So, we saw Jelly Bean released at I/O, we heard great stuff and all but still one question remains:
When is the next Nexus phone coming? If one looks at the trend in the past years, this happens ~end of year *however* typically coinciding with the next *major* release of Android.
Since JB was just an incremental upgrade (4.1 and not 5.0),
1) do you think we will see Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) released before Christmas and,
2) do you think there will be a Nexus phone to go with it?
What say you?
I'm not sure.. but if you follow Google's pattern (2010: nexus s+gingerbread, 2011: galaxy nexus+ics) there will be another nexus and and android 5.0 announced this fall..
However, considering that JB (along with nexus 7) was just released and ICS haven't celebrate its first birthday, it's too soon for Google to announced another major upgrade..

I think we will see next Google Nexus, with new Android version, only next year at Google IO 2013.

I really don't understand why people think like this. Google pays engineers hundreds of thousands of dollars to work everyday on software improvements. Yes, Jellybean just came out...do you think that means their high paid engineers are just going to take 6 months off? No. The software is ever changing and improving daily, and when they feel it is a large enough improvement to be dubbed the next Android version..and not 4.1.1, 4.1.2, it will be so. It could happen today, it could happen next week, it could happen next year.

I'm not saying that Google must stop developing, but they need to find the right time to release their update.. I'd say Q1 2013 would be just right, enough time for both JB and N7 too settle, make some more improvements and to counter Apple's upcoming iPhone 5.. it's not about speed, it's about timing..

I would buy Nexus even with JB. That isn't the issue for me anyway. I hope the rumor for several Nexus from different manifactures would come true and we can choose at least.

I disagree. One of the best things about owning a nexus is the dev community. With 5 different Nexus devices, the dev community for each will be smaller...

Yes you are right. But if the software is one on every device would be not a biggy for the dev community. At the end more choices about build quality would be nice. Maybe it is a bold idea.....
2010 = 2.2 (May)+2.3 (Des)
2011 = 3.0 (feb) + 4.0 (oct)
2 OS versions each year.
So it'll be

(way to early for a "huge" update to push it to 5.0)

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if a new nexus doesn't come out till Q2-3 2013 just because they just announced JB and the next version probably won't come out just yet. I doubt they will launch a Nexus device without a new android version.
The nexus program is currently changing with google giving multiple manufacturers early access to next build. Current info indicates Google will begin the new strategy by releasing multiple (supposedly 5) nexus phones by different manufacturers unsubsidized next November.
You can find the original source WSJ article by googling "wsj.com: google changes tack on android" (i would post the link but i'm new and can't post links until 10 posts.
I have a feeling they will release another Nexus phone this Nov/Dec. It will probably be android 4.2 unlike 5.0 that everyone is expecting.
2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 1080p screen please
Probably when Apple unbans the current Nexus phone.

Yeah same specs as we hoped for S3
I don't think it will be 2Ghz....more likley it will be 1,6-1,8Ghz. And 1,5GB Ram. With the whole new screen technology it will take time to get 1080p with a decent battery consumption. But till the end of this year i am sure we will see another Nexus phone
Next Nexus?
I think it all depends on the legal system. If the ban on the Nexus stands up It may take awhile to make the changes needed to get around the injunction.
I think they'll release it this year with 4.2. As one of you said, 2 versions a year.

I don't think the dev community will split across devices. Let's not forget the definition of Nexus is to be a *reference platform*, meaning that:
- all hardware components are standard (OMAPx, sound and radio, etc)
- all components have all source + drivers available (no Samsung lock-down crap)
Imagine the dev community working but the user base x5, I'd say this would be awesome...
November is good but then unlikely/unrealistic to believe devices would be available worldwide within 2012. Pondering if I should get me a Galaxy Nexus for the rest of the year, then see what is on offer

Released to Galaxy Nexus middle of next month... We'll get it, 2 months after the next EVO is released...
You know, I didn't think Apple had much to be scared of.. until now. Google is innovating circles around other companies, and is making Android one cohesive experience among multiple devices and breaking consumers' images of fragmentation. This spells huge trouble for Apple which has yet to release an arguably already outdated mobile device. Playing catch-up just got a LOT harder.
As for when we'll see it, who knows. I'd be happy with even a Christmas release but not holding my breath.

Will that be the next mid range EVO (Design, Shift) or the next big dog EVO? I'm trying to make the cut off Jan 1st 2013.
I don't know if it's just me, but I had a choice to get either this phone or the galaxy nexus and I chose the EVO lte because from what I saw on the nexus forums and reviews, ICS was a little too powerful for the nexus, which causes ICS to not run as smooth as it could. On our phone, it is more powerful and can easily handle ICS. Am I off on this?

I really hope that not even a month and a half into the lifespan of our EVO LTE's that it's still considered a next-gen device!
4.1 seems to be more of an extension of 4.0, not a big jump like it was from 2.3 to 4.0. I would imagine all devices shipping with 4.0 would be able to update to 4.1 without much trouble.
If you remember, the Evo shipped with 2.1, and was updated twice. Once to 2.2, then again to 2.3. So our brand new devices should certainly be updated to at least 4.1, possibly 4.2 whenever the time comes.
What I really wish HTC would do is give us a choice when it comes time for a 4.1 update. A Sense version, or a stock Android version. How great would that be?

Well, the Galaxy Nexus is about 6 months older than the EVO 4G LTE... Specs-wise, the EVO 4G LTE was built to be faster. There should be no reason why we don't get this update. I kid when I say it'll take forever, but in all reality, it's not a full-number version release. This might be something that we see fairly soon. It's like Android 2.2 > Android 2.3.

This will never happen. Sense is HTC's bread & butter. It's the majority factor on the decision of buying the device over other devices. While it's a nice thought to think about (if you're not a Sense fanatic like myself), it's not something that we'll likely see. I myself prefer Sense over stock Android. If I want a taste of what stock Android feels like, I'll probably just buy that Nexus Tablet they announced.
Oh yeah, definitely wishful thinking. In my perfect world that would be a reality though. I'm sure that stock 4.1 will make its way to our device at some point via Cyanogen.

Coming to the end of my GS2 contract next month. Is the GS3 still worth upgrading to 5 months since its release? Is there anything else forthcoming that I should be watching out for instead perhaps?
If it comes down to it, I could quite happily continue with my GS2 for the time being. I'm thinking that in not so many months the GS4 will be released.
What do you reckon?
I would get the note 2 if I were you. It's going to be released shortly, that way you're getting the quad core processor plus 2GB of ram, that will make for a more future proof device...
Enviado de meu GT-I9300 usando o Tapatalk 2
It's definitely worth buying. It's still easily the best phone out there. Maybe the LG Optimus G might be better in a few ways, but the amount of dev work on this model will be unmatched.
I don't see any point waiting for GS4 as there is quite a long way to go before that comes out.
Well, it's not really that long if we're looking at a May release. That's 7 months after my contract runs out. Might be tempted if I can get a very good deal from my operator.
No doubt about the development scene on both the GS2 and the GS3. Seems much better than any of the similar models out there (latest HTCs etc).
Galaxy Note is out of the question. It's MASSIVE.
I think you should upgrade to s3 or wait for the note2

I was happy with my GS1. Only got GS3 as was given free by my boss. I was gonna wait for Note2. If I had a complaint it would be the WiFi acting up (losing internet connection) and over sensitive volume buttons (but that could be my gel case).

It is hard to say how future-proof SGS3 will be if you put things that way.
5 Months? New and better devices will come from different brands and types.
The question is, do you need to get one now or do you prefer to wait?
If I feel it correctly, SGS4 will come probably about in 12 months from now.
Note 2 will come in the next 1-3 months (about 5 months since SGS3 launch)
Next Nexus device? Dunno for sure but it will come also probably by end of this year.
SGS3 is the best phone out there right here right now and not 5 months later.
You could find always somet'in newer and better with time.
My opinion about the my SGS3 future-proof, it can hold on for 2 years from now without any problem
I don't think it's worth upgrading from the s2 to the s3. If i were you i would tweak the s**t out of the s2 then get the s4 when it'll be out.
I read the OP better.
If you can change the phone at little or no cost the s3 is the best choice right now. The note 2 is a nice device, but it's too big in my opinion.
The reason why I would upgrade is the 4.8 hd screen which is pretty nice, but if I compare my galxy s3 with s2 it has almost same speed

It will remain the best until someone comes out with something new. Could be Tomorrow or a week later or a month later.
You want a specific date something new from a different manufacturer will be announced in January at CES.
Seriously buy the device based on what it can do for you. If you are thinking of buying the device based on what it can do in future you are gonna be disappointed.
It's a Google nexus device. Google released it as a reference device for other manufacturers to build upon it. If you go with Google release cycle expect a new nexus next year same time around they announced nexus 10.

I think it will last until Google releases the next version. Other tablets may come out with better hardware, but after getting a taste or pure Google Android I doubt I can go back to the ****ty old versions with ugly skins over them. That's just me. I browse the web, remote desktop to my pc, and watch movies so I have a pretty defined use case.
It will be over when there is a Nexus tablet powered by quad-core exynos 5 with 8-core GPU
So I've never owned a large tablet before, I had a nexus 7 for a few months but I sold it to pay bills. I have a galaxy s3 and between that my old nexus I know I'm definitely android fan all the way. To get the point I'm thinking of buying a nexus 10 but I'm hearing about a new version coming out late February early March and there is also talks of medium sized galaxy note 8 and a slightly smaller tablet sounds awesome, so my question is should I wait for the new nexus 10? Go buy the current one from walmart, get another nexus 7 or wait for the note 8?
Aloooottt of spelling and grammatical errors I know..
The only new version I could see coming out in the near future would be a gsm sim card version. For those people who want an lte version, not going to happen in a long long time, just get over it.

More powerful? Which one? First of all, why would they if they just released this processor on this device, first tablet with it anyways. Tegra 4 or the octa are not available and they have never revised a nexus device, they are not going to re-release the same tablet with any hardware upgrade, they will only do firmware updates, new hardware will come on the next nexus device. This is an awesome device, they just got to fix some things on the display/gamma department and thermal throttling.

A bit different , because for storage all they need to do is use a larger sd card inside the same device, CPU/GPU would require a lot more changes to the hardware, and would have a lot of customers pissed like myself that waited a long time for a tablet, and to see them do this and I got mine this Christmas, would not sit well with me and a lot of people, but hey that's just my opinion, really hope they wouldn't screw customers like that, and after I dropped a lot of money to buy a nexus 7 for the wife and a 10 for me, if they go and do that these would make the last Google/nexus devices I'll ever get.

All the people reporting it are just regurgitating the original websites story and adding their own twist on it to make it sound like they've got the inside scoop. Fact: None of them know any more than the original story (if that's even true). It's typical bad circle jerking journalism. #1 reason I try to avoid almost all the Android `insider' (I'm looking at you Android Police) websites. It's hard to though when they all publish 9,245 stories a day to garner unwarranted page clicks.
So tell me if this is plausible..?
• Google leaked the Nexus 5 @ the Play Store on Oct. 18th then released the device on Oct. 31st thats 14 days from leak to launch.
• Google "SUPPOSEDLY" leaked the Nexus 10 2nd Gen @ the Play Store on Oct. 28th if you count 14 days from the leak that would be a launch date of Nov. 10th....
It makes sense in Googleese.. What do you guys think..?

I just don't understand what is so hard about posting a "tenative release timeline" or if there will ever be another pure google nexus 10" tablet. I originally purchased my first ever android device "SGS3" due to apple being so secretive about the 4s release date and tired of waiting for the next best thing. Well I feel Nexus google is doing the same thing now...so I went back to the dark side for a tablet and purchased the Ipad air 124g version. To keep things in balance on Oct 31 I ordered a Nexus 5 to replace my NoteII !
To sum it up I think google nexus would be well served as to not being so secretive about release dates.....but it is a fine line between the secretiveness and building something up and keep backing up release dates and /or release just a few with very limited supply(AKA some graphic cards for years past).
The rebooting issue happens because of chrome, just don't use chrome and you'll be golden (and frankly mobile chrome is really ****ty, it sucks in every possible way on both iOS and Android)
I doubt they'll release the next N10 any time soon, I'm starting to see the event with the 2014 N7 as a likely date for both tablets.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing but hate beating the dead horse. Some don't like to hear the truth and love to argue.:good:
My point was that they love the rumors spreading around their products, it keeps them in the news. This discussion is a great example. They'll plant the rumours if no one else does. They want people to talk and speculate about their tablet and not the newest tablet from someone else.
Why should they announce the actual release date ahead of time? If it's far away, people who need a tablet soon will buy someone else's tablet. Doesn't Apple do the same thing? I'm sure their marketing dept know exactly what they're doing.

The hype and the anxious of waiting for a new product is what makes the google product sell so well

So it might not even exist? I'm getting so tired of waiting I think I should've bought the Nexus 10 a couple of months ago. And as much as I hate Samsung, the note 10.1 2014 does look nice. PLEASE Google, don't mame me buy a Sammy. Release the Nexus 10 2 NOW!

With all the discounted Nexus 10's out there now, I hope something worthwhile is coming! I feel like I got burned buying my GNex last August, a month and a half before the Nexus 4 came out, I am forcing myself to not fall into the same trap again!
I don't think we'll get another nexus 10 until at least middle of next year. Maybe released when we get the next major android update (version 5).
The nexus 10 was quite an investment for buyers. I for one don't plan on shelling out for one for at least another year. If you keep churning out an expensive luxury item at short intervals (big tablets are not massively essential purchases for most people), then you are reducing your potential for repeat sales, whilst pissing some people off who have bought the previous model a bit later before realising a new one was being released so soon.
Only people who have money to burn are going to shell out for a new big tablet every year unless there's a major issue with their current one. And nowadays there are fewer and fewer of those people about due to the financial crisis and job markets.
It's much easier to justify with a cheap product like the nexus 7 for a greater number of people. I essentially bought my nexus 10 to replace my laptop in most functions. I still keep my laptop for updating/rooting my devices and for the very few things that i can't do on my tab but my laptop is 4 years old now and is hardly used. I have a NAS drive that has all my media stored on that can be accessed directly from my nexus/phone and whatever else. For me, this is a keeper for at least another year.

Take advantage if you can find a really cheap one to tide you over! If you buy a used one you won't take much of a hit when the next one does eventually arrive and you re-sell.

And now google is disabling the translucent menu bars in 4.4 on the current generation Nexus 10 because the current Nexus 10 can't render them properly. What the.!? All the more reason for the Gen 2 to be leaked/announced/released now. I wouldn't buy the current version..

I totally agree. I am desperate for there to be a Nexus 10 2nd generation. I'm using a first generation Nexus 7 & it is fab BUT at 16GBs it is way to low in storage (yes I DO need each & every one of those apps & games installed) & I'm desperate for a bigger screen.
What do people think the chances of them giving us a 64GB version N10 2 at release? Assuming of course that they even give us a Nexus 10 2 Generation.
