[Q] Really, whats the difference? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so im looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 specifically in the Frankenstein firmwares section because, seriously, if your going to put bits and peices together they gotta be the good bits n peices right?
Im mostly confused tho, whats the difference between LP2, LP3, LPS, LP4, LP7, LPD, etc.?
I know many of them were released in different regions, branding is going to be slightly different, apps i dont care about i usually strip out the crappy apps anyways.
I flash my modem because its what works best for me. Kernel i use Siyah. What differences, if any, will i see with the different roms? Or are they all pretty much the same?
If they are all pretty much the same then that begs the question why all the different versions? Which is widely accepted as "the best" or "One of the best" ?
EDIT
That last sentance was more directed as a "stay away from JPKI1 its rather buggy, ____ Is pretty much the same but without the bugs". On my prime its the same firmware pretty much worldwide, just translation is different for each region. Its easy to tell which version is better, usually the higher number is newer and has the previous versions bugs worked out. Samsung had to go weird and make regional updates so every region has a different version. THAT is where my confusion is.

Lol, in reguards to that i HAVE been trying out as many roms as i can and frankly im starting to forget which ones i tried and which ones i didnt try. I have found that some are just bad and people say to avoid them because most people have problems, thats more what i was hoping for with that statment.
I dont expect to have people do the work for me or try all the roms for me, and i know whats good for one person may not be good for another, im just... Overwhelmed by the abundance of options that are all apparently the same. Thats all.
To reiterate: THIS IS NOT A WHICH IS BEST thread, its a whats the difference thread, and im hoping to be pointed in the direction of which i might stay away from due to poor performance and which generally are the more accepted. But if even such generalities are pushing the rules too much we can omit that bit.

Where can i learn about modding roms? Usually i find im doing the same things to the roms i download, remove bloatware, install apex, install my own calendar and other widgets... If im already removing the differences then why bother changing roms since they are the same?

Just searching the forums, dude. I had to do all my own legwork learning how to decompile .apk files, how to then tweak/edit them, then recompile them... Along with how to use smali/baksmali. There are a bunch of tutorials out there in the Theme/App section, as well as the development sections.
Just start somewhat small; do some searches for "APK Edit" or "APK Manager". That should give you something to start with. Once you have a grasp of that, you'll find other stuff just ends up in your lap as a result.
Edit to add: as a result of what I've picked up, I've found I prefer Samsung stock firmwares that I tweak to my own liking over other ROMs.

Well back to the root question: Main difference between the many, many different versions of stock ICS. What kind of stuff do they change? Whats so different between WXLP7 and LPDFG, for instance?

Unfortunately, Samsung doesn't publish changelogs. So the only way to know is to try them both out yourself...
Or I guess you could wait until someone who already has tried them both out and noted all the changes reads this post and responds.

I think he was asking about the overall firmwares, and not specifically the modem.

I was kinda hoping for the latter since my unexperienced eye didnt notice anything doing the former.
Didnt know sammy didnt provide changelogs, that kind of sucks. Oh well, was worth a shot i guess.
Guess this thread wont go anywhere since theres no tangeable proof one way or the other of any differences. Thanks for the patience with me anyways XD

[Brain Dump] Is it just me??

If you look at my signature, I'm still running Bionix Fusion 1.1 (JI6 build).
Vibrant development has taken off lately, given the recent leaks of different builds in such a short period of time (JK2,JK6,JL1). Ive pretty much flashed all the major ROM releases, including Gingerclone and Nero, and I find myself unsatisfied.
I always find myself reverting back to JI6 and I cant put my finger on why. Granted, I'm not as caught up in the goose chase of staying current as some others may be, but for the sake of keeping up with the forum/development and enjoying new mods/themes/features, you would think it would behoove me to upgrade to a current build. Yet I still cant bring myself to commit.
Now, IMHO these ROMs based off of leaks are very very good stuff, but still not as stable (by that i mean as smooth as silk) as previous builds, and they tend to be a bit buggy. I think this is a major factor for me.
It could also be that I currently have my phone setup EXACTLY the way i want it (theme/appearance, modifications), and I dont want to have to go and dig around for everything for the newer build. Yes, its laziness, but what can i say.
There are things out there that are available for newer builds that are not for older builds, but i still dont feel the trade-off is worth it.
Does anyone else feel this way, or am I now old-fashioned??? Like you just reach a point when youre reallly happy with your phones setup, combined with getting just a little exhausted with the constant changing? Dont misunderstand, this is not me wishing that development would stop. Hell no. Im talking about that feeling you get when you dont have the energy to upgrade on such a constant basis, even though you want to keep up with the crowd (the forum)
you need justification for your setup?
wasted space.
My 2 cents, the reason why there are so many new roms are because of the leaks. For the JK2,JK6,JL1 - These are just Modems not the actual roms.
You can upgrade your phone to the newer modems without having the need to do a complete install or mess up your themes. Just so that you know, these new modems are supposed to give you better reception & Improve GPS performance.

Hey, i have an idea....EVERY time i think about posting I will PM you, and I will ask you if you personally are interested in what im going to post, and if it meets your seasoned standards.
Piss off with your pitiful, embarassing internet ego. As mad as your post made me, as im typing this, all i can think about is how much better my life must be than yours, considering that i dont have to gutlessly cyber-bully people on forums to compensate for the alienation i experience in the real world. Flag me for flaming, i wont lose any sleep, pal.
Attend the "Town Meeting" tomorrow, you may learn something. I personally am not attending, and its because of members like you. Members who have been around for a while and break every forum rule, yet never get disciplined and probably never will. I dont care how many posts you have, or how much you contribute, no one should be immune to discipline. Yet, somehow, dicks like you are allowed to roam free with no consequences. Im simply trying to start a relevant discussion, and instead of easily passing over it, you come in and immediately start trying to derail/bellittle it. do you have ANYTHING better to do?

However, Original is supposed to be for original development that's not just a rehash of stock firmware or apps (CM7, MIUI, etc...). However, the moderator obviously doesn't know this himself, making it just a divided forum, one with some stuff and the other with some more. There's no rhyme or reason to it.
The essential is one is original the other takes bits from others and rebuilds .
In theory that is as all seem to borrow bits .

It's frowned upon because a lot of developers have been offended by this exact kind of thread. You didn't ask for suggestions - you asked "What IS the best ROM". The best ROM is the one you like best, after trying them all for yourself. Only a person that has tried every single available ROM can actually tell you what they honestly think is the best, and even then it's subjective - it comes down to what YOU want from your ROM, not someone else.
As for reporting this, I did so in the hope that a mod would close the thread. It wasn't a personal report against you - just the thread and its ilk.

ROMs poll

I've been on unnamed for a while and cognition before that. I came from Cognition on the Captivate, so it's obvious I prefer a mostly stock ROM. Both of these ROMs are no longer supported though, so gathering opinions on where to go. If anyone suggests something please say why. Thanks
ShoStock is still getting updates.
My favorite is villainrom 3.0 hellraised with the latest version of the siyah kernel
CyanogenMod is pretty nice, its my first non-stock rom. The only thing I miss is the stock Samsung alarm clock. Its worth a try for a day or two at least.

These kinds of thread are really a gray area for us.
On one hand, there is nothing wrong wanting to get user's opinions. For somebody who is unsure, getting experience from others about what is good and what is bad can be really useful.
On the other hand, you can't just ask "What is the best". For one, since there are different versions of android builds, no one can just say what the "best" is. For some people, the best can be the most bleeding edge build even with broken functionality. For others, they may value stability the most; and for even more, they may want a build with tons of extra features.
So, with that said - OP: i welcome you to rephrase your question, preferably about some specific ROMs that you might have in mind, as well as what your needs are. Otherwise, i will close this down per board rules..
If you know how to flash roms and you are comfortable with it then just try them. Thats the best advice any of us can really give you. Im on sensation rom and that is still alive and a great rom, but its really up to you. ShoStock is your best bet to stay stock though.
Every quit your *****in'
ANYWAY
I've stuck with ICScrewD and Siyah for the past several months keeping up with the updates and I've been pretty pleased with my battery life and performance. I also switch to Entropy's DD occasionally. It's all stable
Try some various ones out man. Like poster above said if you feel comfortable flashing then it can become trial and error. You'll eventually find the one that suits you

I apologize if I wasn't clear when I said "I prefer a stock experience". I use BT extensively in my car, so I was looking for a MOSTLY stock ROM with finctionality being a priority, would prefer to keep TW as well. Basically, something along the lines of COGNITION or UNNAMED, but, a ROM that keeps getting updates. I wasn't trying to cause problems, but, I really don't feel like going through the 5000 ROMS for this phone; I didn't think asking other users opinions was that bad. I did post in the GENERAL section. I hope that clears it up, if not, delete if you must.

[Q] I have a few

Hello I'm a newb!
I'm sorry, but this is the unfortunate state I find myself in.
When I first found this site, what I was expecting to find was a ICS for my phone. I could not have guessed what I would learn here. I had no idea I had a counter in my phone to worry about when installing open sourced roms? Next after much more reading I am to learn the source code Google releases is not complete, and uses binary drivers? Now I am to learn about CIQ, and my phone is spying on me? Wow!
Before I say anything else I want to express my thanks to this community. This has been such a resource I had no idea that it would be when I started. Thank you!
Now on to my question that after learning about all of that I don't seem to have a clear answer to. What I wanted when I first considered getting an Android phone, was to build from source, and run my own rom. I still want this, even more so since I learned about CIQ.
1. Due to the counter on my phone
2. I am to understand multiple images that make the phone work (boot, firmware, system)
3. The binary drivers.
Is this at all a reasonable goal?
Are there more flash images that I haven't read about yet?
Would having a direct from Google rom even be desirable?
I own a stock SGH-I777, I have done nothing to it yet.
Lastly about this site:
Is there anything you think I should read about on the forums?
Any language I should know, as in what does hellraiser imply/mean?
Any Android experience you think might benefit a could be developer?
Counter can be reset and avoided all together.
Sorry I don't know much about AOSP building, but your better off starting with compiling CM and learn from there unless you are really experienced in coding.
Speaking of, the image used to not increment the counter does, or does not still contain CIQ? I suspect it does? I would like a phone at some point w/o CIQ, and fully open source. Ty for reminding me.

Ok, so I rooted my first cell phone. It would seem heimdall latest has a bug that will brick your phone. (I'm on Mac OS Lion) I used the 1.3.1 instead, and it worked fine.
I saw many more sites, and this was quite easy. The way they showed it was very complex. Since I'm new at this should I wait to try out a ICS rom till after Samsung releases their source code, and the devs have had a chance to get it stable? How complete is the open source version of ICS? There was a note on the fsf.org page that linked me over here that some of the parts were still binary. Is it still true?
I think long term I want to get away from the official releases.
Well, you came this far, might as well flash an ICS rom now. If the leaks are any indication of status, the Samsung release will be pretty stable but the included kernel is problematic because it can cause hardbricking. Besides, you want to get away from stock, and all of the big roms released thus far are pretty darn stable; I don't know anything about binary parts or any of the coding, but plenty of people have no problem running CM or AOKP. Even the Samsung-based roms all look AOSP-like nowadays because they use Apex or Nova (not many devs like Touchwiz anymore). So take your pick, they're all good roms and most look like AOSP to some extent, with a few (mainly CM and AOKP) striving for pure AOSP.
Make sure to read and follow this guide carefully for flashing stuff, and have fun!
Ok here is where I have a problem. I have no idea about half of what you said? I know AOSP means "Android open source project" by inference of another reply. I even think CWM means "clockwork mod." (don't even know what this is yet) Saw a youtube video that mentioned it.
What is hard bricking, and what should I read to prevent it? I came here for a ICS rom, and it sounds like the two trying to be most open source are my preference.

So I will. To be honest I don't see the connection between the new jargon, and development I learn in school. There is definately much to learn here. I was expecting this to be like Zaurus development from back when I was active, it's very clear to me that this is a very different beast.
Here is one, I'm sure there is other thread.

Thank you friend. I may not have my own rom at the end of summer, but I should be on my way to understanding what would be needed for one.
Well the terms I wanted are not present on that list, most of that I was familiar with. To be honest, some of it I have not seen before as well. What is hellraiser, and some of the other xda developed jargon? I do have a tab open to that part of the forums, I just hadn't made it over there yet. I started on the forums for my device, then Android OS, and lastly general. Is there any other place I should pay special attention to that would help me?

Ok? I'm not sure I understand, is there something you don't like about the aokp rom that doesn't work very well?
I want off of the carrier provided images based on personal conviction. Google's development practices smack of cathedral, as do all of the 3rd party companies. In a sense they are abusing the spirit of free software by using a signed kernel to impede (if not actually prevent) our right to modify hardware we own. Any normal user of the software provided by the community (bazaar) can only help the cause.
I plan to share what I personally learn with close friends who live in my area. The more people we liberate, the better for everyone else. I simply applaud the work done here.
You can safely ignore Phalanx's post, he's just mocking you and other new users for not reading carefully and being stupid. You're at least trying to read and understand stuff, so I don't see any reason you should be put down the way he's doing so.
Here are a couple other links I think you'll find useful (please click my thanks button if you agree!):
ROM vs Kernel
Odex vs Deodex
Make sure to read all of the links posted in the sticky at the top of this forum, too. But note that by no means is this everything you need to read.
Mind you, all this reading is meant mostly for end-users, so that we learn how to safely and smartly modify our phones. Actual original developing beyond using what's already provided by the devs is a whole different story, and I'm sure there's even more to read up on that.
Good luck, happy flashing, and if you plan to develop later down the line, good luck with that too!

Ty for all your help. I'm glad you're all so thorough, it was like peeling an onion. The more I was looking at rooting my phone, the more there was to learn. All of you have done an amazing job making this approachable to a brand new user.
Ah I don't assume anymore about what people are trying to say, not everyone is a native english speaker. So I try to be understanding.
Yup I'll be at this for a while, I'm happy to have made some introductions, and maybe some time down the road I can even hope to contribute in some small way.
From a relative noob:
Follow the directions in the " [GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!! " thread. Then pick a rom you want to try and follow the CWM directions ... after that , find a ROM you like. If you don't want to void your warranty, wait for your carrier to provide the closest thing to what you want ... but, I'm happy with my flashed ICS ROM.

Just like everyone else has said. Read read read. Search for answers for your questions before you ask on forums. U will be fine as long as u can read and follow simple directions. Good luck to u. If u haven't flashed a rom yet I would recommend aokp. Awesome rom.
