Now that its looking more and more likely that the 'Q' in the Photon Q LTE stands for Qwerty, how many of you would upgrade or buy it?
According to some rumors, the base handset model is the Motorola Asanti and headed to ATT (XT898), Verizon (XT896) and Sprint (XT897).
The rumored specs aren't that great for this handset.
CPU Clock: 1512 MHz
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960
Display Resolution: 540 x 960
No big screen, no HD resolution, no kickstand etc.
Of course, all of this is simply conjecture until Sprint and/or Motorola reveals the device.
But seeing as how disappointing the device seems to be how many would upgrade to it?
How many users like the 'eVOLTe' over this rumored Qwerty device?
I for one, would take a 4.7" with Swype over a 4.3" Qwerty. That means the 'eVOLTe' for me, come December.

No thanks, not enough of a performance improvement to switch and wait for the development. And the QWERTY keyboards that slide tend to break easy.
And I like my kickatand, HD screen and camera too much to downgrade

I was a HUGE qwerty fan and absolutely loved my epic 4g and now I have tried touchpal, swype, swiftkey, AI type, hackers keyboard, and many many more. I hate everything about on screen keyboards. Most force me to use words I don't mean to use but I use frequently. Swypos are soo annoying. They are never consistent across applications. I can't ever see what I'm typing, sometimes it gets it right, but never at the bottom of web pages. Randomly the veiwing windows will freeze up. They never work right with different dpi's. Highlighting words is such a chore (hw KB has shift key and arrow keys) . Abbreviations are never easy. I could have typed this so much faster on my epic, well at least a third faster. I don't even have big fingers lol.
I freaking miss that hardware keyboard I will preorder the photon q as soon as it is announced.

No way in hell if the new photon is that qwerty leak moto has lost my business i will wait for the next nexus device or that lg 4x looks promising. I love my photon but the locked bootloader is killing me know i need access to the newest leaks.

I really was expecting (hoping) for a cross between the eVOLTe and the Photon.
Basically, the same Photon we have now, but with a better CPU, bigger screen (4.7"or 4.8").
If the Photon Q turns out to be indeed the Asanti, then I don't see many current owners migrating to it. Maybe some new users, there are plenty of people who still like a physical keyboard.
However, for me personally, the eVOLTe fulfills all the features I want in my next phone; big screen, powerful CPU, uSD slot, camera button. The only negatives are lack of access to the battery and SIM card. The battery I don't mind but the SIM should have been accessible.
In any case, due to the lack of any other better phone, the eVOLTe is it for me; unless the Photon Q surprises us.
Hell no! Qwerty keyboards suck.
Depressing if that's the replacement.

I have been told several times to wait for the Thunderbolt to come out, and I'm kind of underwhelmed. It's got the same 1ghz CPU that phones have had for a year or so now, and if I read it correctly, 700 something mb of RAM. I didn't think they even released phones that had less than 1gb of RAM nowadays. I have heard people say that this phone stock is screaming fast, faster than hacked last gen phones. Can anyone explain to me what makes this phone so much faster? Should I go ahead and use my ugprade on this or wait for dual core phones?
Well, it's a second gen snapdragon processor which is faster and more efficient. 768MB of ram isn't low at all.
As far as dual-core phones go, you'll be waiting a bit to actually take advantage of both cores as Android isn't dual-core optimized yet.
The TB is fast, no question about that.
Also the dual core phones' battery consumption will be even worse on Lte. Finally exactly what do we need dual cores for?
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Exactly. Dual core has been talked for years and yet no one really makes software. My wife and I just switched from the mytouch 4G to the thunderbolt and it is way faster.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
I would say get the TB and by the time you are due for another upgrade they should have the software setup by then along with better batteries to make dual cores useful.
You should wait, definitely wait...
Of course, by the time those new better-than-the-Thunderbolt phones are actually available, you'll have waited 2-3 months and have been using your not-better-than-the-Thunderbolt phone for that much longer.
And then, when you can finally get those newer/faster/better phones in hand, they'll have announced that the quad-core phones with 5G will be out in 4-6 months and you'll be back here asking if you should wait for them.
I'm being facetious, so don't take it personally, it's not an attack on you. I'm just trying to drive home the fact that there is ALWAYS a better device on the horizon in 2-3 months, and that whatever you buy today won't be the top of the line device for very long. Just get what best suits your needs today at the price you want to pay.
For me, the Thunderbolt's a mixed bag. I love the VZW coverage and voice quality. LTE is amazing fast, it rivals my Verizon FIOS internet line on the download speeds in some tests. On the other hand, I'm just not thrilled by the TFT display. Not that it's bad, but I'm a real SAMOLED-addict and the lack of real blacks on this thing makes me nuts. It's a keeper, I don't plan on returning it, but I'm also the kind of guy who doesn't mind having multiple phones, on multiple carriers, and upgrading a device every quarter. (In just the last year I've gone through a Nexus 1, Galaxy S i9000, EVO 4G, iPhone 4, Nexus S. I still own and sometimes use each of those except the EVO (Sprint service in LA is just too slow). YMMV.
A bit offtopic I would wait for Samsung 4g. I love tb but it lacks nice app like readerhub, musichub, mediahub. I feel like Sammy is a tad ahead of HTC when it comes to apps

What are you doing that you are not thrilled by the TFT display??? Anyone who uses a phone as a primary gaming or movie viewing device it whacked. A phone will never replace a quality TV, gaming PC, or xbox, and why would you want it to. The screen looks great. I just don't get it.

Nothing like gaming...I don't expect my phone to replace a gaming device.
There's no comparison of a TFT screen to a SAMOLED, though. Blacks on a SAMOLED are inky black...a TOTAL absence of color or light emissions. Blacks on the Thunderbolt are not real black...they're a back-lit purplish black. Bring up a pure black image full screen on the Nexus S and the Thunderbolt in a dark room at the same time. The Nexus S will emit zero light, the Thunderbolt will seem like a flashlight by comparison. It's just my preference; and like I said originally, not a deal breaker for me, I'm keeping the phone for all its other plusses, but the screen is not the best in my opinion...good enough, but not the best.
I was torn between this & the Bionic.
I love the dual-core concept with it's processing efficiency - that is, once Android can properly support & use it. If you buy the Bionic this summer you might not be able to take advantage of the 2 cores for several more months.
I hate the idea of a locked bootloader (like the Moto phones have). Once I saw that the Bolt was rooted pre-release, and had an unlocked bootloader within 36 hours I hatched a plan. I bought the Bolt on a 1 year plan (it is MUCH faster than my old Eris).
Part 2 of my plan: hopefully by next January when I can upgrade HTC will have a dual core or quad core that we can crack. This way I have better hardware for the next 10-12 months, an unlocked dual core next year, and a grandfathered-in unlimited 4g data plan. As a bonus, I might be able to sell the Bolt to help pay for it's replacement!
Hi all,

Get evo.
Battery life is a valid concern. I'm on Evo forum EVERY DAY, and I see lots of people claim 24+ hrs battery life. I don't get anywhere near that. I suppose it just comes down to tuning. There is tons of dev support in the Evo forums. Still, after more than a year. There's tons of rom and kernels to choose from.
Evo devs are dropping new ports at an amazing rate. Hell, we're running roms that haven't even been publicly released.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

I dont want to get a phone on contract, and dont really have a need for 4G right now. So basically, I'm looking for a phone to hold me out for maybe a year atleast...
the Droid X2's 540x960 resolution, lack of front facing camera and being a solid 3g phone is what sold me on it. bottom line it's a motorola communication device, and they do what they need to do and take a beating. F HTC and their easily hackable bootloaders. the easiest to hack devices are gonna be the first to get taken out by malware and viruses once they start becoming more prevalent (and they will)
my droid X2 is fast as hell, gets great battery life (compared to what I read from others) and I can modify as much as I need to as it can still be rooted and I'm running the ported Atrix 2.3.4 rom w/ some bloat removed. I don't have any of the problems others complain about with this phone (media playback, sound/video issues)
I've literally tried every hack, script, and rom out there along with a few little tweaks of my own and this is the first android device I've EVER had that I've felt was adequate. I've had more than my fair share of HTC junk, and that's exactly how I feel about that taiwanese crap. so far this X2 has been through hell, I gave up on cases and protectors (cause they don't fit quite right and make the docks impossible to use) and it's got some battle scars from work and play (it even got run over by a K5 blazer while I was 4-wheelin in the colorado rockies) and it just won't die... every HTC I ever had I swear started just failing after being dropped once or twice with the exception of my old 8125, it took full immersion in a pan full of hot engine coolant to finally kill it, and it worked for a good 2 weeks after that happened until the keyboard and touchscreen became basically unresponsive. it's only a matter of time until this device is unlockable (seriously, give me ONE example of SOMETHING out there that runs software and could not be hacked/cracked/exploited in some way)
i'll put it in this perspective, launcher icons in a 5 wide 7 high grid. I can fit EVERYTHING I need on ONE homescreen with no overlap, an 800x480 screen will not do that.
my only complaint about the phone is the camera SUCKS in low light, but it's just a crappy CMOS phone camera with a plastic lens, what do you expect? I've NEVER used a camera phone for any really important pictures anyway. I want my phone to first and foremost be a COMMUNICATION DEVICE and when it comes to solid radio technology, you can NEVER go wrong with anything motorola (so long as it doesn't flip or slide)
but then again, I was born with a keyboard in my hand and an insatiable thirst for knowledge of all things electrical/electonic, mechanical and everything in between.
^^^ jealousy is the worst emotion.
More politics in xda then Washington.
I'd double check getting that evo onto page plus. I couldn't get my thunderbolt on there because of the 4g radio.
With regard to the Droid x2, I've got a real love hate relationship with this thing. It's really picky and takes a ron of fine tuning to get it working fluidly, in my experience. But, in my experience it gives the best photos of any phone I've used. They don't look very good on the screen (pentile is horrible with color banding), but they reproduce really well on other media.
My dinc2, which you should also consider, functions much more reliably without all these freaking scripts with dozens of parameters to tweak. But, the video frame rates can't match those of the dx2, and photos are not as good.
Always boils down to what you need. I'm about ready to throw my dx2 under the next bus that passes by if it stutters on me again.

Durable? I dropped it once from hip distance and now the screen had a hairline crack in the bottom corner. not sure about being ran over..

Evo is a Sprint phone. Page plus uses Verizon phones. X2 with tegra doesn't seem to have any advantages besides good video codec support. Nothing amazing optimized for tegra and the single core phones have so much more customization going for them. And all Motorola qhd screens suck. Colors including video look washed out.
Htc's qhd like on sensation use normal rgb lcds vs. The new moto (DROID 3, x2, bionic, photon, ATRIX) using pentile rgbw.
I wouldn't recommend this phone for a few reasons, one of which is tegra has little going for it especially on this phone. Everything is optimized for snapdragon, even if this phone should technically be more powerful.
If u do a lit of music listening from device don't go with x2. Otherwise great phone. Stupid st..ut.ter..s...I..a.mm.g...g ..ettett ...img...tired of music skips ;(
I've been with android since the G1 before there was even a touch screen keyboard available. I love having a phyical keyboard. I went from the G1 to the MyTouch 3G slide which was ok but its not a full keyboard and you have to shift for numbers. The G2 seems to have been that last high end QWERTY that was worth buying. I dony consder anything from the mytouch line high end. The Droid 4 seems great but not being able to upgrade the battery is a huge downfall since i always buy extended batteries. I have a G2x which is a great phone spec wise but i am truly sick of touch screen typing. Does anyone else feel that companys are trying to hard to make phones that look like iphones? I see a ton of great devices coming but none with physical keyboards, is it a dying breed? Am i the only person who wants one still?

I think that demand isn't high enough for them to spend money trying to make a slim QWERTY and touch capable mobile. For now anyway
I have been waiting for the same you lose to much screen for the touch keyboard and its not as accurate I think I thought the galaxy captivate was going to be it but its sucks all around even the keyboard they didn't even leave enough room to use the top row so I hate the phone completely and it seem that Samsung isn't really untreated in making any others

Yeah i dont get it, the 1st android had a full keyboard and it was great, the same with the G2 but since then you dont see anything worth buying. I dont even care about a slim factor, i always put extended batteries on my phone since phone technolgy gets better bet batteries stay the same so its either stay tethered to a charger or buy a big battery. I dont care how big the keyboard makes the phone ill still make it bigger with the battery and be happy that i dont have to type with the touch screen and not to mention it makes playing emulators alot easier
There's the MyTouch 4G slide on T-Mobile, Droid 4 on Verizon, and the Samsung Captivate Glide on at&t all of which are pretty well specced if you ask me

The problem is that i have tmobile. The droid 4 almost made me switch till i found out you cant replace the battery. Tmobile was the first to embrace android with the G1 and now they seem to be getting the shaft, the G2 was the last phone that i really liked. The mytouch line is a joke i hate anything that doesnt come with stock android and you have to jump through hoops to have true root.
I'm using the Droid 3 which still has a removable battery, global SIM, a 4" screen and a great keyboard. Great hardware, but unfortunately Motorola isn't very dev friendly. But good qwerty phones seem to be a dying breed. If the Droid # series continue to have non removable batteries I am doing to have to find another phone series.
from which i see that there is no physical QWERTY phone in the future in the past even they had it also is not the the high end phone
I think people are more interested in a thin profile rather than a physical keyboard.
It's sad. I love QWERTY keyboards. If the keys are made right then nothing else compares when typing on a mobile device.
I've heard rumors on some phone forums that HTC will be having a new phone with a super slim slide out qwerty. Don't know how true thats going to be since all high end smartphones have touch screen keyboards. I'm with you on having a physical keyboard since I've had Blackberry's for years then got an Evo 4G.

It is sad, its like we have to settle for touch screen since the only qwerty phones that come out never have the specs of the high end touch only phones. Key example i was going to buy a G2 but the G2x has better specs so i had to settle with not having a keyboard unless i wanted to have a less powerful phone.

Loved my first Rezound, until it started overheating 131F. Verizon replaced it.
Loved my second Rezound, until first YouTube stopped working completely then the internet stopped working intermittently. It only worked when it wanted to.
My 3rd Rezound was defective right out of the box. Would not read a SIM card at all.
Strike 3,... and now I have a Razr Maxx. I miss the true 720p display the Rezound had,...but that's it. The Razr Maxx other than the less than perfect display has run flawless in all areas.... Except one.....
..... I think the Rezounds Adreno 220 is a faster smother GPU than the Razr's PowerVR SGX540 GPU, in most games. I've only found one game where the Razr way our performs the Rezound and thats Modern Combat 3, which is almost like playing a PC game its so smooth. On my Rezound it was laggy.
Oh well I'm enjoying the Razr but I still feel a little torn because I've been an HTC fan for years.
The battery is the only thing I'd want.
buy an extra battery for 25 and problem solved
HTC cameras still beat the rest. Samsung is decent, and Motorola has been the worst for quite some time. It's a shame really, since Moto is the only one still trying to keep a good hardware keyboard phone in their lineup. I hope they get that sorted out with some decent sensors in the next generation.

I think this year there won't be any big big changes in phones, mostly 720p, dual core, and 1080p camera will become a very standard feature... Hmmm what's next, quad core, ahhh I really don't see the hype for it, give me dual core at over 2ghz and **** load of ram, and maybe a graphics card !!!!!

You get no argument out of me.
The Rezound has a far superior display and GPU.
But now that the honeymoon is over as far as functionality is concerned the Razr works better. Swype is way more advanced than HTC's.. I'm using it all the time now.... Even right now.
As soon as they make a new HTC that's thin and light weight with a stock 3300 mAh battery with Gorilla Glass. That doesn't have the problems. I'm back on board.
Had a long conversation with HTC yesterday and they are currently working on a patch for the Internet connectivity problems on the Rezound. Verizon tech support told me they have had several come back worth this very issue. HTC is hoping ICS will help.

Now that the Samsung SIII has been officially announced for Sprint, how many of you are taking the leap? Any new features you can't wait to use? Anything you are concerned about that's stopping you from taking the leap?
Staying put. I want the Note!

I'll stay with the Photon for awhile.
Back in the WinMo days, a new phone would have more memory, etc - something to differentiate it.
Android phones, IMO, have reached the point of commoditization - I'm not seeing compelling features that make me want to upgrade. All current phones have good screen res, battery usage, memory, etc. The Photon is about as large a phone as I'd want.
I'll wait and see what, if any complaints there are re: the radios.

I need a worldphone, and Sprint's version of the s3 wont have those capabilities (based on what I have read).
all teh sprint phones are gunna have teh dual core s4 chips, the evo lte and sgs3 have big 720p screens. they all will have internal storage and high res cameras....
really it boils down to which manufacturer you want, locked bootloader vs unlocked, sense vs blur vs touchwiz vs lg
I'm sticking with the Photon until the next Nexus. I've been thinking of the Galaxy Nexus, but the PowerVR 540 is just too antiquated at this point.

I don't have an upgrade for another year. I see myself having a windows phone 8 device along with a windows 8 tablet, and of course my windows rig which will probably remain windows 7. As much as I enjoy android, for some reason I just don't see myself sticking with it.

What do you like so much about Windows Phone 8?
Bigger than 4.3" is a deal breaker for me.

It's not necessarily that im in love with the platform more than it is that it's the only one i havnt delved into extensively. I was a Winmo fan back in the day, then i fell in love with webOS, and the Mopho is my first Android. So the only one i havnt experienced to the fullest is windows phone.
Most notably, i enjoy the idea of every one of my devices being seamlessly in sync with one another. Plus, it just seems like android is so damn fragmented. The way it's put together feels almost, sloppy, to me. I can't really explain it. Did i mention wp is downright gorgeous?

Since the SIII is almost as large as the Note, what has you want that device specifically?
S pen + folio case
Also hopefully sprint is working on a GS3 version (S4 cpu + 2gb ram) which would be great but if its the OG note on sprint it should be cheaper by now.

i agree, all the phones are pretty much the same. big clear screens, 8mp cameras, same storage, same RAM, all 1Ghz + dual cpus... Honestly the specs have me bored. The only thing that raised my eyebrows is the extra 100mAh in the battery. for me, all i need is a phone that can connect to the web, answer and make clear phone calls and have battery to last me the day (add more days and ill be even happier)
But with this all said, im headed off to the store to upgrade my mother from the original EVO 4G to the EVO LTE (i figure it will be an easy change for her since its still HTC Sence) Her biggest concern is knowing where the camera and video recorder is to capture grandkids.
Me personally, im sitting on my photon for a few reasons. 1.i paid the full 650+ for the photon so im going to use it till it dies. 2.my upgrade is a ways out 3.World phone is a must for me now. 4.i got ICS on the photon (thanks devs)
Edit: just picked up the EVO LTE for my mother, very impressive. great feel to the phone. made a phone call and great audio. im sure anyone who buys the phone will not be upset, BUT its CDMA only. after playing with it for the day, i must say its VERY impressive. Im tempted to buy one for use in the US and then keep my photon for travels. im curious to see what LTE sprint will give. store said to expect towers to come online towards the end of this month (houston tx). ill be watching her phone and seeing how the battery does. It makes my photon feel like a brick and a tiny brick! that screen is MONSTER when next to the photon.
I'm probably going to pick up a galaxy nexus sometime this year. I'm not worried about having the latest or greatest.

I'm planning to replace my photon when:
1. LTE will come here and MoPho won't support it.
2. There will be some really good replacement for MoPho, but I really don't see any good now. I don't know why it's so hard to make good device like MoPho is.
I would like if Motorola will come with new device like our Photon. If they will create second upgraded photon, I would be happy.
For me & wife (EVO 3D and Photon) 4G has rarely been reliable while moving - even in large markets (Chicago, LA, San Fran, Houston...). I guess we'll have to see if LTE is better.
But, in my case, very high speed on my cell phone is getting increasingly irrelevant - don't need high speed while in car moving. And when stationary, normally have free WiFi available and use my tablet. YMMV, of course, that's just my usage pattern.
