Anyone else notice that if you have exchange email sync disabled but calendar enabled, the calendar does not sync automatically?
I don't want to sync my exchange email but definitely need the calendar. I have to constantly hit the sync button in the calendar app for it to update. This type of setup worked fine on my Captivate running CM9 nightlies. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Edit: This post should probably be moved to the Q&A section. Sorry about that.
I'll check this out on my phone, however, I've noticed in general that the calendar sync on android is suspect.

Mine sync'd almost immediately with email sync disabled. I would say within 60 seconds. I did notice that the widget didn't update until I opened the actual calendar application for my first test. I'm testing out when the widget updates as I type this.
How are you testing your calendar? I'm creating a new appointment on Outlook (desktop app) then making sure Outlook has updated Exchange before I am checking my phone.
I then look at the widget on my home screen first. (1x3 stock widget). Then go into the Calendar application.
I so far am noticing a delay of the widget updating, so far at 2 minutes, no widget update if I don't go into the actual Calendar App.
UPDATE: Widget does update, but there must be a refresh interval (so it doesn't drain CPU and battery) Took about 2.5 minutes for the widget to update.

Also, removing a Outlook event from my phone takes about 60-120 seconds to reflect on the Exchange server, about what I would expect.

Pretty much testing like you. New meeting on my outlook calendar does not show up in the calendar app or widget until I hit the "sync" option. I've waited hours before...
strange I'm not having those problems.
Without giving away too much information in a public forum (feel free to PM me if you'd like)---
What version of exchange are you using? Do you know the architecture of the Exchange deployment? (Front-End & Back-End servers, etc?)

Not sure on the exchange setup... however I can tell you that it works just fine on CM9. I think it has something to do with the Samsung exchange stuff :\
Like I said, I'm not having the same problem as you. I am running stock Sprint S3 image. Maybe it's a carrier thing?

While I am using BetterBatteryStats to determine how I can improve my Galaxy S II's battery usage, I notice 'StartingAlertService' (Calender) is on the top of the list on Wakelocks list. Does anyone know what is 'StartingAlertService'?
Ask here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Maybe an event in Calendar!
I have the same issue with StartingAlertService, it is the Calendar but not sure how can it be addressed.
Alternatively, any good calendar apps, maybe little less trigger happy than the stock one, that anyone can recommend?
Can't post in that thread, I have yet to hit that absurd 10 posts rule
My battery usage is definitely better during weekend because my no meeting in my work Calender. Maybe I should not sync my work calander during weekday and see whether the battery usage is a lot better.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Hmm, please post whether turning off sync for the Calendar did improve your stats. Mine is off and still that service is on top of the list.
startingalertservice in my phone consumed 93% of my battery after 7 hours usage. i found out this problem caused by .com.android.mms.
so i uninstall mms.apk tru systemappremover after i had installed GoSms. after all, the problem solved.
startingalertservice drain.

Hi Emptyara,
I have the same issue... (with drain by startingalertservice).
How did you found out it had to do with MMS? Can you guide me through your resolution process? before I simply remove apps which might not solve anything...
Thanks!!
i'm having the same problem. it just randomly starts (switching from two or three diff roms).
i'd have great battery life and etc, and then all of sudden, wakelocks goes all whacky and StartingAlertService is the main problem.
i've already played with calendar notifications and monitoring the mms service now.
anyone else?
Same issue here, even though I've stopped using the Calendar, and turned off both syncing and notifications. But I checked today and Calendar had a partial wakelock of about 14 minutes when my phone should have been otherwise asleep.
I don't think it is related to MMS. I think some people are getting "StartingAlertService (.com.android.mms)" whereas I'm getting "StartingAlertService (Calendar)"
I also think it might be specific to the Samsung version of Calendar since I don't see any posts about this except in the Galaxy S II forums. I just uninstalled the Calendar with Titanium Backup and will see if this stops the issue.
Appreciate any other feedback on this.
Uninstalling Calendar did work, in case anybody was wondering. No more partial wakelocks from StartingAlertService (Calendar). Of course, now I don't have a Calendar app, so there's a trade-off. I might try an alternative calendar app like Jorte or something, but right now I don't use the calendar much.
Got the same issue here.
Do you guys have EasyProfiles installed?
Bcause I set up EasyProfiles to switch to the "Meeting"-Profile, when there is a calendar entry.
Maybe this is what causes that?

Another possibility:
I noticed, that syncing with MyPhoneExplorer is not the best thing since either Lotus Notes, MyPhoneExplorer or Android itself does not handle recurring events properly.
This led to events showing up today that have been in the past.
I deleted the whole calendar data and synced again and they were gone, but my colleague has the same issue.
I'm also suffering from this problem.
If anyone finds a remedy, please tell me.
Will removing MMS really help here? (the wakelock is because of the calendar, not MMS).
If it says Calendar, then remove Calendar (not MMS). I never used the Calendar much, so I just keep it uninstalled these days.
Just noticed my battery had dropped more today than usual.
Checked BBS and noticed "StartingAlertService" calendar taking 13m 49s ie 9.7% in terms of wakelocks, over a 2hr 22min period.
I do use, and need the calendar. Sync is set (via autosync account activator) for every 2 hours -- but it's been like this for a while without me seeing this process pop up.
Hopefully a one-off but wish I knew why it was there...
Everything else is done at the 1.5 min or less (twitter, google search, activity, google+)
The only thing dfifferent about this morning is I enabled gps and used maps briefly....
I also have one appt today with an alarm set (though that's a couple of hours ago now)
I think it is the appointment notifications that set it off (hence the "starting alert"), and not the sync or anything else. You can turn off notifications in the Calendar app but I think any events in Google Calendar with reminders will still get through. A Calendar without notifications is not that helpful to me anyway, since the whole point is to remind me of all the stuff that I forgot. Anyway you can try clearing all your alarms and see if that helps.
What firmware are you using? I think this is a specific problem with the S II (since I don't see any other forums talking about it) so I was hoping Samsung would fix it in one of their newer versions.
I have also identified startingalertservice as the source of my wakelock and battery drain.
*Every time there is a meeting the phone will stay awake for an half an hour or so.
*The awake starts with the time when there should be meeting reminder not when the meeting does actually start.
*It only happens when I have calendar app notification settings set to Off
I will try to investigate further but if you have any ideas then let it out.
About my background:
latest leomar75
touchdown for Calendar and e-mails
tasker for automated silent mode when in meeting
internal calendar for tasker, that annot read TD calendar (notifications off)
I have tested and turning touchdown and tasker off does not fix the wakelock but turning off calendar does.
Anything new about this issue? It drives me crazy when calendar sucks my battery....
Any tips how to avoid it?
Thank you
After hours of digging, I did not found an solution so I came up with workaround.
If Tasker detects notification *:*mins* (meaning Touchdown calendar reminder) from app Touchdown, it will just kill the app calendar.
I think you can use same approach with diferent scenarios.
I have the same problem. If i don't set a reminder for a event, there is no problem. The wakelock start when a reminder alarm is about to ring, and then it stays wakelock for a long time and drain battery. I9100 is the buggiest phone I ever owned. Now I wonder what will happen when ICS is introduced to I9100. I think there will be more bugs in the Touchwiz applications.
I found the source code that call the wakelock of StartingAlertService here.
I am not a dev so I might look at the wrong thing, but I can see that in order for the wakelock to be released, there are 2 IF statements that have to be satisfied. I think the problem might be there. Any Devs here would like to share any insights??
With the latest pq and p7 i had an issue syncing phone calendar with exchange (you don't see exchange calendar entries)
No way to get my task nor my agenda.
Anyone found a solution for this?
ps. it it possible that nobody use exchange ??? this is sound very strange to me.....
hi
same problem for me

To make it work (for me atleast)
1. remove the whole exchange account
2. Turn on auto-syncing across your phone.
3. add back your exchange account, but this time make sure on the initial account setup that you select an auto syncing interval (anything except never). I used every hour.
4. Wait a while and it should show up in calendar (it did for me)
I had the same issue and that fixed it, many thanks.

Thx man, solved the prob for my i9000 too !!
I have 3 email accounts set up on my S3: An Exchange account and an IMAP account, using the default email client; and a gmail account using the gmail app. Frequently the whole IMAP account gets deleted. The exchange and gmail accounts are unaffected. This seems like a major bug. Has anyone else had the same?
The sync frequency for the exchange account also doesn't appear to work properly. I originally had it set for push email between 7:30am and 10pm and manual only outside those times. Sometimes it would still sync emails when it should be set to manual. I've since changed the settings to be check only four hourly during the day but it often (but not always) seems to behave as if still set for push email. Anyone else noticed this?

Do you have a spamfilter installed on your mobile?
It looks like another client may be downloading the email-account through POP3 and not have the option to keep the emails on the server checked.
At least that usually is the reason for emails disappearing when my customers complain about such problems...

S3's Exchange looks to be broken. I've seen very high battery drain of the exchange service even if the account was completely disabled, but it would go away as soon as the account was removed.
Your mailserver's policy may require an open data connection at all times (at least I _THINK_ there is such a policy option), mine seems to work fine in pull mode.
(I'm using a modified (added SMTP) Z-Push to provide Push-Email from IMAP-accounts even tough the german carrier (T-Mobile) has blocked mobile Email access)
Thanks for the reply. It's not just the emails that are being deleted, it's the whole account. It disappears from the email program and doesn't show in the accounts and sync page either. I've had to re-enter the account settings twice now. I've seen one report of something similar on another forum.
I understand what you mean about POP but that would only delete the emails not the account. The account doesn't support POP anyway, only IMAP.
It is also happening with me. The third email account I have configurated, which is Gmail, is indeed being deleted after a couple of hours.
Any idea on this guys?
No one facing this same behaviour?
I don't know if this has fixed it, but since I did this my email account has survived longer than before. It's only about a week though so could still go at any minute
In Setttings->Accounts & sync->Samsung Account->Device backup I disabled auto backup (which seemed to be failing any way). I'm not sure if it conflicts with having the google back up enabled as well. Since then my email accounts have survived. Fingers crossed it stays that way

I've deleted Samsung account and now it seems everything is fine with my third email account (which is Gmail ).
Mates,
The only thing that duly worked was reseting the phone. Now everything is fine and no more deletions of my third email account.
I am using the S Planner and have recently upgraded to 4.1.1 Earlier on ICS when I used to enter the Add Event full settings (on the quick add event it never came though) anyway I used to add an event and the default 5 Mins Notification Reminder used to place itself in the Event on my Calendar.. However Since the upgrade I need to manually click on the + sign next to the reminder.. Why is this so? Is there a work around? I am using the local 'My Calendar' calendar in the S Planner.. I have synced it to my email calendar as well but I have almost no calendar entries on my email.. Just a few work related ones..
Is there anyway for it to automatically add a 5 mins before notification reminder on all the events I create in the local My Calendar in the S Planner? It is quite a pain as I seem to be missing calendar entries since I forgot to add the reminder manually..
Please Help me out! Thanks in Advance!
It is so sad to see nobody is bothered with this problem, because this guy's post is unanswered for almost a month. Is nobody using reminders? I just don't understand. Dumbest stupid failure of the new firmware which urges you to seek for calendar replacement app.
Ok enough emotions. I am also suffering from this. Searched here and there all over. Nobody cares. Nobody even seem to notice this perfect calendar upgrade.
Does it make sence to write to Samsung?

Posted this issue even earlier in another thread. Same no reaction. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33900623&postcount=2112
Haha I gave up on the Stock rom and have since moved onto Cyanogen Mod 10.. I don't have NFC, WIFI Direct, Micro SD Card recognition, or any of the motion features from Samsung like Swipe to Capture a screenshot or Direct call from Contact/Message but I have 4.1.2 and a smoother phone and a slightly better battery life.. I am thinking of selling the S3 and buying the Nexus 4! Since the Jellybean upgrade was absolutely rubbish on the S3!
Why on earth this all is so so sad? Why do we need to deal with such shameful faults of the OS of one of the most expensive smartphones in 21st century. The level of this bug or problem reminds me of Windows 3.1 times...
Almost one month later and no solution to this. Such a simple thing to fix but a very annoying bug to deal with. I will be finding a different calendar.

use google calendar

I found a different solution to this! But it will only apply if you use your email address as your default calendar and don't use the local "My Calendar".. Go to your Calendar settings in your Web browser and activate the default reminder time to whatever you want.. Also ensure on your phone that your Calendar is set to Sync with your gmail account on which your calendar entries exist.. Automatically the default reminder time gets placed into your newly set calendar entry without you manually having to do so..
I read what I wrote and its probably a bit confusing but ill be glad to help anyone out if they haven't quite understood! Also sorry I couldn't explain better as I am in a bit of a rush now..
I tried this, but it didn't seem to make any difference on my phone. Any time I make an appointment on my phone it still defaults to no reminder.

Are you sure when you add an Event/Task it shows your gmail address? rather than "My Calendar"?
In addition to that.. You could also go into your settings in the S Planner and then the option Calendars and un-select "My Calendar" and all other calendars you are not using except the one synced with gmail..
Found a solution
Hey,
I found a workaround : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/tutorial-how-to-disable-s-planner-t3131379
Has any of you ever experienced this?
I have started using my V30 a few days ago. I set up Gmail widgets 3x3 on 3 separate homescreens, each referring to different inboxes of different accounts.
Two times over the past couple of days, the widgets (which worked fine after set up, showing the contents of the inboxes) showed 'tap here to setup', forcing me to choose the appropiate account & inbox folder again. One time, even the extra homescreens were gone altogether (reducing my # of homescreens from 5 to 2).
What gives? I didnt update anything in the mean time, im on 7.1.2. & using the stock launcher.
Also this morning Alarm Clock Plus didnt go off, not sure if its related.
Same thing happens to me on my pixel 2. Only for my non Gmail accounts though. 3 Gmail widgets are fine, 2 others (Hotmail and Yahoo) get reset daily (possibly on reboot).
---------- Post added at 01:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:51 AM ----------
For the record I just updated the Gmail app and the problem went away.
