Can I enable Surface Dithering on a Samsung ROM? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Surface Dithering improves the quality of the images shown on the screen.
CM9 has the option to enable it. How can I do it on a Samsung ROM, if it's possible?

Doubt it. You have to understand, stock roms are built for ordinary phone users, not people like us. Ordinary phone users wouldn't even know what surface dithering is let alone what a setting to toggle it on/off does.
That's why you only see it in custom firmware.

I understand what you mean, but there are lots of mods and tweaks for a great multitude of Samsung ROMs, so... isn't there one that can enable surface dithering? It's a great feature which I'd like to have on my SII! :/
Oh, and I don't use a stock Samsung ROM, but a modified one (Omega v15).

Ask Indie if he can maybe include an option to toggle dithering in a future release of Omega ?

just edit your build.prop and add this line
persist.sys.use_dithering=1
it works on every rom but differences are negligable

Join Us on IRC
Welcome to Cognition 777! The idea behind this rom is to unify my rom making efforts into a single rom for the i9100 and the i777 with only minor changes between them to make managing two or three roms take the time of one rom. I have decided to base everything on the i9100 stock firmware simply because it has less restrictions, more frequent updates, and way more options when it comes to customizations.

Still need to make a tweaked kernel and tweaked framework to account for the button changes, but other then that it works on both devices.

If I am using the S2 Euro version (well Australian in my case, but anywho, NOT the US variant) will I be OK to move straight across - or should I wait for these 'tweaked' features as my buttons won't function appropriately, and is more suited for people with AT&T variant atm?
Cognition 2 1.5.1 has been a dream-boat thus far, but as a Business phone, want to make the transition as painless as possible (obviously a WIPE is recommended?), so I'll be guided by you.
Cheers!
EDIT: This is obviously KI3/4 too?

This is the stock AT&T version, I777UCKH7.
I would stick with Cognition S2 for now if it is a business phone, I haven't been able to test on any other variants yet.
What base is this? KH7? (EDIT: Derp)

Lol, thought about naming the rom Cognition 777.. still might, what do you guys think?!
Oh, DG, any way to make the SMS app black in convo view? I hate having the text box be black and the background white.
Also, can you revert the sound icons back to the Captivate behavior? Because the vibe icon in the status bar is there when Vibration is set to Always, not when the phone is in Vibe mode. And when in silent, it has both no sound icon and vibe icon. Waste of space. Pretty please make one icon for state of phone, no icon for sound and vibe, and a vibe icon for vibe?

First off, thanks for the rom (s)
Cognition has been THE favorite since the start. But enough praise;-)
I'd like to make a small request since you're modding the camera:
1. Please keep the volume shutter button. I cannot live without it.
2. Please consider removing battery limit on the camera, and opening for playing music and using phone at the same time as taking pictures..
For the rest.. Just do your thing man!
I'm exited to try the next version..

CM9 Advantages?

What advantages will/does CM9 provide over just running the stock ICS build for the TFP? I'm pretty happy with stock once I can disable a few choice programs, but I'm interested in CM9. I've used other ROMs for my other devices and for my Original TF, but I'm having a hard time deciding with my Prime.
It looks like they are adding some sort of quick settings to the notification area and they have a performance menu in the settings. They usually have a customizable lock screen as well.
CM is normally a good solution to get to a more "vanilla" experience, however with the TFP the experience is fairly vanilla anyway. I'm shying away from switching to CM9 because I wonder if we will be able to port over the asus quick settings. I don't want to go to CM9 if that means losing the ability to toggle performance modes and ips/super ips+ modes.
CM does have lots of cool lock screen options. Also CM normally has built in overclocking/governor profiles which are great for conserving power.
Has the source code for the ICS kernel been released yet for TFP ?
i really dont think the performance toggles matter...CM will likely support changing of cpu frequencies via the settings menu as long as the kernels that are built have the frequency slots...so lets say balanced mode is 1.3 u would go into the settings menu of the rom and as long as the kernel has the slot u can select the min frequency and the max 1.3 also if the kernel supports undervolting you can set that via settings menu as well...no need for the asus performance modes...because its built in already to the rom usually i know that AOKP has this for the gnex and tab as well. as for the IPS+ thats something the CM team will have to add support for i think.
I can't find any information on the CM9 feature list either....love to see one.
Does Bluetooth GPS and Bluetooth controller work natively (without add on apps)?

judging from the posted video it seems the BT stack in CM9 for the TFP is working...but cant confirm it.
Cm9 would be good if you wanted to customize almost every aspect, even screen color temperature and cpu speed. Other that that I would not get it. I'm just going to get a custom kernel for the clock speeds because I like the way it us set up now

I'd be very interested in something similar to Siyah kernel for the SGS2.

[Q] S3 + custom roms

I'm contemplating trading my GNex in for a S3 LTE. Was playing with a non-LTE S3 in the shop earlier and noticed the S3 has three dedicated buttons (one hard, two touch) on the bottom that roughly equals the GNex's "menu" (the house-shaped one), back and a funny third button that seems to activate the "options" within apps. JB/ICS has a built in app-switcher but I dont see this or some Samsung version of it in TouchWiz.
Question 1: if I were to install a custom ROM onto the S3, what would those three buttons do? I presume the "back" and "home" buttons would behave the same, would that funny upside-down "U" button then toggle the app-switcher?
Question 2: How does the S3's camera work on a custom ROM? Does it use the native camera app or is there a Samsung camera .apk that can be downloaded? If you use the JB native app, would the photo quality be the same as it would be on a regular S3 w/ the factory ROM? Do the custom ROMS have adequate drivers to support the full 8M and higher sensitivity? The GNex's crap camera is driving me nuts
Question 3: Perhaps the most important question; I want to move onto a custom ROM b/c Samsung's slow at updating their firmware, and also b/c I want to get rid of the customization that comes w/ the S3 (namely TouchWiz and what they've done to the notification/status bars + menus etc). Is there a way to do this w/o going to a custom ROM?
Sorry lots of questions, but the S3 suddenly looks a lot more restrictive than the GNex

1. The buttons do Menu, home and back.
2. I haven't tried many camera apps but they all seem much the same, you will need to try it I suppose.
3. I am not sure if you got confused but I know I did!
You want to install a custom rom without installing a custom rom? No, I don't think you can do that.

Rom Index ..
Button remain the same unless changed by the rom maker .
Camera the same if using Samsung based custom rom.
3 is impossible without using a custom rom .
You can flash stock Samsung firmware often before the update .
You can flash a custom rom with the standard ASOP Android interface .

Tks all for your help. Sorry the 3rd question was terribly written. What I'd meant to ask was whether there was a way to strip all the Samsung customization (mainly how they change the notification menu + settings menu appearance) w/o having to use a custom ROM?
@JJEgan, tks for that ROM index, it's most useful. Are you aware of any ROMs that actually change the menu button back to the "recent apps" screen? How can I get to that functionality within the stock factory ROM? HTC has a funky 3D switcher, does Samsung have something?
Mucho gracias

custom ROM = modification
what you seem to have requested...is to have modification to "strip all the Samsung customization"
so essentially...you will have to look into the option of custom ROMs.
do keep in mind that there are two main types of roms available...
Samsung based custom ROMs and Android Open Source Project (AOSP) ROMs.
Samsung based custom ROMs look virtually to be the same as the original one that you have on the phone when you first unbox it...but with small adjustments and tweaks to fix things that Samsung didnt fix, or forgot to fix...usually this means the same user experience but with better battery life, smoother UI transitions etc...generally further improving the same existing experience...
AOSP ROMs is totally different ROM experience in which many users are also interested in as it gives the user a more raw, more down to earth experience to Android...in addition, due to the fact that AOSP is more rudimentary in nature, it leads to faster rate of updates, fixes as well as modification due to the larger source tree as it relates to a wider range of AOSP compatible devices...
Galaxy Nexus is based on AOSP (without the Samsung Over-Lay) while this does typically mean a more leaner, low fat ROM, it does miss out on certain features such as in-box video playback, HDR camera functions, low motion high FPS camera functions, as well as other nifty and impressive functions...in which you would have actually paid the phone to do...
keep in mind...the Galaxy Nexus does have inferior hardware as far as most users will be concerned...
Samsung's "recent apps" can be shown by press and holding the middle physical button...

Tks buddy. The gNex is by no means a weak phone (for 99% of the population) but certainly the camera and screen leaves much to be desired. Call quality is quite iffy too, maybe b/c its microphones are too sensitive; I take calls on the road and the caller hears every car, pedestrian and bus that goes back. Sure it has dual microphones that does some level of noise cancellation but doesnt do a whole lot of good. The iPhone (esp 5) smokes the gNex here.
I'm not wild about all the Samsung functions but certainly having a better camera app w/ HDR built in, Smart Stay etc is pretty appealing. Samsung-based ROM it is then, if only they could bring back the stock JB look and feel...the cyan/B&W layout is very sleek.
Anyone here tried the LTE version (I9305)? Carriers here in HK are offering it for free w/ an unlimited LTE plan for about US50 a month. Bit of a no-brainer when it's the same effective price as the I9300 w/ more RAM ) but I wonder if there will be less custom ROMs developed, and how LTE battery life compares? I'm not a massive data hog looking to stream videos regularly but I do have to VPN home every few days
why not remove the bloatware?

if you just want to remove the bloatware, have you considered simple rooting the stock firmware (not an upgrade and will block the samsung OTA update), then using a rooted explorer or adb or something (I personally use Titianium Backup to manage all my apps and backups) to delete the bloatware??
if you anything like me (who has been with android a while now) you'll have a set of 3rd party apps - so dont need the S Memo (love noteeverything) for example you can simple remove it from the phone. I did this for a few weeks before I moved to a custom ROM.
Heres a list of what is safe to remove...

PA 3.99 for 9100

HI ALL,
I installed PA 3.99 for Samsung S2(9100) to experience Android 4.3.
But I found some issues,
1. The video call feature is missing.
2. If possible to disable Halo and PieControl, in fact, the screen side of 9100 is too small, these two attractive features will affect my input keyword and bring bad experience.
I saw some other ROM provides a enable/disable swtich for this....
3. Some other attractive Samsung device related features are not ported....is possbile to port them in this ROM, such as Swipe in call log(call or message), and Motion(all motion is not supported)

Samsung apps can't be ported,as they require special Samsung framework,You can port only a few apps, like Note or Calculator.Swipe to call and Motion therefore will never be supported.

Yes....you can use a custom stock ROM,like Biftor ROM it can be customized in many ways.
If you want to report bugs, do that in the specific thread, so the developer can work on it. But first make sure if the problems are already know, or read the bug list. There's no need for this kind of thread

What Do You Want To See In A ROM?

Hi,
I'm curious what features all of you use in ROMs or what optimisations you would like to see (CAF, a custom toolchain, etc...). This just crossed through my head while I was working on MR and a project that I will release soon. Do you guys use Xposed, do you use a custom launcher, what features do you use in other ROMs, do you use a specific DPI that you feel is more optimal, do you like custom branding or do you like the stock (if the former, feel free to make some. I'm not good with that stuff), what should I name it (I was thinking something Star Wars related), is there a custom kernel you'd like to see, do you use a custom HAL, do you use the stock dialer and messenger, etc...
This will be a long term project with no release date that will be concrete. Hopefully you guys will provide me with feedback. It will be specifically for the X as I have no plans of switching devices for a long time.
Here's another thing too. I'm doing this to teach myself. I think I brought it up once before, but I will make stupid mistakes and I hope a few of you can help me with it. I really do appreciate it. The main goal is for me to familarize myself with the device tree and with Git while providing you guys with a solid ROM
Thanks guys,
RJ

Hey,
for me are the importants things:
-layers or cm Theme
-customizable status bar
-switch back and recent
-make status bar invisible (fullscreen/immersive mode)
I use stock dialer/messenger and so on, snapdragon camera and also xposed for some tweaking. I use a custom kernel if my rom is not fast enough for me and the custom HAL with 4k recording too.
I hope this helped you,
regards from the "bad-english-speaker"
Good post, (p.s i hate star wars themed roms) pls no
auto brightness button on pull down bar
some apps like sony apps or something (so it's different to all the rest)
Well, stability and battery life conquers all. So to be precise , I like oos with dark theme and yeah custom kernel . I wish I could use Sultan's fix for camera but with that I can't use manual mode. Most of the features of cm can be added through gravitybox . Nova launcher is quite good and smooth, so I would suggest not to put much effort on launcher customization.
I see that you have taken a lot of interest in Kernel optimization and tweaking, so may be that's where you should start. Wish you luck for your projects.
Interesting thread, personally, as long as the rim has these, I'm happy :
Buttons configuration (especially hardware ones) with double and long press actions.
Layers (or cmte, but I've read layers are lighter?) in order to have a nice dark ui.
Ram bar and close button on récents.
There are so many other things that can be useful like use volume rocker to answer call, flip phone to mute call, switch to 2g when connected to Wi-Fi, enable max brightness (with custom kernel) for few minutes when in sunlight, ambient display but not during night (I hate my phone to light up in the night if I try to reach a water bottle or a kleenex lol) or gestures like swipe up on screen of to turn on and unlock the phone.
But most of these things are possible using Tasker.
But if you ask me, there are so many different (and not so different) roms out there, that I think to get glory, a new one would maybe need some awesome exclusive apps like SMS, camera, or maybe just good optimizations.
The less features in a ROM - the more stable it is. That's why I prefer Stock or CM Stock ROMs. But, anyway, the most useful features in my opinion is:
1. Playback Control (Prev/Next track with Volume buttons) - any ROM without it is almost unusable for me. Taking the phone out of the pocket each time you want to skip a track is just unbearable.
2. Double-tap to sleep - if dt2w is present, than this is a must-have feature. Peaking at the phone without even touching the power button is quite useful sometimes.
3. Viper4Android - Yes, I understand that this is a completely opt-in feature but I found myself installing it every time on every phone. The sound is just not right without it anymore.
4. STOCK Dark Theme - for some reason, every other "dark" theme developer out there thinks that theming Phone, Google Play, Messenger and other apps is cool. No, its not and its usually a weak point of any theme, because when the app gets updated everything goes to hell. I will make my own dark theme someday in a spare time. Probably based on OOS theme, because this one was actually cool. At least Android N will deliver it built-in.
Would love to see EAP-SIM authentication for WiFi in a ROM. I've tried a few and some seem to support it but I always get an "authentication error" when I try to connect. (Living in Singapore and trying to connect to SingTel WiFi, if that's any help!) So yeah, EAP-SIM support would be awesome to see in a ROM. Thanks!
And all the best for AOKParadox!

See my AOKParadox thread. I will implement the stock dark theme at least until one based off of OOS becomes available.
All I want to see in a ROM is its ease of operation and to easily see the important details.
1. Status Bar - Accurate Network Speed Indicator, Dual Clock (timezone), Date (with day of the week) & Gestures such as double tap, slide and quickpulldown
2. Hardkeys & Tristate Keys - Action Assignment (screen off, screenshot, power menu, kill all apps, last app, etc.), Single Tap, Double Tap & Long Press
3. Lockscreen - Disable Power Menu
4. When Screen is Off - Double tap to wake & Music Controls gestures
5. Others - One-handed Keyboard Operation (i'm a lefty), Ram Usage Status in recent apps

I would agree with this, along with Layers support and multi-window functionality from Android N previews since we have the ram for it.
