Ok so I'm new to trying to root a phone and have held off as long as possible. I have rooted my Asus Transformer before. My problem is that AT&T has so many trash applications running in the background that even when I use the Task Killer they still pop up sometimes immediately after killing them. Two nights ago I took my phone off the charger around 9pm *Full charge* and I use it as a alarm clock and it was dead before the alarm went off at 5am. Before I got in bed I used the Task Killer and killed everything.
Now I've been waiting for the offical ICS from AT&T and getting annoyed at how long they are taking to be honest. I've tried to uninstall some of the applications but all it lets me do is "Uninstall Updates" while the core program is there and than the Google Play bugs me to death about updating them. Is there a way to remove all the bloatware without doing a custom ROM? Any help would be appreciated!

The offical ICS is avaible without bloatware. Just download and flash in cwm.

I can't figure it out, but in the last two-three days, I've had considerable slowdown on all apps and ADW menus and homescreens. Is there an easy way to figure out what is using all the resources and remove it? I have gone over everything that I have installed in the last few days and deleted most of them, but I still have the lag and I can't figure this out. From the time I rooted and updated to 026, the phone has been great and pretty fast and the batt life has been pretty good as well, but now all of that has changed, so something is killing my phone slowly. Any ideas/help/similar stories??
Thanks for your help guys..
"spare parts" gives you various stats under battery usage, you could check what apps etc have been using up CPU time - could give you a clue?
Also bug reporter will let you email the log files to yourself for inspection.
Thanks for the quick response... I totally forgot about spare parts. It was helpful and the problem has been resolved. Back to normal and fast again...
Thanks for the help...
I find that if I leave my phone on too long without restarting then it tends to start lagging up a lot. I usually have to restart every 3-4 days.
agreed.. I find the same issue-- a required restart every few days or the phone begins to lag quite a bit. Not sure of the cause though.

Could you tell what the problem was and how you managed to isolate it? Thanks

The problem seemed to be with fancy widgets, so I figured the update didn't install right, so I uninstalled it, re-installed it and rebooted the phone and everything is a-ok..
But, I did use spare parts to isolate the usage stats..
where is everyone getting fancy widgets? cuz i'm not seeing it on the market
edit: kk so i found a download for it on google. next question. you said your's recently updated.... to what version? i just got 1.2.4..
I'm sure 1.3.0 was the last version they made before they stopped..
here ya go!!

The laggy problem after long time not reboot which your guys mention was caused by applications running, i think. Did you try Task killer? If not, after a day, there are many running program in the cache and your fone would soom run out of memory.
I do use advanced task killer pro and some cache cleaner as well, but even so, I still have to reboot every few days or the slowdown problem re-emerges..
I am keeping my eyes on the usage stats in case I have some rogue program that just eats memory too often.
And glad I did. Not that you can more than 3 times, but it buys me some time to read what's up, makes some preparations, and glad I did.
1. GPS removed it seems (or ability to turn it on)
2. some reboot issues & failed ICS installs due to rooted users (like me) removing bloatware (not me)
3. interesting claim ramp up in CPU speed (but it is being debated)
4. keep root with Root keeper BEFORE doing ICS
Again, we can only put it off 3 times and I used my first time to put off for a "day". But I like sitting back and watching everyone else tell what they see.. Anyone else putting it off?
I will wait. Is there not a file we can rename so as not to be forced?

So far, I am loving it. Everything is more smooth.
I was rooted and used Rootkeeper and still have root. Installed and booted just fine for me. GPS being removed sucks. Even though GPS sucked, at least let us have what we had
So far so good for me, crossing my fingers that it doesn't come crashing down tomorrow
I didn't wait I started the update hoped in the irc for my phone and jcase was like yo Haro don't forget to use voodoo to keep root and I was like ****!!!! so now I get to play the waiting game again for when this thing will be rooted.. I hate waiting. I've waited a lot for this thing lol

I got a stable tablet, going to ride it out a few days but will have to in the end. But waiting has already saved me some aggravation as I have been able to backup some files and settings and such. I am eager, but patient on this.
I see GPS under Settings > Personal > Location Services > GPS Satellites. Maybe I'm mistaken?
GPS is not removed mine works go to locations and turn it on
GPS is in settings? Still there. Also, had root, froze some bloatware apps, did the update, no problems at all. Root is gone, but I'm sure they'll get it back very soon.
Yeah, some are now reporting it is just removed from the quick settings menu which is uber lame IMHO. I like quick access to settings like that.. Seems like they are doing what they can to make it "disappear" without removing it. Out of sight, out of mind. Going to have to use a lame GPS widget instead.

1. do bookmarks correctly sync with chrome yet?
2. does the battery usage setting now correctly show installed apps and not just system processes?

1. No idea
2. Nope
#2 was a hugely touted function and improvement in ICS - enough so that at the ICS conference months back they took the time to show it off. Nice to see Asus did not upgrade their kernel to take advantage of a pretty great native ICS feature

My TF101 will go to ICS a week or so after the ROM I'm using is updated to account for it.
When it arrives, my TF201 will be updated all the way to the current version.
Always have a backup plan .

The point of this thread was NOT to start an ICS *****ing thread, it was suppose to be about finding out if there were others that were patient enough to wait and see how it unfolds. It took a turn I could not control.
Anyway, you can postpone 3 times. 1 options is "1 day". I did that last night and expected 24hrs and yet this morning, I had to use my second postpone and selected 1 day again and then a mere 15 minutes I had to use it again.... so I have 1 left but I guess "1 day" i not 24 hours
Hello everyone,
I've been reading the forum for a while and two weeks ago I decided to buy a galaxy s3 (the international version).
So far, I am more than satisfied with the phone but I experience the following issue:
First of all, even after restarting the phone, without opening any user apps, the ram usage is over 650mb out of the 830 available.
The problem is the following: Let's say that I open facebook and chrome. When changing between those 2 apps everything is ok.
Afterwards, I open instagram. When i want to turn from instagram to facebook/chrome, I have to wait at least 3 seconds looking at a white screen waiting for facebook to open. (Chrome even reloads the pervious page). It seems as if those apps were force closed and then restarted. (At that point, the ram usage reaches about 780mb).
In order to see what's going on, i opened two apps and looked at the task manager: Those apps were shown as "running". When opening a third app, one of the previous ones suddenly disappears from the task manager as if it has stopped running.
I'm running on android 4.1.1., stock rom without root and without any limit on background processes via developer options.
Is this normal? I mean... shouldn't s3 be able to flawlessly change between 3-4 apps without having to wait several seconds for the app to start (or re-start maybe) ?
Also, do you think that if i root my phone and flash a custom rom, will this problem be solved?
Thanks in advance
Hmm, the thing is how the Android is working, you can't have 'loaded'a lot of app, since there are simply not enough memory to keep these app in your memory phone. You can't do nothing about that expect:
Google: 'supercharge' and spent decent time understanding what is that.
Google: 'multiTasking mod v7' quick boost for your memory.
P.S update your system to 4.1.2 not sure if memory management will be better but this is must.
Try downloading 'omega kitchen' from the play store and grab from there 'mods'-'supercharge'

Remove all bloatware, 1gb ram is not enough to run everything on s3. I have to also freeze apps and unfreeze them before I need them. It's ridiculous really. Processes on s3 use 2 or 3 times more ram than nexus 7
Sent via TCP/IP
Samsung made a big mistake giving the S3 1gb RAM.
Ignore everyone that says 'unused RAM is wasted RAM' while this is a totally valid statement, and in other Android devices very true, it's not the case for the S3. RAM on this phone is not managed well at all, if it gets below about 150mb the device gets slow and unusable.
Also multi tasking on the S3 is non existent, unless you modify ROM or framework, remove bloatware etc
I wod recommend a nice light ROM like Slim ROM or use JKay mod.
JKay mod has some awesome features to help lock apps in memory.

Thanks everyone for your quick and helpful replies.:good:
I rooted my phone with exynosabuse v1.4 and used gemini app manager to lock some bloatware apps.
Ram usage was minimized by at least 200mb and now i can keep 3-4 apps running so I can flawlessly multitask.
Although I've done some reading, I am not actually sure about two things:
1. I've read that when rooting the phone or flashing a ram, you activate a counter. Do you know if rooting with exynosabuse activates the counter?
2. The official 4.1.2 will be soon available in my country. I would like to know if i can update my phone via OTA or Kies now that it is rooted. And if i do so, do I lose my root?
Thanks
Exynos abuse won't increase the counter.
No you won't get OTA if you are rooted, once you install stock firmware root access will be lost.

So I got the S4 a couple weeks ago. First ever Android phone. Love it but I am noticing that things run really well upon reboot, but after I've had the phone on for a couple days it starts to get more and more laggy. I notice that in the RAM section of Task Manager the in-use memory gradually increases AFTER I "clear memory." Like on a fresh boot it will be around 700MB, after a day of use it will clear to 800MB, after another day it will clear to 900MB. So somehow there are applications running that don't show up in task manager, and I think this is what is causing it.
I've done a LOT to speed up the phone. Turned off windows and transition animations, frozen lots of unnecessary apps, turned off broadcast receivers on a lot of apps for bootup... There's gotta be a way to figure this out, I don't want to be resigned to having to reboot my phone every two days.
Anyone have to deal with the same thing/found a solution?

Just running S4 stock out-of-the-box
Hello XDA Community, I have come to turn to you looking for a little bit of light to bed shed on my first forray into real mobile technology and learning to root.
I recently was ably to root my Note 3 (n900a - mj5) with Kingo, and it was incredibly easy! I have this community to thank for helping me find that information. After doing a basic root ( no flashing or anything) I went ahead and started to remove all of the bloatware on my device. I followed some basic guides and the spreadsheet for Bloatware that is floating around, and I can also reverse any particular uninstall if I need to. Everything seems to function fine, but what I have noticed since rooting my phone (which I basically did right away, so I have no real comparison as to how it should function normally) was that I often get a notification "Unfortunately, X program has stopped working" with various programs. It initially started while I was doing the first uninstalls with Advanced Uninstall Expert. I would queue up a number of programs to uninstall, and after a couple would go it would inevitably give me the aforementioned notification. It doesn't cause many serious problems, but it is certainly disconcerting on a new device to see it so much.
So to my main question, does this seem like something I may have caused with maybe a small uninstall of a system program (even though it happened before I had uninstalled more than a couple of simple obvious apps) or is this maybe an instability with the phone / OS? Should I unroot and factory reset, then use it normally to see if this still persists? I just picked the phone up on Friday and so I am within my 14 day period, and I still have 0x0 so I could do that if this seems like a problem with the device. I am just very inexperienced in regards to this field and want to reference any other sources I can.
Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer regarding this problem, I look forward to seeing any responses you have for me.
Sounds like you are just freezing apps and not deleting them? How are you going about freezing them? Is it Knox security warnings by chance? Did install recovery and make a backup? I would unfreeze all apps if you have in fact just been freezing them so you are stock other than root and try it out for a day. If it's still happening you may need to Odin back to stock and see if that helps.

Thank you so much for the reply.I usually just press the home button to exit and then I will use the app manager to end the active processes. I recently found the way to clear apps from memory and I'm keeping an eye on it now. The only weird thing is I seem to be running about a constant. .9 gigs in my ram when only swift key is running even after clearing my ram so I'm trying to figure out what that's all about. Anyways I will most likely Odin to stock and take a slower approach to trying things out. Thank you once again for the information.

Nothing wrong with .9 gigs ram. On odex blue I usually sit around 1.4 to 1.6 gigs. Not sure what your looking to get out of it but your not going to see better running touch wiz. There are a few debloated roms you may want to try rather than trying to accomplish it yourself.

I have 2 Note 3's in our household rooted with Kingo and they don't have such problems. Sounds to me like you've frozen or uninstalled some programs that are causing the unstableness. I've been too enthusiastic before in the past freezing and deleting bloatware & other system apps and experienced similar issues as yours.
These days, I keep the freezing and deleting to a minimum.
