[Q] Can't boot into flash mode - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been using CM7.2 with fxp 119 for some time and today tried an upgrade to fxp125.
Used flashtool to create a bundle with the kernel.sin that came in the zip file.
Flashed to x10.
Booted into cwm and selected install cm7.2 zip from sd card. All ok so far.
But when it rebooted it got stuck at the fxp boot screen, left it for about 30 mins and still nothing. So I pulled the battery and tried to boot it again, still nothing (stuck at fxp boot screen).
I tried wiping everything and re-installing cm7.2 but then it came up with an error (script aborted: assert failed: getprop) which I think means I deleted too much.
My next thought was to re-flash the kernel but now the phone won't boot into flash mode, holding the back button does nothing and it carries on into full phone mode then gets stuck at boot screen.
I tried varying combinations of buttons and try to do it quickly in flash mode before it jumps back to normal mode (which has worked long enough to flash a new kernel via flashtool) but it won't stay in flash mode long enough to get PC companion to repair it.
Any ideas on how to get it back up and running again on any rom?

from what i can understand is you CAN flash but its failing on pccompanion ?
so do you think you'll be able to flash a full rom trough flashtool ?
like this one for example
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698204
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FT 0.8 is mandatory to flash this bundle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah for some reason after a lot of attempts it did a couple of times. I had to preload Flashtool then held the back button whilst putting in the battery and plugging the USB at the same time. However it doesn't seem to do even do that any more.
If I plug it into a mains charger it tries to boot but stops at the bootscreen. If I try to plug it into the laptop on normal mode it tries does the same, if I plug it in whilst holding the back button it just tries to boot as normal then freezes at the bootscreen.
It just won't boot into flash mode at all any more.

ive helped someone before with about the same problem .
and at the end it turned out to be something silly .
so to make sure could you do the following steps.
1-Flashtool (select what to flash) then it will ask you to unplug, turn off phone etc.
2-unplug
3-take out battery
4-Replug
5-Hold back button and keep holding it
6-insert battery as your holding back button.
try flashing something you know that works / worked before . or the full rom linked i gave you.
the reason i ask you to do this is, if you cant flash or enter recovery what left right ?

Yep, am doing as you describe with a rom I know has worked before, but no matter how long I hold the back button it still starts to try to fully boot.
I've got the newest Flashtool but can't get that full ftf you linked, that file site doesn't seem to work for me, hasn't for months, just says it start downloading but never does.
The message from Flashtool (sounds serious):-

ok next step is to try SEUS
instead of pc companinon.
http://sony-ericsson-update-service.en.uptodown.com/
get back to stock if possible and try again.

easy pesy
just revert back to stock 2.3.3 rom
open seus->support->update phone->in red color repair phone would be written in the window PRESS IT->wait then select your phone from the list....->it says take battery out for 5 secs->press back button and keep pressing it then connect the usb cable.....->voila it starts downloading stock rom from internet and then would update....
took 25mins with me
p.s till the process of selecting your phone you dont need to connectit just swtich off your phone.....

when I google it it seems to always point me in the direction of bootloader problems .

If you didn't already have your bootloader unlocked and tools in place to reload the Android operating system (ie, ROMs or disk images), I strongly suspected you are completely screwed.
You can install an OS from scratch on your phone, but you need a specialized environment and tools to do so and those are often proprietary and/or secret. It is far easier to load a disk image (ROM) than do a base install. Either way, part of the process is an unlocked bootloader so that you can boot into an environment/tool instead of the existing OS. If you don't have a way to boot into something besides the installed system and have pooched that system - generally the only way you as a consumer have available to hack the bootloader - then you're up the creek. – Logos Apr 6 at 12:34

Cheers for the comments about SEUS. However, before I had a chance to read them I had already read on another forum about someone using Wotan to repair a different model of Xperia that was in a similar state to mine. So I paid the fee and the thing worked.
It makes think it was something more to do with my laptop environment than the phone. Because the Wotan client came with it's own driver, which my device loaded and used when I connected it holding the back button, this seemed to make the phone stay in flash mode when connected.
From this experience I don't think holding the back button puts an X10 into flash mode, it merely asks the host 'can I be in flash mode?' and either the host says yes or no.

Awsome to hear you getting it up and running
Mind me asking if you installed flashtool drivers?

Cannot put Neo into flash mode (USB + Back) - is there any way to update my OS?

Cannot go into fastboot mode either (USB + Menu button) but at least Flashtool is able to reboot it into fastboot...
...is there any similar trick to reboot into flashmode? Flashtool only tells me to do the manual stuff for flashmode.
Or, alternatively, is there any way to perform a ROM update - I'm fine with the latest SE stock ROM, I just need that fixed auto-leveling audio feature I had in my Arc since last Summer -, maybe through some fastboot injection + multiple other steps?
It's running GB 2.3.2 aka 3.0.A.2.181 and I need 2.3.4 aka 4.0.A.2.0.XX; I have root but that's it, when I tried installing CWM it did install but does not work, phone freezes at bootup when I keep pushing Volume Down at the first logo to invoke CWM.
PC Companion also 2.0 craps out when I try to run the update, telling me to take it to a SEMC place...
Thanks in advance
Having the same problem.. cant go into flashmode USB + back
What do you mean by you cant go? what happens when you try to go into that mode?
If you get blue LED on that means you are in that mode.

I meant what I said: it does NOT go into flash mode. You can try 100x it will only turn on charging, that's all.
And yes, having owned X10 and Arc previously I've done this before multiple times so I know how it goes normally... not on this Neo though, that's for sure.
So the question is: is there any way to perform an update via fastboot...?

And flash mode is a green light...
Are you still holding the key and capering the flash?

For the love of God, Asians: PLEASE STOP ****IN' PLUGGING THIS **** IN EVERY OTHER POST.
Is it locked to a specific network? My understanding is that it'll have fastboot locked and you won't be able to get into flash mode. Mine's a Neo V, though, so the Neo may be different.
If it's the same as the Neo V then you have to unlock fastboot as well as the bootloader.
If you go to the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to get into the service menu, I think one of the options tells you about simlocks. Sorry I can't be clearer, my phone won't go to that menu, presumably because I've got CM7 on there now.
Apologies if the Neo doesn't work the same way.

I've just found a similar post, which seems to have ended with the same conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305966
To unlock fastboot, I paid someone else to do it with their credits for setool.
Of course, having a locked fastboot shouldn't stop you from upgrading but I'd guess it'd have to be to a specific version that your supplier has modified.
Maybe it sees the CWM install and views it as non-standard. It might be worth flashing a stock recovery and trying again.
I realise that Flashtool was able to put the phone into fastboot mode. I imagine this "locked fastboot" terminology doesn't quite cover what it really means.
You can use flash mode, back button, greenlight with a locked phone ( sim and bootloader). Fastboot menu key, blue light needs unlocked phone ( sim)

[Q] Unable to boot in recovery mode - sony ericsson X10 mini

Hello everyone, I am using sony ericsson x10 mini mobile phone. I want to install custom ROM cyanogen 7 gingerbread. But I am facing problem while booting this in recovery mode. I have tried the following.
downloaded custom rom for xperia mini and copied in to sdcard
installed ROM Manager Premium (not purchased, downloaded from google search and it is working fine)
installed root explorer
S1 tool
Rooted from superoneclick
downloaded xRecovery and copied into system folder
Flash tool - showing bootloader unlocked, and dont know how to flash phone.
msm7227 - used for unlock boot loader
I have rooted my phone successfully, all above things did successfully, when i am trying to boot my phone into recovery mode then it is not boot in that mode instead it boots in normal mode. What I am doing when phone starts and sonyericcson appears then i continuously pushing button many times but it boots in normal mode. So what I have to do to boot my phone in recovery mode. I have read and tried many guides in your forum but nothing works. Please help me.
Use FlashTool to flash a custom kernel (many cKernels haves recovery included, like nAa kernel). Follow these steps:
Download the ftf file of the kernel.
Drag it into the Flashtool window.
Another window will appear, then power off your phone and connect it to USB with the Back button pressed.
The flashing process takes less than 5 seconds, disconnect your phone when Flashtool says "Flashing Finished".
All right, now you can enter to recovery
Note: If you don't want a custom kernel, you lost your time unlocking the bootloader
I have tried to flash my x10 mini, like I have downloaded the flash file .ftf and with help of FlashTool_0.2.5 done flash my phone. Now flashing displayed some error and after 10 - 15 seconds I disconnected my phone but now phone is turning on. So I want to know what should i do and can I able to turn on my phone again. Please help me .
EDIT
Phone is stuck in boot loop at just before sony ericcson LOGO appears
when i attach it to pc to flash it displays

Hmm... I think you're not connecting your phone correctly, FlashTool should say "Device connected in flash mode" when you connect it correctly.
Are you sure that you're following the steps that I mentioned before?
Hi, you were right, i was not connecting my phone correctly in flash because battery connector was not connected properly. That's why my phone was booting. Now I have restored my phone in stock ROM which is downloaded from website. But the problem is I am unable to install custom ROM on my phone. On my phone android 2.1 has installed when I am flashing with new kernel ( E10_nAa-11_2.6.29.6-nAa-11 ) then it stuck into boot loop at sony ericsson animated logo. That's why I have to again flash it with stock ROM to make its working. I think this kernel is not compatible with android 2.1. I want to know is there any other way to install custom ROM on this phone means with the help of Flash Tool like installing stock ROM. If yes, them please provide me cyanogen 7 firmware stable version. Thank you...
Yes, you're right, custom kernels are not compatible with Sony stock ROM.
I recommend you MiniCM ROM, to install it follow the next steps:
Download nAa kernel, MiniCM zip file and GApps zip file. Copy the zip files into your SD.
Flash nAa kernel.
Enter to the recovery (pressing several times Back button when nAa kernel logo appear).
Go to full wipe/factory reset option. Wait for the process to finish.
Now, got to install zip from SD card option. Seek for the MiniCM zip file that you copied before.
Wait for the process to finish. Go to the same option, selecting now the GApps zip. Wait again. The recovery options will appear once again, go to Reboot now option and wait (the first boot will take a while)
You will lose all your app data when you make a full wipe, so you should consider to make a backup (Titanuim backup i.e.) if you don't want to lose all that.
I you still having troubles, send me a PM

When I attempt to flash the phone i drop the ftf file in, it prepares the files, a window prompts me to to unplug the phone, power it off then connect it into fastboot, which as you can see happens below. But the window that prompts me to do all this just stays there and I get no further with he process, I must be doing something wrong or have something set up wrong. Any ideas

XTZ SGP311 softbrick/bootlooped, how to factory reset?

OK, I have a XTZ WiFi only (SGP311) which ran on stock with the latest official OTA (4.2.2 I think it was?)
Basically, the thing is completely unmodified with the exception of using permanent root through vroom utility. No custom recovery, nothing. (I am not sure if rooting via vroom also unloks the bootloader) Now yesterday, I restored some apps/data through Titaniumbackup and when rebooting the device after that things went sideways.
When turning on I just get up to the colormorphing ribbon animation which halts after a few seconds and then cycles the tablet into another reboot. I have searched up and down, figuring I'd just hardware reset the thing but there really is no physical reset buton, eh?
How do I get my Tablet reset back to factory? Isn't there some kind of Sony bootloader (like HBOOT on HTC) which one could use to reset it?
I seem to be able to get it into fastboot mode, at least I get a reply for the command "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" (which is 0.5). How could I wipe/factory reset from here? Or can I just flash a recovery, even if unsure if bootloader is locked/unlocked? Or would I rather flash a FTF from here? Whats my best course of action?
Any input greatly appreciated

dont worry, had bricked mines too, followed the following steps and got it back woking ........
1.get a stock firmware (As an FTF file), and get sonyericsson Flashtool.
2.Turn off the device (hold volume up, and power, for about ten seconds, until you see the LED flash three times). The device is now off. Hold down the "volume down" button, and plug in the USB connection to your computer. The LED should turn green, and the S1boot device should appear.
3.You can now flash the device back to Sony stock using the flashtool
4. pick the firmware you downloaded (FTF FILE)....... and flash it ..... ALL DONE !!!
please let us know if you fixed it .....
OK, thanks I will try that. I have looked into that but as of now I could not find a localized version. Mine is from Germany, and all I find is Japan and US versions, so is there no European / Euro/MiddleEast (EMEA) version at all? Can I just use the most recent Japanese one and it will have all languages available?
I will check out the flashtool now, maybe I can just issue a data/cache wipe and start fresh with the already existing firmware? That would be a good feature, skipping potential problems by using the wrong / incompatible FTF I guess.
Thanks so far.
no problem at all ....

the best solution i would recommend you right now would be the following:-
1. download and install the official sony flash tool known as EMMA , link is :
http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/how-to-download-and-install-the-flash-tool/
2. after installing it, follow the instructions to flash the FTF file
(it will download and flash the GLOBAL UNBRANDED firmware, which will contain all various languages)
3.after installing it, your tablet will be running stock 4.2.2 ....... no wories at all
always keep in mind that it is really hard to brick a sony device, it is always recoverable !!!

Oh wow, you are great, thanks for the effort on your side. Unfortunately when I was fiddling with the tablet XDA took its server switch downtime and I missed the post until now.
However, fortunately I was not even forced to go the whole nine yards. After realizing that I would not quite get anywhere until I took the plunge and officially unlocked my bootloader. Once I had that done I was immediately able to issue a cache/data partition wipe command via fastboot command line. At that point I just had a brandnew out of the box state and restored my stuff from there without fiddling with FTF etc at all.
Thanks for your great help anyway. May I just bother you with one more question? Now that the glove dropped and the bootloader is open I might as well go for a decent recovery. However I am at a total loss when chosing one. There is CWM and TWRP, one is said to be buggy (no recovery throuch volume key power on) sometimes it says its for sgp321 and not the WiFI only, then someone claims the opposite.
Could you please point me to any of those recoverys, fully functional on a SGP311 and conveniently flashable via adb/fastboot? I am not familiar with flashtool and would hate to screw things up with a wrong click. The sdk command line tools I have more familiarity with... Also, its just about recovery for nandroid with me, no desire to run a custom ROM or CM 10/11 or something.
Thamks a lot and have a good one!

Hello Doomlord,
i hope you can help me out. i have tried to use your method "flash old kernel, to root 2.67".
the log of flashtool shows me that the tablet can't reboot, because it still in "flashmode".
in the log you can see i tried again the new kernel with the hope that everything will go right - but without luck.

i have disconnected the tablet from the windows pc and tried to reboot many many times, but nothing happens. screen stays black.
i hope you can help me out with some hints. rooting is no longer my goal - at the moment. it would be great to have my device alive.
thank you very much doomlord.

Bricked device
Hi, I am in a similar situation. I have an XTZ SGP311 which is completely stock apart from rooted with the vroot tool. I stupidly tried to change fonts with a font installer from the Play store, and when I rebooted the tablet it cycles between the Sony and Xperia screens. I am trying to unlock the bootloader to restore with EMMA. The EMMA tool recognises the tablet when I connect it in Fastboot mode. But when I try the fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version command I just get <waiting for device>
Can anyone give any advice on what I can try next to unbrick my XTZ?

Hold VOL+Power for 10 sec to switch it off. Then reflash with Flashtool 0.9.18.6 or restore with xperia-companion.
I tried this version of Flashtool and also the newer one, with no success.
I'm trying now a downgrade for 10.6.A.0.454 to see if works. Like it's a softbrick, I can get in the flashmode, turn off and even the Sony Companion does execute the repair update for the latest but when I turn on, it shows the Sony Xperia screen then black screen and hangs like that forever.
All of this with 100% battery full.
Now I'm willing to sacrifice a goat or a bigger animal to achieve success

Found a solution.
Just flashed using Flashtool 0.9.18.6 and downgrade to SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_CE
https://service-gsm.net/Sony/Xperia/Firmwares/SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_CE.rar/
It's working flawlessly
