I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III while on vacation. I didn't really want a US model, since I already had a Galaxy S II and the only compelling reason I would upgrade was for the quad core Exynos.
Well here I am back States-side, and it's been working fine for a week or two. Last night I suddenly lost the ability to connect to WiFi networks.
Basically I can search for a connection, it will show up and say it's "Saved," but it will not connect, even if I manually choose the option. If I choose "Forget" and reconnect, it will connect briefly for a few seconds and promptly disconnect again.
I've tried the usual steps of rebooting, checking my network, etc. I've gone as far as reflashing the firmware which doesn't seem to fix my issue.
I have several other devices and none of those have issues connecting to my wireless network. I've tried a couple different AP products, including an Apple Airport Extreme, a Linksys WRT-600N, and a bunch of really old APs with a different chipset manufacturers, none which seem to work.
For OS, it's currently on Android 4.0.4 with the stock Samsung TouchWiz interface, no carrier customization.
Since returning/warranty for this device is out of the question, I am looking for a possible solution to my issue. I am not a big Android user. I used to be big on Symbian, and now I'm mainly an iPhone user. I have an Android phone to keep up with the times, so to speak. Is it possible I'm missing something? Could I have changed a setting that would cause my wireless issues?
Thanks!
(Tried searching this topic, didn't turn anything up)
I'm having the same problem too. Everything connects except for the S3. If I reboot the router it works for a day or so then the problem re occurs.
If you get disconnected meaning there's interference in the frequency range, you could change the channel so it doesn't overlap with your neighbors' or your other APs, remember any AP operating on the same channel or nearby channels in range is likely to cause signal to interfere with another AP's wifi signal.

I had similar problem. A factory reset fixed it.

I tried another factory reset and I'm still experiencing this issue. I'm a bit bummed out at the moment. I can't connect to other networks either. At least I have cellular data to work with for the time being, but I expect I'll get throttled sooner or later.

I don't think it's an interference issue.
Like I said, none of the other devices have connectivity issues. I haven't really changed my wireless setup for the last 10 years. Always the same channels (with difference channels for each overlapping AP—channels 1, 6, and 11). My cordless phones all use DECT which runs on 1.9GHz and I usually have Bluetooth off when at home. As for neighbors, the distance between our homes are far enough I am never really in range of their networks.
If enabled, turn off power saving
same problem as yours. i've replaced the kernel and still testing.
I have this problem, i think it's hardware problem, just updated the f/w hasn't made it better.
Try adding your wifi manually and select correct security protocol....it resolved an issue like this on my iphone4s.

it doesn't work for the SGS3, it's a known problem, i've checked a few sgs3 and some have this problem including mine, i'm changing my unit tmr.
Has there been any temp fix for this? I've been noticing this a lot more when using WhatsApp, usually you can see the last time your contact has been on, but it only shows if there is a current connection to the internet. When I'm connected to the wireless, it'll show up but after a while, I assume the wireless loses connectivity (sort of) and it won't show the last time they were on. The thing is though, I'm able to get to any pages like normal, so it doesn't actually lose connection.
Why don't you flash a better rom~~
S3 wlan bug
Paranoid Android wlan bug
Hello all together
I need flash PA v2.1 on my SGS 3 !
I have problems with the Galaxy S3 and WLAN simply gets no connection together!
I've already tried all possible steps like Stockrom flash with Odin to the bootloader from the Android 4.0.4 to get! Because it means that even if wifi is broken, you should flash back to flash and then stockrom Paranoid! Wifi can not connect!
I count times on what I've already done everything without success:
ICS 4.0.4 STOCK
wipe data
wipe chache
wipe Dalvik
Permission fix
Flash paranoidandroid
flash gapps jb
flash hw compressor
Wlan ist broken
Then I created a backup of it.
Have again flashed back to stock 4.0.4 ics because I had suspected at the bootloader.
Ics 4.0.4 on it again as everything was wiped and the backup recorded. Again the bow
Then cm 9 installed as described
there is also the wlan bug
from CM9 paranoidandroid
still wifi bug
then back to stock and on CM10
end result
wlan goes
paranoid then flashed wireless bug
then of stock on CM9 on from there and CM10 on paranoidandroid wlanbug
from CM10 by backup still wifi bug.
I just do not know how to fixxen it.
Would appreciate your help very
fix permission reboot
've Tried all sorts of variations but always without success
Please help I really been at a loss why ?!
Am grateful for every tip!

Hello,
I became a proud owner of S3. As it usually happens to me there is the problem. Namely, from time to time problem happens to me when I'm using any web browser or anything that requires an Internet connection. Say for example Opera. I'm browsing pages and suddenly ... BOOM ... 3-5 second pause in the connection over WiFi (energy saving is off and in WiFi settings - I did it via code, in the service menu). Sometimes Internet connection breaks when I'm browsing menu or writing an SMS. For example: I browse the menu and suddenly I see - WiFi stamp disappears and after a while there is info about that phone is connected again. This is the first problem.
The phone is lying, WiFi operates in the background. When I Pick up the phone and when I'm clicking home (or power) button I get the lock screen and. .. freeze. Phone is disconnected from WiFi and only time the phone reconnects to WiFi I can unlock the screen.
On what ROM were the problems? On the Stock LF2, ROOTed LF2, Omega 7.1 - 9.0 and AOKP Milestone6.
And also it does not work automatic refresh of weather (at 1 h interval) on stock widget (the Samsung weather widget).
Sorry for my bad English.
Why couldn't you have just set your wifi to never turn off in settings, wifi, advanced.....it's practically the same thing....I wouldn't be messing around with the service menu. I would wipe data/factory reset and start again bud but this time, stay away from the service menu as it's for technicians and phone repairs etc I've not once touched the service menu....
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Premium HD app
I found the same problem ever since I upgraded to LH3 (the latest official release at this moment). The lock screen is frozen if: I had the WiFi Switched On, screen off either manually or timeout, then disconnected (say if I walk away from the wifi service area). When I press Power or Home button to wake the device, the lock screen is frozen.
Seems no freeze if wifi remains connected. Seems no freeze if wifi power saving mode is off (disabled via *#0011# (but setting won't stay if unit is power off).
Did both Cache wipe (didn't do factory reset) but makes no difference. Tried "never turn off" also makes no difference (probably because it will turn off anyway when connection is dropped)
The upgrade seems worser than before...
Any hints please...
This seems to be common but not always the same fix, my wifi constantly drops out and reconnects immediately (ruining any downloads/streaming) , i have tried the service mode, factory reset, different kernels, sleep time, static IP's, JB vs ICS Roms / Stock roms, you name it i have tried it and it STILL is doing it. Weird thing is..dont think it dropped out and reconnected when i was stock and unrooted, but as i said, tried stock rom and to no avail
Any ideas?

Hi, I am having the same problem again after not having this problem for a month or 6.
I qas having this problem on my note when on gb and now on cm10.1 but the problem never occured in an custom ics or jb rom.
So I recommend; use a custom ics or jb rom to solve this problem
Cheers,

I have this issue on my galaxy note N7000, and only recently for like a month now and on various different ROMs all JB. Any updates on what the cause could be?
Go full unrooted stock and send the phone in for warranty repair. It's the smartest thing to do if a problem persists after lots of ROM switching and factory resetting.

That's would be the smartest thing to do, indeed. But... Warranty expired centuries ago.
Any clue what is causing this not uncommon problem?

Try visiting a(not crowded) place with public Wi-Fi, and see if the issue persists.
If it starts to work fine, get a new router, preferably with 802.11n support. If you buy a N compatible router, check all of your Wi-Fi capable devices for N support, and if one of them doesn't, make them N compatible(if it's a computer, get a new N compatible Wi-Fi card or USB reciever, if it's something else, well, you can't do anything else other than buying a newer version of it with N support, or not using that device's Wi-Fi feature at all) because your router will operate at an older mode even if one of your devices doesn't support N.
Please can anyone help.
Up till a couple of days ago my s3 would automatically connect to my wifi signal at home as soon as I walked into my house, haven't changed any thing but it no won't connect until either I reboot or switch wifi off and then back on again . Tried rebooting phone which works for the first connection but subsequently won't connect again after sleep or at least the phone not being used for a while. Also switching wifi off and back on again works but as before once wi fi shuts down it won't reconnect by just swiping the screen and taking the phone off of standby.
Hope that was clear enough lol
Many thanks Ian

Reboot the modem/router and try again. If that doesn`t help press your wifi connection in settings and reinsert the password and reboot.

Yes I've found plenty of things relating to wifi issues on the phone but none specifically to this one so if anyone could help I would be grateful.
I assume you've tried forgetting the network and re-entering the details.
Also try playing with the Wi-Fi sleep policy, in the past this has caused some problems with the stability of the connection. Settings, Wi-Fi, menu, advanced.
Also it might be on the router side. Try changing the channel on the router, and if it's dual band set it to 2.4ghz instead of 5.

Back up data. Factory reset.
Update firmware.
Change kernel.
That's three possible fixes.

I cannot seem to get the WIFI Sleep to work at all. Even when set to NEVER on when asleep I can see in the battery stats that WIFI has stayed on the entire time. Any idea why this is?
can you tell us the ROM and kernel you are using (if you are using custom)? I have never had any issues with stock kernel myself.
also, did you hide your wifi SSID? in the past, it might cause some issues...
I was having the same problem, try this.. Setting - wifi - advanced - keep wifi on during sleep - Always.
I haven't noticed more battery use,

if you want another option besides backing up your data, doing a full wipe, and reloading your data, try a different kernel...easy fix that seems to fix these problems most of the time...the kernel is responsible for your wifi, gps, bluetooth, cpu, gpu, etc...so swapping it out should fix an issue like that
The short of it is, my Wifi crapped out for reasons beyond my experiences thus far.
The long of it. I flashed epinter's 07/25/2012 Nightly and everything seemed to be working nicely, Wifi especially. Then today, out running errands and dropped my Atrix in my Car Dock and attempted to turn on Bluetooth for the first time since flashing, and the device froze then restarted. Once back up, I tried turning Wifi back on, and the device froze again and restarted. Thinking maybe the radio driver went south, I grabbed epinter's 07/27/2012 build (epinter-cm10-20120727_1846-UNOFFICIAL-olympus.zip), and still no luck. Back into Recovery, Wiping everything and also factory resetting then flashing twice over again, boot up, still no wifi, and if it manages to seemingly fire up, the device hangs and restarts.
Within the last 2 hours (Been at this for about 12 hours now.) I grabbed Jokersax's build (Beta 0.1.0), wiped/reset/flash twice as I have before. Now as I take a breath I noticed that the Wifi Icon came up in the Notification bar, but when I go into Settings and Scan, I see none of the Networks around me. I looked under Advanced and noticed that my MAC Address is 'Unavailable' nor am I showing an IP address, even though Wifi is saying 'On'. Verified on my Router, my Phone is not connected to it.
Odd Side note, installed aLogcat just to see if I could catch any errors, and it is not giving me anything, that is, I am not seeing any logs through the app. Most likely an unrelated issue, but still a tad annoying.
Everything else seems in order, including Mobile Data (Able to access Web Pages, Market/Play Store, receive email, etc.). Just Wifi pretty much 'Lights are on, but no one is Home.'. Any suggestions on next steps?
We discussed this issue over in some other threads and conclusion is that it's a hardware malfunction Ur broadcom chip is burned, many people (including me) had that problem.

We're talking fastboot wipe kind of clean install? Going to give that a go as a last attempt, will post results here.
Glimmer of hope tonight, was discussing the problem with a friend, went to turn on WiFi and it actually scanned and connected for about 2 minutes before crapping out. This tells me there maybe life to the chip still. Now to get fastboot to connect and try a wipe and see what happens.

Any news on this front? I am one of the afflicted as well.
I'm having a similar issue. though my BT works just fine, no delays, no errors, no intermittance.
Wifi, I can scan for networks just fine. i click on mine to connect. it shows connecting, noting that when it says connecting the signal shows 1 bar as compared to the full set of wifi bars when scanning, i am also right next to the AP. is tries connceting for about 20 seconds or so. then goes back to saying "saved" under the SSID, other networks showing "disabled" when this happens. i originally noticed this after flashing epinters cm10. i tried flashing 37p, 36p and 30p radios with no difference.
EDIT: also want to note that i HAVE disabled the "avoid poor connections" option. and have tried setting static IP.
I flashed the same and I am unable to get my wifi to work after clean wipe, radio install or anything else that I have tried. Could software have really burned up a wifi radio????

Mine works occasionally so I don't think the radio is dead. The rom just acts like it's not there most of the time and doesn't give a mac address. Sometimes it works though after a reboot. Would flashing a different radio help? My baseband version says N_01.77.37P
I had an IP and a MAC, but no wifi internet.
Using mobile data, I downloaded Set DNS and then enabled wifi, works fine.
Now it's working but mobile data is going very very slow, it took 5min to download Set DNS.
I have a skyrocket but the "no wifi" issue is probably the same - your not getting DNS
I'm going back to CM9 for now.
+1 wifi matter under CM10
Try rebooting the router.
Experienced same issue (unable to connect, showing full bars, dropping to 1 bar when connecting and never being able to complete a connection) rebooting my router has fixed the issue. I'm not technical but it might have to do with the DNS release for addresses .. in any case unplugging my router for a bit and restarting it fixed the issue for me.
I have had this problem for awhile where my phone will not auto connect to my home WiFi, at first I thought it was due to me doing a lot of updates without wiping and was fine with that but I just updated to official LS8 and did a factory reset and it is still happening.
I did nothing but the initial login setup then left my phone when it lost the connection it would not connect again. I have to go through settings and manually select my AP and hit connect. Luckily it does save the credentials which is good since my passphrase is 63 characters long.
Anyone know what could be wrong. My cousins S II on the same software works fine connecting to my WiFi.
To reiterate I did do a factory reset and had the problem within minutes of starting the phone with zero changes other then logging into my Google account.

may be the problem is with the firmware or software you are using!!!!!
just do one thing and try if it works!
install any of the custom Rom present here which you like the most, maybe it stock or what else it doesn't matter!!!
do a full wipe in recovery and do format data, system and cache and then install the custom Rom!!!!
formatting will solve some of your basic problems related to Rom!!!
format options are available in recovery under Mount and storage option!!!
just try this once and let me know Bro!!

it's buggy I can tell.
which kernal are you using some kernal have issues with certain types of routers because either the router or the phones wifi files are not upto date or cannot communicate with each other properly.
Flash other modem.
Don't ask how, use search, plenty of info.
I finally got it working, it turns out the JB firmwares were more picky about router settings then before. I found some advice on a different problem that unexpectadly fixed it where I specified the routers channel and width to 36 and 20mhz instead of auto.
That worked but caused massive slowdown on my LAN transfers for my laptop 8.5 MB/s instead of 12.5 MB/s I did some trial and error and found channel 64 and 40mhz also worked for my phone and gave me the better speed.
Hi Guys,
i have a problem.
Since a couple of days, the wifi connection on my i9100 does not work anymore. I tried multiple roms but to no avail.
The thing is that the wifi connection is established, but nothing works.
I tried different roms, router resets (but the problem occurs on any wifi connection).
Any ideas?

Given what you've already tried, flash the 3 part firmware from Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in the General section. If you can get WiFi working on that, then reflash a more recent stock rom. If it's still working, then reflash whatever custom rom.
Might not work, but worth a shot given the 3 part will wipe your phone & might get rid of anything funky that might be causing this (don't forget to back stuff up before you flash it).
That it happens with every WiFi network you try to use is a worry though, and probably points either to something really simple we're all missing here, or a hardware issue.

I will try that when i get back from work. But i've been thinking, how is it possible that it is a hardware issue? i mean the phone still connects, something hardware related can not be partially broke right?
You'd think not (that it wouldn't be a hardware issue), but you've tried pretty much everything you can on the soft/firmware side, and it obviously isn't something on the WiFi network side unless all the WiFi networks you've tried & failed to get data flow to/from have this problem.
One thought I did have since my last post...I can't remember whether it's possible to do this on the S2 (it is on the S3/S4) as it's been months since I've even looked at mine; if you delete a WiFi connection in settings, then when you re-add it, are you able to choose between DHCP & static for IP address (might be in advanced settings if you check the box) ? If you're able to do this, choose a static IP address (I use 192.168.1.168 on my S4) rather than DHCP & see how that goes.
If that's not possible or it doesn't work, then try flashing the 3 part. Make sure you test once you've flashed it without restoring anything or installing any apps first to rule in/out something on the app side of things causing the problem.
THe 3part Odin flash did also not work. Is there a last resort solution, or is this it. Should I accept that my phone is broken

pheraps there is a problem with your modem version. Try to flash an other modem using recovery.
isnt that what i did in the 3 step flash from hopper8?
No, it's not. There's a big difference between flashing a 3 part rom & just simply flashing a modem. However...
It won't work anyway because WiFi has nothing to do with the modem (WiFi drivers are in the kernel).
Did you try what I suggested with removing the connection in phone WiFi settings & re-adding it with a static IP (presuming this is even possible on the S2) ?
If you did & it didn't work, or it isn't possible after all, take it to a service centre or local mobile repair shop.
or just buy a new phone as i did. I will keep you posted if the static ip worked.

Holy &^#(*^ that worked! a static IP worked. How is that possible?!
The short answer ? Magic
The long/non-tech answer; the connection between the phone/router is basically dropped & constantly re-established over & over & over (we're talking about once a second or less; basically looping like that) which means you've never got a stable connection long enough to get any data flow with a DHCP allocated IP.
There's threads on here somewhere that explain it better/explain 'the why' if you're interested enough to search for them; sorry, I don't have bookmarks handy & it's 5.30am here so I'm going to bed.
Important thing is, problem solved

There's threads on here somewhere that explain it better/explain 'the why' if you're interested enough to search for them; sorry, I don't have bookmarks handy & it's 5.30am here so I'm going to bed.

100% thanks, i've looked around on the forum and see now that you've helped multiple people solve this problem. That is great.
[FIX]
For the people that read this thread, fix the problem by applying a static IP for their WIFI and think "but what about all the public accespoints that do not allow static IPs?? Will i never be able to use them anymore?"
Don't worry
The problem is not so much the fact that the phone suddenly needs a static IP on certain WIFI accespoints, but that it needs an assigned DNS. Through some "magical" "unexplainable" reason some of our phones suddenly go broke in a weird way that everything works, but no DNS is assigned on specific WIFI spots (mostly WPA2 protected).
Solution:
Set a fixed DNS for all WIFI connections
Google Play has multiple apps that will apply a fixed DNS.
[edit] after this debacle i bought a second hand i9300. The first couple of days, it worked perfectly but soon it started to display similar behaviour as my i9100. That is when i started to look for other possible solutions for the problem. I soon found out that the Ip adress that was handed out by my router was off. it was 192.168.2.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx as is setup in my router settings. That is why entering a static IP solved the problem for my i9300. After restoring my router to factory settings everything is normal. My router is a Tp-link wr740N with DDWRT flashed on it. Maybe this information will also help other users
Good job digging up the DNS info, hopefully this helps people in future/they don't spend days pulling their hair out trying to fix this issue
