Head over to settings, about phone, system updates to grab now!
yep, just downloaded it. then thought that maybe I should revert to a non safestrap system and uninstall Safestrap. Now for some reason I am having to re-download it... Oh well, Im about to have an official ICS update!
Now I gotta worry about rerooting, and I was thinking about running a rom like eclipse. Big day lol
I'm fastbooting back to stock in hopes I'll get a nice smooth update, does anyone know of any root methods that work on the official ICS build?
I assume u are all in the US.im in SOUTH AFRICA. GSM handset, just got the 2.3.6 update, but not going to install it. Want to skip straight to ICS. Any links for GSM ICS leaks?

there was an option for it in Matt's Utility... haven't tried it yet to excited that I finally got the ICS
Is this official ota different from the .211 leak? If it is, is there going to be a way for us that are running .211 to manually update to the ota? Since they had to fix some bugs I figured there was a new build date and all.

Download OTA Rootkeeper from the play store, it restored my root when i upgraded on razr maxx
Downloaded and went smooth as silk. Phone was rooted and I installed rootkeeper. Was in root state when I received the update. All suggested battery saver apps were disabled. Phone still downloaded the update. Downloaded with WIFI. The update removed root but rootkeeper rerooted the phone. The only think I had to do was change the data back to 4G. Everything seems great so far.
i have updated
yes you are right ics update now availble iam from Egypt and now i enjoy ics
its really smooth but the cam is not as clear as gingbread and not fast shot
if someone can helpe mer to give me kernel

So, what happens to a rooted phone when the official update to ics comes out? Will you be able to update through Verizon, or will a dev need to work on it first? I know there are some great ics roms out there already, but what if you wanted to try the stock update? My wife also has a rezound and she won't let me "mess" with hers.
Thanks!

use ruu and go back to stock for the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466474
go here and do #1~3
for #3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...5&postcount=58
go here and download and use this file
this one is the lastest stock ruu.
One of two options:
1. If you are already rooted, wait for a Dev to build a ROM based on the OTA so you can safely flash it.
2. You can unroot/relock your phone to accept the OTA update.
The problem with # 2 is the current methods to achieve root may not work on the updated software so it is possible to be stuck without root for awhile (unless someone finds a work-around).
The way I understand it is simple. You will be able to upgrade to a rooted is rom, however you will not be able to update the radios if you are s-on. I'm Gonna hold out. There will be an unlock tool after ics drops...whether same day or eventually.
A rooted version of the OTA rom will be released within a couple hours of the OTA.
I'm going to be trading my nexus for a razr maxx. What should I look out for to make sure that this device is STOCK and is on the OTA path? Any other spots or defects I should know about before taking the plunge and avoid a lemon?
Not sure I understand your concerns, but if it's a brand new device out of the box you will be just fine.

Well I'm trading with a guy off Craigslist and I want to make sure he didn't screw up rooting / unlocking it and that's why he's trading it
Even if he did screw up something, the fastboot files are available to return to the current stock version. Also, the current stock version can be rooted.
So no matter what boot loader or radio a razr is on it can be returned to factory stock and on the OTA route?
Is the stock razr build on 2.3.5 or 2.3.6?
Sorry for the paranoia but my friend has a bionic and he's had problems with the whole rooting thing

The maxx is fantastic. You can just RSD it to. 173. You can install the ics leak if you would like and still be able to RSD it back to. 173 when a better ota drops.
Extremely easy to root. Cwm isn't really necessary for you to have a great phone. Even stock is nice
Well thank you all for the great info, Are there any other things I should
Look at before trading? Going back to GB is going to be a bummer but I need a phone to last me all day, damnit!
Just look forward to having amazing battery life! I actually did the exact same switch you did and haven't looked back. I installed an ICS rom though and it runs smooth as butter.

I think I avg 6 + hours screen on time and usually charge every 18 ish hours. You won't be dissatisfied. I may not have all the apps some people do but I use the crap out of my phone. The maxx is everything you heard and more. I'm getting these times on the ics leak.
So far I'm loving the battery life, however my device is on 173 and not 181, and the update button says I'm on the latest version... any way to force the update or should I stay patient?

You're on the latest version. .181 has not been pushed out yet. I'm actually a part of the soak group, but have not gotten the OTA.

I forgot to say that I am on the ics leak and am getting the ridiculous battery life I was posting. If you can't wait flash the leak. Can always rsd back and be on the path once the latest ics drops. So far so good here. Just have to do the basic maintenance apps and only freeze apps unless you really decide they are in your way. If your rooted and on .173 just freeze them. If an update become available make sure you don't have a recovery installed, while the update is downloading get ota root keeper if you don't already have it, temp unroot and unfreeze all those apps. Then accept the update. Restore root w ota root keeper and your good to go
Not to detract from XDA but a whole crap load of dev work is going on over at droidrzr.com and droidhive.com.
The razr at this time has some of the best dev's in the business. I'd stay on 173 stock and either install the ICS leak w/ DroidTh3ory's ICS leak mod and ICS leak bootstrap or stay on 173, root, install hashcode's safestrap and run Dhacker's Axiom ICS ROM or Kejar's Gummy rom.

ETA: I read that reply wrong. My apologies, but none the less read what I wrote below this if you want to install the ICS leak. Sorry about that.
To properly install the ICS leak you can't temp unroot. OP, just go over to the droidrzr site and go to this thread.....

Updated: 18-May-2012
Noticeable diffrence is that RAZR and RAZR MAXXX in USA will get the ICS update in Q2. Before the update it was still in development stage!
Last information in Germany is the end of June, when the Maxx is going to sell in shops.
It was looking more and more like the May 21st - 23rd rollout was the real deal with the latest leaks, but this just made it REALLY real... Time will tell, but I'm rolling back to 181 now, to be safe...
Thanks for posting OP! I'm a giddy lil b!#@h all over again!

When it is available OTA, should I just use Matt's utility 1.51 to AP Fastboot back to 173 to get the OTA (currently on Eclipse ROM .173 base)? All I need to do is titanium backup, use option 1 on his utility, then root it, ota rootkeeper, then ota it right?
Do I uninstall bootstrapper or will the fastboot back to 173 take care of that?
I was already having a great day, last day as a sophomore in school, and now hearing /official/ RAZR ICS news...best day since getting this phone!

You'll need to let it update to 181 first, then to ICS. I'm not sure about retaining root, I went back to plain unrooted stock. Matt's tool was what I used to roll back, but I was running the 75 ICS leak. If you're running 84+, you may be stuck with it for a bit...

roll out in Q2 means it will be within the next 6 weeks to meet that, which makes that verizon screen grab look real, Here to hoping for OTA ICS within the week. Been sitting on bone stock Gingerbread since I got the phone in february waiting for official ICS before I did anything. I'm doing a manual update check every night so I can grab it as soon as possible.
What does all this mean for us GSM RAZR owners North of the boarder? Should we be able to get this update prior to our carriers release. Haven't heard anything about ICS hitting Rogers customers.

I've never rooted, but might need to in the next 4 weeks. Should I go through the process of:
Root...install root keeper...then unroot awaiting the OTA roll-out?
Or will there likely be root available for stock OTA ICS within a week or so after its roll out?
Also, with prior OTA updates my apps remained installed. With ICS will I have to manually re-install all apps? this would be another reason to root, as Titanium is better than the non-root options for back-up of apps and data.
The main reason I want to be rooted is that I'm hoping to get my Droid Razr to work with a UK sim while abroad. Otherwise, I generally happy with stock, and have so many apps that I worry about going too custom.

Well Rootkeeper worked on keeping root when updating to the ICS leak, so I assume it will work when downloading the official ICS OTA.
If it doesn't a root method will probably surface in a week.
I doubt the official OTA will make you get rid of your apps, just the leak cause of incompatibility issues or something.
Just when I finished my angers course, I saw this post.

If you use the ota root keeper (2 apps that I know of on play) it will temp unroot your phone then restore root after update.
Short answer, no, as you are right now, just use one if the ota root keeper apps on play store.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
WHY do the ota the just wait probably not even a day one of the great devs will have a working build based off the ota soon. you will probably have to wait for the kernel since it does not seem likely moto will release source at the same time.
To get an OTA you need to be stock release.
You can be rooted but you cannot remove any bloat that you could not have removed without root.
So if the Golf game is missing, that is okay. If VZNav is missing, the OTA won't install.
So if you are on any custom ROM, the OTA will fail.
If you don't have the stock recovery, the OTA will fail.
If you have removed bloat, by being rooted, the OTA will fail.
Hey Im I'm running my Verizon RAZR on cricket and after jumping to the jb leak a month ago I just recieved a new ota update on my phone and now I none of my custom ROMs work. I tried each one with multiple wipe and still nothing can anybody shed some light on the situation? I will attempt to go back to the leak version and grab the update info for whoever want or need to know what it is wish me luck I have a lot of moto/ cricket flashing to do
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
The official ota jb changes kernels that's why the ROMs won't work.
