Hi guys,
Got an update that I had an OTA update waiting. This is strange as I'm on I9300XXLH1 which I think is the latest right? Also my phone is rooted so I thought I wouldn't get OTA updates? Was originally a Vodafone branded phone, i applied ROM through Odin.
So i hit update and it downloads (17.61MB), screen comes up with the usual update message and says:
Update details (17.61MB)
Improved stability
and gives me Later and Install options..
Hit install and phone reboots and then seems to go to CWM screen:
"CMM-based recovery v5.5......"
With some options like reboot system now, install Zip, wipe etc...
Down the bottom it has some text about finding and opening package then says it "failed to verify whole-file signature
installation aborted.
I choose reboot and phone boots fine but then I get a blank update box. I hit close and it goes away.
next time i check for updates there it is again.
Any ideas on this?
I believe it is a modem update.

You can't apply it because your rooted. Either update through Kies or download the firmware from sammobile and flash through Odin.
You can also flash the stock recovery back. That'll let the ota go through.

As mentioned if your device is rooted the update will fail. If you are keen to uply that tiny update flash stock rom n check through kies if that update is available. I changed the csc on my device a from AFR to BTU. It wiped everything as I knew that and my device back to stock as well as got the new lh1 modem update. Currently on stock rom will wait until the official release.

I had the same problem, just update it via Kies
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Root is not the cause for the failure, not having a stock recovery is.
Also if you use KIES beware that there is a good chance it will wipe your internal SD
Thats not true, neither of the statements you made were true... CWM supports OTA now. And Kies doesn't format your internal card...

Kies has formatted my internel sd every time I have ever used it on the s1, 2 and 3.... so..... what am I doing wrong?
and also it depends what CWM he has installed, if he has Chainfires (from cf-root) then OTA's will fail maybe if he is on Koushes latest build (which he clearly isn't) then it would have worked.
Edit: Chainfire has just informed me that the reason most OTA's fail in CWM is that it has signature verification set to ON (like stock recovery) and as the recovery image signature will not match if you are on a custom recovery the flash then fails.

Hi,
I want to unroot my SGS3 just to compare with stock ROM. I tried this :
http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-unroot/how-to-unroot-galaxy-s3-i9300/#comment-4415
But during the flash of cache.img everything stops and the phone is rebooting.
But like I said in the commentaries when my phone is rebooting I've a black screen. Then I tried to flash it directly with Heimdall but I've got this error
ERROR: Partition corresponding to -modem argument could not be located
Ending session...
Rebooting device...
Re-attaching kernel driver...

And when I remove the modem.bin my phone stays with the "Samsung" and never get to the PIN code.
Do you have any idea how could I unroot my phone ?
Thanks.
PS : I'm using Ubuntu, I can't use Odin.
Use mobile Odin. This can unroot I believe.

Yes i read all your posts you have UBUNTU so what you need to do is buy ODIN mobile from play store download a stock rom depending on your country from sammobile.com. Extract the zip file get the tar file and put it into your sd and use mobile odin to flash back to stock.

Update your ROM, via ROM Manager (If available) and scanning through the forums, every now and again..
I use AnTuTu CPU Master free - Simple, good looking and does the job - Also I'd recommend the SiyahKernel, bei GokHanmoral (See his website: here
Download the latest kernel for your ROM, based on if it's Stock, AOSP or AOKP..

Stock means samsung firmware and AOSP/AOKP are firmwares build from the "android source code" released by google without samsung modification/framework. "real android". use aosp rom if you don't like touchwiz or miss nexus functions

The kernel is the "boss" of the OS, which contains all the drivers and commands.
Imagine an OS (Operating System) as a company,
you have following in the OS (company):
the kernel - Boss
the shell - the office/s
the utilities - the outpost/s
The kernel is, like I said, the boss and tells which part of thecompany has to do what, at which point in time.
The shell is the office and calls everyine, making sure everything is going to plan, and delivering commands, from the kernel (boss), to the utilities and externel sources.
The utilities are your main working area, where you can interact actively with the OS and make changes to it, including changes to the UI, settings and apps (programs).
And that's how an operating system works, I hope I broke it down enough, for everyone to understand
Hope I could help!

Well, the main difference is, that they are practicly ll the same.
What most people understand as "stock" firmware, is AOSP code, released by Google, and then modified by the different manufacturers, to give their devices that typical (i.e.) Samsung look.
AOSP is the stock (unmodified and pure) Android code, that is periodicly released by Google, to maintain Android and the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
AOKP means Android Open Kang(ed) Project, kanged code is code, taken from source, and modified, to then be made open source again.
If you take what I write/say seriously (Which you should), then "stock" which, by the way, is branded software, is only a kang, of the AOSP code, so each and every one of you, who has left their device stock, with what they got delivered with, is using a kanged Android ROM.
Hope I could help!

Your kernel version is listed in Settings -> About Device
You can download Odin from Sammobile.com/firmware, or buy Mobile Odin from the Play Store.
Mobile Odin has the abilty to auto-detect what sort of tar you want to flash, so you don't have to be an expert in those things to flash a simple kernel

Beware with overclocking, that's actually the only way a software can fry your hardware if something goes wrong.
In this case, the warranty will definitly not work.
Either you have modified your device and won't get OTA, you need to go through odin. I think only rooting allows you to get them through kies though.
OR
you have to (triangle away and) go back to a stock rom and you will have update through OTA

Wrong - Any modification to the device will "tur off" the ability to Update OTA..
You can update via CWM, TWRP, Odin, Mobile Odin, ADB and so.. And waranty will work in some cases, if you have bought your phone in a shop - it won't work, if you have a contract, just send it in and request a new one..

OK let's clarify something, someone here is giving bad advice.
1.) Don't use ROM manager to flash ROMs or anything else, it can cause issues.
Use it to download them but flash them via your recovery (cwm, twrp etc.) Or with mobile Odin.
2.) If you root your device then it will show as system modified and stop you getting OTAs, we don't care about OTAs on xda, we get it here to flash before 99% of people get OTAs.
3.) TL;DR about kernels: they give you control over your hardware, they allow you to overclock your CPU and GPU, undervolt them too. Also with the S3 we can alter the equaliser settings in our audio chip (Wolfson, great hardware)
Don't worry about the rest, research that in your own time, but DO research it.
4.) Triangle away is an app by chain fire that removes the binary flash count in the bootloader. To simplify, Samsung inserted a mechanism besides the system modified one, that registers if we change anything in our system so if we send it back they can know if we tampered with the system.
Triangle away sets it back to zero.

Come on dude, even if you HAVE modified your device, some ROMs still have FOTA enabled, like with Update Me, ROM Manager and kitchen apps, so what you were saying was wrong - I was not insulting anyone, nor am I "Mind limited". Retarded is the word, btw.
You can use Mobile Odin, to go back to stock, but you don't need to, I'm pretty sure, that as long as the counter states the device is running stock firmware, you can still receive FOTAs.. I'm not too sure, though..
P.S. The OP didn't say he's running stock (rooted/modified) firmware, did he?
Btw, wat is OP?? And is it gd for me to flash cm10 or should i just wait for JB 4.2?? if yes, when and where can I find the jb 4.2 file or package (idk wat its called)And wats the difference between using mobile odin and the original odin that i used before to flash jb 4.1.1??

OP is original post, as in first post in a thread.
As for cm10 well you can always flash it if you want to and when/if 4.2 official drops then you can just flash that, you are never stuck on one or the other.
You can download firmwares from samfirmware.com.
You need a PC/laptop to use Odin, mobile Odin is an app on your phone with the same functionality as Odin.
Its really convenient.

Custom ROM != stock ROM when it comes to OTAs, stop trying to cover your tracks by twisting what was said.
On stock and rooted = no OTAs.
Custom ROMs with OTAs means you can get updates of that custom ROM only and they aren't even real OTAs, it just downloads the full firmware as opposed to the deltas.
The jury is still out on whether or not you are "mind limited" or "retarded" as you said yourself.

Then the phone reboots and I get a message saying that the firmware update has failed.. I've got stock firmware and have never tampered with it using custom firmware or any of that rubbish.. Can anyone help please

A guess you are rooted so OTA as per the faqs and guides has failed .
Use Kies or flash a rom via Odin .
A guess as the OP is lacking information .
But whatever you are posting in the wrong forum if you have an I9305 .
No i am not rooted. As i stated in my op, I am on stock firmware and have never tampered with it... And I do mean NEVER as in not rooted or any other of the goobldegook things that gets spoke in here... Now can anyone tell me how to sort this bug out?

The question about the firmware was not the version I could read that it was what country or carrier specific type UK, (BTU), O2, Vodafone or whatever.
You really need to calm down otherwise you wont get help people will ignore you and the mods will be the one that close your threads and ban you, are you this aggressive towards people you work with.
The less detail you give the less we can get help, so we ask the questions to try and find out exactly what you are wanting to do, just updating 4.1.2 to 4.3 isn't enough on an international forum.
Sorry was seriously stressed at the time. And i took some of these replies to be seriously condescending.
I'm in the uk and using an unbranded s3..I've factory reset the thing and it still has the same error. I also booted it holding the up, home and off button. Then cleared thr cache. Still thr problem remains.

Hi
This has just happened to me today as well. My phone kept getting the you need to wait your turn message and then it finally downloaded today but upon install it got to 27 percent and rebooted back up.
It how says it is the latest version.
I'm also in the UK on Three however my phone is rooted but I did run triangle away to reset the counter and disable supersu first.
It is running stock firmware - JZO54K.I9300XXEMG4
I guess ill install using Kies later. I hope it can install with losing anything? Ill read up later - just driven back from Scotland back to Midlands so a little tired atm

Hi Yellow Yogult
You can get OTA when rooted you just need to ensure your counter is reset and also the status is set back as normal using triangleaway as it describes.
I believe the other guy said earlier that it was his wifes s3 but he has an s4 (or was it the other way round?).
I'm just going to follow the advise to use Kies instead though after a little reading up.

What I'm using to message in here with is an irrelevance. I'm using my own s4..it is my wifes s3 that is having the problems... I've already explained this once. Am I going to have to keep doing so?

Yikes, you do realise people are less likely to put themselves out to help if you type your messages with an attitude each time?

Just as an update....
Following the advise given previously, I have used Kies instead of the OTA and the update has worked perfectly with no issues.
Thanks

Well. If u are rooted, u can nvr be Official in device status as the phone checks if u are rooted every time u restart. So even if u use triangle away, when u reboot. U are still rooted. So the device status will STILL be MODIFIED. I did it

Not quite true. triangle away has the ability for this reason to reboot and fix the status from modified into normal.
I've just looked up a guide to basically how I did it.

** ok it seems I cannot post links to other sites yet... **

Yeah, as I said previously it worked fine. Downloaded the 4.3 update through OTA however upon install stopped at 27 percent and just rebooted back.
I guess it would just be more sensible just use Kies anyway as it was very easy.
Ill sort out that thanks
