Please help me get jelly bean on my S2 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys please hear me out!
I'm new to android as well as this forum, but I hear it's a great community. I followed a lot of tuts on how to upgrade my S2 to jelly bean or ics none of them really worked.
OK my friend got me the phone from amazon it's a Samsung Galaxy S2 International Version 16gb Unlocked with 2.3.5 Gingerbread stock firmware. The following day I tried to upgrade the unrooted firmware via KIES, it told me there is no update available for my phone. Okay I decided to root it and flash it though odin. I read that it was wise to back-up the software first and boy was it! So I rooted it and backed it up with ClockworkMod to an sd card just in case. But I forgot to get the other information before I flashed: original Baseband version, Kernel and Build number.
The flashing went fine I got 4.1.2 on my phone but I lost the network service, the lock screen and the turn off key dialog (the phone would just turn off as soon as i hit the off button). Rooted it, installed a different 4.1.2 firmware, same thing. Then I tried ICS, it was worse - I had similar issues as well as the home key was not working when multitasking. So I went back to original backed up rom. Everything works fine now but the baseband version remains from the last "update". Everytime I try a new firmware and go back to the original rom the last baseband sticks.
My question is: Is it at all possible to upgrade my phone? My kernel (from backedup rom) is I9100XXKI3 and build number gingerbread.XXKI3 Imei is fine.
Also my binary data counter is up to 7, is that bad?
Any help I will greatly appreciated! I badly want to upgrade, it's the whole reason I got S2 because it was supposed to be "upgradeable"
Thank youuuu.

Read every word of a thread at least once before even attempting anything then make sure you have all the files you need ready to be used in their relevant places too and try again. When People claim to have read lots of tutorials and guides that have worked for the majority of People but can't get something to work then it's usually down to user error, i.e skimming through guides and missing a vital step that throws the whole thing off.

Thank you guys for the replies however do you know anything about my weird issues, like the lockscreen not working after update, then no network service and the power off dialogue missing completely. I've tried at least 3-4 different jelly bean firmwares and always i got the same issues.
I live in Kosovo and i downloaded the Greek firmware which I'm going to try next. I'm going to go through pelpa87's thread you suggested and hopefully it will work and I will report back.
Thanks again.
Edit: thanks for the help guys, last night I installed jelly bean and it works great without any issues.

Rooted and want to upgrade?

Perhaps someone can help me here.
I have an ATT galaxy s2 (i777 I think). A while back for some reason it started shutting off randomly. After that I rooted it and then a few days later it just going into a boot-loop and wouldnt start up at all.
So I read on this site that I needed to flash kernel for it. To be honest I wasn't sure what that was but I downloaded one that was like "one kernel to rule them all". So now it says SGH-I999 when I start it up and seems to work mostly normally except for a new model number and yellow triangle.
I want to update it to the new ICS that is just released, do I need to unroot or flash a different kernel to it before I try to update it???
In short. No. . Everything is OK. Just download the official update from the development section, do a full wipe, and install. Make sure to have a backup first tho.
thanks, that worked!

Unable to Update Galaxy S2 i777 Via Kies: Recieving odd Notices

Hey everyone, I was attempting to flash an iteration of cyanogen mod on my i777 last night and something went horribly wrong (I think the tutorial I used linked me to Clockwork Recovery Mod for the i9100 or something) so long story short, I flashed a stock i777 rom and reset to factory defaults. My phone is now functional but I'm trying to upgrade to the latest firmware before I try to flash another ROM. I'm running into some problems using Kies though. When I have Kies open and my phone is plugged in, it realizes that I need to upgrade firmware and ask me if I want to. A dialog box opens stating my current firmware version (PDA:KH7 / PHONE:KH7 / CSC:KH7), the latest firmware version (PDA:KK6 / PHONE:KK6 / CSC:KK6), the test "TEST1" then the update/cancel buttons. Then it prompts me to read some disclaimer information (don't disconnect your phone, back everything up, etc) and I click "Start upgrade". Immediately after this a dialog box opens that says "Notice" at the top then in the information field there is just the message "TEST2". At the bottom are the options "start" and "cancel" if I click start, the process continues to download upgrade components, then prepare upgrade components, then the upgrade process begins and I get a notification that just says "Notice" Then a bunch of (what looks like) mandarin characters (I'd post a picture but because I'm a new user I cannot reference external links.) Once I click 'OK' it acts as if the phone has been disconnected and reconnected and starts the process again.
Obviously these messages are very odd and uninformative for an end user like myself. I'm led to believe I'm doing something wrong but can't find any help online (I've tried google and searching through threads here here). Has anyone experience this before? is there an ICS rom that I can flash straight from the stock rom? What can I do to fix this?
Thanks in advance!
Wild guess. U used rom manager.

Not sure about the messages, but when I first decided to try the KIES update when I had restored to stock, I did the KK6 update over the air. Go to settings, then software update (I can't quite remember where software update is in gingerbread settings).
I don't know if this will help, but plugging your phone into KIES with KK6 already on thephone may work.
And, yes as mentioned above, if you used ROM manager in the past, you will have problems.
You mentioned you are back to stock with a functional phone. You also said you plan to flash a custom rom. So why bother upgrading via Kies first? Whatever upgrade you receive via kies will disappear when you flash a new ROM. If you have a functional phone, Just go ahead and flash whatever you are going to flash.
However, it sounds as if your problems started because, in the BEST case you flashed the wrong rom for your phone and, in the WORST case, you might have used ROM manager which a few minutes of browsing the stickies would have immediately told you was a bad idea. So, before you attempt anything else with your phone, it sounds as if you need to do some reading to make sure you understand what you are doing. The stickies are a great place to start.

I tried updating over the air yesterday after I did the factory reset but it told me I was IP to date (obviously not true) and is making me wait 24 hours before I try again. I still have about 6 hours before I can try again. I'll post again with my results. I did not use ROM manager. I flashed the from via Odin mode. Thanks for the replies, guys.
I'm confused about what u did and how u fixed it. And if its fixed. But whatever the case let us know how it turns out.

You can update to 4.0.3 by going to sammobile and flashing a stock rom via Odin.

[Q] Borked i717

I'm a casual enthusiast who has always rooted his Android phones without an issue but have run into problems with an i717 I recently bought. I've gone through quite a bit of troubleshooting over the past few days and am beaten and must ask for help. When I first bought the phone, it was woefully out of date so using Kies, I updated the phone. All was good and phone was up to 4.0.4 (or whatever the most current version is) and working perfectly unrooted. At that point, I rooted it using qbking77 instructions on YouTube. Per RootChecker I was rooted but noticed I couldn't connect to the internet without WiFi. At this point, the trains went off the track as I tried to install a stock 4.0.4 modem which didn't work, panicked and used Da_G's [Stock ODIN] ROM trying to get back to stock. At this point, I started getting error messages like "android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly", something similar about calendar, phone won't work, etc. Also, when I go into recovery mode, I can navigate up and down with the volumes keys but can't select anything with the power key and after about 10 seconds, it goes to an ominous screen with a red triangle and exclamation point. Phone stats currently are:
Android 2.3.6
Baseband: I717UCLF6
Kernel: 2.6.35.11
Gingerbread.UCLA1
In any case I'm really bummed as I just bought this phone on Monday and have already borked it. Any help appreciated and unfortunately I am not familiar with all of the acronyms and nomenclature around here so direct links to helpful post would be useful. At this point, I just want to get to the most current stock AT&T ROM possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the response and as I indicated above, I have tried Da_G's methods in the 2nd link multiple times with no success. I'll go through the steps in the first link and see what happens. I am looking for something to wipe the phone completely clean as there is not a thing on it I need. Hopefully these will do the business. One thing that I am not able to sort out is how to tell if a ROM comes with a modem, how to tell from the settings on my phone if a proper modem is installed and if I need to install a modem, how to tell which is the correct modem for the ROM installed. I have read quite a bit on modems but there is just so much information I'm honestly a little confused. Thanks again for your input and I'll post up results later tonight when I have time to troubleshoot.
Looks like you are on a GB rom (2.3.6) with ICS (4.0.4) modem. You can flash a GB modem or use KIES firmware upgrade and initialization to put you back to completely stock ICS (UCLF6)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27869730&postcount=1
Title says GB because that was the latest supported ROM at the time of posting. This will put you back to stock UCLF6.

I had a feeling it had something to do with the modem. I did a search for GB modems and am overwhelmed by the amount of options! I found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764210 but am unsure what the numerical designators are; EL 26, EL29, etc. Do these make a difference for what I am trying to do? Thanks for posting up and helping out. Can't wait to get home and get this damn phone sorted out.
Forget the modem -- there's no such thing as a GB or ICS modem -- they are independent of the android version.
What you have is the LATEST modem, so that part is OK.
The crazy error messages you're getting are from multiple flashes without cache wipes and system wipes.
The LF6 is year and month of release in samsungese.
Did you install a custom recovery, like CWR or TWRP?
That's your first move toward a good phone.

I didn't knowingly install a custom recovery unless it was built into a ROM I installed as the phone was new to me and I didn't have any data on it I felt I needed to be recovered. I now have the feeling that this isn't the type of recovery "custom recovery" is used for. I can get into "Android system recovery" through vol+/- and power if that is what you are talking about but like my original post mentioned, I can thumb up and down through the options with the volume keys but can't select anything with the power key. I was able to select with the power button upon originally installing the first 2 ROMs so I don't believe it is a hardware issue with the button. How do I tell if I have a custom recovery installed and what are the steps to take if I don't. Pardon my ignorance but I always assumed there was a way to completely wipe these devices and start over as long as you could access the device through Windows. I have nothing on this phone to save and just want to get it back to stock. I wish I could get Kies to allow me to factory reset but I keep getting the "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update through Kies". I know we are encouraged to read and learn on our own but as in any forum this size, there is quite a bit of ambiguous information available and I am frankly lost and it also doesn't help that I seem to be having multiple issues at once. If the modem is okay, and I don't have a custom recovery installed, what is the next step? Again, thanks to all of you taking the time to help out! I know what it's like to have a passion for something and the ability to help others work their way out of issues, mine just happens to be carbureted Japanese motorcycles, not phones!
Ignore the "your device current firmware" message in KIES. Open KIES, Put your phone in download mode, connect to PC , in KIES, select tools, firmware upgrade and initialization, enter your model (SGH-I717), it will ask for the serial number so have it handy, and continue through the prompts as outlined in the aforementioned post. KIES will completely reset your device to UCLF6. (Recovery, modem, system, etc.) You will be stock un-rooted when complete.

Well thanks to rsfinsrq's advice, the phone appears to be restored! No more error messages and everything seems to be running smoothly but I still can't get internet connectivity without WiFi. I can send/receive texts and calls but no internet browsing, Google Play, etc. Under Settings-->About Phone-->Status-->Mobile Network State is listed as "Disconnected". What could be causing this? I am leery to go poking around with it this soon but would like to get the full use of the phone. Thoughts?

Reading a little more on this, it seems this might be an issue with my AT&T plan and this particular device. I'll run by the AT&T store tomorrow to see if I can get it sorted. If anyone does have any additional suggestions, post them up!

Same spot, go to access point names, hit the menu button and reset to default.
Mystery solved! A trip to the AT&T store and I was told the lack of connectivity was due to my SIM card not being provisioned for an LTE enabled phone and it was "confusing" the network. 5 minutes spent getting a new SIM card and I was out the door, no muss no fuss and my very first positive experience with AT&T customer service. I guess there is a first for everything! Thanks again to everyone who helped out and I will definitely make sure I am a little more educated the next time I root and flash a ROM. Any suggestions for a stable ROM for me to start with?
Glad to hear you got it sorted out!

I9300 please help, stuck in boot loop

Hey there
Today I decided to root in order to install Clockwork Recovery Mod and from there install Android Revolution HD.
I used Titanium Backup Pro to backup everything before I installed ARHD and then when I tried to restore on ARHD it kept giving me problems so I decided I should just delete ARHD and go back to stock (original) ROM. The latest ROM for it is 4.1.2 while ARHD is 4.2.1 maybe it has something to do with it, but anyway I used Odin > PDA > chose original ROM which is I9300XXEMA2_I9300OJVEMA1_I9300XXELLA_HOME which I downloaded from SamMobile but now I am stuck in some sort of a boot loop where the SAMSUNG logo keeps appearing, disappearing, and some animations keep taking place.
I tried to reboot into recovery mode (held power, home, and volume up buttons simultaneously) but it just reboots to the initial black SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 I9300 screen and gets stuck, and there's some sort of red exclamation mark on the top left corner of the screen.
Any ideas on what to do now? I have Odin, the original firmware, Android Revolution, and CWM (.img not .tar) on my computer, is there anyway to use any of them in order to fix the device? I wouldn't mind formatting the device, for instance, if necessary.
ANY INFORMATION IS MUCH APPRECIATED! THANK YOU.
Any ideas guys? To make it short I installed the latest firmware for my device which is ( I9300XXEMA2_I9300OJVEMA1_I9300XXELLA_HOME ) but it keeps getting stuck in a boot loop, and I am assuming that's because perhaps when I updated to 4.2.1 (the above firmware is 4.1.2) the bootloader was updated or changed?
THANKS!!
Are you sure you're holding power, vol +, home for long enough to get into recovery??
Yes mate I am very sure. I have been trying different things for a while now but I still cannot get it to work. I am extremely frustrated I honestly want to break the phone but at the same time I know it's my fault and I WANT TO FIX IT!
Can you get into download mode? power, vol -, home.
Yeah mate I can. I finally was able to boot into recovery mode. The thing is, I had a .tar file of CWM (unlike the .img version from their website) which was old, but I was able to find a bit of a newer one which I flashed using Odin and it worked!
Now I am in the process of reinstalling Android Revolution HD and fingers crossed that it works. I already have access to download mode, but now that I have access to CWM I am guessing my chances of fixing everything is better?
UPDATE: Android Revolution HD booted and is working just fine. Should I just keep using it? I'd rather go back to the stock ROM, stay unrooted, and be able to receive OTA updates, but the latest firmware for my device is this "I9300XXEMA2_I9300OJVEMA1_I9300XXELLA_HOME" and I am assuming its bootloader is older than ARHD's which is why it gets stuck in a bootloop?
Thanks again for your help.
Good news
Personally, I'd just stay on ARHD if the ROM is ok.
It does sound like you have a newer bootloader which must have been flashed previously. I wouldn't have thought ARHD includes the bootloader though (I could be wrong).
Have you thought about flashing the latest MB5 BTU firmware? This is available from sammobile to flash via ODIN and you would get OTA updates.
Thanks for your reply, I truly appreciate all your help.
Well, I have not thought about that. I am pretty sure I have the MB5 bootloader (XXEMB5 or something like that) which I flashed via Odin in an attempt to resolve the issue, however it only seemed to work with ARHD but not 4.1.2 (XXEMA2).
So what you're saying is that I can install ANY 4.2.1 firmware available on SamMobile via ODIN and it'll work fine? Even if the country and provider are different? Mine is internationally unlocked but I am in Egypt in case that makes any difference.
Thanks again.
The bootloaders changed around ELLA/ELLC firmwares I think.
EMB5 is the latest BTU (UK) release. Its 4.1.2.
Yes, you can flash it, it doesnt make any difference where in the world you are as long as you have an I9300
You would then get OTA updates just like everyone else using stock EMB5 (BTU).
The BTU updates tend to come sooner rather than later as well so you'd likely be on a more upto date rom than an Egyptian one.
Hope this makes sense
Awesome. Well I cannot lie and say I fully understand but I get what you mean. I am going to download that firmware and install it using ODIN. Is there anything I should prepare before going ahead and doing that? I wouldn't want to get stuck in another bootloop! lol..
Would that stock ROM EMB5 BTU (which is 4.1.2 while my current Android revolution HD is 4.2.1) change my boot loader to the correct one?

I 'think' it includes the latest bootloader, I'm not too sure.
Just flash it with ODIN as you've done previously - in PDA etc...(make sure you dont choose repartition!)
If it bootloops, make sure you wipe data/cache & dalvik through recovery...
It should work. If not, flash CWM then ARHD again as you did earlier
good luck!
Alright mate I went ahead and installed the EMB5 BTU and it works flawlessly. Thanks again!
I am so stupid.. on the Android Revolution HD thread, XEMB5 is actually written in the title! lmao.. which means it did update my boot loader to that which is why my older firmware (XXEMA2) did not work.
Thanks for all your help, I truly appreciate it. Any ideas on when we're getting 4.2.1 or if it's even officially out yet? I have a feeling it's leaked because the latest I saw on SamMobile was 4.1.2.
Great news
There is a leak for 4.2.1 but it isnt very stable from what I have read.
Best to wait for an official release.
The S4 is out at the end of April so 4.2.2 should come along around then, if not before....
Glad its all sorted!!
Yeah I must say I agree with you. Android Revolution HD always comes without any visual changes, and while it is based on 4.2.1, I did not like the changes to how the sidebar, lockscreen, and some other things worked. There was this voice command feature that I really liked as in saying "Capture" for the camera to take a picture and "Play/Pause/Next/Previous" for the music application and such, but I am sure it is available on 4.1.2 as well I just haven't looked yet. I sure hope the S4 brings necessary updates to the S3 just like the S3 did to the S2. Between me and you, though, I'd have liked to have the 4G LTE version of the S3 just because it has 2GB of RAM which would have been nice since I keep a lot of applications on most of the time. I am pretty sure, however, that 4G affects the battery life much more than HSDPA and 3G, though, so that's a downside.
I'm pretty sure (but I may be wrong) custom roms don't update bootloader. The only way that a bootloader gets updated is via an OTA Update or reflashing firmware via pc Odin. If you did an OTA Update or flashed via pc odin to MB5 firmware then you flash back to MB1, you'll still have MB5 bootloader. All 4.1.2 bootloaders will not roll back via pc odin. When ever I (and everyone else) roll back android version (ie from 4.2.1 to 4.1.1 or 4.1.1 to 4.0.4) always get a bootloop at samsung logo, as mikep99 mentioned, a wipe/data factory reset fixes that issue but you had problems with your recovery.
I currently have ALEF bootloader after I updated to LLA firmware via pc odin. I rolled back by flashing a stock ICS firmware where the newest firmware for that country was 4.1.1. So after flashing XXBLH1 (4.0.4) I did an OTA update to XXDLK1 (4.1.1) and with that I got XXDLK1 bootloader then I flashed ALEF bootloader via pc odin. Problem now that samsung has pretty much updated all countries to 4.1.2 except Algeria TMC (Sammobile) so pretty much all OTS's now will give you the new bootloader.
