[FIXED] Wifi connected but no traffic - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
i have a problem.
Since a couple of days, the wifi connection on my i9100 does not work anymore. I tried multiple roms but to no avail.
The thing is that the wifi connection is established, but nothing works.
I tried different roms, router resets (but the problem occurs on any wifi connection).
Any ideas?

may be its a problem with your device karnel version. try to use stoke karnel, i had this problem once. then i flashed stock karnel using odin. then solved

Thanks for the reply, i tried it and i am now running stock. BUT the problem still persists.
This could not be a hardware problem could it? since the wifi is connected?

Ive had this happen to both my my Note 2 and my SGS2 LTE before that. With the Note 2, No matter what rom/stock firmware i flashed it never got better and I ended up selling it at a loss, but the SGS2 was made better when I flashed to stock then reflashed a Cm 4.2.2 rom. Maybe try that?

I just tried it with an CM 4.4.2 rom, that did not fix the problem. i will try to flash a 4.2.2 rom next.
Any ideas?

Given what you've already tried, flash the 3 part firmware from Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in the General section. If you can get WiFi working on that, then reflash a more recent stock rom. If it's still working, then reflash whatever custom rom.
Might not work, but worth a shot given the 3 part will wipe your phone & might get rid of anything funky that might be causing this (don't forget to back stuff up before you flash it).
That it happens with every WiFi network you try to use is a worry though, and probably points either to something really simple we're all missing here, or a hardware issue.

I will try that when i get back from work. But i've been thinking, how is it possible that it is a hardware issue? i mean the phone still connects, something hardware related can not be partially broke right?

You'd think not (that it wouldn't be a hardware issue), but you've tried pretty much everything you can on the soft/firmware side, and it obviously isn't something on the WiFi network side unless all the WiFi networks you've tried & failed to get data flow to/from have this problem.
One thought I did have since my last post...I can't remember whether it's possible to do this on the S2 (it is on the S3/S4) as it's been months since I've even looked at mine; if you delete a WiFi connection in settings, then when you re-add it, are you able to choose between DHCP & static for IP address (might be in advanced settings if you check the box) ? If you're able to do this, choose a static IP address (I use 192.168.1.168 on my S4) rather than DHCP & see how that goes.
If that's not possible or it doesn't work, then try flashing the 3 part. Make sure you test once you've flashed it without restoring anything or installing any apps first to rule in/out something on the app side of things causing the problem.

THe 3part Odin flash did also not work. Is there a last resort solution, or is this it. Should I accept that my phone is broken

pheraps there is a problem with your modem version. Try to flash an other modem using recovery.

isnt that what i did in the 3 step flash from hopper8?

No, it's not. There's a big difference between flashing a 3 part rom & just simply flashing a modem. However...
It won't work anyway because WiFi has nothing to do with the modem (WiFi drivers are in the kernel).
Did you try what I suggested with removing the connection in phone WiFi settings & re-adding it with a static IP (presuming this is even possible on the S2) ?
If you did & it didn't work, or it isn't possible after all, take it to a service centre or local mobile repair shop.

or just buy a new phone as i did. I will keep you posted if the static ip worked.

Holy &^#(*^ that worked! a static IP worked. How is that possible?!

The short answer ? Magic
The long/non-tech answer; the connection between the phone/router is basically dropped & constantly re-established over & over & over (we're talking about once a second or less; basically looping like that) which means you've never got a stable connection long enough to get any data flow with a DHCP allocated IP.
There's threads on here somewhere that explain it better/explain 'the why' if you're interested enough to search for them; sorry, I don't have bookmarks handy & it's 5.30am here so I'm going to bed.
Important thing is, problem solved

100% thanks, i've looked around on the forum and see now that you've helped multiple people solve this problem. That is great.
[FIX]
For the people that read this thread, fix the problem by applying a static IP for their WIFI and think "but what about all the public accespoints that do not allow static IPs?? Will i never be able to use them anymore?"
Don't worry
The problem is not so much the fact that the phone suddenly needs a static IP on certain WIFI accespoints, but that it needs an assigned DNS. Through some "magical" "unexplainable" reason some of our phones suddenly go broke in a weird way that everything works, but no DNS is assigned on specific WIFI spots (mostly WPA2 protected).
Solution:
Set a fixed DNS for all WIFI connections
Google Play has multiple apps that will apply a fixed DNS.
[edit] after this debacle i bought a second hand i9300. The first couple of days, it worked perfectly but soon it started to display similar behaviour as my i9100. That is when i started to look for other possible solutions for the problem. I soon found out that the Ip adress that was handed out by my router was off. it was 192.168.2.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx as is setup in my router settings. That is why entering a static IP solved the problem for my i9300. After restoring my router to factory settings everything is normal. My router is a Tp-link wr740N with DDWRT flashed on it. Maybe this information will also help other users

Good job digging up the DNS info, hopefully this helps people in future/they don't spend days pulling their hair out trying to fix this issue

Loss of WiFi connectivity

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III while on vacation. I didn't really want a US model, since I already had a Galaxy S II and the only compelling reason I would upgrade was for the quad core Exynos.
Well here I am back States-side, and it's been working fine for a week or two. Last night I suddenly lost the ability to connect to WiFi networks.
Basically I can search for a connection, it will show up and say it's "Saved," but it will not connect, even if I manually choose the option. If I choose "Forget" and reconnect, it will connect briefly for a few seconds and promptly disconnect again.
I've tried the usual steps of rebooting, checking my network, etc. I've gone as far as reflashing the firmware which doesn't seem to fix my issue.
I have several other devices and none of those have issues connecting to my wireless network. I've tried a couple different AP products, including an Apple Airport Extreme, a Linksys WRT-600N, and a bunch of really old APs with a different chipset manufacturers, none which seem to work.
For OS, it's currently on Android 4.0.4 with the stock Samsung TouchWiz interface, no carrier customization.
Since returning/warranty for this device is out of the question, I am looking for a possible solution to my issue. I am not a big Android user. I used to be big on Symbian, and now I'm mainly an iPhone user. I have an Android phone to keep up with the times, so to speak. Is it possible I'm missing something? Could I have changed a setting that would cause my wireless issues?
Thanks!
(Tried searching this topic, didn't turn anything up)
I'm having the same problem too. Everything connects except for the S3. If I reboot the router it works for a day or so then the problem re occurs.
If you get disconnected meaning there's interference in the frequency range, you could change the channel so it doesn't overlap with your neighbors' or your other APs, remember any AP operating on the same channel or nearby channels in range is likely to cause signal to interfere with another AP's wifi signal.

I tried another factory reset and I'm still experiencing this issue. I'm a bit bummed out at the moment. I can't connect to other networks either. At least I have cellular data to work with for the time being, but I expect I'll get throttled sooner or later.

I don't think it's an interference issue.
Like I said, none of the other devices have connectivity issues. I haven't really changed my wireless setup for the last 10 years. Always the same channels (with difference channels for each overlapping AP—channels 1, 6, and 11). My cordless phones all use DECT which runs on 1.9GHz and I usually have Bluetooth off when at home. As for neighbors, the distance between our homes are far enough I am never really in range of their networks.
If enabled, turn off power saving
same problem as yours. i've replaced the kernel and still testing.
I have this problem, i think it's hardware problem, just updated the f/w hasn't made it better.
Try adding your wifi manually and select correct security protocol....it resolved an issue like this on my iphone4s.

it doesn't work for the SGS3, it's a known problem, i've checked a few sgs3 and some have this problem including mine, i'm changing my unit tmr.
Has there been any temp fix for this? I've been noticing this a lot more when using WhatsApp, usually you can see the last time your contact has been on, but it only shows if there is a current connection to the internet. When I'm connected to the wireless, it'll show up but after a while, I assume the wireless loses connectivity (sort of) and it won't show the last time they were on. The thing is though, I'm able to get to any pages like normal, so it doesn't actually lose connection.
Why don't you flash a better rom~~
S3 wlan bug
Paranoid Android wlan bug
Hello all together
I need flash PA v2.1 on my SGS 3 !
I have problems with the Galaxy S3 and WLAN simply gets no connection together!
I've already tried all possible steps like Stockrom flash with Odin to the bootloader from the Android 4.0.4 to get! Because it means that even if wifi is broken, you should flash back to flash and then stockrom Paranoid! Wifi can not connect!
I count times on what I've already done everything without success:
ICS 4.0.4 STOCK
wipe data
wipe chache
wipe Dalvik
Permission fix
Flash paranoidandroid
flash gapps jb
flash hw compressor
Wlan ist broken
Then I created a backup of it.
Have again flashed back to stock 4.0.4 ics because I had suspected at the bootloader.
Ics 4.0.4 on it again as everything was wiped and the backup recorded. Again the bow
Then cm 9 installed as described
there is also the wlan bug
from CM9 paranoidandroid
still wifi bug
then back to stock and on CM10
end result
wlan goes
paranoid then flashed wireless bug
then of stock on CM9 on from there and CM10 on paranoidandroid wlanbug
from CM10 by backup still wifi bug.
I just do not know how to fixxen it.
Would appreciate your help very
fix permission reboot
've Tried all sorts of variations but always without success
Please help I really been at a loss why ?!
Am grateful for every tip!

Wifi/Radio Problems on cm10

The short of it is, my Wifi crapped out for reasons beyond my experiences thus far.
The long of it. I flashed epinter's 07/25/2012 Nightly and everything seemed to be working nicely, Wifi especially. Then today, out running errands and dropped my Atrix in my Car Dock and attempted to turn on Bluetooth for the first time since flashing, and the device froze then restarted. Once back up, I tried turning Wifi back on, and the device froze again and restarted. Thinking maybe the radio driver went south, I grabbed epinter's 07/27/2012 build (epinter-cm10-20120727_1846-UNOFFICIAL-olympus.zip), and still no luck. Back into Recovery, Wiping everything and also factory resetting then flashing twice over again, boot up, still no wifi, and if it manages to seemingly fire up, the device hangs and restarts.
Within the last 2 hours (Been at this for about 12 hours now.) I grabbed Jokersax's build (Beta 0.1.0), wiped/reset/flash twice as I have before. Now as I take a breath I noticed that the Wifi Icon came up in the Notification bar, but when I go into Settings and Scan, I see none of the Networks around me. I looked under Advanced and noticed that my MAC Address is 'Unavailable' nor am I showing an IP address, even though Wifi is saying 'On'. Verified on my Router, my Phone is not connected to it.
Odd Side note, installed aLogcat just to see if I could catch any errors, and it is not giving me anything, that is, I am not seeing any logs through the app. Most likely an unrelated issue, but still a tad annoying.
Everything else seems in order, including Mobile Data (Able to access Web Pages, Market/Play Store, receive email, etc.). Just Wifi pretty much 'Lights are on, but no one is Home.'. Any suggestions on next steps?
We discussed this issue over in some other threads and conclusion is that it's a hardware malfunction Ur broadcom chip is burned, many people (including me) had that problem.

I need to really work on my searching, tried several variations of 'atrix WiFi cm10' and could not pin down a related thread.
But back on topic, CRAP! What I was hoping was not the case. Thanks for the reply, will continue to dig for those threads and cross fingers the chip really is not fried (doubtful but hey, people can dream right?).
Thank you for the reply.

I can't search the threads right now as i am typing from my phone-search is limited to 20-30 posts... But keywords for ur search should be : "atrix wifi error" or "wifi and bluetooth error on atrix" Several forums have this kinda threads, not just xda unfortunately ... seems like it's very often malfunction on this lovely phone. I couldn't repair my previous atrix so i bought another one.

We're talking fastboot wipe kind of clean install? Going to give that a go as a last attempt, will post results here.
Glimmer of hope tonight, was discussing the problem with a friend, went to turn on WiFi and it actually scanned and connected for about 2 minutes before crapping out. This tells me there maybe life to the chip still. Now to get fastboot to connect and try a wipe and see what happens.

Any news on this front? I am one of the afflicted as well.
I'm having a similar issue. though my BT works just fine, no delays, no errors, no intermittance.
Wifi, I can scan for networks just fine. i click on mine to connect. it shows connecting, noting that when it says connecting the signal shows 1 bar as compared to the full set of wifi bars when scanning, i am also right next to the AP. is tries connceting for about 20 seconds or so. then goes back to saying "saved" under the SSID, other networks showing "disabled" when this happens. i originally noticed this after flashing epinters cm10. i tried flashing 37p, 36p and 30p radios with no difference.
EDIT: also want to note that i HAVE disabled the "avoid poor connections" option. and have tried setting static IP.
I flashed the same and I am unable to get my wifi to work after clean wipe, radio install or anything else that I have tried. Could software have really burned up a wifi radio????

Mine works occasionally so I don't think the radio is dead. The rom just acts like it's not there most of the time and doesn't give a mac address. Sometimes it works though after a reboot. Would flashing a different radio help? My baseband version says N_01.77.37P
I had an IP and a MAC, but no wifi internet.
Using mobile data, I downloaded Set DNS and then enabled wifi, works fine.
Now it's working but mobile data is going very very slow, it took 5min to download Set DNS.
I have a skyrocket but the "no wifi" issue is probably the same - your not getting DNS
I'm going back to CM9 for now.
+1 wifi matter under CM10
Try rebooting the router.
Experienced same issue (unable to connect, showing full bars, dropping to 1 bar when connecting and never being able to complete a connection) rebooting my router has fixed the issue. I'm not technical but it might have to do with the DNS release for addresses .. in any case unplugging my router for a bit and restarting it fixed the issue for me.

[Q] WiFi obtaining ip address

Hi,
As my title said, i don`t know how to get pass this problem. Until a few days ago my home wifi connection was running smooth but one morning it`s just got stuck on "obtaining ip address". I`ve tried factory reset, changing to another JB stock rom, changing kerrnel to PhilZ v5.06.6 Safe Stock Kernel, again the same problem. Reset my wifi modem was not the answer either. Do you have any other suggestion for me ?
Thank You !!!
Allocate static IP rather than dynamic via DHCP (Google is your friend). Someone else asked this exact same question/had this exact same problem last week & fixed it by doing this.
Edit - Update your router firmware if that doesn't work, then try with both a dynamic IP & static IP again once you've done that/if you need to do it.
the static IP is for the phone or for the modem ?
EDIT : Never mind mate, I found the solution! Thanks! I changed my phones IP into static.
Good man. And good job working out how to do it yourself
You're the 2nd person this has worked for over the past week, so we'll make this the standard 'first thing you try' when people are having this problem (I will at least).

Yes, but this is a solution only for your hot-spot at home where you can change the settings of the router, not for every hot-spot you encounter.
That's right. But you're never going to be able to fix problems like that (accessing a 'public' hotspot, etc) because you obviously don't have access to the router you're connecting to. Every now & then, something funky gets introduced to WiFi drivers in some builds of some kernels (exactly what, ??), causing problems with connecting to/maintaining a connection to some routers.
So, the problem is back... After few minutes of working, the Wi-Fi is yet again making problems. It keeps connecting to the network and then it keeps disconnecting and, while connected, the internet isn't working. In the attachment you'll see the setting I made on the phone. Is there anything wrong with them?
Then you try the other thing I suggested.
Edit - Also, what I meant when I said 'allocate static IP' is, at the router's end, tell the router to issue a static IP for that device (your phone), normally you can 'tell' the router - for device with MAC ab:01:cd:23:ef (as an example, the MAC of the WiFi adapter in the phone), allocate whatever static IP you want to use. Almost all routers should allow you to do this, I'm not going to tell you how to do it, because 1) It's not a phone thing & 2) How to do it will vary widely depending on the router.
So, after trying all software methods i found out that it`s a hardware problem. After making some deeper research i found that the faulty component was BAT500 leaking acid on the motherboard right on the Wifi circuits ( sadly this is o common problem on the s2 after going on ICS or JB ). Now i had two choices: either send my phone back to samsung service or to fix it myself. Since my warranty was gone i`ve tried the second method which was quite simple. All i had to do was disassemble my phone and clean the leaking with a brush and some alcohol, and now the wifi is working flawless.I don`t know if this is a permanent solution but i`ll try to update on the progress.
Nice work tracking down what was causing the problem Hopefully this thread gives people something to look at when they've tried everything else & it hasn't worked.

Hi i am facing the same problem. wifi in my s2 got stuck in the middle. Its not powering on, also it doesn't show powered off as well. I am on stock rom with mods. Did nandroid backup, factory reset, complete wipe, used other roms as well but non of them worked. Could there be some hardware related problem or heating problem or problem with BAT500? How did you diassemble your phone and cleaned that acid? can you please suggest some video links on this?
Search for the Samsung service manuals. Do a Google search; appending 'XDA' to your search terms should throw up some threads here where people have attached the files to posts. The manuals detail how to do pretty much every fix they do at service centres with pics, have parts lists, detailed diagrams that show where everything is. That should help.
Edit - Please don't post to multiple threads one after the other about the same issue (you revived a >6 mth old thread in that other one you posted to).

This is typically a kernel issue, but without knowing if you have modded the phone and/or how, it's hard to say. Often times there are wifi modules that need to be installed with certain roms to make it work or a completely different kernel period. Also, just saying you have tried various fixes is next to useless. Without knowing what you've tried, that could mean anything. How would we know you are looking at the right guide for the current firmware, software, etc that you are running?

If the software update you have available doesn't fix it, then time to see if the people who replaced the motherboard have a warranty or return policy.

WIFI Connected but no internet. Please help! I Have tried everything!

Hi Everyone!
If this is in the wrong place I apologise,
I have been using the AOSP ROM (http://en.miui.com/thread-502828-1-1.html)
Everything was fine using the March version of the ROM but I installed the 20/5/2017 version and i started (every now and then) getting my WIFI saying connected but no internet... I then cannot use my browser, apps that need WIFI etc until i reboot my phone then works ok again for a while.
They then released an update 21st and also one after that 23rd. I have tried both the updates and i still get the error, I have done a clean install both times and wiped the cashes. I have also tried this .>> http://www.techsiddhi.com/2014/05/how-to-resolve-connected-to-wifi-but-no.html
i have tried to change to static IP on my device but wont allow me to save changes i am out of ideas and really dont know what to do, I dont think its an issue with the ROM but maybe my router, i just dont know...
I appreciate any help you guys could give!
Many thanks
Matthew

I had issues with Wi-Fi on a bt home hub (previous to this phone though) which had similar symptoms.
I got around it by tweaking the settings in the hub (disabled band steering, so that 2.4ghz and 5ghz have different ssid's. Also set 2.4 to be"mode 3")
A long shot, that you have the same router, I know.
Well you can flash this ROM http://bit.ly/2qdTEz0 which is the latest xiaomi.eu stable ROM for Redmi Note 4 MTK and Magisk Manager V12 for root http://bit.ly/2puOFMA .
You can learn more about Xiaomi.eu by visiting https://xiaomi.eu
Information about Magisk ---> https://forum.xda-developers.com/app...mless-t3473445
*Remember! You can always use SuperSU for root if you like it better.

Thanks very much for the info George I really appreciate the effort you have put into finding the information for me, I was no a fan of the Chinese ROM that came with the phone that's why i looked into installing a custom ROM and apart from the current issue I am very happy with it.
I have downloaded the Global ROM and Magisk films so that if I cannot find a solution soon I can give it a try.... I always get nervous when rooting/flashing new software as I always worry about boot loops etc as i am fairly new to all this.

Thanks very much for getting back to me I really appreciate it! I definitely think were on the right track, my router is a SKY Fibre router but I can't say I understand what you are talking about lol... I have been into the router settings and had a look, one think i have noticed is even tho I have changed my ROM 3 times, starting from scratch each time it is still allocated the same ip address etc.. (192.168.1.6) so it seems to be carrying the problem over each time.
I have tried rebooting the router, phone several times I did try and follow steps to change to a static IP from my modify network on my phone but would not allow me to save the changes..
I did read that I should try and go into developer options and enable "Use legacy DHCP client) I did this after flashing the latest version of the AOSP ROM (23/5/2017) so far its been ok but i'm not sure if it will last. I just don't understand what the problem is??
Thanks again guys for all your help and I hope I can get to the bottom of it!
Matt
Did you upgrade it or do a clean flash? Try a clean flash if you didn't. I am using the latest build of the same ROM, no problems at all.

Thanks very much for coming back to me,
Yes did a clean install 3 times, it must be bringing the problem with it somehow, i don't understand it?
Each of the 3 time I have done a full wipe and cleared all cashes etc....
Also, you are not restoring Amplify settings from the download page? Are you able to connect to other routers?
The router is assigning you the same up address each time because your Mac address isn't being changed when you flash new Rom (Mac address is unique 12 digit number, hard coded into the radio on your phone. It should stay the same. You can change it temporarily by spoofing. Do not pay attention to this though, it is for info only, just so you know what's happening )
Your router recognises the Mac address of the phone and issues it the same ip address that's been given before, by dhcp.

If that is the problem then an app called "Change my MAC - Spoof WiFi MAC" can be used for what its name suggests.

Well I was wrong. I just tried this app and it doesn't seem to work with our device.
I said in my post, I was explaining, just for info.
It'll likely be some erroneous setting in his sky router. Sky are well known for issuing appalling hardware with their connections(and forcing customers to use them by refusing to give adsl login details, so people can use their own supplied hardware)
Another poster asked if op has the same issue using other routers - I'll bet that it's just with this one router.

An alternative would be Pry-Fi. Idk maybe Matt can try it and see if it helps.

When I flash a clean install of the ROM I use titanium backup to restore all my apps and data (including Amplify) Do you think this could be an issue?? So far the "fix" using legacy DCHP in developer options has seemed to be working... been on for 8+ hours yesterday and a couple so far today and has not done it (yet) ...

Thanks for the info! I appreciate your help Do you think there is anything I can do? I can log into my SKY router but not sure what I can change, I have not tried to log into any other wifi yet, I can get internet absolutely fine on my SKY router. What happens is after a couple of hours or so I notice I am not getting any internet on my phone and I have an exclamation mark on my WIFI Symbol, so I turn it off and on, reboot etc.. and it comes right for a while then happens again so its intermittent.. Like i said above so far its been ok using legacy DCHP in developer options but im not 100% convinced as yet..
i am not sure if this helps any but you know when you first flash your rom and android starts for the first time and you go through the welcome screen, choose language etc.. I notice when i select my WIFI and enter my password it briefly (slit second) shows "Connected No internet" but then does the usual obtaining IP address etc....
An alternative would be Pry-Fi. Idk maybe Matt can try it and see if it helps.

I don;t know anyone with fibre, who has SKY as their ISP.
If you like, I can have a look at your router settings, via teamviewer on your computer.
PM me if you want me to have a look
Well still having the issues!
I have clean flashed MIUI Global ROM and still have the issue, I have now put AOSP ROM Back on as its sooooo much better than MIUI as I can safely say its nothing to do with the phone itself and seems to be a router/phone settings issue but i still dont really know what to do..
Over the last week or so I have noticed workmen looking at out local green fibre box and wondering if it is an issue with the line so I might give SKY a ring and see whats the issue.

Just to give you guys a bit of an update...
I have just got of the phone with SKY now and they have asked me to change the channel from auto to channel 13 and also to select WPA/WPA2-PSK.
As i was on the phone to them my phone did the "connected no internet" thing and i used my laptop to make the changes to the router and after a few seconds my phone connected again so I am hoping that this may have fixed the issue! Fingers crossed!
Still doing it! So I have installed EPIC ROM and my router has given a different ip address so fingers crossed it wont do it anymore, been a few hours and so far so good...
totally late to this, but i'm facing the same problem on my redmi y2. the router that i'm using is TP Link archer C50. no custom rom or anything. please help
li faced a similar problem as my phone won't detect wifi signal from my router, i reset my phone but only after 15 minutes my phone can't detect signal from my router but problem solved when i switched aeroplane mode on and than off as soon as i switched it off wifi signal was detected and my phone got connected to it. Sometimes it shows no internet i switch aeroplane mode on & than off and it starts to work again or it gets fixed automatically too. You can try too it may help.
