I have a few questions about updating my phone to ICS roms,
Current setup,
CWM 5.0.2.3
Rom: serendipity 8.1
Rooted: yes
kernel: unsure
Desired setup
siyah kernel v3.2.7.2
mod: Pure ICS v7.5
CWM 5.5??
Questions
1. do I need CWM 5.5 to install Siyah?
2. What order should I install everything or does it matter.
Sry for the noob questions I just dont want to brick my phone
thanks in advance for the help.
I think that CWM 5.5 comes with Siyah already. I'm not 100% sure. And it doesn't really matter which version of CWM you have, they all work the same way.
First, flash the ROM and then flash Siyah (so you need to download the CWM version).
Ok so Installed Pure and Siyah
BUT, now my phone is forking slow, and it keeps telling me things have crashed such as com.google. and Exchange service. I must have messed somthing up but i cant figure out what
It seems upon further inspection that i really messed up, I am getting a new rom to try and fix things, the rom i have on my phone right now will not do ANYTHING, ill update when i get somthing figured out so others can avoid my mistakes.
Ok so i got Omega Series v15
installed and working....sort of, on the bottom of the phone the menu button works like a back button, the back button and search button both do nothing.
also the screen will dim but never black out on its own. So i still have things to figure out

You sure you have an I9100? The I9100 doesn't have a search button.
Sounds like maybe you have might have one of the US variants...
Check the label under your battery.
If the model number says:
SGH-i777, go here.
SPH-D710, go here.
SGH-T989, go here.
If it doesn't say any of those three, plug the model number it DOES say into google, followed by "site:forum.xda-developers.com" to find the forum for your device.
EDIT: a quick google of "Serendipity 8.1" reveals this as a ROM for the AT&T Galaxy S II, which is the SGH-i777. Follow the i777 link above.

Current Version info is:
Model #: SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
Baseband version: I777UCKH7
kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build# GINGERBREAD.UCKH7
I then installed Rom Manager Premium from the market and thru there installed the CWM Recovery 5.0.2.6
I downloaded the TeamHacksung CM7.2 RC I have also tried the CM7.1 stable and gets same results which are
The phone boots in CWM Recovery and when I choose ANY option I get the CWM logo and the device gets stuck there to get device back up. I have to force into into ODIN and flash the ROM I'm on which then enables me to boot back to where I was before booting into CWM Recovery.
I have searched the forums and can't find a solution to this with the ATT version of this device
Please help
Your issue probably stems from ROM manager. It does not play well with sgs2. Recommend removing that thing either way.
Secondly have you tried flashing cm then when it boots into cwm flashing it again without wiping.

How do I flash CM w/o using CWM Recovery ? I never get to the option of being able to flash CM inside CWM Recovery mode.
Is it possible to flash CM w/ Odin or Hemidall?
EDIT: I'm reading your FAQ now and found the reply where it was suggested to use HOME for item selection . will try that and more review of your FAQ - Thank you
update: I have root + installed cwm with adb
all from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
but now no freaking key press combo seems to boot me into cwm recovery any ideas?
power off completely
hold volume up, down and power until SGH-i777 shows up, continue holding until it power cycles again
when that shows up for the second time, release all 3 buttons and wait. If the AT&T boot animation starts, you messed up, so try again
if successful, you will be in CWM
I do that but no love the only difference is mine shows i9100 not 777
under settings -> about phone
Model# SAMSUNG-SGH-I777
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version I777UCKH7
kernel version
2.6.35.7
Build# GINGERBREAD.UCKH7
is this just a pebcak error on my part or something else? I do not release all 3 till the model # logo appears for 2nd time then i get att crap
Actually it should just say Samsung Galaxy SII at the initial boot up.
If it says something different, you may have an issue....
Make sure that you're keeping all three buttons pressed firmly until the SECOND TIME that the logo comes up, and when it comes up, let go of all 3 immediately.
I get
Samsung Galaxy SII
GT-I9100
and no cwm recovery love
does it / should it make any difference if usb cable is plugged in or not?
issue solved via
./adb reboot recovery
EDIT: okay good you got it solved. I still don't know WHY your boot image is different, but it's okay.
Anyways...I had the stuff below typed out already so I'll just leave it
Boot up, back up everything you would need, then do factory reset
Use that guide again
use the following steps: 2c, then 3c
Then try going into CWM. Also, your boot image should be changed back to the normal one. Might have to do with the fact that you tried to use ROM Manager initially, it causes problems on this phone
once i got into cwm recovery via adb i tried to do a backup and got
error when backing up /system
phone is now booted all the way up ..is flashing via the guide in 2c sufficient for the factory reset or do you have other method? phone currently has the 2c rom loaded plus the CWM kernel ( SGH-I777_ClockworkMod-Recovery_5.0.2.3.tar)
can't find link where I got the cwm kernel from

Flashing a custom kernel via Odin/Heimdall will trigger the custom kernel warning - a big yellow triangle and the boot screen saying GT-I9100.
To the OP - you say you have searched, but nearly everything you have asked is answered in the FAQ. What isn't in the FAQ is in the first post of codeworkx's CWM recovery thread. Seriously, it's NOT that hard to search, the Development forum has only four pages of threads, and the answer to some of your questions is right in the thread titles of the relevant threads.

point taken - I have looked at so many threads and comments that I guess I overlooked some of the very answers i was / am searching for just for the record I'm not getting the yellow triangle during boot - will go back to digging
was asking here as I saw so much info was trying to get consolidated answers from folks who know more than I do and might could tell where i may have messed up

Hey Everyone!
I have recently (Yesterday) installed VillainROM 3.0, and there seems to be 3 issues with it that I cannot figure out (it's more likely one, just affecting 3 things). The reason I am not posting this in the VillainROM thread is because I am a new member here, and I need at least 10 posts in order to post in a developer thread. Anyway, I love the ROM, but the problem I have relates to the capacitive keys on the phone. I am using the AT&T version of the SGS2, so it has 4 of the capacitive buttons, and no physical buttons on the bottom of the front face. The problem is with the home, back, and search buttons. When I tap the home button, it does not go "home", but instead it acts as the back button should, returning me to my last screen. Furthurmore, the back as well as the search buttons do not perform any action when pressed. The options button still works as it should. I figure it may help if I explain how I went about getting my phone to it's present state. I started a few days ago, with the full intent of ending up with the VillainROM, but as I read how to install it, it came to my attention that I first needed root access. I began by attempting to root it using Zedomax's method. Once I had done this, my phone, when I booted into clockwork recovery, would act strangly. I would see the main screen, but when I went to select an option, it would instead become a screen with just the background, and no further options, but I could still go back to the main screen with no issues. I figured I must have done something incorrectly, so I flashed my phone back to the stock kernel, and all was well, including the capacative buttons. I then found the Chainfire method, and after Accidently flashing the incorrect kernel, and again reverting it back to stock, I sucessfully achieved root access. The reason I did this was to be able to flash kernels via CWM. I then did a cache wipe as well as a factory reset, and flashed the Ninphetamine kernel, v 2.1.3. After this, I flashed VillainRom 3.0, and all went well. I quickly realized the problem, and here I am. I have no idea if this could be the issue, but since I did flash a newer version of Ninphetamine before installing VillainROM, the ROM did revert me back to Ninphetamine v2.0.5. If there is any other information that you may need, please feel free to ask. Thank you in advance for any help I may receive.

And I stopped reading there. You flashed a ROM meant for the GT-I9100, onto your SGH-I777. There is SOME cross compatibility, because they use the same chipset, but there are still differences, as you experienced with the capacitive keys not working right.
This is the forum for the GT-I9100. You should only be flashing firmwares/ROMs from the SGH-I777 forum.
Thanks for the very quick reply. I am assuming, then, that since VillainROM and Ninphetamine are paired, that the kernel is for GT-I9100 as well, and I should began another search for a kernel/ROM, and flash them from a stock setup?

They (VillainROM and Ninphetamine) can be used independently. i.e. you can be on VillianROM and flash a different kernel, or you can be on a different ROM, and flash Ninphetamine.

Not that it matters to you really, but I9000 is the Galaxy S 1. I9100 is the Galaxy S II. Just wanted to clear that up.

Well, yes, you'll need to search for another ROM, because anything you download from the I9100 forums will probably not work right for you. Download a ROM from the I777 forum. I linked them above.
Again, Thank you. Well enough for me, one of the first posts in the linked forums is a tool to port GT-I9100 ROMS to I-777 ROMS.
I have a GS 2 I777 on AT&T that ran 4.0.4 with the latest update from AT&T. I used Odin to install Siyah version 3.4.2 and since i have, the phone is in an infinite loop when booting. I get the first screen with the yellow warning icon and the device name, then it goes to the siyah kernel logo, and then back to the device name screen. This repeats over and over.
I've tried putting different versions of Siyah back on the device: 3.2.6 and 5.0.1, but none work and leaving the battery out for 15 minutes
What can I do to fix this?

1)u are in the first place on a wrong thread (meant for I9100).
2)And foolish enough to flash a kernel meant for I9100 on ur I777 phone (which is quite Different hardware wise compared to I9100).
3)U should feel lucky that ur phone is still ON.
4) Visit www.sammobile.com and download a stock firmware meant for ur I777 AT & T version.
5)flash the same from ODIN to get rid of the mess.
6)Finally put some sanity into ur brains and Do some reading before doing anything silly
Good Luck!

You may be able to fix it by flashing a version of siyah or another similar kernel which is compiled specifically for the SGH-I777. If that doesn't work, then as someone stated, you should flash back to stock, or stock plus root if you plan to modify the firmware. See the links in my signature for more information, and after you have read, feel free to ask any questions here.

That did it, thanks! I following the links in your signature.
Not my first time to root and install a custom rom on other phone, but this phone isn't treating me well.
So I followed the root guides to root the phone.
Downloaded an insecure kernel for i9100. Although, oddly enough, I bought this phone 2nd hand, and when I went to the "about" part for the kernel look up before tried to root it, the kernel info just contained ICS3.?? (forgot) and the date. There was no four or five letter kernel code like I've been seeing. But according to cnet (one of many rooting tutorials), the kernel version doesn't matter as you can change the kernel anytime, or after rooting in this case.
So I installed Kies to get the Samsung drivers installed. Done.
Restarted phone to download mode (volume down, home, power)
Started Odin 3 v1.83
Phone was recognized. Click the 2 boxes (Auto reboot and F. Rest Time).
Clicked PDA, loaded up an insecure kernel.
Status went through OK, ended up with "Pass!"
Phone automatically restarted.
Now the problem. It restarts, shows the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo with the big triangle underneath it, and thats it. Never leaves this screen. I thought maybe it's a kernel problem, so I tried several different insecure kernels, all with no change. I have no idea how to find what kernel was the original one that came with this phone. Would using Odin with the original secure kernel (or even insecure) solve this problem? Otherwise, what else can I do? My note 2 was stolen so I bought this s2 second hand until I can scrape up enough money for a note 2 again, but the damn thing won't even boot up now. :crying:
How can I get this working again, even to have it stock again I'd be fine (though obviously putting on a custom room with root would be best).
Well you dont seem to mention what you have tried after flashing your kernel?
Have you tried going into download or recovery mode, do they work? If so simply flash another kernel or rom.
Also, I my be wrong but there isnt a China i9100 afaik so you may have flashed incorrect kernel so system isnt booting.
Remove battery and tell/show us what label says.

There wasn't much to try, at least as far as my noob self knows about. I tried flashing 6 other kernels I found, merely taking guesses at which might possibly be the Chinese s2 one, I remember from flashing other phones that i had to look for Z or D in the kernel ID. But all of them just led to the same problem of not booting past the logo screen.
Besides just trying to start it up as normal (which doesn't work) and starting it up in download (by holding down vol+home+power), what others ways can I start it up? I don't know how to boot into recovery, and I didn't know I can flash a rom without first rooting it, which I haven't done yet because it's still stuck in start-up.
Searching enough xda threads and just googling seems show a pretty large consensus supporting the existance of a China i9100, plus I see them everywhere (as well as s3, s4, and notes), so I'm 99% sure they are an official and semi-large market for them here (after iPhones unfortunately). But even still, that doesn't help me locate the original kernel.
Under the battery, is says this:
Samsung WCDMA
Model #: GT-I9100
CMIIT ID: 2011CP2751
Do these help? So is any of the steps I did wrong, or can you otherwise point me in the right direction? Appreciate the help.

Hello guys please hear me out!
I'm new to android as well as this forum, but I hear it's a great community. I followed a lot of tuts on how to upgrade my S2 to jelly bean or ics none of them really worked.
OK my friend got me the phone from amazon it's a Samsung Galaxy S2 International Version 16gb Unlocked with 2.3.5 Gingerbread stock firmware. The following day I tried to upgrade the unrooted firmware via KIES, it told me there is no update available for my phone. Okay I decided to root it and flash it though odin. I read that it was wise to back-up the software first and boy was it! So I rooted it and backed it up with ClockworkMod to an sd card just in case. But I forgot to get the other information before I flashed: original Baseband version, Kernel and Build number.
The flashing went fine I got 4.1.2 on my phone but I lost the network service, the lock screen and the turn off key dialog (the phone would just turn off as soon as i hit the off button). Rooted it, installed a different 4.1.2 firmware, same thing. Then I tried ICS, it was worse - I had similar issues as well as the home key was not working when multitasking. So I went back to original backed up rom. Everything works fine now but the baseband version remains from the last "update". Everytime I try a new firmware and go back to the original rom the last baseband sticks.
My question is: Is it at all possible to upgrade my phone? My kernel (from backedup rom) is I9100XXKI3 and build number gingerbread.XXKI3 Imei is fine.
Also my binary data counter is up to 7, is that bad?
Any help I will greatly appreciated! I badly want to upgrade, it's the whole reason I got S2 because it was supposed to be "upgradeable"
Thank youuuu.

Read every word of a thread at least once before even attempting anything then make sure you have all the files you need ready to be used in their relevant places too and try again. When People claim to have read lots of tutorials and guides that have worked for the majority of People but can't get something to work then it's usually down to user error, i.e skimming through guides and missing a vital step that throws the whole thing off.

Thank you guys for the replies however do you know anything about my weird issues, like the lockscreen not working after update, then no network service and the power off dialogue missing completely. I've tried at least 3-4 different jelly bean firmwares and always i got the same issues.
I live in Kosovo and i downloaded the Greek firmware which I'm going to try next. I'm going to go through pelpa87's thread you suggested and hopefully it will work and I will report back.
Thanks again.
Edit: thanks for the help guys, last night I installed jelly bean and it works great without any issues.
