Just need help getting up and running. - HTC EVO 3D

Was trying to get my buddy rommed up on his evo 3d and I did not do enough research and made a mistake, hopefully somebody here can PLEASE help me out.
The HTC bootloader unlock process told me to update to 2.17 before unlocking the bootloader and without doing my research I did so, which obviously update me to hboot 1.5. I have twrp on the phone and tried to install a custom rom which obviously did not boot. I then read up on why that would be so, and now am simply trying to get his phone up and running, even if it were to be the stock rom.
What can I do to get this to work?
I tried flashing the 2.17 RUU and got security failed. Is there a certain rom version that I should be able to install, or what can I do to simply get his phone back up and running?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys!

For the Thu to work you first need to relock your boot loader by using the command.
fastboot oem lock
Then run the ruu and you should be good.

If your s-on you should consider using ext4 recovery. It allows you to flash custom roms without the need to flash the kernel/boot img separately.
You can use this

Please Help... stumped..

MOVING FROM GENERAL
Hi Guys,
I need some help as I cant figure it out..
I am getting an endless booting loop at the htc screen on EVO 3D.. I have Kaama lightweight Kernal loaded 0.7 and flashed the Crypt0s RUU V1.4...it seems any ROM i try now i am getting this and just stays in an endless boot....
Using Recovery cwm-4.0.1.4 Shooteru
Bootloader is unlocked S-ON
HBOOT 1.49.0012
I am stumped now...
GSM EVO 3D?
Its good practice to flash the rom, boot up and let it sync, then go back to recovery and flash the kernel.
Are you able to get to Recovery?
yes i can still get into recovery.. that part is fine, so i am assuming this "can" be fixed somehow....its just beyond me now...
yes it is GSM AUstralian version running on Telstra..
If you are s-on something is wrong with that bpptloader you should be s-off. When you are s-on the kernels will not flash properly. You may be able to flash the rom through fastboot and get the kernel to stick. Search for Joeykrm's guide, I also think there are instructions on synergy or eternity post #2 for the s-on. I'd personally rerun Revolutionary and see if you can't get to s-off first though.
looking around I cant get s-off yet ob Hboot 1.49.0012..
I used the HTC method to unlock the phone....is S-OFF needed?
could I flash to a stock kernal to fix it?
Do ruu

S-OFF is not *needed* but it is preferred. HTC's unlock method forces you to take a few extra inconvenient steps (imagine that!).
In order to flash a kernel on an EVO 3D with s-on and HTC unlock, there are basically two ways which insure all the proper kernel and accompanying module files are loaded correctly:
1) From normal android, use my Flash Image GUI application. This will load the kernel properly.
2) From fastboot, use this command to load a temporary version of the recovery under fastboot mode: fastboot boot C:\downloads\cwm-recovery.img
Hope that helps clarify!
Joey has it right, I thought all of the HTC methods ended up being hboot 1.50. Sorry about that. Still all you need to do is the extra step to flash and all will be good. Doesn't really hurt anything but just an annoyance.

[Q] Updating to 2.17.651 hboot 1.5

So to update firmware first fastboot oem lock and then flash the newest RUU then unlock again. Is this correct?
Exactly

Or you can flash a stock recovery without relocking/flashing RUU and take the update if you are on stock ROM.
Why does everyone think you have to rearm your bootloader for updates?
Remember we have an unlocked bootloader which is signed by HTC you don't need to relock for anything, the signatures contained in it are valid
The only thing you have to make sure to receive the ota is to be fully stock, doesn't matter if rooted or not, and that you have stock recovery and all the bloatware that came with the phone, otherwise the update will fail.
Note : if your rooted you will loose root after the update.

IF you are 1.5 S-OFF then its business as usual. Flash the ROM from custom recovery like traditionally you would and you should be good.
Most of us have Hboot 1.5 S-ON, this method involves flashing the Kernel first (however you want to flash: fastboot or Flash GUI) and then flashing the ROM via custom recovery.
im sorry i mistyped, im s-on, and i do know how to flash roms i was wondering the proper steps to update to the newest firmware. i have read many instructions about it but im a moron and got confused along the way
again thanks

Extract the recovery.img file from a RUU/ROM.zip file.
And then fastboot flash recovery recovery.img or rename it to PG86IMG.ZIP and run it like an ruu?
If that's the case, can you just run the last Sprint ruu then do update? Or will the ruu not overwrite recovery and kernel? Trying to figure this out to without messing up the phone. I am also running with 1.5 s-on.

PLEASE HELP!!! wifi/4g/camera problems!

u have hboot 1.50?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
yes i do. is that the problem?
You need to boot inrecovery with ADB or use GUI app otherwise you wont br able to have wifi and 4g working
Sent from my HTC.EVO.3D.Xda Premium
The problem is that with hboot 1.5 your not nand unlocked (s-off) so you can't flash kernels without taking extra steps, like booting into recovery with adb or using Flash Image GUI app by joeykrim. You can find it in the market. Here is a link to help u out.

See the [Guide]My Hboot 1.50 HTC Unlock/recovery/rom/kernel flashing notes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495358
Assuming you are HTC Unlocked and have a Custom Recovery Installed already, pay particular attention to:
Post 3. My Hboot 1.50 Rom/Kernel Flashing Notes: (Scenarios)
Post 4. CWM Recovery Backup, Format/Wipe, Restore, & Flash
Also, if you took the 651.5 update, you can only use Roms with that base b/c of differences in the kernel/radios. If you are on 651.3 or prior, don't use the 651.5 based roms b/c you'll have issues.

Think I screwed the pooch

First time flashing. Unlocked using HTC method, thought I backed up my rom using rom manager, went and flashed to Cyanogenmod 9. Didn't like it, wanted to go back to stock, but can't find the back up. Now my radio doesn't work, can't figure out which version of stock rom I need to flash either. Any help appreciated.
with htc unlock root, you need to flash roms by booting to recovery through fastboot, there are other options, but this one works 100% of the time.
Well yeah, I did that, but how to I get a stock rom back on so my phone will work? I can't connect to the mobile network now. How do I know which stock rom to download? I guess I don't understand how to tell I'm getting the right rom.
U want the latest ruu it will update everything.. dunno how u flash cause I'm s off
Ps in the future please post questions in q&a and not* development thread
did it help? hit the button!

Thanks, and sorry for not posting in correct location. Guess I don't know how to flash the RUU without being in S-OFF.
Check the stickies, there's a link to stock rooted ROMs in there somewhere. I'd link it, but I'm in a crappy area and it takes ages to load a thread.
On the other hand, why not just pick a ROM that's not in alpha and actually has most features working?

You would want to boot into the bootloader, relock it and DL the RUU found in this LINK. Once downloaded, run the RUU.exe file on your pc while your phone is in the bootloader. It will flash your phone with the stock 2.17 update. When you are completed, boot back into bootloader and unlock your phone again using the HTC Unlock method. From there, you can flash any ROM with a 2.17 base and should be fine, but remember do a backup and to wipe first.
Thanks doeboy711!
I'm not too impressed with TWRP2 as it wasn't completely wiping things when it should have been so I recommend the older TWRP 1.1 (recovery). Also since you have hboot 1.5 you'll probably find Flash Image GUI a little easier to use for flashing kernels. If you didn't flash the right kernel that might be why your radio is not working. You can find flash image gui Here. It's pretty self explanatory. Before you flash a new rom, open Flash image gui, select kernel, browse to the rom. Let it do it's thing and when it prompts you to reboot to recovery, flash your rom like normal.
Actually, do I want to flash the RUU since it's still S-ON?
Do you have a HBoot 1.5? If so, that is the only way to upgrade to the new 2.17 base, which is the base of all the new ROM's. Just ensure that you lock the bootloader before you run the RUU or it will fail. It won't brick your device, but you will have to run it twice, learned the hard way here lol. Just pull your battery and boot into bootloader, lock it and then run the RUU if you did run it while it was unlocked still.
If you have a lower Hboot and can gain S-off, then no, don't run the RUU. You should be able to get S-off and flash anything you want at anytime.
Not sure how I'm supposed to get the RUU without a premium account at filefactory
Which hboot are you on? 1.4 or 1.5?
Sorry, hboot 1.50

Post 55 had another DL for it but I saved you the time to try and find it and here it IS.
doeboy711, you are awesome. Thanks for the help, I'm gonna try it right now.
Do I backup and wipe before I flash this RUU?

Well you will loose everything once you run the RUU, so if you want to back up apps it's up to you. The RUU will wipe everything for you though, so don't worry about that.
I've got it back to normal. Thanks for your help.

[Q] Update 4.05.605.14 710RD on S-ON Phone

Can some please list the details of installing the OTA-Global-Stock-4.05.605.14 710RD-Rooted.zip on a S-ON phone? Or any other way to avoid the OTA update from automatically trying to install and eventually aborting? I'm VERY new to the rooting terminology so please be specific. Thanks!
So nobody can help me with this?
Do I have to uproot and relock the bootloader to get the OTA, or is there another way to flash the update?
to get OTA you have to be relocked. did you check this thread yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250494
I've read through several of the posts. They seem more relevant to S-OFF, I'm still S-ON. I've re-locked the bootloader but the OTA still stops at the bootloader screen when the phone reboots. Do I have to "flash" the OTA manually from there using a computer (i.e. fastboot flash recovery ..\OTA.zip)?
You also need to be on stock Rom with stock recovery for the ota to work

That's what I figured, so just go back to stock. I think I can remember to do this (I had to to it a couple of months ago when I got a warranty replacement), but if you have any advice on this it would be great. Thanks!
Are you on the global leak now? If not just run the latest ruu for ics 605.12 which you can find at shipped-roms under vigor.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Have 3.14.605.13.710RD installed.
You could run the 605.12 ruu as it has the same hboot or extract the stock recovery from that and install it, as long as your on a non modified stock Rom you should be able to get the update.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
Thanks! That worked... BUT... now it looks like I have a bigger problem. I was able to get the updates and re-root but when I was restoring my backup I could not boot up. Because I have the update HBOOT I can't go back and do the stock RUU, I am able to boot up into TWRP recovery but now I am TOTALLY lost. When I shut down from recovery it says I don't have an OS installed, idea ideas?
I got it! Kept reading various posts and re-installed AmonRA instead of TWRP and was able to install the OTA-Global-Stock-4.05.605.14 710RD-Rooted ROM, already had flashed the boot.img. Wow! How does anyone figure out how to do this stuff in the first place?!
