[Q] Stock ICS Keyboard - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I know in the market there is an ICS keyboard, but it's not as accurate as the normal ICS keyboard.
I have no problem putzing around with the system and replacing the files needed, but is there a way to extract the stock keyboard from my GSII backup (CM9) and install it on the GSIII?
EDIT: I found latinIME.apk, not sure if the one from the GSII CM9 can go into the GSIII but if it can, I'll report back. Nandroiding now so in case I screw it up, I can restore.
EDIT 2: SUCCESS! Writeup coming for Development.

The one from the market is the same thing as the one on CM9.

Looks the same, definitely doesn't react the same way. I got more typos on it than I ever did with my GSII on CM9. I had the same issue with it before the GSII had CM9. Something is wonky about the autocorrect in it.

Interesting, I never had any issues. Is your auto-correct aggressiveness different maybe?

Nope. I tried turning it up to see if it helped, never did. Something just weird about it. I know it's not 100% the same because the guy who released it, actually took feedback about the way the keyboard responded and added in features. Originally the keyboard wouldn't autocorrect ok to OK and I requested he fix it (since the GB keyboard had that) and he did. From what I could tell he built it from the ICS sources so it could be added to other devices not running ICS. That might explain why I had the issues I had. I don't know if the CM9 LatinIME.apk would run on a 2.3 device so that might be where his development of such came from.
I do speak of https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=inputmethod.latin.ported&hl=en He did also add theming to such and more. The stock CM9 keyboard has pretty much none of the extra modifications he added. I very well could be typing faster than his keyboard can keep up with, I have no idea, but I can say the only "Keyboard" that had accurate autocorrect was the CM9/ICS keyboard.

There's also a few versions in the market so we might have had different ones. Either way, glad you got it to work

Right, it very well could be another keyboard people installed, but rather than try to track down the perfect one, why not just install the right one straight from CM9?

[Q] Swype 3 beta...

Can we do this w/o root?
Swype 2 sucks after the 3b version >_<
The installer requires you to disable swype (uncheck it as an available keyboard) before it will allow you to install the beta.
Work around thought;
backup on the 4g, restore to the 3d? But I think licensing problems will exist =(
On Swype site it says if your phone came with swype it won't work.

Yeah, well, I thought maybe someone knew a trick.
If you go to HTC or Sprint's sites, they don't say the 4g can be rooted or custom roms can be flashed... Trust in the community
Anyway, I got it installed from a backup - and it works, I can tap/type with it, but the license isn't valid due to the strange install procedure, so no swyping
I uninstalled the "update" and it works again in 2.x mode :-/
Soon enough, I suppose.

try this and tell me if it works. make sure android keyboard is selected in kb settings. retore your backup of swype beta installer and swype kb, go open messaging and then change your imput method back to swype.

Completely agree. I was diggin' the 3 beta on my Hero and this version on the E3D is terrible.
I don't get why swype can't figure out how to let us update the app to the beta. seems rather simple but maybe im missing something.

Since the app is installed by the OEM in an area that doesn't allow writing to, you can't overwrite it with the new version. The OEMs also do not allow uninstalling of the app.
It sucks hard! Another reason to root.
The stock swype on the 3VO worked fine for a few days but the last two it has sucked some major ass. Its suggesting words in different languages and not picking anything close to what I intended when I swyped. Anyone else having this problem?
Also, I heard the HTC IME has a similar feature, how does that work for everyone?

Does anyone else not care for ICS?

I have tried it out but I am not thrilled by it. I still need my Go Launcher and still like MIUI a little more. I have been using a Galaxy Nexus not the ROMs here (although I have tried them). Am I safe in assuming the on screen buttons (home, back, and whatever the other one is) wont be on the GS2 since we have actually buttons? I love the ICS theme but maybe since we have had the theme for so long already it just seems old already. How do you guys feel?
Does it have anything to do with the AT&T SGS2?

Onscreen buttons won't be necessary when we get kernel source - they're a temporary workaround for our touchkeys not working right on I9100 leaked kernels.
So far, I haven't been impressed with the ICS leaks for the I9100. A little bit of kernel tuning might fix that, not sure yet.
CM9 is quite slick on the Tab 10.1 - so a properly working non-Touchwizz ICS port should be good. The problem is that Samsung's anti-developer attitude makes me doubt if CM9 will ever be properly polished on the GS2. There's just too much of a minefield of undocumented Samsungisms throughout the device.
I was not in a rush at all to get ICS. I saw Entropy's thread with working firmware and the in call audio fix so I though I would check it out. Turns out I love it. I think its a huge improvement. G+ is a nicer experience and Gmail has a new look. Having Chrome as the default browser is pretty nice with the option to view as desktop ..and since flashing CM9 I've noticed incorrectly spelled words get a red line under them for easy spell check/fix.. I am absolutely loving it. I can't seem to pull myself away from ICS now

I don't even want it.....at all. AOSP used to be clean......nothing......minimal. Now its a iPhone. A whole designated launcher with integrated everything ......its Touchwiz.....its Motoblur.....its....Sense. The official version we will see will be a themed settings menu and a new version number.....I guess its cool the wifi icon and battery will be blue.....there are a couple of things that make it alright in its function. One thing is for sure is that it makes the device it was designed around lag like a son of a *****....shutters like a frozen homeless hooker.
Maybe a cooked version comes out sweet.....Entropy will make a nice sweet kernel I am sure.....but official **** and straight AOSP .....I will be fine without it.

You guys do realize you can use any launcher you want right? I've used ADW and Nova on my i9100. Both work great...
ICS Fixed the Settings menu layout. In GB there was way too many things. ICS cleaned them up. I would say it's more MIUI then iPhone.
And EVERY iteration of Android AOSP has come with a new theme. Google keeps it fresh every time. This time was dark with lots of bright blue. Next will be Light with lots of... who knows, orange, maybe...
You can theme it how you like, you can still run what ever launcher you want. Or you can go back to GingerBread... All I can say is that for me it has fixed all my little complaints, if I had them.
I have ICS running on my captivate right now. I do like the new UI, but I have to agree that with all the ICS themes out there, I am not excited by the look. It does seem old already. At this point I'm on the fence. There have been some awesome roms come out recently in the development section so I can wait. Truth be told I am rocking the black and chrome theme on checkrom right now and loving it. More my style

I like it....but my iScrewed works way to good for my purposes. No issues. When all is worked out i will use cm9 though. I keep my eyes on the thread over there.
Waiting for Kernel source before I make my decision, but probably going to jump when that happens.

FWIW, I am running [ROM] [CDMA] AOSP ICS / CM9 - BUILD7 [03/04] from http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11697-rom-cdma-aosp-ics-cm9-build7-0304/ on my 7" Sprint Galaxy Tab, and I really like it, even these "extra" onscreen buttons have added value in the tab world.
But I can say for sure that I don't want ICS on my phone yet (regardless of the business with the touchkeys)...
ICS is cool and all. But I don't really care for work arounds. I want my soft key buttons to work.

Exactly. Its got its hooks in about 80-90% of the firmware (just like Sense does).
As for liking ICS, remember the Froyo days? We had a lot of well working smooth roms and made Froyo enjoyable, then Gingerbread came out which seemed more like a theme than anything. But it was under the hood that made a lot of differences. The same is true for ICS, except the "theme" is a lot better, cleaner and intuitive. The under the hood stuff seems like a bigger leap then Froyo to GB was.
So am I excited, yeah. Theming can be done on any phone/rom so Im not worried about that, but where they placed things from older versions is much welcomed. Its the underneath part that Im mostly excited about.

Red.....I agree with everything you said. I do understand the depths of Touchwiz also.....I won't whine though as I am running a nicely themed version right now.
I also am right there with you with the old 2.1 roms ....those are what made me love android and spend the first year I was a member here reading until 4 in the morning. I am OK with the direction the ICS OS is going.....its just the look and what is now considered AOSP that is hard for me to digest. I realize that it is just a canvas but I am old school...every ROM I download, I pull apart change what I want, theme it....some times build my own custom theme....so I am not worried about the look over the long haul.
What I can say is that I was running ICS on my HD2 before the nexus was even released....it was fun at first....but the new-ness rubs off real quick....somethings I loved, some I hated......None of those things are something that I feel I am missing out on. Hey to each their own....my brother in-law is rubbing his nexus in my face every chance he gets.....and refuses to believe, that I don't believe, his phone is the greatest ever. But I don't......I just don't think its the same android....its cool and sooner or later we are all getting it whether we want it or not.
The one thing I am going to miss, is taking my brand new bloated phone, and flashing a sweet. ....squeaky clean AOSP ROM and after it booted seeing that sweet minimal dock and nothing else......now after a flash the first thing I have to do is get that hideous launcher with their oversized gimmicky icons off?????.....AOSP just aint what it used to be. I think I am just jaded that they took away a little piece of my Zen man...

Can someone test Swype for me?

Hey guys!
I have a small favor to ask, and I figure this is probably the best place. I was wondering if anyone with the Note could open up a quick text message with Swype on and try something for me.
When the keyboard pops up, take your index finger and swipe back and forth very quickly on the letters. You don't have to type anything specific, just go back and forth fast.
Could you let me know which of the two scenarios occur?
1) Nothing happens until you finally stop swiping and when you do, you get one long word and/or a message saying that it wasn't recognized; or,
2) You get a bunch of small words that are being entered WHILE you're going back and forth.
One of these two have to result, and I found some inconsistencies with the touch screen today.
Thanks <33
Both occur depending on speed when I go at the speed I would have used on my Captivate it breaks it up into little words (used swype for almost two years so quickly) but when I slow down it works normally. I found this issue out when I first got my phone and sadly had to switch from swype as I cant swype near "full speed".

Ok, so I'm assuming that you're saying your Note is affected by this as well?
I ask because I was in the vicinity of a few other Notes today. The issue was confirmed on 2 out of the 5 devices. You could not force the Swype to break on the other 3 no matter how insanely fast you swiped. I have a feeling the issue is a little more wide-spread that I had originally thought. Swype is literally unusable for me in this state, I can't swipe nearly as fast as I'm used to, and it causes me to actually type way slower than I'm used to because of it. I have a replacement on the way, but I wanted to dig a little into the problem in the meantime.
Edit:
I wanted to add, it doesn't matter which rom I'm on, which version of Android, or which version of Swype. I've tried it all.
I don't have any issues on mine. I do use the s pen tho. Pretty damn fast too. Quick question though, do you usually Swype back and forth whilst typing etc.

Swiping back and forth is just a surefire way to reproduce the problem. For someone that swipes fast, it makes the problem a real issue. A friend of mine on an unaffected Note tried using mine to swype and he instantly recognized that he wasn't able to.

Sounds like you have a good Note.
I've formatted the cache partition about 40 times since I've had the Note. My problem persists through all of that. It was an issue with the stock GB, and DAG's ROM, and the ICS roms that I'm testing now. They are all the same.
I am envious of you. Hopefully my new one will work right.
Other tweaks I've made since upgrading to ICS has been to reduce my animation transitions to .5x (from 1x) and reduce VM heap from 256 to 128.
Just trying to think of any little thing that might help for some reason.
Edit: also have 2D rendering forced on in developer settings.

Edit: interesting. just tried the same using my finger instead. get short words a lot. sometimes none, but often it starts breaking it up. So I think someone else reported this same finding so it must lie somewhere within that. To me though I hate using swype with my finger. Unless I just washed my hands there's way too much drag to swype quickly. With the s.pen I can go twice as fast and oddly enough this issue does not appear.

Yep, that's the issue. I dislike using the s-pen for Swype, but that's totally a preference thing. I can go as fast as I need to with my finger, most of the time.
There is a variable here somewhere. You are inflicted with the same issue with your finger that a couple of us have, where I've personally tested this on two Notes where I could confirm it wasn't a problem. I hate to just think it's some flaw in the touch screens, but I don't know what else to try.

Are you on GB or ICS? I'll go stock later, confirm that the problem is still there, then I'll upload it.

s-voice for ics only, even then it had to be modified as its exclusive for Samsung s3.
If it worked in gb even if it was not that good, surely it could be made to work in ics.
Though the installation of s-voice was without any problems.

Mic and camera are at the bottom of the pile of things to do, getting an OS that was never designed for the TouchPad is no easy thing, drivers and wrappers have to be written from scratch with no support from HP. So have faith in the developers, remember most of them are either at full time work or school/college and are offering you there work for free, maybe you could ask HP to fix the camera and mic I think they would abandon that idea faster than they abandoned the TouchPad itself.

Exactly what BIGSimon said. CM9 is still ALPHA. Meaning some things will not work. Not everything that is released is perfect right away. Developing ROMs isn't always an easy task. What they have done in 5 months is pretty damn great.
yeah i know that. but i seem to recall that it at least halfway worked with cm7. plus, in a short time android will have another os version, jellybean or something. and then what? will cm9 be abandoned and work start with that one? and once again, the camera and mic will be pushed back down to the bottom of the list in order to work on more essential things? seems like a endless cycle

There's a big difference between Android 2.3.7 gingerbread and Android 4.0.4 ice cream sandwich which meant everything had to be re-written to work Android 5 jelly bean is more of an evolution of ICS so drivers will carry over, all the work that's been done now will mean that when JB is released the touchpad will get it a lot faster with everything working

JellyBean will be a minor update, it will have a version 4.1, it isn't as huge step as going from 2.3 to 4.0.
Anyway, sound is surely being worked on (developers (partially, maybe) have gotten rid of bad screen-off sound issue last week), and we will see some progress in a time. If you want a tablet with all features working out-of-the-box, i guess, you should buy another device.
The latest audiolibs seems to be working great. Too bad S-Voice is having connection problems. Anyone know how to resolve the server issues in S-Voice?
+ 1 ;-)

I was able to get it working by flashing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667046
Works wonderfully with the new audiolib!
Is there a flashable audiolib somewhere?
--update--
Found it

Nighlyy 0620 has everything mic needs already included.

spelling correction, where is it

Where is spelling correction like I had on my galaxy nexus, did Samsung not add it because Verizon , anyway if someone knows how to get it on here let me know, thanks
AGREED. At first I was like hmm something seems odd with this keyboard... then I realized what it is. There's no auto-correction. At all. There's supposed to be an option for it in the keyboard settings, but for us whether it's a Verizon only problem or what, we just don't have it.
If someone can confirm on another US carrier other than Verizon that they have auto-correction and the option in the keyboard settings, then that'll be my final WTF VERIZON.

Looked around, and it seems that the Samsung stock keyboard in general just does not have auto-correction. Oh well. Good thing I'm using stock JB keyboard, it's amazing.
