[Q] [ATT] Cell Standby is more than 50 around NY - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Hey guys,
I got my S 3 devices on last Friday (22 June) and since then the battery is worse when I check what is using battery it seems “Cell Standby”, I am not using the device heavily actually. I am living in NY, Manhattan area which ATT has LTE. I read some of the thread in XDA they suggesting to change to APN and don’t use LTE, I did that but no luck, again battery is depleting less than 1 day.
Is anybody having that problem like me? What should I do? Is my device has issue?

This seems to be an issue on all SGS3s. I have both the LTE and international model and they both show high cell standby. Check this thread out for more info on the i9300 forums to understand why its showing so high which is actually a calculation error
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732722
My i747 is rooted so I decided to make a backup and flash the zip fix they provided and seemed to work. But the risk is inherently yours if you want to try it. Its just an xml file so I wasn't worried trying it in my case. I am more sending the link so you can see why it reports using so much battery
My cell standby battery usage went from over 50% to 5%
Basically, cell standby is not really killing your battery, it overestimates the power usage as being 10X more than what it is from my understanding

Thank you for your answer. If it is an error that is not significant I am wonder why my battery finishes less than a day?
Especially at night while I was sleeping battery drains like 20%
I actually called ATT and request a new device, they will send me the new one, so I have to wait the new device to root : )

How many here have their phone using 3g constantly, and what kind of battery life?

I bought my phone cash, thinking that if I did I wouldn't have to get the 25 dollar per month internet, but the guy who I was dealing with on the phone trying to get the basic internet working was talking smack about "Why would someone NOT want 3g on their smartphone?!"
So I ask you guys, do you leave 3g on constantly, why or why not, and if you do what kind of battery life do you get? The 10 dollar internet never worked for me, and I rarely use 3g because of battery drain, just for tethering or big files, though I seem to have wifi around half the time anyways. EDIT: Also, what are you using, stock 2.1, 2.2, or a custom rom, and if a rom which one?
Personally I think the edge service is fast enough that I haven't really cared too much, I just wouldn't mind drawing on some other opinions and thoughts. Maybe I am one of the few smartphone owners who doesn't constantly play with my phone, but if I did I would want the battery to last long enough to play with it..
Edit:
Oh, and in advance, I rarely post here so I don't know if questions like this provoke flame wars or end up through the butterfly effect making small children in india cry themselves to sleep at night.. either way, no flaming please, just curious, thought it may be interesting, and thought it would be a fun thread
I use 3g 100% of the time, battery rocks. Usually 2 days to a charge, 1 if HEAVY use. Been over a day of good use, on 3g, and still at 33.
EDGE is probly fast enough but I get antsy when I have to wait for anything so that's why I use 3g.

I have never once turned my 3g off. I average 1 day 6 hours of battery with moderate use, and have had nearly two days a few times.
Sent from my <tw> powered vibrant.
I always have my 3g on unless i'm some where where i have no signal. It's one of the key feature of the phone why turn it off?
I get any where from 15 to 25 hours depending on how heavily i use my phone.
Alot of the Vibrant community who have rooted devices and have settled into what will and wont kill your battery average between 15 hours to a full day plus. I myself see with 3g on about 15-17 hours.
Sexy Vibrant featuring Nero V3 w/Voodoo, and FFC installed
3G majority of the time (reception is what changes it to Edge) I get 12-14h battery life with "average" use (corp email set to pull every 30min reading emails ect)
Honestly, the only time I find that the network is draining the battery is when it is constantly trying to switch from "3G" to "Edge" or "Wifi" and back in bad coverage areas. If it's a reliable connection then it shouldn't really tax battery usage when idle.
About 16 hours with about 2-3 hour screen on time.. Several emails syncing plus facebook and twitter.. 100% hpsa coverage

I'm always on edge when normal usage. I really have a bad 3g reception at my place plus my vibrant have a hardware defect just like the iphone 4.

I have noticed that also, alot of my job relies on me moving through very dense facilities and around the county. I lose a significant amount (7-10% an hour driving) where at home it sits 3-6% an hour drain.
I do not have a data plan like OP.
I have Wi-Fi in 80% of the places and time my phone is on. I keep the wi-fi on auto-connect and on all the time. Moderate to heavy usage-12-18 hours battery life.
Hmm, interesting replies and statistics so far, when I was in Daytona I think that I had significant drain because the 3g coverage was spotty at best, but I haven't tried keeping it on since I moved to jacksonville, where the coverage should be much better.
Question I wish I had asked in the original post, are you stock, if so 2.1 or 2.2, or do you use a rom, and if so which one? The guys claiming over 24 hours versus people getting 17.. quite a discrepancy, and I will bet this has something to do with it(besides just amount of use).
I am using 2.2 bionix V rom, and I get 18+ hours of use out of it on my heavier use days, though I think some corrupt files on my phone have gotten my mediaserver system process using tons of processor, killing my battery quicker. I am going to go ahead and keep it on 3g for a few days, and see what kind of difference it makes. Thanks for the feedback.
Tmobile's 3g coverage in jacksonville is pretty good.Heck I get almost 4g speeds here

I'm on R10 rom and I keep the internet off if I'm not using it. Battery lasts about three times longer. Also charges up faster.

[Q]*UPDATE 17.06.2011* Battery (Its not another complain thread)!

I know there are a lot of threads already but bare with me....
A lot of users have been having issues with battery (me inlcuded). These are the following things I have personally tried:
Screen Filter
Freezing Apps in Titanium
Green Power (though I had issues with it not enabling data when screen on)
I have tried VillianRom the CF-Kernel and currently I am on stock K7 and the stock Kernel (rooted using insecure kernel then flashed stock again)(figured that might help since Samsung wouldn't actually sell a phone without testing the battery).
I am not a gamer nor have I been abusing my phone. Today scenario:
(3G/HSPDA always switched on or wifi when available)
Removed phone from charge at 1400 Hours.
Wifi was on till I left home at around 1530 hours during the process I must have barely checked a few messages on Whatsapp and made one phone call. Since then I have been out met a few friends showed off the phone. When I say showed off the phone all I did was this:
Showed the S2 playing a video
Played a song from google music (streaming over 3G)
Used whatsapp for about 10 minutes
Spoke on the phone for a total of 30 minutes
Got back home around 2200 hours and the phone was screaming for attention which I believe on stock is around 15%.
As you can see from above I have hardly used the phone. Now my query is for those users who are not having battery issues. We have had a lot of threads complaining about issues can we just have a brief post from you guys who are having fantastic battery?
Something like:
Firmware
Rom
Kernel
Root Status
Applications Installed/Frozen
Other Steps?
How much juice have you gotten out of it
I think all of this would greatly help. Coz clearly some of us are having problems and some aren't so could we just share the knowledge?
Sorry for my rambling but I wanted to explain all of it as clearly as I could. Instead of starting another thread as to WHAT CAN I DO!?
Cheers.

[UPDATE]
I read this in one of the countless threads regarding battery life and android OS eating away battery. Still in the testing phase but it seems this might be a genuine solution as well :
Format your SDCARD. I know sounds stupid but like I mentioned earlier I am still testing this out. Most of us if not all have shifted from our old android to the Galaxy S II. The probability that this might have been without a format to save pictures or some sort of data is most likely. Once again this *might* help. The title hence states update and not *FIX*.

+1 to the list man ... my battery is **** compared to others here ...
i'm currently running :
VR1.1 with some tweaks (included arabic patch from madmack)
CF-Root Kernel 3.7
froze everything samsung related (hubs, AP news, launcher, wifi sharing, ... etc)
after all this mods and stuff i barely got 21h from it with a very very light usage .. now on standby my phone dropped from 100% to 90% in almost 4 hours of nothing
hope this problem get solved with 2.3.4 update
Seriously guys 125 views and 1 reply?
What happened to all the battery boasters?

Through the day a lot of surfing and xda app. Average screen on time 2 hours.

Firmware & Rom: I don't know the difference between firmware and rom, so I'll put this: Baseband - I9100BUKE1
Kernel: OEM 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKE1-CL182896
Root Status: No
Applications Installed/Frozen: None
Other Steps? : Wifi on most of the day, 3G off unless necessary. GPS off Screen brightness: auto
How much juice have you gotten out of it: 4 hours of screen on time, or 24 hours of light use. Usually 16 hours of 3.5-4 hours of screen time.
I hope this helps. Ah not to mention, I have had this phone for 5 days now, and I haven't had ANY Samsung apps show up.
Here is an image of my list of services, but I must say, I unplugged it last night at 10 PM, and left it mostly alone until this morning. That's why my screen usage is so low. In other threads i've posted a lot higher screen on time . But it's just to show you that on KE1 there is no Samsung services going rogue.
One step forward two steps back while charging!
I had the bizarre issue last night where my S2 was losing power while it was charging. Only app running was Words with Friends (checked cpu usage and seemed ok) and I had Screen Filter running at 60%
Phone was near dead by 9pm even though I had topped it up during 2x 30min drives. Was playing Words against 4 family members (all on their iPhones) and I had to give up trying to play while huddled on the floor by the socket as it slowly dropped percent by percent lower.
Not Happy!
KE7 btw
I had a ****ty battery life too but then after reading some tips how to improve it, I froze wifi sharing in Titanium Backup and disabled Google Latitude (not sure which one did the trick but if I had to choose, I guess Latitude was the issue since Maps was always showing up in Battery usage) and now my battery life is perfect. Before my phone would die after like 8 hours and now 24 hours is no problem . I hope the new firmware will fix Latitude but until then, battery life > Latitude. I'm on VillainRom 1.1 and CF-Root 3.7 btw.
ActiveSync
I had an activesync account which really chewed on my battery, had only about 12 hours battery life. After removing the activesync account it lasts at least 40 hours!
i have mobile internet on 24/7, everything syncs every hour, if i dont touch my phone all day, it drops from 100% to 90% from 8am to 4pm....I use my phone for music most of the day for music, txting ect, easily has over 50% by end of the day...cant understand why so many people have problems!

Battery is always the problem and it will hinder the development of smartphone or other PDAs. Maybe we should get nuclear battery
Always turn 'mobile data' off when you are not using your phone. I travel a lot with work and can tell a huge difference in battery life depending on where I am. If you leave 'mobile data' on where 3G service is bad, your battery will drain fast.
Firmware - Default KE2
Baseband - I9100XXKDJ
Kernel - 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606, [email protected] #2
Other - 3G connection, no 3G packet data, no WiFi, no GPS, looking at the time from time to time, screen brightness either small or auto
I have none of the problems mentioned by others (like display banding, tint, unstable WiFi, the pink camera spot is small), if this makes a difference.
(By the way, the number within the battery compartment says i9100H)
I get about 11% battery discharge per 24 hours

Whichever way you swing it, Android battery life ain't that great... i'm coming from a Nokia phone which had 7-10 days per charge.
S2 is my first Android phone it's stock unrooted, Optus Australia version. With 100% wifi on, I get 9 1/2hrs out of box, 19-20hrs with Juice Defender free and 52hrs with XP8000

Haven't flashed it yet as phone is only 10 days old, so giving it sometime and probably wait for 2.3.4 to come out. I know KE7 is meant to give me better battery life, so may do the update or wait for 2.3.4.
My advice just get an external battery pack. My Energizer XP8000 will give me 2-5hrs extra S2 battery run time per 1hr on the charge (basically every 1hr 25-30% charged). So if you're away from home or at work, plug in XP8000 for 1hr and give the S2 a 2-5hr top up charge. But probably quicker to charge on S2 AC adaptor as USB = ~450mah and AC = ~650mah. So on AC every 1hr on charge = 40% top up on S2 battery life.
The added bonus of XP8000 is it has tips for 1000s of devices, so i can use it for my Acer 3810T notebook too which gets 10hrs itself and XP8000 can give it an extra 4 1/2hrs on top.
One thing I notice is I'm getting better battery life after each successive charge, with Juice Defender free started out around 17-19hrs, then 19-20hrs and now 23-26hrs. Been charging off XP800 @450mah for past 4 charges maybe it conditions battery batter than AC @650mah ?

A phone and a PDA (so called smartphone) are two different animals.
I forgot to say that my 3 years old HTC Polaris (with Windows Mobile 6 and a 2.8 inch LCD display) had about 12-14% battery discharge in the same conditions (but the battery was smaller, like 1300 mAh). Just for comparison for those who believe that Android is at fault.

[Q] Another battery thread whith a diffrent approach.

Im starting this thread because of every battery thread I've read people NEVER seem to solve the problem unless they replace their ATRIX. Now a few questions. This is directed to any ATRIX owner in an attempt to find a solid solution.
1. Did your ATRIX only start having battery issues after upgrading to gingerbread?ATRIX or have you had issues beginning from stock froyo?
2. Has any solution suggested by anyone ever worked for you?
3. Does your ATRIX get hot and battery drains extremely fast?
4. Are you frequently connected to 4g H+?
If you answer no. To #2 and yes to #3 I suspect it may be a hardware problem...
on the battery this is what I see and find strange and this is the battery that came with the phone.
1880mah
1880/1930
Mah(min/typ)
7.0/7.1
Wh(min/typ)
Idk where to find production number so I guessed its this [GB/T 18287]
On the phone idk the specific so I took a guess too XD [SKU:65230]
if someone knows the two above please correct me but anyways I posted those because we can compare for those that have a problem and maybe pinpoint it to be a factory defect. Again I am doing this because this battery AND heating issue is aggravating and after 2 months I can't stand it anymore no fixes ever worked so help me and those with the issue out by providing information thanks.
Hello,
1-Yes
2-Not really, I have increase the battery life but not good as the stock Froyo.
3-Yes, but as I remember it get hot too on Froyo. Less or more... I don't know.
4-Always
I have buy an Andida 2200mAh battery and use it since 3 week, I will return to the stock battery tomorrow to check if there is a difference.
1- Nope, my battery has always lasted for around 8-10 hours everyday. (I play games and browse the internet everyday).
2-Never had any battery problem so....
3-Not at all. My Atrix has always been cool.
4. for about 4-5 hours a day (usually i am on wifi but wifi or not.....i have the same battery life).
It could be a ROM problem that you are having, maybe doing a clean install of a ROM could help you(do a complete wipe before installing the ROM). Are you using faux 123's kernel? It under-clocks your Atrix to as low as 216 GHz when your handset is idle but overclocks it to 1.1 GHz when it use. You could download setcpu to under-clock it for better battery saving and this will make your phone less hot.
You can and should also download a battery app from the market and see what your battery temp is like compared to other users. If it's a hardware issue indeed, you better return your Atrix and get a new one asap as it could cause you harm in the future.

That's just it with everything stock gingerbread my friends ATRIX doesn't heat up as hot and eat through batteries like a fat guy an a dozen doughnuts in one sitting. We both had stock when I tried this his phone easily outlasts mine both on 4g and a factory reset I tested this when he asked me to root his phone I was gunna kill its bat and charge it to root and install unlock etc. And to my surprise holy sh#t his battery life WAY outlasted mine, AND HIS DEVICE IS ONE.MONTH OLDER i've had this ATRIX for 2 months now so its none of whatever everyone is saying about battery caliBS its a firm suspicion on a hardware flaw, the sooner people can find it the sooner Motorola can replace defective handsets, ridiculous, two stock gingerbread motorolas with 100% stock and mine only lasts about had as
long as my friends own who gets battery results everyone brags about.
i own 3 atrixes ive had an atrix since launch day had its issues at first but one thing that was never a problem was the battery it was always amazing lasted 2 days sometimes well since the offical ota uPdate i updated only one that way its my main phone and right away i noticed the heat coming from the metal clip holding the sd card then next i noticed the batt life was losing 10 every 20 mins or so. since i have rooted it just so i could try n use tb to freeze all the bloatware and still nothing then i tryed just bout every other method on this forum so i didnt wanna lose my warrenty on that 1 so i didnt unlock it so i took my other atrix with a slightly cracked screen it was running on 4.1.26 so i rooted it unlocked it and charged too 100 then flashed to alien v3 so wen it was done it upgraded to gb and right away i noticed the heat from it just like my other one and battery life was losing 10% every 20 mins just like my other one i have also tryed everything on this forum im lost now dnt no wat to do somebody please help also as upset i am about this happing im very relieved to c im not the only person with this issue

Battery drain under Cyanogenmod 9

Hello
I am experiencing high battery usage on my Galaxy s2, and notably since I went on CM9 a few days ago. In Idle mode, it does not seem particularly terrible (I lose c. 1%/hour, while having 3g on all the time and 4 acc. on sync/exchange). I am particularly losing under usage. During the day I lost 10% by only listening musing for less than 1 hour. Android OS is high (as much as screen). Let me know if I can conduct any particular test to understand the issue.
I have not flash Kernel, I heard flashing Siyah might help ? Is it compatible with CM 9, and which precaution should I take doing this (have never flashed Kernel before).
Thanks for your help
If anyone has an idea I need it deeply as my battery issues are worsening... I'm enclosing a snapshot of the battery page
1% per hour, 3g and sync on? Count yourself lucky man that's good!

Android 4.3 is draining my battery on standby!

Hi XDA
I literally don't know what to do with my Samsung Galaxy SIII for a bout half a year ago i updated my phone to Android 4.3 and things went a bit weird. First thing I noticed was that the phone was really slow to wake up from standby, sometimes I had to take out the battery because nothing happen. The second thing is that it sometimes get really hot even on standby. I can't make it though half a day without charging my phone! Today it got mad at my phone again and was searching around the web for a solution, I came by lot of forums with people who was dealing with the same problem, but no fix able. I found a guy who had a an app which could register the battery usage in a graph. After running the app i noticed the same as the guy from the video - my phone is pretty normal on use, but then I turn the phone on standby it goes insane (look at the picture linked below)..
I don't know how to deal with the problem. I have gone though the applist to see any remarkable apps, but nothing has cough my attention.
I hope you guy are willing to help me - Save my phone!

Wrong phone forum!!!
Here is your phone forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3
Hi, did you solved your problem?
If not, i'd recommend System Panel app. Download it, install, launch. Then go to Menu->Settings, check Enable monitoring option. Then let your phone to be in idle mode several hours - maybe before going to bed. After it - go to SP->Menu->Monitoring->History (in bottom right corner)->Press chart in top left corner->Top apps. Then you'll see top applications that worked in idle mode.
For more information go to 4pda russian forum and search "Советы по улучшению энергосбережения устройств на Android OS" thread - google translate will helps
Try This,,,,,,
I think some app is malfunctioning , i would suggest using Greenify if u r rooted ,
And if u r on Stock ROM then i would suggest u to delete or disable the BLOATWARE.

4.3 on the S3 is extremely buggy especially without Samsung's patch ( which didn't do much ). There isn't much that you can do on stock Touchwiz, except maybe flash a custom kernel. I would suggest flashing a custom rom, but that is up to you. There are many choices for custom roms here including Touchwiz, if you like it.
I've been experiencing disappointing battery life since the android 4.3 update last month on my non-LTE t-mo galaxy s3. I know there's been a lot of discussion and advice by t-mo reps on various forums, but it simply isn't accurate. The party line is "something you installed on your phone is causing increased battery drain after the 4.3 update." However, my partner and I have two identical T-mo galaxy S3's. We have entirely different sets of apps installed on our phones. As soon as we installed the 4.3 update, both of our phones started to drain rapidly faster than before the update. On 4.2 our phones would last to 50% by the end of the day (~8pm) with light to moderate use. Now they're at ~20% by the end of the day, and I can see my battery levels drop faster just while using the phone. This is totally unacceptable. I've downloaded battery monitoring apps, and no apps I've installed are draining the battery, it's the system and kernel that take up most of the cpu. People are saying it's the touchwiz additions that are causing the system to use up more cpu cycles. I refuse to do a factory reset because there's so many reports of this not doing anything. There's clearly a bug in the 4.3 update for the SG3, unless it's touchwiz as everyone seems to indicate. How can I check to see if something is causing too many wakes?
4.3 works prefect here. same battery life as with 4.0 or 4.1.
it's not the fault of 4.3.
