[Q] Transfer Phonebook Via Bluetooth - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I'm trying to transfer my phonebook via Bluetooth to the Clarion 501 unit in my car. I've tried a number of things but I can't seem to get the contacts to transfer over. I think the problem may be because all my contacts are Gmail contacts - they don't actually exist in the phone's memory. Does anyone know how I can copy my contacts from Gmail into the phone's internal storage?
Thanks.

Bluetooth woes
I am having the same issue syncing to my infiniti bluetooth. I don't think it is because the contacts are all stored in your gmail account. I had no problem with my Evo syncing the gmail contacts everytime, but this so called greatest phone won't even do that.
I think it may be an ICS issue. I am starting to hate my phone.
Let me know if it works for you and how you do it.

Could be an issue with ICS. I was having the same problem with my rooted HTC HD2 (rooted with ICS).

Sync Oddness

Ok, got the Hero (after a diamond and trinity) works nice BUT what is with the HTC Sync Thing?
Everytime it connects it udates random conacts from Outlook, so that at the moment the wife has 4 entries and some other numbers are the same yet others are fine.
ANyone else any experience and more importantly how to heck do I stop it?!

What? Really? HTC Sync lets you synchronize Outlook or Windows Address Book contacts on your PC with your Hero.

Just don't use it! there is nothing to say you have to use 'HTC Sync'.
I never use it as I don't want the contacts in Outlook to sync to my Hero. I just use my google contacts for this.
No there is nothing saying I HAVE to use HTC Sync however if I want to put all my contacts across in one easy go then the options seem a little limited.
Fixed it now just told it not to auto sync and that seems to have got control back to me
Glad to hear you got it sorted...
I know there are limited options when 'sync-ing' contacts to your Hero.
I used 'ExportContacts' app in the market to export all my 'old' SIM contacts into a csv file. I then exported my contacts from outlook also to a csv file which can then be imported into your Google account.
All to do then was to 'merge' all of the contacts in my Google account. This then syncs with the phone and I never bothered to use HTC Sync.
Makes sense, I dont use the google address book as I tend to keep the data useage to a minimum mainly as when at work we dont even have a phone signal, so prefer to carry everything "locally" properly, hence the much abused and hated outlook ;0

Unexpected shutdowns + Contacts sync problem + other bugs!?

Hi guys,
I'm a newbie on the Android and Samsung world (previously HTC and windows) and I have my SGSII for 2 months now, and it's a great phone but I'm having some annoying problems in some simple things on the daily use.
-Sometimes the phone reboots itself with no apparent problem.
-Have my exchange account working for email, but for the calendar events sometimes it doesn't sync.
-Can't sync my exchange contacts/calendar to google account after joining them in the contacts. In google contacts it doesn't show any contacts and I've tried everything!
-Facebook don't update contacts pictures on the phone automatically , we have to choose the picture one by one in each contact even after they've been merged!!!
-When in hands free or with Bluetooth handset can't switch back to mic sometimes when we need to.
I'm running stock KE2 and can't update to later versions, since my KIES don't show me the updates!
Any suggestions or fixes on how to resolve these problems?
Thanks guys

[Q] Facebook contact sync error (screenshot attached)

Note: It's working again! Looks like a server issue from Samsung which they might have fixed. See post #6.
I replaced my old phone for dead pixel. On the new phone, I restored contacts, and synced with Facebook (Social Hub), but I get the following error and FB contacts are not getting loaded -
"Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."
I tried the following but didn't help -
1. Reset phone, sync with FB contacts before anything else - didn't help
2. Remove Samsung Mobile app from Facebook (from the browser in App management) - and remove mobile account at the same time. Reconnect mobile account. Didn't help.
The Facebook App's sync works though, and syncs with the contacts! Unfortunately the way it syncs is not compatible with third party apps like Viber or WhatsApp who try to read the phone numbers from contacts list.
I know this has been posted sometimes before, but that was 1 year ago with Froyo. Is there a solution to this?

Facebook Samsung Social Hub sync error
I also have the same problem with my Galaxy s2. My problem started with a session expired error. Now i get "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly"View attachment 748549
I have the same problem after flashing KI8 firmware. It was working fine with 2.3.3 and 2.3.4. But I can sync messages.
Looks like it is a current problem that the servers are facing. I will report back when it works (if ) for me!
Same thing happening for me on my T-mobile GS2. Social Hub FB Calendar syncs OK but not Contacts nor Messages.
My regular FB account sync (that comes with the regular FB Android app) is syncing contacts just fine however.. So I can see my FB contacts from the Contacts/Phone app, but the Activies, History, and Media tabs (which I assume are fed via the Social Hub FB syncs) are empty.
The Social Hub service is back online on my SGSII. Everything is green. Samsung must have fixed their server issue.
Thanks, checked, it's working!

Thank you! I looked at your post and checked, it's working for me as well. It means now Viber and WhatsApp can analyze my address book again
I will post a comment in the original message.

[Q] Local phone android contacts with ICS?

Hi everyone,
I'm using CM9, but I tried different ICS roms and I encounter this problem with all of them.
- I'm trying to add a local phone (non gmail) contact to my phone, but it doesn't let me do that. When I add a new contact, a message box pops up saying, that: "Your new contact will be synchronized with <my gmail account>". How to add a local phone (not a SIM card) number?
- I have a backup of all my local phone numbers from GB made with MyPhoneExplorer, and restoring it works when I'm on ICS. The contacts are shown as local phone contacts (PCSC). However, after restarting the phone and waiting a few minutes, all the local contacts are completely gone. MyPhoneExplorer confirms that there are no contacts in the phone either. What's going on?
I really do not want to sync my contacts with google. Looking forward to hearing some answers!
Cheers!
I use CM9-alpha4 (i9001) and it works for me.
I did completely turn of "accounts and sync" and I also didn't flash gapps.
When I first created a new contact I was notified that it will be local and not synced. No problem there.
I'm using the CM9 9-20120614 version (the newest beta). I have Accounts and Sync on, since I want some stuff synced with my phone (facebook, linkedin, gmail calendar, etc.). And I experience the beforementioned problems...
I fiddled with the options but found nothing that would allow me to store my contacts locally and prevent the existing ones from being deleted
There is an issue in the Bugtracker:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=26834
You could also use some other account that doesn't sync with Google. Funambol[0] would be my choice.
[0] http://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=com.funambol.androidsync
Thanks for that link.
However, I'm not sure, how is that cloud solution about to help storing my contacts locally without sharing it with any 3rd party?
You have to assiciate your contacts with some account. The funambol client creates such a "account provider" for you. But I just tried it and it seems like the client always wants you to sync with some server. You could set up your own server but that might not be what you want.
Sorry I can't really help. There is another thread about this:

Alright, thanks a lot for your replies! Sigh, I guess I will just stick with google contacts for now -_-
here's my fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808037

Thanks! I will test it soon, although I have already moved my contacts to Google's cloud. Also, will this fix prevent me from synching google contacts? If so, it's more of a workaround than fix.
It breaks contact syncing deliberately. If you want to keep that while enabling local storage of contacts you need to edit the contacts.apk . I initially decompiled it and identified the line of code that enables or disables the local option.

Car bluetooth contacts (no phonebook)

My 2011 Infiniti G37x had NO problems with my I777 phone using bluetooth on either the factory GB or ICS.
I just rooted my phone and now using Siyah 3.5.1 Kernel and Serendipity 9.4 ROM. Love this rom.
My bluetooth works fine in the car, but the contacts are not moving over. I tried deleting the phone from the car and re-adding it. After pairing the phone to the car, it asks permission for the contacts, which I check "don't ask me again" and "allow". Nothing happens. I check the car and no phonebook entries exist.
I can still use bluetooth to make and receive calls, but no address book exists. Any idea? Is this the kernel or rom issue???
I wonder if it has something to do with the custom ROM's phone.apk, or whatever it would be, not being recognized. Is there a way you can grab the stock phone and try having that as well?
Just thinking out loud until the experts show up.

I have no idea. I only found a few threads about this and some stated that it was ICS specific, even on factory non rooted phones.
I didn't have the problem though before I rooted my phone on ICS 4.0.3.
I may try to go and upgrade to JB this weekend to see if that fixes the problem.
Since I'm still a noob at all this I'm a little hesitant to keep flashing kernels and roms. Last night I tried going back to the ROMs factory Cherrypicker kernel and that messed up my phone even more. Don't know why it did that. It didn't work on the Cherrypicker kernel either.
Just wanted to ask if you are using the native Contacts database? I'm running SHOstock2 v4.1.1 with Syhah 3.5.1. I use a third party contacts/calendar app (DejaOffice) to sync with Outlook. Sometime is the third party contacts DB does not update the native contacts DB my Ford Sync won't display addresses.
Sorry I should have specified that info:
Running only GMail app for email using the native contacts (people icon) on the phone. Gmail is syncing my contacts.
Outlook is NOT installed on my phone.
I was using the exact same gmail and contacts before and my phone did work on ATT non-rooted stock GB and ICS 4.0.3.
Well I decided to go ahead and install JellyBean AOKB 8.28.2012 and Contacts are now coming over to my car via bluetooth.
Hurray!!!
