A SD card bricked my S3!!! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my S3 for around three weeks now, I have rooted it, but kept the stock ROM.
Today I put in a 64gb SD card and the phone froze. I tried rebooting it at it just hung at the logo screen. I couldn't get to recovery mode, but could get into download mode. So I tried to flash it with the stock ROM and it complained that it couldn't access the pit file. So after a little research I have attempted all manner of flashing techniques. Then I tried to manually partition it with Odin and Heimdall, all to no avail. Odin just complains that the pit file doesn't exist and Heimdall throws an error when trying to upload the pit.
It seems I have somehow damaged the on board memory. The big problem is that in download mode it says system status "Custom" because of the root, so chances are I can kiss my warranty goodbye as well.
Seems like a freak occurrence. Can anyone offer advice on other unbrick methods? Or has anyone seen an SD card wiping out a phone like this?
Also, any way to reset the counter on my bricked phone? I know the USB jig doesn't work with the S3 unfortunately..
KAAAAHHHHNN!!

Remove SD card end flash stock rom whit odin you try that????

[Q] i've done something stupid (soft bricked, i hope)

Ok so I was flashing the Axura 2.0.5 rom and I didnt see anything happening, so I got anxious and did something incredibly stupid, I pulled the battery. Now in the process i believe that i pulled the battery at the time the internal sd was being rewritten. At this point my phone will boot but will get stuck at the vibrant screen. I can get into download mode but I am unable to get into clockwork recovery (if I could then i'd just flash my nandroid backup). I've tried using odin v 1.0 and 1.30 to no avail. I'm using the 512 pit file and the t959uvjfd.tar files to try and reinstall and go back to stock. However when I do this my screen displays Applying Muti-csc, instaling muti csc. When I try to use odin I am able to see my phone in com9 but am unable to do anything with it aside from get into download mode. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone could give me. I have also tried to use the command propt and ADB to try and get this to work but I get the error of no device found.

What happens when you try to get into recovery? If you've borked a rom Install you can *usually* recover from it as nothing is really permanent in the phones memory.
When I try and get into recovery (I assume you mean clockworkmod) I select reinstall packages and I get the following error " E; cant open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory) installation aborted.
I am only able to access stock recovery.

Okay well you aren't completely out of luck, Ive had that before on my Fascinate, try to redownload the update.zip file for CWM and try again. Sometimes that fixes it for me *for some odd reason*
The problem is that I can't get into CWM recovery, only stock recovery, also how would I push update.zip if I cant get any where with odin?

If you have a card reader of some sort then you can mount your Micro SD card on your PC and do it like that, or if you have another Android phone then you can use it to mount the Micro SD card, just swap em. download the update.zip and drop it on the root of the card then in the stock recovery try and flash it.
My problem is i dont know how to access the root files right now, i am unable to do anything on the phone aside from access stock recovery
I am currently attempting this method "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817186" but nothing is happening with odin i am only seeing that odin has recognized the device but is stuck at "setupconnection" using odin v1.30
does anyone have a copy of the update.zip file to use to unpack clockwork?
I thought the update.zip had to be on the internal SD to work.

i think this is it
also I think I have to get it on the internal SD card but I'm not sure how to go about doing that seeing as how I have no access to anything but the recovery menu and odin which fails to make a connection. I get the yellow port but nothing happens beyond that.
Yeah you've got a true problem there I'm not sure what to do about that sorry man
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw
out of curiousity is it possible to remove the internal sd card and mount inside a card reader to add or edit files?
Im not sure there is an actual removable chip as much as its a part of the phones memory
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw
it was worth a shot, how would yall go about talking to t-mobile so that they would provide a new phone with out me having to pay 600ish for a new phone
Well there is an external SD card in the phone but as for the Internal memory that is NOT on an SD card, its a packaged chip not a removable media
any other thoughts about how i might use odin or the sdk to access my files on the root folders? so that i could insert the zip file?

I'm not sure about that I mean you voided the warranty I guess you could tell them its messed up and hope they don't figure out what you did but its on you, I think you might just have to bite down and take the heat
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw
is there really any way for them to tell that i've rooted the phone and what happened, normally dont they just check to see if the phone has physical damage and water damage?
They refurbish phones there is no way they give out new phones on replacements I mean hell you could end up with one I had three months ago lol but maybe they won't check who knows but either way its a gamble
Still flashing , thanks to odin & tw

[Q] HELP. Another Brick in the wall. Internal SD

Hello,
I consider myself a fairly technical person, and I recently had my phone lock up while running Nero V3 for my Samsung Vibrant. When I tried to reboot (battery pull) my internal SD was corrupted, so i decided to return to stock. I was not running any lag fixes at this time. Upon flashing to stock with Odin, I was greeted with a black screen and 4 lights. I've been trying everything to fix this. I saw that many people with the same issue have had luck flashing Eugene's Froyo that Doesn't Brick, and then flashing the JFD stock rom. I tried this as well, and have had no luck.
I am stuck. I don't know what to do. I have managed to load CWM recovery, and i can adb into the device, but when I try to push an update.zip, I get an I/O error.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm just not suer where to go from here. I really believe if I could just format and re-partition the internal SD, I would be able to get it all back...
Thanks.
When you say you flashed "eugenes froyo that doesn't brick", how did it not work? Were you able to get into download mode and odin the proper files? Did it error out?

If you are able to boot into clockwork recovery you can format your internal sdcard there. That should fix your corruption issue. After that I would boot into download mode and Odin stock JFD with re-partition clicked. Hopefully that gets you up and running. Then if you actually NEED any files from you internal sdcard (like pictures) there are programs out there that let you recover items off erased harddrives. Just be sure to do that before filling up your sdcard with new stuff. Hope this helps and good luck.
Eugene's Froyo that doesn't brick gave me an error, and I read that it was supposed to. So from there, I got into download mode and used Odin to install the JFD Stock Rom. Odin was always successful when it came to installing and rebooting my device.
Recovery "says" that it sucessfully formats my sd card, but the files remain, and I still cannot boot. When I use Odin to flash any other ROM, I get the same result. I either get a black screen with 4 lights, or it gets hung up on the Samsung Vibrant screen.
Also, I'm not concerned with any files on the internal SD.
If you can get into cwm recovery and download mode, you should be able to get out of this. Try to format sd from cwm as whitehawk suggested. Did jfd odin error out as well? Can you restore from cwm?

Didyou repartition in odin when you flashed back to stock or on eugene's froyo that doesnt brick?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes, I re-partitioned in Odin. I've tried several times, and the last time, I repartitioned on the stock ROM.
Thanks, NightHawkx! I am giving that a try now. crossing fingers...
ODIN says:
"<ID:0/010> Completed..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)"
Phone reboots, blank screen. All 4 buttons lit up when I tapped home. Nothing more.
I wonder if it's something wrong with my device. It seems like it should be reparable. I would rather not take it to T-mobile. I don't know what they'd so since it's been rooted and had custom roms.

You need to delete the jfd file and the 512 pit file from your computer and redownload them
I would be happy to try. Where should I get them from?
Also, is there a way to delete my Internal SD from my pc or adb?
Downloading now from Vibrant Bible Sticky post link.
Same result.
Try this fix and you should also take out your sim card and your external sd card
Same result.
I wonder if, since Nero is stuck on my phone, and the file system is unreachable, is there a way to load Nero on my phone? I can't from CMRecovery, I tried. Can I Odin a copy of that rom on there? Just long enough to remove the files and reflash?

I believe the key is you need to find a voodoo kernel you can push via odin. I searched a little and found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877800 If you scroll down in the OP you will find a section called "Downloads" the bold text in gold will link you to a voodoo .tar kernel.
Hope this helps
Hmm...maybe a dumb question...but did you wipe data in recovery before rebooting?

If the phone cannot get past the black screen, just delete the CWM zip and tell t-Mobile it just stopped working, they wont be able to get further than you and will give you a new phone.

Solution for random boot loop? (not from flashing)

I'm not noob to flashing or soft brick recovering but this has me confused...
I was running unNamed lastest for a lil while now. Everything was working fine until here recently, while stopped at a rest area checking a webpage my phone cut of and got stuck on a boot loop, only showing the kernal splash screen. Was like wtf? Tried pulling battery ,wiping cache and dalvik. No help. Was like that's fine, have a cwm back up from week ago. Nope didnt work. Was like ok let me try flashing something on my phone that's saved on sd. Flashed Miui, didn't work. Finally got back and tried using this Odin One click "Odin3 One-Click Downloader Stock I-777 UCKH7 with Root no BL" by entropy from the flashing without triggering flash counter guide. Still boot loops only showing the black Samsung Galaxy S II screen. This is after 3 what the odin says as 3 successful flash attempts.
I'm at my wits end, of all the soft bricking i've recovered from, where I assumed as long as a bad bootloader flash didn't happen and i could still get to download mode I'm fine, it could be fixed. But this has me stumped.
*After going into 3e recovery and trying to wipe data, it won't even now go back into 3e recovery. Attempts to but says something like deleting cryption meta data or something of that nature.
-confused-

The one-click downloader is NOT from me, it's a repack of my tar file - and it's starting to sound like the one-click is doing something weird and not flashing the kernel properly.
Use regular old Odin (or Heimdall) to flash the raw tar package.
I'll try it. Though I don't understand how I am in the position I am in from browsing the web on my phone to directly going into a hootloop that neither that odin one click will fix, or any cwm roms won't fix.

I won't have access to computer till later today but I'm trying to figure out what could be wrong. I was thinking that maybe my partitions were bad, but doesn't that odin used, repartition, using a pit file (think that is what pit is for)? Although, this was not from a flash, but rebooted from a couple weeks old successful flash of unNamed while browsing the web so I don't see how that can be the problem. However, even if the partitions were bad, wouldn't odin fail a flash because it has no where to send the firmware files? Also if it was a type of hardware failure, such as processor, wouldn't it not even show the kernel Galaxy S II splash screen? Or is this something that only the gpu handles? It was able to get into cwm before I used the odin though so I can't believe it's cpu because I'm sure that recovery should use it. Just can't figure it out, never had a problem with a boot loop a flash couldn't fix.
If I can't get it to work, will flashing a stock kernel with cwm increment the flash counter? If not I guess I could access my internal sd, try and pull my pictures and the roms off there and then send it to warranty. However I really don't want to. Thanks to anyone in advance.

Ok so after flashing the odin file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 it is still bootlooping at splash screen.
I'm not sure what my options are right now. I'm pretty sure bootloaders can't be the problem. I can't re-partition from odin because it says it can't open the specified file "(Line: 1828)". Is this because it doesn't have pit file? I don't understand how this problem manifested.
If I need to pull contents from sd card from cwm, will flashing a cwm kernal increment flash counter?
Don't repartition using a PIT, it's a great way to screw up your phone. (Hopefully you haven't flashed a PIT at all yet... If you have, I don't quite know what's going on.)

Will try to help, but will need more specific information.
The OP of this thread started bootlooping while checking a web page in his browser. So, how did it happen for you? Please give as much exact information as possible. Was it after a flash? Or did it start while you were using the phone? Or how?
Mine was connected to an aftermarket car charger while it happened. I read a post somewhere and a couple ppl it happened to believed the same thing, since it was in my 30 day trail period I sent it back to Sams club and got my replacement today. Since I didn't have a jig at the time, I didn't want to flash a cwm kernel and increase my flash counter so I lost some pics of my kids.
Not sure if it was charger related but I couldn't find a fix and wouldn't really call myself a noob at flashing. Might have some things to learn nut far from a noob.

Attempted flash of a 4Gs rom to Vibrant!

Well as the title states i have a Vibrant in my hand that someone attempted to flash a Galaxy S 4g rom to. After finding out the issue and getting the phone back using Odin i have access to everything again.
I have recovery , download, and can boot back into os, but when the phone boots it gets to where it is loading the sd cards and it resets.
I have tried it with the SD card out, and sim card removed i have reflashed i have searched.. and now im finally conceding defeat and need help.
I KNOW there is a Vibrant update file in the onboard memory in the System/Bin but i thought a hundred hard resets and a few odin sweeps would have killed it..
Help please..
Another sweep with odin on a new cable and a new jar and its golden! Time to dig back in and do it right this time
I am having the same issue. I can not get into recovery to install a new rom. Who do I need to do? Help please

Flashing 4G ROM = very bad. They have different partitions. Mistakes happen.

[Q] Rooted and Semi-Bricked

Hi,
I am pretty new to rooting though i read a lot and watched a lot of videos before rooting my samsung galaxy note gt-7000
i was installing cm9.1 stable and followed the directions from the cyanogenmod page here [EDIT: outside links not allowed]
I downloaded the hardcore CWM and heimdall suite
Did everything till step 4 , followinf step 5 i started getting a missing .dll file error
re installing vc++ didnt help.
Then i installed the zImage file from the CWM with the help of odin
Everything worked and i flashed the new CM 9.1 and rebooted my phone
i put the cm 9.1.zip file on the sd card and flashed the rom.
the phone did not detect the 11GB internal SD card so i thought maybe i should try re flashing the rom
I went into recovery mode and ther is no CWM recovery mode on my android now , only the stock android download target screen appears
I say semi bricked because After rebooting it gives the" com. android .phone" is not working error
I tried re installing the Zimage file with odin and it installs easily but when i reboot into recovery mode CWM doesn't show up
Can't use my phone and can't re root!
Please Help!
ok i somehow got cwm working again and the com error is gone
but the problem of my internal storage not showing up is still there
now, its not even detecting the external sd card
So i have lost access to both the memories
Can't Anyone help??
ok after no help from anywhere i showed my phone at samsung service center
they surprisingly had no clue about rooting , but then i got a call from a rep telling me that the motherboard needs to be replaced for about 180$!!!

May be I'm a little late with this reply. But if you have not paid the $180 yet, Can try flashing the samsung stock rom from sammobile.com and try flashing it through odin using the download mode on the phone. If it still didn't work, also try flashing the correct PIT file along with the ROM from odin. See if either of this helps you in getting the internal memory working.

Thank you so much for the info, i am downloading the stock firmware now, where can i get the matching Pit file withe stock firmware
Ill get back to you when i try the stock rom
