on the Note due to a new bootloader.
I'm just curious as I'm new to this.
Not being a negative thinker here, but is there a chance that there will NEVER be a method that will reset the counters back to 0? Jig or what other methods can be used?
I love the Note and I was really excited on all this rooting stuff until I found out about this one. I have bad luck with gadgets as they fail on me most of the time even before the contract is up. It would be a pain that if it happens, Samsung will deny me the warranty because of that after paying $299.
Or could this "New Bootloader" be the new "Locked bootloader" (Like the Atrix when it was lauched?)
Thanks

Yes I have read the forums.
It does work on the new bootloader (been tested and done on 2.3.6). For reference see this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888
However on the AT&T version it has not been tested yet. Only on the Int'l version. I would wait for confirmation to see if and when the AT&T version has been tested.
Another way to do it, once ICS 4.0 comes on this phone, is to use Chainfire's app called TriangleAway (have to be rooted) and you can reset the counter back to 0 as well. Someone did it on their Int'l Note by flashing the ICS 4.0 leak and then using TriangleAway. Then using Odin to put on another ROM.8
So basically the questions are
1) can you flash something which does not trip the counter which can be fully restored to stock that roots your phone?
2) Is there a way to bring the trip counter back to zero?

International bootloader =/= AT&T Bootloader. The different SoC's and build dates along with other factors mean that we can't use the jig method right now. There is no downgrade bootloader for use to use, even. We're stuck.

Read the thread for Triangle Away, it explains this.
Flash the stock rom for your region.
It will revert back to normal
Sorry to hijack your thread, but i noticed mine says the same, and i havent flashed it. However i have root access, so i guess that is enough to make it "modified".
Would this go back to normal, if i unroot it?
Funnily enough, I noticed this just today on mine - mine is an original unlocked phone, all I've done is root it.

Rooting it involves an "unauthorised" flash. You need to Triangle Away, pull the battery then revert to stock... As detailed in the Triangle Away post.
Just follow these two video in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613
And you will be able to have your phones status say "Normal" instead of "Modified"

oh, I thought you asked if they can read that if you send the phone to them
nah, I don't think they'll do that
sorry should have been more specific. I was meaning if they can digitally read it from their diagnostic software or whatever they have. I've never worked in a cell phone call center. Maybe I should go get a job at one just to scope out what they can and cannot find out by just a push of a button.
keep us updated
Some one who hasn't Rooted, please go to the Settings/About Device/Status page and tell me what it says at the very bottom? Mine says "Device status Modified" I've rooted.

Just talked with my buddy (nakedninja) who explained what this is, apparently each individual phone ships with a specific device id, whenever modified software, ROM, kernel etc... is flashed it re issues an id. As long as its different from the original, Samsung and ATT will know that the phone had been modified. The question is, can that id be reverted or saved in some way, to Bead restored in case the phone needs to be exchanged.
Thanks nakedninja for the info, let's hope something its figured out, flash counters can be reset easy enough... But modifying, inserting editing the device id may be trickier... But with our bad ass Dev team I'm sure it will be of no concern

I believe that all the other flash counter protocols have been defeated, given enough time for the devs to work on it, I may be wrong though, but it seems they have figured this out and that's why they worked in this secondary script to reveal modified devices... This is my speculation and based on what I have gather here on XDA. Though I can must definitely be wrong, won't be the first time and won't be the last.

I think you're right in that it's a matter of "when" vs "if" the counter can be reset. It really just depends on the priority of some of the talented devs with the knowhow that will determine the speed in which it's found.
I know from some of the other devices I've been following, it took a handful of folks that either wanted the challenge or the counter meant something to them (presumably for warranty purposes) to really get going.
Most likely the method will probably be the same (or very close) for all the North American variants - so with the amount of American and Canadian devs, hopefully at least one is up to the task! I'm personally really interested in the solution myself before rooting because I've had several warranty exchanges in the past on some of my phones, and I'd like to err on the side of caution.
I am coming from Sony phones my last 3 I flashed standard Sony firmware for North America, rather than the att branded ones. Two were not android. To me this is an annoying complication, since Sony would update standard firmware and there were tons of sites that had flash services and firmware.
I expect that there will be fixes released in the next two months, I don't want to be shut out just because I don't like the att software.

I want to use the toolkit to do it easily without ODIN and all so I guess my flash counter will go up one. what disadvantages does this have?

No limit. It's basically in indicator to Samsung or the repair facility whether or not you've modified the firmware in any way, and if it's clear you have it's pretty much an automatic void of your warranty if they notice it. Triangle Away does not work on the US variants from all I've read. The only disadvantage is upping your flash counter and running the chance of having a warranty claim denied as a result.

even though all the Samsung Galaxy S3 are using Ice Cream Sandwich Android OS, on top of that, they are all using Samsung altered TouchWiz. The best example I can think of to this is Windows Blind on top of Windows OS.
After that, each needs slightly different software and even hardware due to difference in operation of between each cell company + technologies + what they want and don't want and etc. Basically, they are technically the same phone but they are all slightly different, and this slight difference what makes certain roms and apps work on XXXX carrier but not on YYYY carrier.
also International and Domestic version has a entirely different processor, which is why there is Cyanogenmod and other tweaks and the USA models don't

Great. I, like a dumbass, decided to try and root my new phone without a backup plan. I have had no luck using the XDA video, and now I'm stuck with the "Please select recovery mode in Kies" screen. Kies doesn't recognize it, and I have no way to restore the stock ROM. Is my only option to wait until a stock firmware ROM is released, like it was for sprint?
Based on the information we're currently provided with, I think it'd be safe to say you're screwed for now. Why you would even try to root a device that doesn't currently have any rooting methods is beyond me. You should definitely read up before you try anything you're not sure of.
The only other option you'd have at this point is taking the phone into Verizon, showing them the screen and telling them that this is how it has looked since it came out of the box. Although it's a lie, and you bricked it out of your own neglect, the reps can't really turn you away.
Can you return it?

Just take it to Verizon play dumb and get it replaced. It's within the 14 days so it will be swapped on the spot. They wont/don't care what's wrong with it.
The suggestion of just return it to the store, they won't notice, is a really **** move and I'm not saying that in defense of Verizon. I'm saying it that it is things like that that in the end cause more harm to the end user than good. They up costs and add charges, create obscene policies, etc. It may not negatively impact you immediately, but when multiple people do this all over the country it adds up.
