Hey guys,
I've tried CM7, Revolutions and Asgard for GB Roms and for me and my 10 hour work days, I need something that'll last a little more and will respond better. My experience with the three roms were not the best, but promising. It didn't dissuade me from GB roms, but rather excited me. I just am gonna have to wait until they're 100% smooth haha.
Anyway, I've only ever really used 2.2 Roms and the only ones I've ever loaded was Axura, Nero/Bionix, and Trigger (and flagship, but I don't count that because it was for a day). I'm wanting something different and I think I've decided on these, but if you guys recommend something different please let me know.
Anyway, I would love to hear your opinions and I appreciate the time you guys are taking to respond.
Respectfully,
Vahdyx
I like Bi-Winning and most other 2.2.1 ROMs just because my phone seems to do really well with them. But to be honest, everyone is going to have something different to say. My best advice is just pick one and give it a try for a few days and see how you like it. If you don't like it (or even if you do!) try another, and see which you like better...
Well, for GB I'm currently using Revolution RC1.
It's pretty neat.
Just one thing, when he uploads something, wait for everyone else to try it.
It seems like the roms always work on his phone and everyone else's just bootloops.
The current version is very stable and fast though.
For 2.2, dunno if you've tried Boinix NextGen v2.
That one was one of the best ROMS I've ever tried.
Not a single error anywhere and the battery was awesome.
for the 2.21 roms try Biwinning or V if you want to try a good GB rom try the Asgard Rom it is excellent
Hey vahdyx,
I'm a big fan of vanilla ROMs. If you're going to stick with 2.2 for now, I can tell you that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054032 is great. There are little bugs though, such as the dialer crashing frequently when editing contact info.
If you want a vanilla ROM with GPS and Swype preinstalled, there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832532, but I haven't tried this one.
If you do end up using a 2.2 or 2.2.1 ROM, I highly suggest using the Bali kernel found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043947. This kernel optimizes battery life so that your phone will have an easier time making it through your workday, but is definitely not for you if you're an overclocker.
From what I've heard, if you are currently at 2.3, if you want to go back to Froyo, I *believe* that you have to ODIN back to stock first. http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/. Youtube is useful if you don't know how to do this.
Hope this helps!
I suggest sgs hybrid it runs really great its a 2.3 JVP rom and it has great speed and battery

Good luck!
I'm only a month old Androidian... and within a month I leant a lot frm XDA about installing custom rom/rooting and using new themes etc...
But I am really lost at one point ... which custom Rom is the best one and is flawless... i mean some times im really confused bet the top ROM maker's ... I knw that everybdy's workin hard to make a best out of it....
but I would really like 2 knw who's using which custom ROM tht's been used by maximum number of users and whch seen flawless (at least fast and 90% flawless)
Everyone has different tastes, so you should try a few roms to choose the one that you think it's better.
You must keep in mind that no rom is 100% perfect and there are always little flaws. When I install a custom rom, I always do a few tweaks here and there and add or remove that I like or dislike.
I've tried Exynos, Cognition, Villain, SkyRom and Lite'ning. To my taste, Villain and Lite'ning are the best, with Exynos in second place. FYI, Now I'm on Villain 2.1 with Ninphetamine 2.0 Kernel and KG2 modem, just to try something different to Lite'ning 3.1.
I'm eagerly waiting for MIUI and Cyanogen to become stable, but in the meantime I'm switching between the aforementioned roms.
I feel that Cyanogen is one of the most stable roms out there, even though they're nightlies. No sudden reboot, excellent batterylife, not to mention the huge amount of tweaks and settings built in..

For now I am staying (and thus voting) "original stock ROM".
This will very likely change once CM7 is finished for the SGS2
But its still early days of i9100 and every now n thn a new official stock rom is release or I must say "leaked" (thanks 2 samfirmware) .....
n it really sux whn after installing latest cf-root n custom rom , theme and backup restoration setting Home widgets your own way everthing ... which sometime takes many days to settle.
... and after doing all that @SamFirmware tweets that a new I9100 firmware is leaked... and then forgetting all the hardwrk we did to make i9100 stylish n fast, we start refreshing XDA forum to see whether smbdy has released a custom rom or not ?
n the Impatient ones takes backups via titanium and wipes everything and get back to Stock Rom to see the diff (deliberately ignoring the fact tht titanium restore will work only after rooting) ...
Its really a fact... tht happen with most of the ppl...
After trying various Roms in last few months... I stay with either Villain ROM OR Official ROM (CF Rooted ) .... hope that if some day it could be dual booted like my PC is.
I stick with the official ROM and customize it to my own needs.
I love MIUI as I love to heavily customise look and feel with ease.

CM7 it runs really great for me with no issues. I am hoping to get my Dual boot working soon to boot then i will be set.
I love batista 70. For me the best.
I think Leomar v2.6 is the best because of the personalization you can do and it's very very very easy to do!!

i agree with you
Cyanogenmod definitely. I never was one to enjoy being tied down to OEM software which were uncompatible with each other.
If you want a custom custom rom check out Insanity II... quick, stripped down, bare bones, no non-sense. Since you only run essentials it ups your battery life by quite a bit.
On Sammy ROMs Cognition and Darky are very stable and have decent battery life.
CM7 is highly customizable but you miss certain features like A2DP, FM radio, better camera , hi def videos that are part of Samsung ROMs. Some of these features are being worked upon and would be available whenever the stable version comes out.
Some people have better battery life on CM7. strangely it is not the case with me.
MIUI is cute but a big battery drain.
overall there is no best ROM or anything . you try different ROMs and use the one that suits your needs.
I'm using leomar 2.6 with nimpho 2.1.3 and it goes very smooth.. Battery goes for 2days (ofc that depends..) and in general works for me. Plus you can customize it and make it as you like through his kitchen with mods, themes etc.

My Vote is definitely for VillainRom 2.4.2 and kernel 2.0.5 woked best for me... smooth, minimalistic and no bugs... cheers
I am also on villainrom 3.0 but with ninph 2.1.3 .... my battery is draining very fast... any second best ppl can suggest?

Agreed. I used CM7 for about 2 days before i switched back to (the vampiric) stock. It had great battery life for me but i do use bluetotth and FM radio on a daily basis.
I get my S II tomorrow and I've been looking around alot to see what the best rom out is, but there's loads of roms available.
What I'm asking is instead of spending multiple hours going through every rom to find out whats good, whats peoples favorites or what would you recommend,
Stuff I need working -
Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
(These are musts)
I would preferably like things like overclocking stuff that utilizes the dual core 1.2ghz processor.
Any ideas and thanks in advance
With multiple exact same posts as yours .
One their is no bests rom .
Two read the individual rom threads and make up your own mind.
Three if unable to make up your mind stick with stock .
Four posts belongs Q&A

Camera
Onboard Storage
GPS
You should find they come with the phone not the rom .

Firstly sorry for not noticing the many other posts dedicated to this subject.
Secondary, camera etc may come with the phone but it doesn't specifically come with the rom, I have a Xperia Arc at the moment and the freexperia project doesnt have the camera up and running, so I feel like that was a valid question.
All I was asking is what people are using? What you prefer?
Not an index to what you hate and love about every rom

Coming from HTC Desire, I would of asked exactly the same questions. When new ROMS came out on HTC Desire, or the X10, not everything was working right from the start. Even on the ROMS on this phone it seems not everything is working, so surely the question is valid.
most are just themed roms and don't offer much over a rooted and tweaked stock rom.

The most famous roms have all the features your looking for i believe, Better Camera, overclock 1.6 Ghz, Better GPS etc.
But you can't say which one is best cause they all are different in their own way, specially in themes and so on.

@JJEgan, you were right in the other thread... this is getting ridiculous
@OP: there's really not much difference between them. The different ones are probably CM7, MIUI and Oxygen (they're not stable), the rest just have some modifications, and they mostly are stable with everything working. Just see which one has more views and pick one you think you like. Creating a thread like this has absolutely no point, you will get zero information out of it... even if people start answering you, you'll just get a random sample of what some people are using.
Stock
Just root it and add a kernel like niphetamine - get juicedefender too.
Simples.

Villain Rom 2.4.2 best for me. It's based on stock firmware so gps, camera etc is working fine. Browser is laggy though so use Dolphin HD or another one from the market.
You get Villain tweaks too!
Flash the Ninphetamine kernel as its overclocked to 1.6ghz.
Sorted

I agree with some of the others in this thread, just stock is best. Samsung polished the firmware really well and its amazing. Id say just flash a custom kernel if you want to do extra stuff like oc/uv or something. Really the only time i ever switch from stock is to try CM7 then or something. Other than that imo stock is best.
GS2 is the first phone where stock meet all my needs. Ive played with a couple of different roms and usually something happens after the first week.
Most roms in dev section give you a all in one package. So must of the tweaks that you would normally install manually are already preinstalled. This is the fun part about android with so many choices, try a couple out first and see what fits your needs.
This is a valid question, the more popular the phone the more hours of searching it takes. CM7 is buggy as hell. Stay away. Stick with stock and just flash a kernel. Samsung did a good job actually with this phone, especially with the skinning in my opinion. It amazes me people buy a super specd phone like this the install ROMS that strip the phone of it's power. CM7 is taking way too long honestly and it's absurd how buggy it is at this point in the phones release history.

Just a little rectification for OP and others: CM7 is an unstable nightly build officially, but it's usable. I have it for a week now, and I haven't had any serious problems. It's stable and I can use it just like the stock ROM, with very few limitations. I'm not going back to other roms for now
Leomar's revolution is amazing. Lots of customised stuff.
VillainROM for a stock look which allows for easily added tweaks. Friendly thread as well.
Ninphetamine kernel works great with both roms...

I am using Lite'ning 6.1 with speedmod kernel T32 but it has not BLN so I will change kernel.

Cyanogenmod ofcourse
I dont have a rooted SGS2 but Cyanogenmod is on the vids very good and smooth.
There are a few issues but there are not major bugs.
Only A2DP dont work ... And a few another things !
hi guys...i'm currently using samsung galaxy ace but i'm planning of buying a s2 in the next few days...but before that i have a few questions to ask...
1)there's so many ics rom out there, which is the official ics rom?i'm so confused
2)which is the best ics rom for s2?the official ics rom,or the custom ics rom?and please give me the link
3)is the ics build stable...any bugs?
4)how is battery life of this phone?i use moderate gaming, calls, sms and some wifi...can it last for 2 days?
i hope u guys out there can answer to my questions...i'm a newbie here and i hope that i didnt cause any inconvinience in any way....thx
1) There are several 'official' ICS builds released
2) There is no such thing as the "best ICS rom for SGS2". You have your phone setup differently to everyone else, you use your phone differently to everyone else and your phone came out of the factory slightly differently to everyone else's.
A rom that runs well for me might not run well for you.
I suggest you go the development sections of the forum & read the first few pages and the the last 10-20 pages of the particular threads devoted to different roms. That way you will get an idea of the features/pluses/minuses of each rom, and also see other users' experiences with that rom.
Then you can test different roms for yourself to find one that works best for you.
3) Yes. All the non-stock ICS builds have bugs of one kind or another.
4) Too many variables determine battery life to say 'the battery life of the phone is good/bad/etc. As per 2), it's determined by how you use the phone, how you have it setup, whether you have constant good signal where you live/use the phone (poor signal means less battery life) and a whole lot of other things. Can it last for two days ? If I only used my phone for a couple of calls & a bunch of SMS per day with the phone in idle the rest of the time, I could probably get more than a week out of a charge. But it's a smartphone, and who uses it like that ?
Best ics rom = cyanogen mod9

Like with any other phone. Devs will develop, something else comes along and off they go, some Devs continue to develop.
Back on topic, try out an official ICS rom first, there are a few as they are for different regions bit any non Asian firmware will work on the international I9100.
Then have a read through the custom roms and decide what's best for you, no one can tell what's best for you its just a matter of trying.
You've got plenty of choices, stock Samsung rom, custom Samsung rom, AOSP, AOKP, CNA and Miui.

I would recommend you Wajk's WIUI! I've been using it now for about 1 month and im overwhelmed by the functionality and the smoothness of this rom! The only thing is that it is no clean ICS that you actually wanted, but it is definitley worth a try for you

Whatever phone you buy I am sure you will find a good ICS rom that works well for you. Whether that is a "stock" samsung rom, or a custom rom like CM9, that depends. But isn't half the fun of these phones the fact that you can chop and change and try different things?
I'm using HyDrOG3N-ICS 23.03 and it seems pretty kick ass. Granted it only came out 2 days ago so I haven't had a long time to test it But I might decide to change to a different rom again soon who knows? I suggest you take a look in the "Galaxy S II Android Development" forum and look for posts with [ROM] in the name. Read about them and choose one that sounds cool. If you try it and it's not cool, just try another one
I was in a similar situation a few days ago. I had never used a custom rom on my S2 but after Samsung ICS update disapointed me, i decided to find one. I've tried quite a few, somes would have apps that crash all the time etc, some wouldn't boot. I even managed to soft brick my phone.
I then found Ressurection Remix that came with Vertemus' Domination theme.. Installed 9.6. Was great and i loved it. Then 1.0 came out, so decided to give it a try. And i can say that the speed difference was major. More fluid. Only issue i now have is that the domination theme is wierd in the notification menu ( hard to explain ... the black is just too... black on the items. its just a minor anoyance )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854&page=1589
To conclude, i think there is no perfect mod. I was really happy with 9.6 but when i tried 1.0 i noticed that the other version had a few issues.
Hi Forum
Just curious for your opinions on what the fastest 4.1.1+ ROM is. Also another one I'm curious about is the most stable.
All opinions are welcome!
Thanks in advance!
Xda is a development site and doesn't want to be an opinion site. Your encouraged to try all the roms yourself and see what works best for you. No two devices are alike so what works best for you on your device won't necessarily work for others.

This is a forum.. a Q/A forum in fact.. opinions are welcome! I have the same question.. I've tried several roms and so far they all have been pretty stable yet all have been bigtime sluggish/laggy. All that I've tried were 4.4 roms. Are the 4.1/2 roms any better? If I use the overclocking at min 1000 max 1500 I get pretty decent performance but stock is just terrible. I'm gonna try a 4.1 rom now but if anyone has any daily drivers that are peppy and stable from 4.1 and up I'd appreciate opinions.. as the op would I'd assume.
Ok.. so I ended up giving a 4.1 rom a try.. Liquid-jb-v.20-rc7 to be exact and a HUGE difference in speed.. everything is peppy and smooth at stock speeds in fact not a huge difference from my LG G2 in cruising the system and the internet via Boat browser. I tested Cameras/GPS/Bluetooth everything is perfect working order.. and after a few hours of use no fc's or reboots. Battery life .. only time will tell but my battery is old and has always been terrible. Only other thing is terrible charging speed.. even with the fast charge option in the settings. If anyone has any experience with this let me know. So overall this rom i give :good::good:

In my humble opinion so far trying a bunch I've come down to Liquid smooth for 4.42 Kit Kat.
If that is where you want to go. That is the latest version only. With Polluti0n's wonderful patches.
Mine using "Uber". Fairly smooth fairly fast. Not to great on battery, but still "tweaking" away.
I've tried so many Roms and versions of those Roms I thought I would save you some frustration.
I've had a lot.
I moved my service to TMobile and am now using Flapjaxx's ROM with wifi calling and couldn't be happier. This is the stock ROM with all the S-Pen apps and wifi calling and is smooth as butter and fast with no tweaking needed. I actually like Samsung'g skin.
A very good and stable ROM is bigfau's blackstar ROM and if it had wifi calling, it'd be my daily driver.
A gave all the KK ROMS as spin and hats off to the devs working on giving it to us but they all require too many patches and some still get FCs, etc.
i'm in the same boat as you guys, looking for a stable rom for my sisters Gnote, tried cm10.1 and aokp non OC. CM keeps restarting, and aokp is pretty sluggish. i will give liquid JB a try, you guys think that i should maybe try an ICS rom mayeb it will be a bit faster?
I have been running Unofficial AOKP 4.4.2 Rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609761. It is the most stable 4.4.2 rom I have used. Other roms always crash during youtube and video playback causing a full reboot. I like Unofficial CM 11. But the gallery crashes if there is an mp4 file in it. If you don't care for AOKP. AOCP is by far the best Jelly Bean ROM. (4.3).
Well for me i flashed the canadian rooted base version (its crazy how the att rom is overbloated ) with the phaze kernel and the multiwindow mod . That the best experience i ever had no random reboot like the aosp roms and no lag ( I use the seeder app that reduce most stock jb lags )
