Okay, so I am far from a newbie at this stuff, but I did try to unlock/root my new EVO 4G LTE today with disastrous results. As it stands right now, I've got the bootloader unlocked with TWRP installed, but no matter what ROM I install, after the HTC screen, it just sits at a black screen indefinitely. But here's where I really got screwed: I accidentally hit "Factory Reset" on the bootloader screen when I hit the volume down twice instead of once to get into recovery (and then hit power by force of habit). So now my internal SD card is completely empty and can't be recognized by my computer. I do have a MicroSD card, though, that I can access to get files onto it. So here's where I am. I can't boot into ANY ROM, so I can't just RUU it back to stock, my internal SD card is cleared, and I'm pretty much freaking out right now. This is my 8th Android device, all of which I rooted and installed custom ROMs on, and I've never bricked it so bad I couldn't fix it. Does anyone have any ideas to help me out? I royally effed up somewhere, and I can't figure out how to fix it!
SOLVED! Check out the DON'T PANIC thread to fix pretty much any of your problems, especially the one I outlined above.
Boot 1.15+ require you to fast boot the kernel, extract boot.image from zip and place in adb directory, then from terminal type fastboot flash boot boot.image. next jump into twrp and mount your external SD to your computer, copy the ROM zip to your phone. Now you can flash the ROM and reboot

So extract the the boot.img from the ROM zip and then ADB it to the phone through fastboot?
Yes, its pretty simple. Take a look at my guide I break down everything I can possibly think if and I update it like a mad man....maybe Bilbo is right about it being stickied...oh well

Oh my god. You are a God among men. It's finally booting! Thank you SO much. Watch for a donation. I can't thank you enough. I'm assuming that extra step is because of S-ON?
I just sent you a $20 donation for your help. You saved my ass tonight. The wife was ready to kill me. lol
Yes HTC has disabled access to boot. They decided to disable it with a few phones, someone must love us over there because this phone originally had an hboot that allowed recovery to write to boot. HTC promptly removed it in the very next update
I put that link up to humor the gf, never thought anyone would use it. She set up a PayPal when I lost my job and I wasn't about to argue since she is now the one who pays rent. Thank you for proving her right, I will never hear the end of it lol

$20 is a drop in the bucket of the hell I'd have had to pay with the wife if I couldn't get it fixed. That's money well-spent, in my eyes. You really did save me last night, and though you probably thought it was a stupid mistake I made, you earned it. Thanks so much again. And, um, sorry about proving her right. Hopefully you're proved right by others too.
this is my exact problem.can this be explained with noob bumpers please?
Did you fastboot your kernel?
You need the adb tools package to use fastboot. I would post a link but I'm not at my pc, do a search for evo4glteroot2.zip

ok i found the zip and downloaded it.I have my phone in recovery FASBOOT USB is in red, BOOTLOADER is in blue.I have the boot image of the rom i tried to flash on my cpu.I'm so lost if I fix this I think I'll retire.
Im assuming your in windows. Place the boot.img in the adb folder. Click windows start button and type cmd in run, this will open dos prompt terminal. In the terminal use the command CD (folder) to go to what ever directory adb tools is in if you need to look at your list of folders type dir. Once you are in your adb folder type fastboot flash boot boot.img

I'm a bit out of practice when it comes to windows, but I believe the structure would be c:\users\your user id\downloads\evo4glteroot2 or something similar depending on where you unzipped the folder

MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you saved me! This has to be done with each rom? My phone screen blacks out with this CyanogenMod 10. Is there a more stable rom or can i go back to stock?
Can you explain black out? You only have to flash the kernel when switching base ROMs or when the kernel for your ROM has any significant changes. Its usually a good idea to flash the kernel anyway. I got a ton of info in my guide, the link is in my sig

No clue on why the installation keeps getting aborted.
Try this.
Use the kernel flasher tool to flash your original boot.img file (from your custom rom).
Then adb reboot recovery to get back into recovery and flash your previous rom.
That should take care of it.
i cant get the computer to recognize device, when i tried to flash the original kernel it just keeps waiting for device

Get into hboot mode.
take the boot.img file and place inside the Kernel flasher folder. Make sure fastboot.exe is in there.
Open command prompt (Run as administrator)
cd to the directory with fastboot.exe and boot.img
enter:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
You should be good.
im not sure what you mean, i come from black berry lol. How do i cd to "said" directory? Sorry took a break it was stressing me out, i appreciate the input alot though. Am i looking to install this on my phone or on my computer, is there anything i can do to give you more info? my computer doesnt recognize the device, i cant get past hboot, i can get to clockwork, sometimes but im not sure what to do all the stuff ive researched to do doesnt work.
Edit. So are you saying put the boot img and fast boot in the kernelhere folder, or the folder preceding that? think my batteries dead now, im really hooped. in my command prompt when i run as admisnstrator i get this command line "C:\Windows\system32>" how do i navigate to where you were saying?
Edit: ok i figured out how to navigate around command prompt but now i think my bettery is to dead, i cant get to hbooot, grrr, this sucks. hopefully itll charge over night enough to do this.

Just trying to make it easy for you man.
Re-download your original rom.
Extract the boot.img file to the exact same location as the fastboot.exe file.
Use the command prompt to navigate to the directory where you have the boot.img and fastboot.exe file.
Boot to hboot.
In the command prompt enter this command
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Then reboot to recovery.
From recovery flash your rom .zip file.
If your battery is completely drained then try charging it for a few hours. If it doesn't charge then try something like this:

or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336005
Or you can look on Amazon for an Anker battery and charger. Best investment for the Amaze that I've ever made.
Worse case scenario, go to T-Mobile and tell them that your battery is shot and need a replacement. Or send me a pm and I'll see some other ways that I can help you out. Maybe I'll let you mail me your device and I can fix it for you. Very last resort of course.
EDIT
I just noticed that you have a Canadian ip address. Do you have Telus? If so then remember to use xboarders56's telus patch too after you have flashed your rom.
Just for the hell of it... try using this rom and the boot.img file from it as well (assuming you do have Telus)

Yes, use the telus rom that you had before.
Within that telus rom should be a boot.img file.
That one is the one that you want to fastboot flash.

Okay if you can get into recovery then just flash a Telus rom.
If you already did the fastboot boot boot.img command then it should boot up just fine.
Yep it did, i had my phone working before i left to work, i thought i already posted this. Thanks again for all your help, without you my girlfriend would still be mad at me hahaha, and id have no phone to escape to. Love the support here you guys all rock.
Go easy on me guys I tried looking for the answers for the last 3-4 hours. ;/
I already rooted my phone using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310115
and unlocked the bootloaded as well using the htcdev website.
And I would like to install beastmod. I went through the faq and the whole bit but still have questions and still a tad bit confused. I even went online to google and search the forum.
I know this is the official thread for beast mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313017?referrerid=922386
I have unlocked the boot loader, do I need to flash the kernel still? This is where I am confuse.
I read the
"FAQ for the HTC Amaze 4G. Read Frequently Asked Questions before you post a question!"
and
"HTC AMAZE ROM Bible - Everything you need to know"
I'm coming from a Blackberry which I used for almost 6 years.
I'm just kinda stumped right now as far as steps I need to take if any prior to installing Beastmod. I have never installed a rom before but I figure I ask the questions above before attempting anything.
Forgive me if i'm wrong everyone, but i think the Kernel is already cooked into the ROM. So no need for flashing a kernel after flashing the ROM.
I too am new to the HTC Amaze. I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 and was also running BeastMod v4.0. And God is this a pain in the butt to root. Last HTC phone i had was a HTC TouchPro. WinMo6 ftl
Really? What made you go to the Amaze? I came in T Mobile store thinking I was going to walk out with the S2 but after 3 days I ended up leaving with the Amaze, just seemed like a better phone.
Have you installed beastmod on your phone going?
Oh i still have my SGS2, just got really bored with it dev wise. Too many Roms with pretty much the same things. BeastMod was really the only ROM that stood out. Just got my Amaze last night, so i haven't even been able to try to root it yet. I've been reading alot of tutorials, and it sounds fairly easy....just alot of steps than what i'm used to. But so far, i'm really liking the Amaze over the SGS2. Sense and the camera are a WIN!
As far as I can tell from reading the official BeastMod first post you do need to flash the kernel.
That message below is right in the change log.
"**FULL WIPE REQUIRED FOR v2.2.0 and Kernel Flash**
YES!
You must flash the Kernal with Kernal Flasher
We do not have S-off... Security Off
So Kernals can not be buried in the rom they have to be seperate. We do not anticipate S-off any time soon. Since bootoader is unlocked we can use ADB to push the kernal. VIOLA! for us mere mortals the mighty DEV have created a tool that does it for us!
I just want to help. I find it hard to believe you did not see this in like every Xboarder ROM thread there is! Follow instructions on front page of the ROMs. They are explicit.
Feel free to PM if you have issues though. Amaze is my first Android phone and I cut my teeth with it so I should be a good resource. Cheers
I still do not see that thread, I just looked. I;ve spent a few hours on this but still determined to do it.

Alright so fact, need to flash kernel 1st.
Alright I found this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328141
Which I assume its the correct one.
I am confused at number 4,
4. Place the boot.img that you want to be flashed in the Kernel-Here folder.
Which boot.img? The one thats included in beastmod?
and 5
5. Make sure adb is enabled on your phone via settings
adb?
You always flash the ROM first then the Kernel.

I don't know what you mean by that could you be more specific please?
Do you see on the BeastMod thread where you downloaded the ROM?
Underneath it, it says "Kernel for 2.2.0" that is the boot.img download it.
As for ADB under settings this is just referring to "USB debugging" turned on.
Put the boot.img in the "Kernel Here" folder which is in the "Kernal Flash Tool v3".
Then after run the flash.bat (windows) or flash.sh(mac) file in that tool folder.
That should do it.

And where are you still having problems?
That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure that what I needed to do, I was semi sure but I do not want to brick my phone by doing a step I was not suppose to.
ADB is a confusing term debugging makes a lot more sense and that is what I figured but I did not see any reference between adb and debugging mode.
So after following these steps, this will install beastmod?
I saved my contacts, sms, and call logs using a program called supa back up, they were saved on my sd card.
Anything else I need to know?
And thank yo for taking the time to fill in the gaps I really do appreciate and hopefully this thread will help anyone else that was confused as I was.
UPDATE
Does the phone need to be in any specific mode? I have it as Disk Drive and after running the bat I get a msg saying error device not found" and "waiting for device"

The boot.img is the kernel. Flashing it doesn't mean you have BeastMod.
You need to download BeastMod and flash it through recovery to get BeastMod on your phone.
Remember to wipe data, wipe dalvik and wipe cache.
After you flash the ROM then you flash the kernel using the tool.
Sometimes the kernel needs to flashed twice to fix any issues you might have after flashing a ROM and new kernel.
First boot takes longer and after first boot, once the phone settles, reboot again.
Your phone needs to be in "charge only" and not "disk drive" for ADB to recognize it.
do not worry about bricking your phone, you actually cant since there is no s-off yet + htc hasnt released much of the sources so pretty much ur phone is locked and cant brick it.
OK I did the flash.bat, phone restarted.
So in order to install the beastmod, do I copy the beastmod file I downloaded into the sdcard? Then reboot and install it through recover?
How do I wipe the data?

Yes. Copy the zip you downloaded on to your sdcard then reboot into recovery.
Volume down + power.
Once in recovery you should have options.
First do a backup.
Then look for the options to wipe data/factory reset.
Then usually wipe cache and wipe dalvik are under the "advanced" option.
I do believe you have a custom recovery so your options might be different.
Navigate around to find the options to wipe all your data.
After you wipe then you navigate to "apply update from sdcard" and then "choose zip from sdcard" select BeastMod and flash it.
You should be ready to go.
Sorry my instructions aren't specific as I haven't rooted my Amaze or flashed a custom ROM.
So I don't know what your recovery looks like.
I am going off my experience with 7 MT4Gs and 2 Sensations.
The steps should be pretty basic when flashing a ROM anyway.
I understand that for someone who is new at this reading the instructions might seem complicated at times.
I'm just trying my best to reword those instructions for you and put it steps you can understand.
Alright, final question, do I need to make a folder for the files that in the zip folder or do I just copy them to the sdcard2 directory as the way its shown when you un zip the beastmod.zip file?

Don't unzip it. Just place the entire thing on your sdcard.
If you're flashing the ROM through recovery you should not need to unzip it.
It's just placing it on your SDcard and flashing it.
ooooh
I will try it right now then.
OK
Off topic question, Cynogen is a mod like Beastmod correct?
UPDATE
Alright its been flashed yay it works lol. Do I need to flash the kernel again? I did it before, do i have to do it afterwards as well, you mention that earlier.
Boy it looks so different...... so the Sense theme is still there but just hidden in some sort of way? Will they ever disable the security on this phone or is that permanent?
Dude if the admin are smart they will PIN this thread. I am a computer guy I fix them for a living mod the etc and damm this was a pain in the ass. The information is there but its missing certain details and its scattered, I searched around and sort of has the jist of it but honestly they should make a faq on how to more or less how its detailed in this thread, would save a lot of time and effort.

http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/HTCEvo4GLTE/rooting/Evo4GLTERoot2.zip its labeled as evo4glteroot but its basically abd tools mini sdk to use it you need to open a terminal (dos prompt) and navigate to that folder to to use fastboot, when you flash a kernel unzip the ROM and put the boot image in the folder and type fastboot flash boot boot.img, check my guide for an explanation of flash image GUI and htc dumlock, alternative methods for flashing the kernel

lmao odd but yeah i finally got my phone up and running thanks so much man for all your help wish i had some cash for you i get paid Friday expect a donation
The title says it all. My M8 has the bootloader unlocked, it's S-off and rooted with Teamwin recovery installed. I started dicking around with it, and messed it up. I went to HBOOT and factory reset. I now have no OS, so obviously, my phone won't start up. I appear to be really stuck. If you guys help me and talk me through this, I'll stop dicking around. :-/
Also, I would like to load my stock bootloader, 1.12.502.18 (CID CWS__001). I've found the kernel source code as well as a 1.3 GB file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376 that supposedly houses this Nandroid backup, but I have no idea how to use it. God, I feel stupid.
Ok. I got the Nandroid backup recovery.emmc.win file pushed to the phone. Now, I have a red triangle in the middle of the screen and I can't get to recovery or fastboot.
Flash twrpCopy the rom to where your adb and fastboot are located connect phone via twrp run this command
adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/. exactly as shown here change nameofrom.zip to the name of the rom your trying to flash...this will put a rom on your internal storage and it then can be flashed via twrp

I was able to get into TWRP just fine. When I pushed the file, it moved the file, but I can no longer get to TWRP. So the ROM is there, I just can't access it. Thoughts?
Ok, I got Recovery going. I'm now in TWRP. Where did adb stick the file I pushed?
take out sdcard if using one and only use internal storage..Have to push a flashable rom zip not nand backup.once is pushed it should take awhile, youll go to install like any other custom rom from the install menu. Or if you cant get that going use adb sideload command
Make sure command is correct
adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/.
Dumb question. Where in the world do I find the stock recovery zip? I can't find any zip...only img, etc.
You dont need stock recovery right now follow instructions to get a rom back on the device first...download any custom rom and follow what i said

Thanks for the help. Downloading your ROM now.
If you can get in recovery choose the option "adb sideload" put the ROM on your desktop and name it rom. Then in a command window type adb sideload rom.zip , TWRP will automatically recognize the update script and flash it for you.

I don't think he was asking that. I am pretty sure he was asking where he managed to find the stock recovery, which is why the red exclamation, probably because he didn't pull or nand the recovery as a raw or img file before flashing something custom (the user that asked, that is).
I doubt is is a stock AT&T ship recovery from an RUU dump or ota, since there haven't been any for AT&T that I know of yet, so it's likely just a raw dump or was part of the nand backup he restored.
Already been sorted thank you fot you insight

I would like to know how to upgrade to a new ROM (Lollipop or better) on my Verizon HTC One Max with the option to return to stock. Software Information: 4.4.2, Sense 6.0, 3.09.605.3, 6.20, 4.60_002, 15432, 5
I was told to use (and did) Sunshine and then downloaded SuperSU from Google Store (per very detailed instructions and was told to not choose TWRP when the question popped up to choose one or the other (common/normal?)).
My phone is now UNLOCK and S-OFF as well as Rooted (but I'm having a lot of problems with blank screens, etc. and even had the black screen with the red ! in a red triangle (and I don’t know how I got it to boot up again (pushed pwr buttons, vol +/-, etc.)). However, that is as far as I’ve gotten. Confused am I.
I don’t know how to flash; however, I’ve been trying to figure it out, but I’m lost.
I’ve downloaded a lot of files from other threads, but the instructions, while detailed, didn’t say HOW to flash or add TWRP where I (a NEWBORN NEWBIE/NOOBIE) could understand, etc. Is there a place where all this is together?
Am I out of luck or would someone PLEASE help me fix and upgrade it with the option to return to stock if needed? I would love to have Sense 7.0, if possible. I apologize for such a long post/thread.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!!
P. S. My phone is now Prepaid Verizon (was Postpaid). Don't know if that matters. I have pics of the files I downloaded from one of your great guys, but they are on my computer. Not sure how to upload. I AM GLAD THAT I FOUND YOUR SITE!!!!!
@LoveSpock I am going to make this short and simple...
First off the Verizon Max software only goes up to 4.4.2. If you want to upgrade you'll need a custom rom which is why you S-OFF and unlocked...
You will need to get familiar with fastboot commands. Google is your friend on how to use if you don't know how to. Here is the link to the TWRP image for your device. http://flyhalf205.com/recoveries/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.7.1-t6univ.img Once you get fastboot setup you will type in the command fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.7.1-t6univ.img Make sure you have everything in the same directory when executing the command.
From there you are free to wipe then flash anything you would like. Wiping will delete your data so text, contacts that are stored on local phone(not sim or google) will be deleted.
@Flyhalf205
Thank you for your response and instructions. Does this mean I don't need to do anything to the SUPERSU that is already on the phone (and what it did)?.... Following your instructions will wipe everything?
I'll definitely need to take out my sd card. I've saved a ton of stuff on it. ...and backup my contacts and text messages.
I have some more googling and try to learn what you wrote for me to learn. I'll also have to find out what ROM to use....
Your Padawan thanks you.

Shouldn't worry about supersu. Most custom ROMs are going to have that prebuilt into it. Once you get TWRP we will go further into detail about how stuff works.
If you use twrp no need to take your SD card out just go to setting and unchecked SD card and like lovespoke said make sure to dl the right file you can dl right fastboot files here on xda just search it
Hey! Don't mean to hijack the thread but I'm in the same boat. I've never rooted and I'm looking to root my Verizon HTC one max. I'd also like to maybe install a custom Rom but I'm a noob so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing. Ok so it's my understanding that sunshine will root, s-off, AND unlock my boot loader? Btw I have no idea what those terms mean. Anyway, if someone could please confirm that about sunshine, it would really help me out. I've already downloaded and installed sunshine on my phone but I haven't paid the $25 yet.
Xx Moe, I strongly suggest you READ the various threads on XDA about unlocking bootloaders, gaining S-OFF and rooting. You can easily brick a device and there's much less support for the Max now than there was when it came out more than two years ago.
I don't believe Verizon HTC One Max's can be rooted without unlocking bootloader/gaining S-OFF and the exclusive method for that is Sunshine (unless you know someone with a Java card). Once you're bootloader unlocked and S-OFF, you can then "flash" any partition on the device and that's how to brick the device.
Once you are bootloader unlocked and S-OFF, you start by flashing a 'recovery', which is usually the latest version of TWRP for the HTC One Max. Don't flash a recovery for a different device. (Google "Team Win Recovery Project"). Once you have a custom recovery you can "wipe" your device and flash a new ROM.
Wiping deletes all data, or some data, depending upon how you wipe, and there are not very many Verizon HTC One Max ROMs out there that are fully functional. Check the threads, one sticky thread has a listing of ROMs.
Finally, I don't believe anyone has gotten Marshmallow going on a Max, so expect the "best" you'll be able to do is a Lollipop ROM or a Cyanogen Mod equivalent.
Awesome! Thanks for the super quick reply. So yes, sunshine will s-off and unlock boot loader. That seemed to be the million dollar question since (like you said) the one max doesn't have very much support anymore. I'm definitely going to keep reading the forums because I don't want to brick my phone. I've also been watching some tutorials on YouTube. Everything (so far) seems pretty straight forward now, but you can never be too careful. Thanks for your help hgoldner!

I'm trying to install a custom rom on my htc one max but this is my first time ever rooting/unlocking an android. Ive searched the site but i cant find a tutorial on how to install the custom recovery or learn about adb yet. I have sunshine already on my phone but i havent used it yet because i want to know exactly what im doing before i pay the $25. Any help is appreciated. I already know how to get into the bootloader by pressing the power and volume down buttom at the same time while the phone is turned off.

Download the platform tools and the android usb driver. Don't need anything else.
But basically if your s-off yet. Boot into HBOOT. Power off phone and hold down both power button and the volume down button. Select fastboot using the power button. Your computer should hopefully automatically pick up drivers and call the device "My HTC" in the device manager. If not you'll need to go in and manually assign the downloaded driver using the link above to the Android device in device manager.
Download twrp image file into the same directory as the platform tools downloaded to. In windows, right click while holding down shift anywhere on the white blank area in platform tools and click on "open command window here".. From there you will type in the command fastboot flash recovery recoveryFileName.img
If it says waiting for device. Check device manager and make sure the driver is installed right.

I forget if you were s-off or s-on but you will need to be s-off or your bootloader will need to be unlocked.. You don't need a rom just yet. You could flash recovery and flash root for starters. But once you get it flashed we can start on what to do next.

Sorry... I started the thread back in January. I've been out of commission and starting over.
I had used Sunshine to S-off and Unlock. I used SU to root. I knew nothing about flashing or fastboot and am still learning. One of your original responses to my original post said that google was my friend, so I googled per your advice and found some information on fastboot.
I don't know what flash root means in your response above.
You had also gave me the link to the TWRP image for my phone. You also wrote "Make sure you have everything in the same directory when executing the command." I've added 2 of the pics again as well as one of your img file in the directory I created when I loaded Android Studio.
The Android Studio I downloaded is the latest. Does that make a difference? I did find info on this site about a minimal adb and fastboot. Would that have been better?
I'm imagining my phone will be out of commission until the new ROM is installed, right? (See how I'm still such a Newbie/Noobie!)
Thank you!
Your Padawan
