Has anyone been able to transfer large .mkv movies over to the Galaxy S3 external (or internal) memory using Windows? Every time I try to copy a video over it crashes my windows explorer.
Anyone had the same problem/found a solution?
Thanks
The max file size for FAT32 partitions is 4.0Gb - 1 byte. Anything above that may cause crashes and/or curruption.
If the file you`re trying to copy exceeds that limit, either use exFAT on your external SD card or split the file.

Try using other computer. Maybe the bug is in your current computer.

I am running a 4.7ghz pc with 8 gb ram and when I copy files from my phone to computer, two things happen:
1)It is dog @ss slow, takes like 3 hours (my Evo took like 10 minutes)
2)It freezes up the computer constantly (unusable), and then when it is
finished copying, the computer remains out of memory or 98% used of 8 GB!
So there definately is a bug in the Galaxy SIII copying from Windows 7.
I know they made a retarded move to not let you mount it like a USB drive,
so it takes FOREVER, and transfering files as if they were media or camera is
just so slow and stupid. I hope they come out with a fix for this, I know there
is an app from you guys in beta Easy UMS, but I have beta 2, installed busybox, etc., and my computer still can't see the drive with UMS mode.
About playing the video, I would say that the stock video player doesn't play it, but if u use qqplayer u will be able to play it.
Can u check the transfer of the same filer in another pc and report back?

The problem it's not the size of the video(i tried to move a mkv of 2gb).I'm also affected from this problem and the only way i found is to use a card reader.

This is happening to me too, whatever size the mkv file is. What i do is, rename the mkv extension to mo or any ma, then copy paste to sd card, rename it in root explorer back to mkv. Works for me
Well,i'll do it the next time thx far the tip:thumbup:

I think the issue is that you are using MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) to transfer data from pc to GS3 which is the default way in Android 4.0.
Use 'SGS3 EASY UMS' app to mount your SD card as USB mass storage.
This will resolve the problem.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
just take the .mkv file extension of the movie, tanner it over, use es file explorer to add the extension back back on.

Uninstall DIVX if you have it or turn off thumbnails in windows. Yes MTP sucks.

Got the phone on launch and enjoying it so far but 1 major problem is the external memory card file-system: FAT32.
Now the phone can handle MKV file extensions but a good majority of files are larger than 4GB and FAT32 cannot handle anything of that size. Does anyone know how this can be remedied without hacking the phone? I really dont want to mess around with the kernel as I did with HTC Desire & Samsung Galaxy S and long term suffered from no updates.
So far I have formatted the memory card via Ubuntu to ext4 but the phone will always prompt to format when I go into the card. If I ignore this I can see my files BUT again I cant for some bizarre reason transfer large files into the phone. Remember the applications to connect to the phone are New Pc Studio & Keis are Windows based so they will not recognize the external card due to the linux filesystem.
The only way I can get files into the phone is via Keis Air but transferring files via WIFI larger than 4GB always breaks.
Its madness for Samsung to be able to play MKV files but not be able to format the external memory card to a filesystem that can handle the damn filesize!
Have you tried pushing the files via adb?

sorry
but i don't think android can play videos sized more than 4gb!
i think it is because of the system
I think Kies chops the video up automatically when you use it to transfer anything over 4GB to the SD card/External SD card (Fat32). Give it a try?
Use handbrake for movies. I had a ton of 1080p movies I shrunk and file size was cut in half with no loss of quality.

I am considering to buy tablet s. One concern is that on the web I found out the article sdcard slot is only for transffering file only. Which makes me think that it is not mountable? or if it is mounted, the files on the sdcard can not be used as if they are on main storage? If that is the issue, can it be circumvented by rooting etc? Any information on this? Thanks,
Rooting would help with mounting. Stock music and video players don't see the sd card but many third party ones see and play from it ok. I have not tried installing games to sd card yet and have not read anything about it here. By the way cards above 32gb work when formatted properly acording to some posts here. Hope it helps

The stock apps the tablet comes with unfortunately do not read directly from the sd card. However, there are tons of apps in the market that will read your music, videos, photos, whatever you want from the sd card. I have tested and used MX Video Player, Quick Pic, and my emulators gameboid and n64oid

I think you are missing the point. The file transfer app copies the files from your sd card to the internal memory. The stock apps cannot directly play movies /music from sd card
Sent from my Sony Tablet S using Tapatalk
To clear some misunderstandings here:
Sony Tablet S cannot play SD contents using the menus in default application (for example: when you will tun video player you cannot browse and play anything placed on SD card).
But if you will use bundled file explorer (or any other file explorer like ghost commander) you CAN play SD contents using stock apps - and it works fine.
So the real annoyance (untill root and mount) is the fact that you cannot _browse_ to media files directly from within bundled applications.
That's all - you don't need to transfer file to internal memory to play it, it can stay on the card.
Whenever I try to copy an MKV file to my Prime, there is a loooooooong delay where nothing happens, then finally a screen pops up that says something like "this file might not play properly, are you sure you want to copy it?". When I hit "yes", it copies just fine.
Does anyone know of a way to keep this from happening? My MKV files play just fine with MX Video player, so it's a pain to have to deal with this annoying delay every single time.

Depends where that file type check is done. If it's in the USB driver, there is no way of getting rid of it other than hack the driver or use another one.
Do you use Asus software to copy the file or do you just use the prime as usb storage and copy it?
My Prime is on it's way to me, as soon as it's here I'll upgrade to ICS (rollout in Germany just began) and check on movie files.
Same on every Android device.
Got the question you get with everyone of my Android devices I have had. but I don't have that delay you mention.
Isn't even a problem, just click yes.
This message is just a heads up that it might not work properly. And how can Android or Windows know if you have installed a program that can play those files?
Think the problem is more your computer than Prime. when it comes to send files its most time the computer that is the problem.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Problem is that the Prime connects as an MTP device. This in conjunction with the MTP/USB driver used could be the problem. Run "devmgmt.msc" from Win+R to get to the device manager and check if "Asus MTP device" is properly installed, if not, update the driver (if possible).
Question pops up instantaneously for me.
I think this is DRM related issue. It seems like the prime has no option (or purposely removed) to be mounted as Mass USB Storage. The only option available is to mount it as MTP or as a Camera.
I can copy small files in and out fine with MTP. However, I think it checks for file types and warn/deny certain ones that the prime should not be able to play, even though you have an app installed you know can play it. It's really annoying specially when copying multiple files and you come back to your computer to find out it stopped copying because of a stupid warning or question.
Whenever I copy large or small .mkv files, explorer.exe just tanks and quits. I think ICS or some DRM app is doing this on purpose for movie files. .avi files seems fine but gives a warning. But when all else fails, I can pull out the external sdcard and copy the files through a reader.
Is there a way to force it to mount as as a USB Mass Storage device like my other android device? Or was this option removed now from ICS as Google gets stricter with DRM related issues? I wonder if the Nexus can be mounted as a USB Mass Storage rather than MTP?
Any ideas guys?
PS. It's kind of silly that they brag you play HD movies and the screen can show them in HD, but you can't copy any HD formatted files either because of DRM restrictions or the sdcard format can only handle movies with 4gb or less (which is not HD quality anymore). The only thing its good for is to shoot your own HD videos with the camera and play that video in HD, which you can do with your phone better since it's smaller and easier to maneuver.
And they say the new T700 is coming out with 1080p, I say its useless unless they can mount the drives with ntfs or ext4 with faster read/write throughput to prevent lags.
I can't explain the delay before getting the prompt, but here's an explanation straight from a Google engineer for why the Prime doesn't have USB Mass Storage enabled.

Pfft, at least you can copy MKV files to your Prime directly . I had to transfer 13GB of files to a USB, transfer them to my netbook and then from the Netbook to my MicroSD card in an SD card adapter all because my MicroSD to USB adapter broke and I can't transfer directly to the Prime

That still doesn't explain why some files would transfer fine while others do not. Have you tried transferring a .mkv file (let say 2gb) and see if it works? It crashes for me. As for other file types, I get ask stupid questions.

It wasn't meant to explain that. It was only meant to explain why there is no USB Mass Storage.
I highly doubt it's a DRM problem because I'm able to copy .mkv files over. The only thing I have to do is confirm that I want to copy it, because it will complain that it might not be able to play that file type.
FYI
Android is smth like linux (FAT drive) you are UNALBE to TRANSFER ANY SINGLE FILE MORE THAN 2GB thru usb.
micro sd card is limit to 4 GB if i'm not wrong.
the BEST solution is network transfer with ES file explorer, itz good to invest on NAS aka network drive now, SCREW USB.
set yourself free, no more limitation and driver ****...
aragorn182,
So you can copy .mkv files fine. Hmm I guess I'll try reformatting my micro sdcard coz its acting flaky and try again. Thanks, at least I have some confirmation it works for others. Funny thing is, I can copy into it if I pull it out and put it into my card reader.
With regards to NAS. I already have NAS at home and the WD Live (3 of them) so I can watch movies in each room. Problem is, I want to watch movies on my tablet when I'm traveling long flights (starting to tire of carrying my laptop, tablet is so much lighter). At home, Its kind of useless to watch movies on my tablet when my TV is bigger and I have media players to play them. Lol, even my computer monitor is bigger
u can use network transfer to ur prime...not asking u to stream...
you wont have any problem with file size or type when using network transfer to your prime. since u have NAS make for use of it.
I've copied a few gigs of MKVs to my Prime (both internal storage and microsd) and had no problems. Windows 7 does tells me the little error message about how the thing might not play the format back properly (I wonder why that error shows up considering the Prime can at least playback H.264 with AAC audio in MKV using the native video player).
Did you disable Asys Sync on your tablet? I noticed once I disabled that, transfer speeds were a lot faster.
Ok finally worked. I reformatted the micro sdcard in FAT32 and ran read/write test on it to make sure it is not bad. Tried it again twice and it worked both times. Thanks guys. Really weird problem, something must have gotten corrupted. I have also tried wireless transfer and it work flawlessly. I think that will be my preferred method of transfer now.
Thank you everyone.
Hi everyone,
I just up rom to 4.1 Poland and got the iusse with media files from ext sdcard. When open galery I can not see video and picture files on ext sdcard but I can see them when open My files application. I have to move these file to internal sdcard then I can view them from galary app. Another thing is video clip file does not show playing when view in thumbnail mode like ICS 4.0.4 before. I have same problem with stock mp3 player, it can't play mp3 from my external sdcard.
Rescan your files by starting media scanner again.

It didn't help for me, in fact on the same album some tracks are recognized as mp3 and some not... perhaps file corruption I'll dig in.

Same issue
Seems I'm having the exact same issue on XXDLJ4.
But for me it doesn't even matter where i put them, I've got a folder with ~520 songs and stock player only shows ~300.
I tried alot of things:
- Placing media on internal/external storage.
- Clearing Media Storage cache
- Reuploading the entire folder from my pc
- RescanMedia root (disabled mediascanner)
- Dividing the music into smaller bits/folders
- Wiping and reflashing multiple times
- Cm10 nigtly has the same issue for me
So far nothing has worked.. The only workaround so far is using 3rd party apps..
Wipe EXT SD card format via phone .
Make folders copy one file to folder if it is now seen copy the rest .

Just tried it out (forgot to mention I already tried reformatting).
But still no consistent pickup from the mediascanner.
Tried the copy-back with a folder with 33 mp3's first, only 4 showed (Both on Sammy and CM10).
Then tried it with a folder with 41 pictures, only 12 showed on Sammy and ~20 on CM10.
Any more suggestions?

Sorry, didnt have time to read the whole thread, have you tried creating a folder on the route of the SD card called "MUSIC", that usally works.
Also check there isnt a file called "nomedia" in the route of the SD too.
plus - after you reformat just put the MUSIC on first before you copy everything else back, let it scan and then copy your other Folders back, this can also help.
any updates from the OP?
Yeah I did both.
Reformatting didn't solve anything. Same songs showed as before after recopy.
But while playing around with another rom (CM) i discovered something..
Seems that half my music is faulty mp3 files. Searched about the issue with Tubemate, and seems as it's common issue with some players. (Change in Sammy music app in JB maybe?)
It doenst convert to mp3 but saves the audio part to mp3. Must have been a bug in an older Tubemate version. Cause when i redownload the faulty song with the latest version it immediatly shows in the Sammy Music app.
When i try playing them on CM the faulty mp3's just stay at 0:00. So i went and tried a few mp3 checkers, afraid they report the same nr of correct/uncorrect as my Sammy music app shows.

Must be the faulty mp3 story.

I've transferred some video files to the SD card on the Z Ultra (using Sony Bridge for Mac) but the Z Ultra's Movie app does not recognize these files at all. I've tried to clear the data of Media Storage (in Apps -> All) and restart the phone to force a rescan of the media files but that doesn't seem to be able to resolve the problem. Also, strangely the phone DOES recognize video files stored in the Internal Phone Storage. It also DOES recognize music files stored on my SD card - so the only problem is with video files. Appreciate if you have a fix to this problem!

Thanks for your reply. I figured out a fix already. Just create a new folder called "Video 2" or something. Then, use the phone's File Commander app, move all those videos in the existing folder to the new "Video 2" folder. Then those videos will load in the Movies app.
