If you just root, nothing on your sd card will be touch, only if you unlock the bootloader will it wipe your data, want me to upload the htc driver file for you?
http://d-h.st/KA4
Here, if that has the same damage issue, then you need to have your system checked or possibly your usb cable as well.

Mr. nightmare, glad to see you, ok I want a full root on my phone, maybe oneday get custom ROMS and all that happy stuff, But inorder to FULL ROOT dont I hae to unlock my bootloader? and how can you DL it for me kind sir?

Yes you have to unlock your bootloader, before unlocking just transfer all your files on your internal sd card to the external sd card, whatever apps you have installed will be lost, so be prepared to re-install them.
I already uploaded the exe file, if that one doesn't work, then your pc or usb cable/port has a problem.
Lol at Mr. Nightmare, thanks but Dark is fine, I'm pretty sure I'm still a kid to you.

ya its still saying REPAIR or REMOVE, dont get it....Well I will hae to try it on my other CPU it should work on it, but Nightmare, If I use hasoon2000 kit in rooting my phone, will it delete my data on my SD card?
i guess my biggest concern is before ROOTING where do I put all my STUFF?

Wait, it's saying repair or remove? Then it's already installed dude! Lol wtf, a whole big fuss over nothing. Anyways, rooting via hasoon's tool doesn't touch your data, rooting in general doesn't touch your data, only when you unlock your bootloader does it delete your data, all that you want to save, transfer it to your removable sd card, it doesn't touch that.

haha im 28 and im so phone illiterate, well DARK Mostly everything on my phone can be deleted I wouldnt care, just need my Phone numbers and ringtones, so i just move my NUMBERS to SD card? then unlock bootloader... then move on with hasoons kit?

Yeah, just create a backup in the phonebook app and store it on your external sd, then yeah pretty much, go for it, don't forget to turn on USB debugging in develop options in settings or hasoons tool won't detect your device.

not sure if its new bits a rule, ok so I got as far as

Step 8
Type in Command Prompt: fastboot oem get_identifier_token.
when i go to type in MY cmd it doesnt say anything about C: Users Admins ANDROID, so i type the fastboot anyway and i says it isnt recognized

Why don't you just use hasoon's tool? It has all the files and commands pre-written.

i am using it, (not sure if Im using it right but, when I click submit token ID it pops up to HTCdev website to start on Step 8, trust me if u were down the road from me you would be making some money to root my phone, but when im in his kit and I Hit submit token it wont do anything till i click on firefox tab then it takes me to HTCdev site so yeah "duh duh duh duuh SUPER NOOB" hahaha

Follow this all the way until step 14.
http://thesuperusersguide.weebly.com/hasoon2000s-toolkit-method.html
This will guide you to do it. Even though it is for the One X, it is the exact same procedure.
When you get to step 14, run the perm root command and follow what the screen on your computer tells you.

[Q] Would a factory reset help or hurt? (botched beta 4-5)

Hey guys. These posts are all too common but I really am distressed here (I'm worried I bricked my phone and don't have technical skill to bring it back to life), and please, any help would be really appreciated.
Here's the last thing that happened before I acted stupidly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15708254&postcount=394
long story short: tried to update to new cwm but couldn't do the step to delete a file in system/etc called install-recovery
I could not find a way to delete the file I needed to delete, install-recovery, I just gave up and thought "well, whatever. I have tenfar's older CWM on my phone anyway, and I never end up NEEDING it because everything goes fine if I follow the directions (ironic thing to think when not following directions).
So I continued following kennethpenn's guide on brief mobile, doing all steps except for #2:
Prerequisites
Unlocked bootloader
CWM recovery
External SD card
Gingerbread zip (download above)
Backup PDS partition
Backup data and applications
Installation
1.Unlock your bootloader
2.Download CWM recovery and flash it
3.Mount your device to USB
4.Put the Gingerbread .zip file on your external SDcard
5.Click “install zip from sdcard”
6.Choose zip from sdcard
7.Pick the gingerbread .zip
8.Install it!
9.Reboot
Click to collapse
I was definitely rooted, and am pretty confident that I unlocked the bootloader, because it took me a long time but I followed all the steps and got all the right responses on the phone and it said (and still says) Unlocked in the upper left corner during bootup, and I learned a lot this morning and was feeling good...
Flashing went fine, until after I rebooted in the recovery menu, and.... boot loops; the M would swirl around, turn dead, come back 3 seconds later, go dead again, on and on, until I did a battery pull
One last thing that I didn't think about now but may be a huge reason for the problem: I was on 1.8.3 but deodxed and running the latest "P-ROM" Ginger Blur.
So I can get into the fastboot, stock android recovery, and like ten other options during bootup. What I want to do is just start fresh because it'll set me back a lot, but right now I just want a functional phone. So can I do a factory reset in the boot menu, or would that just permanently brick it forever considering I unlocked the boot-loader, was themed, etc etc?
Thanks - any suggestions greatly appreciated.
To all the other newbs that love this stuff, but don't really know wtf you're doing, the moral of my story is "follow the directions EXACTLY and if you're unsure that you can do that, then don't proceed.

No, no updates. After posting my question I put all my atrix stuff to the side and slipped my sim card into one of those ugly Nokia bar phones everyone had in the late '90s - early '00s. I was so frustrated that I had to walk away from it for a while.
Thanks for the offer mramirezusa, if you or anyone else could please give me some help, I'd really really appreciate it

I can't wait to have my phone again! It's only been two days but there have been so many times I needed to use it, I never realized how dependent I am on my phone. It's going to be so great, like when you go to a bad camp for summer, and you're hot and covered in bugs the whole time, and when you finally ge back home to all the creature comforts, like air conditioning, TV, computers, video games, microwaves, etc, and you feel like "this is absolutely amazing!!" and appreciate everything anew
Ok last part:
download and unzip in a new folder the file in the following link:

6. Phone ready in fastboot
7. Run repair.bat
8. Press on each step "any key to continue" until the phone reboot

Have u set up Adb on your computer? All the temp root methods I have used require adb. If u have then i would suggest in a terminal moving to the directory you have it set up in and type "adb devices" and see if you get a serial #. If u don't know what Adb is then the unlocker has a great tutorial just Google it.

1. Go to Settings/Application/development menu and make sure that USB debugging is checked
2. Open Notification screen by swipe down from the top of the screen, you should see USB connection. Choose that and make sure choose "Charge Only" and click OK
3. Download Superuser from Market and install it on your phone.
4. go to Settings/Display/Screen Timeout and choose never
5. Download drivers, ADB packages, Root files from the link below and extract them to your C drive under Root directory (C:\Root). Then just follow the direction of the link below to root your phone.
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-root-motorola-photon-4g
If you follow the direction correctly, If i remember correctly at the last step your phone Superuser application should popup and ask you to allow the root process to access root. Click OK then you are root

Please help! Cant' boot ANY ROM (SOLVED)

Okay, so I am far from a newbie at this stuff, but I did try to unlock/root my new EVO 4G LTE today with disastrous results. As it stands right now, I've got the bootloader unlocked with TWRP installed, but no matter what ROM I install, after the HTC screen, it just sits at a black screen indefinitely. But here's where I really got screwed: I accidentally hit "Factory Reset" on the bootloader screen when I hit the volume down twice instead of once to get into recovery (and then hit power by force of habit). So now my internal SD card is completely empty and can't be recognized by my computer. I do have a MicroSD card, though, that I can access to get files onto it. So here's where I am. I can't boot into ANY ROM, so I can't just RUU it back to stock, my internal SD card is cleared, and I'm pretty much freaking out right now. This is my 8th Android device, all of which I rooted and installed custom ROMs on, and I've never bricked it so bad I couldn't fix it. Does anyone have any ideas to help me out? I royally effed up somewhere, and I can't figure out how to fix it!
SOLVED! Check out the DON'T PANIC thread to fix pretty much any of your problems, especially the one I outlined above.
Boot 1.15+ require you to fast boot the kernel, extract boot.image from zip and place in adb directory, then from terminal type fastboot flash boot boot.image. next jump into twrp and mount your external SD to your computer, copy the ROM zip to your phone. Now you can flash the ROM and reboot

Yes HTC has disabled access to boot. They decided to disable it with a few phones, someone must love us over there because this phone originally had an hboot that allowed recovery to write to boot. HTC promptly removed it in the very next update
I put that link up to humor the gf, never thought anyone would use it. She set up a PayPal when I lost my job and I wasn't about to argue since she is now the one who pays rent. Thank you for proving her right, I will never hear the end of it lol

ok i found the zip and downloaded it.I have my phone in recovery FASBOOT USB is in red, BOOTLOADER is in blue.I have the boot image of the rom i tried to flash on my cpu.I'm so lost if I fix this I think I'll retire.
Im assuming your in windows. Place the boot.img in the adb folder. Click windows start button and type cmd in run, this will open dos prompt terminal. In the terminal use the command CD (folder) to go to what ever directory adb tools is in if you need to look at your list of folders type dir. Once you are in your adb folder type fastboot flash boot boot.img

Odd, are you sure you were able to navigate to the folder? You have to be in the folder
I'm a bit out of practice when it comes to windows, but I believe the structure would be c:\users\your user id\downloads\evo4glteroot2 or something similar depending on where you unzipped the folder

MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you saved me! This has to be done with each rom? My phone screen blacks out with this CyanogenMod 10. Is there a more stable rom or can i go back to stock?
Can you explain black out? You only have to flash the kernel when switching base ROMs or when the kernel for your ROM has any significant changes. Its usually a good idea to flash the kernel anyway. I got a ton of info in my guide, the link is in my sig

[Q] Newb With Rooting Questions

Hey guys I just joined the site a few days ago after being sent here by some guys from some Audio forums, which is my main hobby. I guess you could say Im kind of a techy but am just now getting in to laptop building and things like that so I am still a newb. Anyways I just got the HTC DNA which I like quite a bit but Id like a little more out of it such as little better battery life, more customization, and to get rid of the bloat ware installed. On that note however I have never done anything much with phones since this is my first Droid after using Iphones which is why Im starting this thread...
I have been reading around and am still quite lost as to what I need to do to get what I wanted (battery life, customization, and to get rid of bloatware). I really like the ViperDNA ROM after watching the video but not sure if....
1. It will do what I want?
2. How to install it/make it run properly?
3. If there is something better?
So if you guys could walk me through what it takes to run something like that I would greatly appreciate you helping out some one new to this whole "Rooting" thing since this is my first Droid... If I can return the favor by helping out with your Car audio or talking guns with anyone Id be glad to!

I love the ViperRom! It has every customization imaginable and is very professional looking. It helps with battery life but you can use pretty much any kernel you want with a rom and that probably has as much or more affect on battery life. You need to be rooted and have adb installed on your pc - are you to this point yet?
Here is a good link by droidmodd3rx that walks through most things on video. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012346
Also did you accept Verizon ota update in the last week? If so I am not sure you can root yet, they will have to work out a new method for that.

This is my second Droid phone, but I am interested in rooting this beast (HTC DNA). But I think I might temporarily be out of luck as my Software Number is 2.04.605.2 71 ORD.
I'll sit tight if this is true, but once there is a rooting option for this update can someone PLEASE, please, please post a V-E-R-Y detailed and simplified method for rooting?
I have to do whatever it take to get rid of "DROOOIIIDDD" on start up. Seroiously, that is my primary reason for looking into this rooting business. I'm such a sad case
Cheers!
It looks like its quite the long process if you don't have SDK and ADP already installed which you will need to unlock the bootloader...

Here is page for new easy way to unlock bootloader

And here is page with video guides to Root, install custom recovery and install kernels and Roms.

You also need to install usb drivers on your pc. If you have't already done so you can get them here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000896
It seems overwhelming but it really isn't if you read/watch things carefully and follow instructions it is pretty easy and fun.

depending on what you named your directories are you going to the platform-tools directory? you need to type adb not adp, lower case not caps, and then there needs to be a command after adb. Try adb devices.

Ya thats what I meant just wasnt paying attention last night
Well I got it unlocked finally but now when I go to flash the Recovery I just get an error... Sometimes the "emulator" one, "waiting on the device" , Or just cant the find file... Just doing it straight from the comand I open in the file or using Hansoon2000's tool...
Quick question
Hey, going to do a little thread jacking here. It seems like this would be the best place to ask my question. I'm a long-time iOS user that just switched and silly me accepted the OTA 2.04.605 update. Now, if I performed a hard reset wouldn't that put my software back to its factory settings and would allow me to unlock my bootloader? Sorry if this annoying just trying to make sure it'll work before I go through the hassle of restoring. Thanks for any help!

Your phone needs to be in fastboot for you to find it. Connect the phone, boot into the bootloader, enter fastboot, open a new command prompt, and try "fastboot devices". you should see the phone.
If you can't find the file then you're not in the right directory. Make sure you navigate to the folder that contains the file then run the command. (or you can just give it the full path to the file)

No, I don't think that'll help. The factory reset basically wipes memory and restores the original ROM. The OTA updates the radios / kernel. But don't quote me on that. I'll let a dev who knows better comment.

I think you are right because I have not heard of anyone suggesting this, and it was just my noob idea! Thanks for the help.

This question has been answered, but I thought I'd provide a little more detail to their answers:
On android, the memory is divided into several partitions (you might think of it like different disk drives), including a /boot, /system, and /data partition. The /boot partition is where the kernel (the heart of the android o/s) resides; the /system (where the bulk of the android o/s resides); the /data is where your apps and personal data reside. The /boot and /system partitions require system administrator level rights in order to change the information stored there (the system administrator account on android/linux is known as "root" or "superuser").
The update that came from VZW changed elements in the /system and /boot directories, using a superuser key to grant the update permission to change the files on those partitions.
Unfortunately, a factory reset only essentially re-formats the /data partition, wiping out all the user information stored there, but doesn't change the /system or /boot partitions.
The root process essentially hacks the device to gain system administrator rights to the android phone, using exploits in the android o/s. This is essentially a cat and mouse game. The update sent by VZW/HTC patches the exploits that were used to gain root access (that is why it is always dangerous to accept updates from VZW/HTC).
Hopefully the developers on this website will be able to find another exploit/weakness, and provide a way for those who have phones that have the update to obtain root, unlock the bootloader (another partition), and gain s-off (another level of turning a security flag to "off" so that even more partitions can be accessed/changed (ie.the /radio partition).
