[Q] I9100GSMH no download mode - bricked at all. Black Screen - Solutions? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
i really read several topics in the xda-developers forum and tried to help myself. Nothing worked so I'm very grateful for any help of you professionals.
I've got an I9100GSMH which was already flashed with Odin and 2.3.6.
Following (stupid) steps I did:
1) tried to flash I9100XXLPQ - seems to be working but the phone got stuck at the bootloader/samsung logo after flashing
2) after that I tried I9100GXXLPN - but this didn't work anyways.
3) i did a Wipe/Factory Reset in recovery mode and deleted the cache. then I tried I9100GXXLPN - no success
4) now I tried to get back to 2.3.6 with I9100GXXLA1 and used a omap4_all PIT file. The repartitioning worked but not the flash. After that I just pulled out the usb plug, which was kinda stupid.
Now the phone stays fully black and doesn't react to any buttons, no Recovery mode, no Download Mode or anything else.
- What can I do to get back into Download mode? Does this USB jig help/work?
- Which Firmware, PIT, Bootloader, etc. would fit for my phone? (Just working - no matter 2.3.6 or 4.0.1)
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate this.
Greetings
Futuretec

If the phone shows no signs of life, only thing you can do is try a jig which realistically probably has 1% chance of getting you into download mode. Actually, I'm being generous. Probably a lot less than that. But worth a try nonetheless.
So that means you can either have it JTAG'd by a 3rd party repairer or send it into Samsung & hope they either can't tell or don't care that's it's been messed with & they repair it under warranty. Best thing to do would be to send it into Samsung/authorised repairer in the first instance, and if they're going to charge you for the repair (don't bother debating this, btw), ask for a quote. That way you can compare their price to fix it with the cost of a JTAG. Here's a JTAG repairer to give you an idea of what you're probably up for (say $100 USD incl postage to/from ?). I'm sure you'll find others with a Google search, maybe even one close to you.
Edit to add -Actually, given you ended up with bootloop after flashing the I9100 rom in the first instance, it probably wasn't that which killed it. More likely pulling the plug.

My guess would be his flashing of an OMAP .pit on what seems to be an I9100, rather than I9100G (he said I9100GSMH not I9100GGSMH).

Ahhhh yes. You're right ;-) The fine details.

is your phone under warranty

Warranty ain't covering that. Only way you get away with it is if the NAND is so stuffed they can't tell, or if whomever fixes it doesn't care/turns a blind eye.

Hello all,
thanks for your nice respones.
I learned that I have NO G-Version of it.
GT-I9100
Model I9100GSMH
I'm from Germany - anyone now where I can find a professional doing a JTAG "unbrick"? Or do you have other Solutions.
I ordered a USB Jig + Docking station for external battery loader (maybe the battery is low).
Thanks for your help!

Doubtful the jig will work, and battery low isn't the issue.
As mentioned above by oinkylicious, the issue is you flashed an OMAP .pit file meant for an I9100G to an Exynos I9100 phone.
It was probably recoverable yourself up until you did that.
JTAG or Samsung service is your only option at this point. Google for a mobile phone repair shop near you that has JTAG Riff boxes.

Had about the same issue, Odin was stuck in the middle - pulling the plug here was fatal.
USB jig for SGS2 ICS is different, won't help anyway.
Cost me around $120 for a Jtag treat that fixed the flashed data chip

Hi All,
I have a similar issue. Exactly the same phone. But I don't think I've fully bricked it yet.
Under the battery it says Model: GT-i9100, SSN: i9100GSMH
Originally Gingerbread, then I upgraded to 4.03 via official Kies firmware release.
Couple of days ago tried to upgrade to 4.04 using ODIN and got a fail at factoryfs.img. probably used the wrong firmware.
Could still get into download mode at that stage, but can't anymore. I tried to install a couple of different firmware versions of 4.04. I can still get 'added' when I connect to ODIN though.
Can somebody please help me to upgrade to either 4.04 or Jellybean? I'm willing to go fully custom, just don't know how to do it....Can I do it with ODIN? Do i need a new kernel or pit or image or anything?
Thanks heaps, look forward to any help.
Cheers,
Jackson

It won't start at all.
I've flashed I9100XXLP1_I9100OXALP1_OXA and tried to root it with cf-root-sgs2_xx_oxa_ki3-v4.1-cwm4
After the root it won't start up, it was showing SAMSUNG and the yellow triangle with a ! in it.
I've tried to re flash the XXLP1 and it won't start flashing, so I pulled the data cable.
And now it won't start.

try a usb jig but seems like its a complete brick if it will not turn, needs jtagging by the sounds of it,
can you go into download mod? flash stock firmware in download mod via odin by press volume down +home button + power.

1) You didn't read instructions... Why would you try to root a XXLP1 >> ICS << Rom with a KI3 >> Gingerbread << CF-Root ? It states in Chainfire's thread to find the matching letters and root it with the corresponding kernel... You DIDN'T bother to read.
2) Like the poster above said, try entering download mode, and flashing stock ROM again... If you can't, read >> 4)
3) You can try with a USB Jig, though i doubt it will help...
4) Seems like it's completely bricked, probably will need jtag repair, or maybe you can get lucky with warranty + samsung repair service
5) Learn to read...

@gr4ndm4st3r_bl4ck
yes, my bad
do you think that if I send it back from where I bought it and lie them that it didn't start at all, and that I didn't do anything they will replace it?
it is worth it to try or they will figure it out?
thanks
You could send it into your carrier/Samsung for repair & they might repair it anyway, but there's a much greater chance they'll charge you for it.
A jig is very unlikely to work, but for the sake of a few dollars is worth a try.
Do a search for JTAG repair on here/Google (here's one to get you started). This will probably be cheaper than having it repaired by Samsung/whomever does their repairs in your country.
Which option you choose is obviously up to you.
As MistahBungle said, you could try taking it to samsung and they might repair it under warranty,no questions asked...then again, they could charge you more likely than not... If that happened to me I would take the phone to samsung as i don't trust those shady guys doing jtag repairs... they fu** something up, you lose warranty, you get left without a phone...my 2 cents

[Q] [HELP] ClockWorkMod backup bricked my phone??

hi everybody!
all the steps below were taken from galaxys2root.com as well as the files
i have i9100 with a stock rom 2.3.4 (ki4) (and 1.4gb of free memory-maybe that was the problem).
yesterday i rooted it (everything was fine) and then i installed CWM recovery 4.0.1.4 through odin v1.85 (went fine too) and then on my way to find myself a new rom i decided to backup my current one with cwm. then i entered cwm by pressing vol-down+pwr+home and hit "backup". it backed up the system and then moved on to the data and thats where it got stuck for like an hour.... from the guide i understood that it shouldnt take more than 10 min- 15 min top so i figured that im having a problem, i tuned off the phone by pressing pwr button and turn it back on, then the phone got stuck on the sgs2 screen with the triangle so i turned it off again----> this time it didnt came back on, and not responding to download mode neither to polling battery out or not even by connecting to usb and charger- just dead!
how is it possible? and what should i do to bring it back to life? (and myself)
thank you very much(please help...), and sorry for the long text and the bad english
do you have usb jig with you?
i assume you brick your phone.
read my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402286 carefully. anyway, usb jig will not harm your device
No download mode = try jig. Jig doesn't work = JTAG repair by 3rd party repairer (cheaper option) or JTAG repair my Samsung (more expensive option).
thank you,
no dont have one but i ordered from ebay.
is there a chance that my battery died and as a result of the two my phone wont respond?
Possible but highly unlikely. I guess you might as well try a new battery, at worst you'll have a spare when you get the phone repaired.
Fairly common problem go to forum xx download something and follow the instructions dont work go to a totally different forum and ask why ???
CWM 4 very old .
vol-down+pwr+home and hit "backup why ??? thats download mode
My guess would be wrong instructions/firmware .
The other question to ask is it a i9100 or a different version .
jje
i really hope thats the problem, im going to a friend now to try with his battry.
but really how is it possible that my phone is bricked when i didnt even try to flash a new rom, and more than that it happened in the backup process when all the cwm does is a copy operation... so what really had happened?

Jig <=1% chance of getting you into download mode, JTAG = 100% chance of fixing it. Other options = 0.

I should say jog = 50% chances of getting into download mode. JTAG is more like a solution for hard brick(totally unresponsive, bootloader totally mess up, brain system totally corrupted).
Base on my understanding, getting yourself a hard brick is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. If you go through zedomax(galaxys2root.com owner), he mentioned that he flashed all his android device countless time. All he got is just a couple of soft brick. Never a hard brick. Don't waste your money first. Invest on a cheap usb jig which only cost around 2 dollar, compare to JTAG services which cost 50 dollar.
If usb jig doesn't work, try to go for warranty , see whether they charge you or not. If warranty doesn't cover you and cost less than 50 dollar to repair, go for it.
Only go for JTAG if every effort above don't work.
Warning: JTAG is just a service that reinject Samsung firmware into your device. If your phone has hardware failure, I don't think they can help. Unless they provide hardware repair now. If you wanna be sure, email or call them up to see if they provide hardware repair/replace as well, just in case it is a hardware failure cases.

i know its a very rare situation but it happened. I've tried the jig and it didnt work, then i decided to send it back to the store and they told me they have sent it to the manufacturer, now im waiting...

[Q] Galaxy s2 GT-I9100 Complete dead

Dear Forum members i am new to this forum please help me to boot up my Phone :
After rooting using odin i have installed custom rom all working fine later tried to install another using odin selected .PIT file & re partition was checked in the middle Odin stopped responding disconnected the phone & phone stopped as attached image later battery empty. Now its completely dead no light no logo no boot sign tried to enter download mode, recovery mode, connecting to pc using kies, Odin nothing working.
Please help me to get the phone back to working
Thanks in advance
Unfortunately because you played around with the PIT file unless advised means that your phone is bricked.
Since you cannot get into any mode at all, the only method that might work to fix your phone is a Jtag device.

Thanks for quick reply. can you please tell me where Jtag is available in India people who do it?
Thanks in advance.
For the first time i used forum and its really helpfull.
If he's still getting the screen that he posted in his first post, then it does NOT mean it is bricked beyond repair. In fact, you should be able to flash using Odin while that screen is up.
I've only ever seen people get that screen when they either flashed an I9100G ROM or firmware to an I9100, or the reverse. (flashed an I9100 ROM or firmware to an I9100G)
OP, I'd make absolutely sure you are flashing a ROM or firmware that is meant for your model of device.

Oh. Well, if it's completely dead now, and no longer shows that screen, than Cosmic Blue's statement is probably true. JTag it is.
Use Google to try to find a repair shop near you that offers this service. If you can't find one close to you, you'll probably have to mail it off to a shop that does it.

Customer service may not know but if you talk to the technician he will know but may not want to do it as they will not make as much money as replacing the motherboard.
If you check the service manual that are posted on in this forum. one of the steps before replAcing the motherboard is using jig then jtag before you replace MB.

[Q] [SOLVED] i9100 USB issues?

Hi there,
A few days ago, I noticed my i9100 (international s2) was barely charing anymore. It would take ages (hours, literally!) to charge to 20 percent while off, and when on, it would even drain slowly while being charged. I switched to another charger and I had the same problem.
I decided to downgrade to official firmware (was on cm10.1 before), but noticed my computer wouldn't recognise my phone anymore. It wasn't a driver issue, because my ubuntu, my netbook and my tablet wouldn't see it either. In fact, there wouldn't even be a USB-debugging icon on my phone. Windows does, however, make the connected sound and my phone does charge.
I reinstalled stock firmware via CWM, but still nothing. So I'm sort of afraid this is a hardware issue. I'm looking to sell this phone within a month (I've bought a Nexus 4!) but I want it to be in working order.
Do I need to contact Samsung, or is there anything else I could do myself?
Thanks in advance.
edit > Additional info: Windows tells me my device has malfunctioned.
Replace USB flex in phone. If it's still under warranty, reset the flash counter & send it in. If there's no warranty, you can do it yourself. You can buy the parts cheaply online (Google search) & do it yourself, there are threads on here & a Google search should yield the info you need to change it. If you're not confident enough to do it yourself, buy the parts online & pay a local mobile shop to do it.

I'm still under warranty, so that shouldn't be a problem. I just wanted to confirm it was a hardware problem.
I'll try to reset the counter, then call Samsung. Thanks!
@lasic, Thanks, but since there also is a USB connectivity problem, I don't think a new battery will fix that.
Edit -> However, I've encountered a new problem. Because I've flash a CWM flashable ZIP, even my current ROM knows it's been tampered with. I can't use ODIN to flash an original factory image from sammobile.
Sounds a lot like it given what you described. Make sure you backup before you send it in, 'authorised repairers' are notorious for wiping phones/flashing new stock firmware regardless of what's wrong with the phone

Yeah I'm prepared for factory resets I'll make sure to back-up all my photos and carbon backups as well
When I try to connect my phone to Odin, it just doesn't see it, so it's the same problem. I don't think I can use USB to flash a stock rom anymore Right now, I've flashed a stock rom using CWM, rooted it, used TriangleAway and will probably unroot it after. But Samsung would be able to see the traces (such as wrong recovery, maybe more.
Ahhh OK. Perhaps flash a stock rom with Mobile Odin ? Also, there used to be CWM flashable stock roms somewhere in the General section. Or...Perhaps if there's an stock Kies/OTA update available, if you use that it should unroot your phone/give you stock recovery back.

[HELP] phone wont start

First of all, I wanted to say hi to everyone here and thanks for the great forums
Secondly, as to the first question that pops up in mind, yes I did read the forums and I did google the problem and as a last resort, I need help!
I was trying to flash the original firmware from sammobile with odin 3.07, I wiped data/factory reset, formatted system and did everything and I went to the download screen, started odin and everything was just fine...only problem is that the flashing on odin took about an hour:
first it went fast but then it got stuck where Kernel was written above and it got stuck for about an hour and I just left it there and went doing my things...but I came back and a big red Failed was written on Odin...I checked it out and it turned out the phone was disconnected from PC...so I freaked out and turned off the phone...I thought I could go again or flash another ROM or something...but my phone won't start...it doesnt respond to any key or combination I try...I cant get into download mode or recovery mode and the phone doesn't start at all.
so my question is, did I hard brick my phone ? if so, then what do I do ?
if not, then also what do I do...
NOTE: before I started flashing the battery was 100% charged.
EDIT: I have Samsung Galaxy S II I9100

thanks for the reply! I edited the post.
Ok its probably bricked. You need to try king rats hotboot method,or see if a jig will work.
Failing that its jtag or even new motherboard.

okay I tried kingrats hotboot and it didnt work.
I dont have a jig and I know I can get one from ebay but I wanted to ask, whats the probability that it would work in my situation ?
I had the CyanFox 4.4 before I tried to flash the new firmware but it I wiped all data out before flashing on odin so I'm guessing that info doesn't help at all.
What's the chance of a jig working ? About 0.0000001%. But try one anyways, won't cost you anything other than a few bucks. It's either a JTAG (though again a fair chance that isn't possible) or more likely a motherboard replacement.
okay then another question, if I connect 3 x 100 ohm resistors with a micro usb can it replace the jig ?
like in this video: search "Revive bricked Galaxy S2 I9100 using USB Jig [HD].mp4" in youtube first result.
Yes. Any of those tutorials should enable you to make a functioning jig if you do it properly. Can't speak as to whether they work or not myself given I bought one though.
ok ill give it a try.
also, a friend said there's something called a "special box" that runs a "simulator" on your phone and copies the firmware installed data on the phone's sd card...and once its done you can start your phone as if you had flashed the rom with odin. is such a thing possible ?
Never heard of it, unless he's referring to a 'RIFF box' which is used to JTAG a phone. If you can find someone who will try a JTAG on the basis of 'no pay if it's not JTAG'able', you might as well, even though it probably won't work. A motherboard replacement is almost certainly the only fix in your situation.
I wouldn't be forking out money for a RIFF box if I were in your situation given that it won't work anyways, it costs a lot more than paying someone else who already has one/knows how to use it, and you'll likely never use it again.

he was referring to the RIFF box. I'll try with a jig and see if it works if not motherboard it is then.
thank you for your help
Good luck. You're welcome
how much does a motherboard cost, by the way ?
Variable. A service centre won't sell you a new one without them replacing it for you, so you're at their mercy with regard to how much they want to charge you for labour. Or you can source 2nd hand one from a 'donor' phone (say a phone with a broken screen) and either swap the boards yourself or pay a local mobile repair shop (who isn't a Samsung service centre) to do it which will still probably be much cheaper than the new board/service centre option.
Search online for 2nd hand boards (the usual places; eBay/Swappa/Google search).
and does changing the motherboard change the imei ?
If you put a 2nd hand board in, yes. If a Samsung service centre gives you a new board, in most countries the device will keep the current IMEI. Either way, it makes no difference in your ability to use the phone I.E it will work normally in either case.
can I replace the motherboard with other galaxy s2 models or does it have to be the exact same model ?
mine is Galaxy S II GT-I9100T
The I9100 & I9100T are exactly the same phone except for slight difference in radio output, I'm not aware of anything on the motherboard that's different in either model. Everything I've ever seen on here over the past two years says on many networks you'll need to use specific modems with an I9100T (I.E the modems which were bundled with stock roms released by carriers who specifically sold the I9100T) in order to get the best connectivity, which has suggested the difference is in the modem firmware only.
So, to the best of my knowledge, you should be able to use a motherboard from an I9100 in a I9100T. That may or may not be the case though.
Edit - OP - Edit the title of your thread to that of the duplicate thread which was closed by mods & make another post to this thread along the lines of your OP in that closed thread.
I posted what I tried for future reference.
