[Q] Why Should I Care About the Custom Binary Counter? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Coming from HTC phones and an ASUS Transformer I've never heard of this before. This is my first Samsung rooted phone. Every time you flash a custom ROM or Kernel this count goes up. So what? I guess my warranty could be voided, but other that???

If you don't care about voiding your warranty you have no issues

That's pretty much it. Only noobs worry about this.
Anyway, some awesome dev will come up with a way to reset the counter, just like my other samsung phones, ie triangle away.

I think people take this way too seriously.... When the SGS2 came out last year , I had to do a warranty exchange after only having the phone for a couple months. I was worried about returning my phone since it was rooted and I had flashed a butt load of ROM's. They sent me a new phone and I had to return mine in the same package. I was scared that samsung would totally go over the phone with a fine toothed comb and find that I had voided the warranty. Maybe I got lucky because nothing ever happened. Just my 2 cents, but when you send your warranty covered phone to Samsung, I doubt they take the time to check. Just return it to stock and dont have any signs of tweaking to it. Peace

It's on HTC phones too, and they can reset the counter.

What is the deal with the flash counter?

What is the deal with the flash counter? Why would I not want to increase it? Are there any negative effects?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
It shows you have voided your warranty through root or custom software.

I do not worry about flash counter, i have 2 Samsung phones replaced with 20 or more on each phone. Cell provider did not look at them at all

I have had rooted with custom ROM phones replaced when I bricked them. Do these counters change the game? Has anyone with a note with a non zero counter had theirs replaced via warranty?

I'm sorry to bump but has anyone else had any experience with this?
I just sent my phone back to have a stuck pixel repaired and I forgot to reset the flash counter. I only flashed it once.
I'm hella-nervous.
You guys need to search more.
[Reset Flash Counter Thread]
I'm not sure who deal with the returns, whether its Samsung directly or just ATT. I would presume its ATT since you can go to once of their warehouses directly to do any warranty exchanges. Prevents you from waiting upwards of a week for an exchange thru mail.
I've swapped out my Atrix 4G twice, both times with root AND bootloader unlocked. Both phones actually displayed the word "unlocked" on the main boot screen and there was no way to rid the text off the screen. Obviously...that voids your warranty. However it never affected any of my swaps.
So in short, I'm not sure if anyone has had their exchanges denied, but I'd like to know. This is my first Samsung device.

supposedly it doesn't matter but I would, not trying to take any chances with returns or warranty
Just curious a to why you are exchanging it for a new one on the last day of the return period? Is there actually anything wrong with it?

Yes, you will have to return your phone to stock, and flash the counter.
I have returned 2 already. The first one was in store as it was the first week and I hard bricked it to where it would not power on or anything. It was already rooted but I had not flashed a rom. I returned it without issue.
The second one was 2 days past the 30 day return period and my speaker blew (never seen that one beofre) and it sounded like a dry rotted kraggar from the 80's. This one was rooted and flashed, I just mailed it back as is and this to was without issue.
Probably a good idea to go back to stock though, and I probably will next time since I was worried, LOL.

[Q] What happened to my screen and what can I do to fix it?

Hi XDA people,
I bought my Galaxy S3 2 weeks ago and I discovered this morning a crack on the left side of the screen.
It's small, but quite annoying when you spend more than 500 euros in something like this.
I have attached a picture of the crack.
I've never had a crack like that on a phone before (my 2 years old HTC Desire screen is perfect and has been through a lot...).
It looks weird to me as there's no impact. I don't know where this is from.
It never felt or hit anything.
If anybody here has an idea about what caused this, I'm interested. I suspect a defect.
Next question is: what can I do?
I'm using JB already so my warranty is probably void.
Is there a way to make sure the crack won't get bigger?
Thank you for your help.
You're warranty is not void, flash the original stock Rom with Odin. Before that use triangle away to rest flash counter. After the flash check that your flash counter is at 0.
And send the phone to warranty. Wait for and confirmation from someone more experienced. But this is how I sent my old note to repair center.

Some of Galaxy S3 is cheaply made.
Exactly, but make sure use STOCK rom preferably for your country and use Triangle away (id recommend uninstalling it afterwards) ..Good luck!
Thanks for your replies.
I will restore to stock ROM and reset the flash counter.
If I send it to a repair center, will they fix it for free?
Rooted or not rooted has nothing to do with the cracked. Most probably Sammy going to blame on your careless. Good luck though.

Take it back to where you got it and they should fix for free or give you another new one

Help

Well I have heard two different stories and its time I had the answer to which is real. The main thing I hear is that rooting automatically voids your warranty. The other thing I found out late last night in a chat with a Samsung support rep in the live chat and found out that they will repair the phone if the cause of the problem is not the root. If it is the cause , money will be charged. I really want to root and keep warranty so which one is real?

[Q] Warranty replacement

My screen on my s4 busted. I used my dad's update to get a note 3 cause he wouldn't use his update (likes his flip dumb phone). My question is even though my s4 is not hooked up can I still use my warranty to get it fixed?

Submit either the Asurion Claim or Warranty now.
If you wait too long they will assume that the phone is no longer an active part of the account.
Right now you can claim you are using a loaner until the other is fixed.
Thanks, if I knew someone in my area that likes to root and rom there phone I would get it fixed locally and sell it to them cause is still on mdk but since I don't and don't want to sell it online I'll just warranty it and sell it brand new and get more money for it.

Also would like to know how to check if I tripped knox or anything like that but when I go into download mode there is nothing there about knox. Is it cause I'm on mdk with everything still unlocked and will show when i odin back to mdk or did knox come after mdk? I guess the worst that could happen is they send my phone back to me but just wanted some more insight on it.

MDK doesn't have the Knox Warranty Void flag.
Wow! You responded quick! Thanks! That's what I figured. I may try to send it back with mdk still on it so maybe a fellow rooter will stumble upon it as a refurbish. LOL!
