So I ask, what is the point of even running Android on this thing? We can't change the OS from source, so why did Google even bother? Seems like they just want to make it fail...
Well birdman got cwm working sooo....

I think it is definitely too soon to say for sure the AOSP will not support the Q. Only a hand full have been released. There is also the fact that JBQ probably knows as many tech specs about the device as we do. The first step would probably to get in contact with someone on the team who built it. Keep in mind that for a long time the XOOM wasn't supported in AOSP but it is now. Let's wait a bit and see what happens.

AOSP is possible. All the Q needs is some Jellybean, which it's being updated to. It's on Android 4.0.4, but will gain Youtube, Gmail, and other GAPP's soon. The CM Dev for my phone hacked his Q, and had it running like a desktop. Chrome, and a Wireless KB/Mouse via USSB dongle. The Q is a very capable device, but what? I not really sure? As far as I see, it can be a nice PC replacement. But just basic computing. Nothing more. Internet, Facebook, Gmail, Netflix, etc.

If that is true then I can definitely see this being hooked up to TVs in living rooms for use, and then I might consider in the future getting one in the foreseeable future.
While the Q looks very sleek and sexy, $299 is a hefty price for such a basic computing device. Remember: the Raspberry Pi costs only $35 (plus SD card, Plus PSU, plus case) and it can do full 1080p playback as well.

I myself pre-ordered one (should ship in august). This will definatelly be a nice toy and I think it could be made to do all things the Nexus Q does. I paid 45,23€ for the device including a case as I have an 8GB SD Card and a Blackberry charger lying around anyways. Admittedly, compared to the Nexus Q it's not even nearly as nice looking, but it's a lot cheaper and has the possibility of doing everything the Q does, plus more.

Because of nice looking and such things... perhaps in a few months we will get some bricked Nexus Q devices for some bucks and will then be able to integrate our RPi into that case? ;-)

i believe they got a launcher working on the Q and a couple of apps too like netflix so its to early. CWM is out already for it so..........
I've seen launchers and apps have been side loaded onto it and that definitely increases its appeal to me. I think one major issue is actually controlling the device but that's just a matter of a remote control app.
Also, I haven't seen anything about CWM. Care to share a link on that?

Planned on using it as a business tool but nothing that I currently use interfaces easily with it. Nice for watching vids, a bit of surfing although it seems to have issues rendering quickly a lot of sites and for looking cool but it just ain't cutting it. I don't even carry it with me any more.
Not yet
So far I'm still enjoying it, I'm glad I didn't get a 7" tablet.
I still enjoy my PC more. Yesterday I installed Win8 on my laptop, for a pre beta it runs well. Hope we can install in the future on the TouchPad.
There's always a solution...develop some apps. This is XDA after all, not noobcentral.com
Not me, just got ubuntu on my tp and oced it to 1.728 with all performance patches installed. Mobile Flash games run FLAWLESSY on the browser. m.kongregate.com
What did everyone expect when buying it? With everyone getting "tired" of things so fast, its no wonder companies play with us the way they do. They know with the new "oooh its shiny!" Loads of cash will be but down no matter what unfished state its in at launch. I like my TP for what I use it for, tweaked it and its perfectly adequate. Then again I didn't get it expecting it to be an ipad or Galaxy tab. WebOS has potential still and the fact that they embraced their homebrew community from the git go is testament in my eyes. Patience (yeah, these days that's a laugh)

No. The ones who are tired of webos have surveyed the landscape and realize that there is nothing much to delve deeper into. When an os doesn't have a fully functional browser or ereader, no amount of delving is going to change this. Also, some of us who are tired of it bought it to run android, and don't feel like wasting time trying to fix such a broken os. When you have to edit code to get network shares mounted and even then have to pay 8 dollars for an app that will play videos, its not worth my time when my android phone and ipad does it flawlessly and free.

Installed the official CM9 two nights ago and I really can't find anything more than nitpicking at this point. Sure the home screen transition is still not quite as smooth as my wife's iPhone 4, but it is smooth enough and all the apps/games I have tried are fast enough, battery life is also incredible as I got over 4 hours screen time on wifi for my first full charge.
I have compared my device against Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, and there is no question the performance difference at this point is not worth the extra screen size to me. It is really amazing what a cohesive (no touchwiz dialer + ICS task manager mesh mash, CM9 is completely refined!) and bloat free experience CM9 is. Even the official ICS ROM after de-bloating still has too many Samsung applications for my taste.
More importantly, mobile phone applications are not desktop programs, you are not going to run Photoshop or Visual Studio on your Galaxy Note, you are not likely to play Crisis. I really believe dual core for mobile phone is very very similar to core 2 duo on desktops, that once you reach a certain level of performance, you just don't need any more upgrades. My wife and I both have 5 year old core 2 duo's and with a very modest Nvidia 9600 GT, I can still play most if not all of the mainstream games. Sure I can't play them at highest graphic details, but I can still enjoy Skyrim or Diablo 3.
I think the exact scenario is happening to mobile devices. All the top apps/games have to cater to the lowest common denominator, unless you are super hardcore, you will be satisfied. In the past people had to upgrade for performance, but I don't think it is the case anymore. I will wait out the full two year contract and pick up Note 2 when it is on sale for a discount, unless there is a hardware failure. And I think manufacturers will also see the same problem, that it will be harder and harder to get existing users to upgrade.
A big thank you to the developers! The Cyanogen team is amazing!
Im gonna be flashing tomorrow cm9 cant wait

Ya, cm has always been nice. They usually have that extra bit of polish and professionalism. Aokp is decent too.
As far as buying new devices, there will always be people wanting to upgrade to the latest and greatest even if what they have is still completely adequate. Being an EE technology major, I'm one of those people who will buy new stuff just because I love technology. And Moore's law says it will keep getting better lol. If I can ever get a fng job, I'll definitely buy the note 2 if its awesome enough.
Everyone has computers, but most people never upgrade them to keep up with the times, they wait til they've crippled it after a few years then buy a new one. I've gotten so many nice computers that were "broken" from people, only to open them up, clean them out, reinstall whatever os I need and have it be perfectly fine for years. Usually just a fan or seating issue with some hardware.
Sidetracked, sorry.

I saw this thread regarding CM9, but it looks like they only have beta-ish nightlies available. Haven't tried them myself.
I installed h0tw1r3's CM9 based ROM (here) and it is really beautiful.
I wanted to add that I completely agree with OP. This is my first Android phone, and I knew the power of custom ROM's in the past from using Windows Mobile 5/6. I tried several that were all pretty nice, but coming across the CM9 ROM, I feel like it really lives up to the hype. Gorgeous, polished, fast as hell!
Thanks to CM team and XDA, you guys rock.
Yeah I was under the impression that there was nothing official yet.

I am always amazed at how CM9 has the extra little touches that make a phone really work optimally like wake on volume, put screen to sleep[in notification pull down], included toggles, etc. For some reason unknown to me other ROM developers never include most of these but IMHO they make the Note really useful.
So why is there nothing on their website if this is official? Not a final release?
Also, does the cm team run on donations just like must devs?

I think CM9 is not ready for prime time on the note. Checking the use internal SD in the storage setting forces it into a boot loop. Definely will have to wait until fixed. This is for the 7-16 nightly.
I love cm9 too.. Very fast and smooth no lag only had one little bump so far.. I run cm9 on my note and my galaxy tab 2
I would love to use cm9 but im an avid user of bell mobile tv. If there is a way to get both, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks

Just delete the rom manager app inside the zip before flash and there you go, no more ROM manager.. are you kidding?! why waste perfect screen real estate for emulated keys? Sure the screen could go all the way to the bottom without any hard keys but unless they create a screen with a built in speaker there will always be a space at the top of the phone for that and they balanced the look of the phone by centering the screen AND including keys so that 100% of the LCD is usable. Go get in line with the sheep for that iPhone and sell your note to someone more appreciative of a fully customizable phone

You either love it or hate it.
I'm using it now, and at first when the developer preview came out, I absolutely hated it.
The more and more that I use it, I started liking it.
I've been using it since it came out officially, and it's pretty good.
As long as your laptop/computer manufacturer puts out the proper drivers for Windows 8, it's great.
Acer released the trackpad driver for W8 for my laptop and I love the quick shortcuts. (Swipe from left to change Apps, Swipe from top to show quick options, swipe from right to get sidebar.)
It's pretty nice, although, I wish I had a touchscreen.
Sorry for the really long post, but if you have questions about it, I'm willing to answer them. Been using it for a long time..
I tried it, hated it. Microsoft needs to stop trying to shove a touchscreen OS onto my desktop.
It's a great tablet interface but very very terrible for a mouse and keyboard.
If Microsoft would have just added an option to disable metro they would have avoided a lot of the negative press and I would be all over it.

I paid the money for it. It's just Windows 7 with a better task manager and file transfer dialogs. No complaints here.
I still prefer linux. I just have to have a Windows box for work related stuff. I don't understand everyone's complaints about the new start menu. I hardly use it.
I use it at work. Gets annoying at times where some things are hidden a little more than before, otherwise it is smooth and looks very nice even on an old Dell tower.

Who uses screensavers anymore? Monitors turn off now and save more power that way.
But you're right. They are looking tired. Flying Windows ftw.
I go from my Pad to my laptop and keep hitting the screen, lol
New touchscreen would be nice.
But I'm tired of buying new expensive software every time a new OS came out. Like MS Office Pro 2010(mainly now only for Word and Outlook) and Quick Books Pro 2010, MS Expressions, Photoshop CS, etc. Almost two large not $15.
I'm not comfortable with backwards compatibility issues. And the potential of any learning curve into a new OS.
I've been using it for a while on ma laptop, since it was available on MSDN. The biggest flood is lack of Start menu. Start8 from startdock was pretty handy. One irritating thing, Iron browser could be set as default browser, at least not in 100%, but maybe that's problem of browser it self. Didn't try with other browsers. I found it more irritating than helpful.
Eventually I've rollback to Windows 7, I had some software comparability issues that couldn't be workaround.

Yep I'm actually thinking of going back... you would think that when they release the newest version they should have most of the kinks ironed out, but that's just not so. I have a lot of programs force closing left & right, and repeatedly do so at completely random times. Also got a couple BSODs the other day. But I really like the new interface so is a tough decision. I use a 120 gig SSD as my boot drive, so running 2 operating systems side by side is out of the question...

1. The device has been out for around 1 month, i.e. delivered to customers. It began to reach customers at the beginning of August and it was introduced on June 25.
2. Custom recovery is almost finished according to the latest posts.
3. We have root.
So I would say that it has progressed nicely, kindly remember that Sony rolled out the C6802 on a limited amount of markets, the wide release will be with the C6833 this month and that is when the ROM development kicks off.
So you are wrong, unfortunately. Expecting a lot of ROMs for a device that has been rolled out in a limited way, i.e. excluding Europe etc and that has been out for a month, mostly as an import is a bit naive. Usually, it takes a broad release before those things kicks off.
Also notice that the Ultra is a niche device unlike the Nexus 4 which has a lot of "mainstream appeal" due to its size and price. So comparing the Ultra with the N 4 and complaining is apples and pencils.
I knew that the Ultra had a limited rollout when I bought it and that the first step would be root and that development would start in September when the C6833 reaches customers and limited action initially - so I have not even considered another device.
It is necessary to understand what it means to buy a new device that is only available in a few markets.

The LTE model (perhaps the other models too, dunno) has not had its release yet in many countries. When I got my dads htc one in my hands there was no kernels, a few roms, no mods ..nothing fun. About a month later the forum got a few kernels and roms but the developers where there so I rooted the phone it with revone in Linux mint and installed insertcoin.
And WOW, I just checked out the htc one forum ...it is filled with threads for various roms and mods now! Don't worry, It's coming sooner or later for the Z ultra
I usually wait for a while before I get a device in order for the ROMs and kernels to appear but the Ultra with its unique screen and size made it too hard - I saw now that the first recovery that works seems to be posted over at Original Android Development.

You deserved use N4.
This phone just release HSPA+ edition start from 1/August. Until now only one month. And only few selected country is out. The LTE version wise is not even get release.
Which country you stay where this phone already release 3 months?
You keep your N4 fella.
We all wish you many happy years with it.
Yes it's slow. I bought htc butterfly s and xperia z ultra at the same time. (They announced at the same countries)
...but it's ok just because we already have a news about Cyanogen ! What can be more cooler than that !!!

stfu and gtfo
you couldn't even afford it if your next choice is N4
Choosing between a 4.7" or a 6.44" device is odd, to put it mildly. To me, it isn't even a competition, the logical choice would be a Nexus 7 then.

Come trolling there is no ROM and else? You think devs have to develop for the device you own? You are the worst!! Happy you don't actually own a XZU, it make 1 useless troll far from our device.

I did not choose the N4 for its screen size or specs, i chose it because it allows me to flash custom roms and kernels. In singapore the LTE model is already released. Perhaps what you guys said is right, this thing has not yet seen a major worldwide release, ive seen the SZU in real life and its the best phone ever, im able to fit 2 S2s on it so perhaps in a few months when customs are available ill purchase one, but for now? Nah
Are you kidding?? LOL.. The official availability is September worldwide dude!

It's a snapdragon 800 device, and it's been a real pain in the ass the last couple of days to try and find a method to manually compile boot.img etc.
- We won't be able to start kernel development before I finished this (I probably have once I get a file I requested from Kali or bin4ry)
- second, setting up a device tree for a complete new board like MSM8974 which has changes from Qualcomm isn't easy!
Just have some patience and don't blame the devs, we are doing whatever we can to provide stock image with recovery etc at the moment
Dont warrant yourself because of such a fool. He'll be one of the idiots who blame you then why vou've spend the 2 mins for this post, and not for pushing your dev work forward.
They should stop whining, and do it better on their own or get the hell out of here.
Roms are not about clients, contracts and payed work, so for everybody it should be more then natural to cherish the efforts in it.
Keep up the good work, and don't feel the comments of useless retards as a judgement of your dev-work.
I just saw this today. Anybody else surprised. Google tricked us with the key lime pie lol. So it should be here in october along with the nexus 5. Anybody expecting or wanting to see some major changes? Well discusd it here

I wouldn't say they tricked us, they said in an interview they were going to go with Key Lime Pie but the deal with Kit Kat kind of happened at the last minute and they thought it would be a good idea. Just don't want anyone thinking they intentionally pushed us one way or another. Either way as someone else said I have now been craving kitkats on a daily basis.

Well the ui is probably very similair.. The look drastically changes with a new Android version (e.g. 2.x 3.x 4.x) but 4.0-4.3 look similair.. So I don't expect drastic changes.. Since they gave it a new name and not just jelly bean it will have some drastic changes I think..

If I'm not wrong Google said that the new Android version would be light enough to run on devices with 512MB RAM, which people guessed would be the case of 4.3, but in the end it wasn't, so I believe 4.4 is going to be a lighter android version, which means way faster user experience on high end devices .

They actually fixed the Mali leak already. Any other reboots are unrelated to this issue.

Yes, the reboots have drastically reduced! I have had only 2 reboots after the 4.3 upgrade (more than 30 days ago). That's completely acceptable to me.
Just wondering if the non N5 Nexus devices would be the first ones to get 4.4 (if at all they plan to roll it out that is)?
Well like always they should have a list of all model android devices that will get the update pretty soon

Someone had to say it
I normally don't upgrade (you can thank windows vista for the trauma lol) but I'm actually looking forward to this.
This and the ubuntu phone
Hope it takes care of some issues that 4.3 has

I used to have a terrible memory leak (5MB of RAM free after only a couple of hours! no exaggeration!) on 4.3 until I tracked down the programme responsible; Chrome!
I hated Chrome for Android already (screws up formatting on a lot of sites, reloads sites on tab switching EVERY TIME, no way to force desktop mode by default, no way to stop overview zoom), but discovering it was responsible for chewing up 80 to 90% of RAM with a memory leak multiple times a day really sealed it!
Switched to AOSP Browser and not had to reboot my N10 since! Currently at 92 hours uptime and 460MB free/cached RAM

Chrome is indeed the default browser (which is shocking on Google's part given how rubbish it is!)
You can find the AOSP browser in the Themes and Apps section of the Nexus 10 forum. here are two versions available, this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2330738 which is the easiest to install but you cannot force-enable desktop mode permanently (show stopper for me).
or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2154938 but the "Find in page" option in the overflow menu doesn't exist in 4.3 so there will be a weird text string (just ignore it)
In both cases you must have Root in order to install
