Loving my Galaxy SIII so far, but I have one 'gripe'. Is it just me, or does the GSIII take a long time to charge fully using the included charger/cable? I only have limited experience with this, but this morning I ran it down to about 2%, then powered down and put it on the charger and after a couple hours it was just at 69%, which really surprised me. I expected it to be (nearly) full after a couple hours.
I'm coming from an (original) Evo, which was rooted running CM7 and it always charged quickly on any wall charger. Not sure if that was a 'feature' of the ROM, or that's just how the battery was?
Anyway, what have you noticed about how long it takes to charge your phone? Long time? About right? Anything I can do to speed the charging?
Thanks!

Yea, I fully charged it on Wednesday, and then powered on and activated it Thursday. That was the first time I fully discharged and charged. Could have something to do with it, you think?
I noticed that the OEM (charger it shipped with) also is a bit on the slow side, but sicne I typically am charging over night it doesn't bother me. I have many microUSB chargers but I haven't messed around with others yet.
Wow, I just used it for the first time last night and I thought it charged up pretty fast. And this was with me watching youtube videos and exploring the phone while it was on the charger.
Aren't slower chargers typically better for batteries?

The GS3 has a bigger battery than the og evo. I'm not sure how big it is but it is definitely smaller than the GS3. So maybe you're just used to the evo battery charge time.

That could be the case? I ran it down to 15% yesterday, turned it off, and let it charge for an hour a day it crept up to 58%. Disappointing, but it sounds like this is normal? At least it doesn't guzzle battery!

Hi guys
I'm an iphone 3gs owner at the mo but my contract is up in a week and after doing A LOT of research over the past 3 weeks, i was pretty much decided that the GS2 was gonna be my next phone.
Then i foolishly visited the xda forums! lol (in fairness, it probably still will be my next phone).
But seriously though, setting aside the various issues some people are clearly having (reboots, battery drain, etc) what shocked me the most was hearing about the low-powered charging mechanism (apologies if i've gotten this slightly wrong).
I've heard that it only charges at ~650mah, but that the phone can easily surpass this under load (~850mah?), meaning that you could be charging the phone at the same time as using it, only to find the battery going DOWN. Can someone confirm if this is true? If it is, then i'm gobsmacked that Samsung could make such a c0ck-up. Imagine if you're using the GPS (a real battery hog) while driving (and plugged-in to the ciggy lighter) only to find that the battery dies before you get to your destination! lol. I've heard about the heat this puppy produces, i wonder did they limit the juice to stop it from burning a hole through the floor
Even though i'm bored to t1ts with my iphone (and i hate apple), what i love about it is that when i don't actually use the phone for extended periods of the day (which is quite often, due to work) it still retains it's charge really well (i get insanely good battery life). I would be really annoyed if i found the GS2 battery dropping any more than, say, 30% over the course of a busy working day (say 9am to 7pm) with virtually no use.
So, to finally get to my point! My iphone charges REALLY fast. I'm worried that it will take a stupidly long time to fully charge the GS2. Can some kind person please do an experiment for me, and see how long it takes theirs to fully charge (from fully dead to 100%) with the screen off and the phone not doing anything major in the background?
Also, it would be good to know how this compares to the GS2's competitors.
Sorry for the long post guys!
my phone is at 33% at 8:08
Will let you know how I get on. I have it on charge now
I think mine takes around 3 hours from empty using samsungs supplied charger but I will try to do a test for a more accurate time. How does this compare to the iphone?
Yep mine takes about 3 hours as well from empty to about 90% using the wall charger, then it goes on trickle charge the rest of the way. This is on standby as well.
Yepp takpes about 3 hours to get fully charged. however, i've been using the phone as a wifi hotspot all the time and yes, it increases charging time but it doesn't really matter when it takes so long anyways

It takes almost 3.5-4 hours to charge it with stock charger from empty to full.
It takes a bit more than 5 hours to charge from empty full using USB charging in my laptop.
Found out the hard way:
Charging with original EU charger AND heavy use (downloading, Wifi tethering, map ops etc.) MADE it drain faster than charging.
Two nights before left it during night with orig. charger and made it in 8 hrs only to 84% while on.
With Hama 0,8 amps charger full in 2hrs from empty and stays full even with heavy work.
NO heat issue though !
Methinks the charger is crap

if you look thru the battery driver source code, samsung capped the charging at 650 mA it seems. not sure why, other android phones use the full 1 amp.
so samsung either saw a heat problem and lowered it, or that's just the way they do their phones charging. who knows.

Wow, ok. As someone who uses 3G a lot when our internet connection goes down (all too often), I hope the charge will end up keeping up with the battery drain. Otherwise I'll be tempted to change that source and probably end up frying my phone (if it ever gets in stock :|)
Thanks for the info
So i am a recent convert coming from a RAZR and would like to know whats the best way to train the battery. The RAZR was horrible.
What do you mean train it?
I think he means as far as calibrate it from the beginning. Usually when I take a phone outta the box ill let the battery dir from there. No immediate charge. And then ill charge it and let it completely die 3 times. Done that with all my devices in the past few years and usually works like a charm. But when root comes we can add battery tweaks and such. My battery right now isn't too bad, but my EVO 3D was a lil better. I love this frkken phone

The app battery calibration from the market works well too
I have noticed that when looking in the battery usage monitor it seems that the battery hits full charge then drops to 96% and hits full charge again about ten times a night. Kind of bizarre, and probably contributing to the battery life being shorter. Also noticed that the 2750mah battery is read as 2720mah on multiple extended batteries.

After flashing a Rom you have to calibrate battery by letting it drain fully and then fully recharge so can't be that hurtful. Now letting it sit at 0% for 5 hours is not such a good idea.

Do most of you guys keep your phones plugged in (charging) as long as you are around a USB port/wall outlet or not? Unless I buy a battery booster, I don't like the thought of my phone being any less than topped off in the event that I can't charge it for a while. I'm aware that the battery can't be over-charged, but keeping it at 100% so much of the time doesn't seem like a good way to treat it. :/

My point is... The battery is not going to last forever to begin with. If I get 12 months out of the battery that is 6 months longer than I would have used the device the battery is powering

Everything you do with your phone stresses your battery.
Point being... As reverepats said... For the first few charges its good to drain it down then full charge it back up. Your not hurting the battery in such a way its going to noticeably shorten the life span.
This by the way doesnt do much for the battery itself... More for the OS. The OS compiles statics on usage, etc... This helps the OS "learn" the battery.
Now to counter point I made above...
The OS will also learn the battery over time... By doing cycle charges you are only speeding it up some. I still recommend cycle charging. I try to do it about once a week.
The best way to train/calibrate the battery in my opinion is to charge it till the green notification light comes on with the phone on. Then unplug the charger from the phone and then turn off the phone. Once it is completely off plug it back into the charger and charge it until the green notification light comes on. Then unplug the charger from the phone and then turn on the phone. Once the phone is done booting up and everything is loaded and what not then charge it till the green notification light comes on and then unplug it and you have now successfully trained/calibrated your battery.
I did this with my Rezound when I first got it and when I got my extended battery and the phone lasts me 24-36 hours with moderate use and Juice Defender installed. I hope this helps

First off, 58% to 77% in 3-4 hours is terrible... you should be able to fully charge from 15%-100% in 4 hours (or really close to 100%).
You could have one or more of a handful problems here...
1) Your charging source is putting out less than 1A (1000mA)
2) Your USB cable is bad
3) Your charging port is bad
4) You have an app that is seriously sucking the battery to the point it is draining at a higher rate than your charger can output
5) You have a defective batter
I would install GSAM or BetterBatteryStats for more info on the charging current (1000mA at the charger usually equates to 500ma-650ma at the battery) and any apps which are draining the battery quickly.
I would try another known good microUSB cable and charger, most from newer smartphones will work, you don't have to have an HTC charger (I use one from a Samsung, LG, Pantech, and Motorolas all the time, as long as they output 1000mA or higher)
Replace the battery, especially if you haven't done so in a long time... typically the battery should be replaced every 12-24 months, so if you have never done that you should.
If all that fails, then it is probably the USB port or the phone itself.
I just got my cradle and it took 4 hours for my battery to charge. Is that how long it's supposed to take?

Your phone will never truly fully discharge the battery (safety measure) it has to save enough to shut down properly. So that is part of it... I don't know if the cradle is set up to fast charge either... I doubt it, considering the phone should last longer than four hours any way. I'm happy to have a FREE extra battery, and cradle... It charges the battery, that's all I'm really looking for... I you are unhappy with it, I suppose you could send it back...

No such thing is happening. Please do not spread misinformation.
It charges slower than the phone because it does not have Quick Charge, it's a very simple charger. Label says it puts out 1.6A at 4.4V, which means the battery probably charges at about 1A on average. Charging is never 100% efficient and charging does not progress in a linear fashion, it slows down past 80% to near-trickle, otherwise the battery would overheat.
Chargers don't discharge batteries to charge them. This isn't 1990 and our battery isn't NiCad.
I just don't know why they're calling it a cradle. You're not resting your device on it. Those are cradles, this is a battery charger.
THIS is a cradle: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ue&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A1LWHYTZATVG8I
However, this thread is otherwise interesting, I've used my battery charger for a few cycles, meh, it charges my spare battery overnight.
I know this is an older thread, but what's the experience with this cradle? I just got a used V10 on Swappa with this cradle and it does seem like it's taking a while to charge. I have no problem with how long it's taking, but I need to know if it's defective so I can do something about it on Swappa.

It doesn't have fast charging like the phone itself... It's fine.
Common sense isn't all that common
Hello guys, I bought this phone recently and I don't know if I'm having an issue or not.
The phone charges unusually fast either with the fast charger that came in the box or a normal one I have laying around. Even when fast charging neither the phone nor the charger get hot (the charger just a bit warm but that's it). I use a USB c cable I bought a while ago, not the one that came with the device, but it's supposedly a good quality one.
The thing is that the battery is understandingly discharging pretty fast. What could be the issue here? The cable? Battery calibration?

Way shorter than it's estimate. With a fast charger, from 50% to full in about 30 minutes, and that getting a bit warm. Not even the charger gets hot. With a normal charger it doesn't take much longer. Those are the things that seem suspicious to me.
