XTZ SGP311 softbrick/bootlooped, how to factory reset? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I have a XTZ WiFi only (SGP311) which ran on stock with the latest official OTA (4.2.2 I think it was?)
Basically, the thing is completely unmodified with the exception of using permanent root through vroom utility. No custom recovery, nothing. (I am not sure if rooting via vroom also unloks the bootloader) Now yesterday, I restored some apps/data through Titaniumbackup and when rebooting the device after that things went sideways.
When turning on I just get up to the colormorphing ribbon animation which halts after a few seconds and then cycles the tablet into another reboot. I have searched up and down, figuring I'd just hardware reset the thing but there really is no physical reset buton, eh?
How do I get my Tablet reset back to factory? Isn't there some kind of Sony bootloader (like HBOOT on HTC) which one could use to reset it?
I seem to be able to get it into fastboot mode, at least I get a reply for the command "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" (which is 0.5). How could I wipe/factory reset from here? Or can I just flash a recovery, even if unsure if bootloader is locked/unlocked? Or would I rather flash a FTF from here? Whats my best course of action?
Any input greatly appreciated

dont worry, had bricked mines too, followed the following steps and got it back woking ........
1.get a stock firmware (As an FTF file), and get sonyericsson Flashtool.
2.Turn off the device (hold volume up, and power, for about ten seconds, until you see the LED flash three times). The device is now off. Hold down the "volume down" button, and plug in the USB connection to your computer. The LED should turn green, and the S1boot device should appear.
3.You can now flash the device back to Sony stock using the flashtool
4. pick the firmware you downloaded (FTF FILE)....... and flash it ..... ALL DONE !!!
please let us know if you fixed it .....

OK, thanks I will try that. I have looked into that but as of now I could not find a localized version. Mine is from Germany, and all I find is Japan and US versions, so is there no European / Euro/MiddleEast (EMEA) version at all? Can I just use the most recent Japanese one and it will have all languages available?
I will check out the flashtool now, maybe I can just issue a data/cache wipe and start fresh with the already existing firmware? That would be a good feature, skipping potential problems by using the wrong / incompatible FTF I guess.
Thanks so far.

no problem at all ....

the best solution i would recommend you right now would be the following:-
1. download and install the official sony flash tool known as EMMA , link is :
http://developer.sonymobile.com/services/flash-tool/how-to-download-and-install-the-flash-tool/
2. after installing it, follow the instructions to flash the FTF file
(it will download and flash the GLOBAL UNBRANDED firmware, which will contain all various languages)
3.after installing it, your tablet will be running stock 4.2.2 ....... no wories at all
always keep in mind that it is really hard to brick a sony device, it is always recoverable !!!

also before you do that, take a look at this link, i found the german FTF file for you

Oh wow, you are great, thanks for the effort on your side. Unfortunately when I was fiddling with the tablet XDA took its server switch downtime and I missed the post until now.
However, fortunately I was not even forced to go the whole nine yards. After realizing that I would not quite get anywhere until I took the plunge and officially unlocked my bootloader. Once I had that done I was immediately able to issue a cache/data partition wipe command via fastboot command line. At that point I just had a brandnew out of the box state and restored my stuff from there without fiddling with FTF etc at all.
Thanks for your great help anyway. May I just bother you with one more question? Now that the glove dropped and the bootloader is open I might as well go for a decent recovery. However I am at a total loss when chosing one. There is CWM and TWRP, one is said to be buggy (no recovery throuch volume key power on) sometimes it says its for sgp321 and not the WiFI only, then someone claims the opposite.
Could you please point me to any of those recoverys, fully functional on a SGP311 and conveniently flashable via adb/fastboot? I am not familiar with flashtool and would hate to screw things up with a wrong click. The sdk command line tools I have more familiarity with... Also, its just about recovery for nandroid with me, no desire to run a custom ROM or CM 10/11 or something.
Thamks a lot and have a good one!

Hello Doomlord,
i hope you can help me out. i have tried to use your method "flash old kernel, to root 2.67".
the log of flashtool shows me that the tablet can't reboot, because it still in "flashmode".
in the log you can see i tried again the new kernel with the hope that everything will go right - but without luck.

Bricked device
Hi, I am in a similar situation. I have an XTZ SGP311 which is completely stock apart from rooted with the vroot tool. I stupidly tried to change fonts with a font installer from the Play store, and when I rebooted the tablet it cycles between the Sony and Xperia screens. I am trying to unlock the bootloader to restore with EMMA. The EMMA tool recognises the tablet when I connect it in Fastboot mode. But when I try the fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version command I just get <waiting for device>
Can anyone give any advice on what I can try next to unbrick my XTZ?

Hold VOL+Power for 10 sec to switch it off. Then reflash with Flashtool 0.9.18.6 or restore with xperia-companion.

I tried this version of Flashtool and also the newer one, with no success.
I'm trying now a downgrade for 10.6.A.0.454 to see if works. Like it's a softbrick, I can get in the flashmode, turn off and even the Sony Companion does execute the repair update for the latest but when I turn on, it shows the Sony Xperia screen then black screen and hangs like that forever.
All of this with 100% battery full.
Now I'm willing to sacrifice a goat or a bigger animal to achieve success

Just flashed using Flashtool 0.9.18.6 and downgrade to SGP311_10.4.1.B.0.109_CE

[Q] OTA bricked SE walkman live after x unlock tool

hello!
i unlocked my SE walkman live yesterday with the x unlock tool from fastgsm.
today i bricked my phone, because i did an OTA update...
what can i do?
sorry for my english, i am from austria
i tried to flash my phone with the Flashtool and the firmware here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1291512
now, when i try to turn my phone on, the green light is just blinking. (going on an out)
please help me
Seems like you know flashtool procedure; download and flash all kernels on this site until you boot to recovery mode at least. If you manage to boot recovery you will most likely be able to install new rom(s). Try older kernels first cause i tried them all and none is bugged.
Why do people dont RTFM?
Its written in big letters on the Unlock Bootloader site of Sony Ericsson that you should NOT ACCEPT OTA UPDATES... :s
i am very sorry, but i first did the unlock via fastgsm, then i updatet via OTA and just than i read that this wasnt a good idea

how will i find out, that i am in the boot recovery mode?
I meant on this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1242 there are dozen of wt19i roms/kernels already. What you need for a start is a kernel with a recovery menu you can boot to, like this http://www.xda-developers.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/tumblr_l7wod1Dpi81qdw5hpo1_400.png?139d23
Try older kernels first. When you flash it, you may and may not, get a confirmation from a flashtool. Anyway, try to boot it in recovery mode as developer intended, pressing power when SE logo lights up, pressing VOL_UP after power on etc.
Easy start:

thx!
i will give them a try... i download a ftf-file (this is including the kernel, isnt it?) and flash it with the flash tool on Flashmode...
i think in the beginning i installed a wrong ftf-file. its called Xperia_Relock_bootloader.ftf i hope that isnt a problem... this is including the files loader.sin and preset.ta loader.sin should not be a problem because the other ftf-files i downloaded also includes this file... but i dont now whats up with the preset.ta file. think this is gona stay in my ROM
i tried a view ftf files until now... but nothing did happen. when i press the power on button on the phone there is just a green led going on for about 1 second. that was it... the display stays black...
i just can get a green light. VOL_UP after or while power on doesn´t work and i wont geht a blue light or something like that.
so... no i am going to try some other ftf files and hope that it will work anytime.
just tried SEUS... did not work. damn
nothing worked...
SEUS
many ftf-files with flash tool
WotanClient with newest and oldest rom
don´t know what else i can do?!
can someone help me please?
when i press the power on button, the green LED is just blinking all the time.

27/043/2011 10:43:39 - INFO - Device disconnected
but still the same problem... green light is blinking when power on
is it possible that my bootloader is corupt?
No wonder you bricked walkman, you're not reading anything. What can you possibly do with SEUS now?! Try to flash with flashtool some kernels, you cant break anythinng with that and read thread jaxzkeren gave you.
but if i want to flash some kernels i need to fastboot mode... or not?
as i tried to go into fastboot-mode (power on and volume up) there is nothing happend... no blue led light or anything like that...
i tried to flash all the ftf files you showed me with the flashtool on flashmode.
ok, did something similar recently, I fixed mine by flashing this ftf via flashtool, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343529
please let me know if this works
thank you all for your help!
unfortainly i already tried to flash these ftf... flashing worked fine. but it didnt fix my problem...
Same problem here.. plz help
Edit: dude, I have good news and bad news: the good one, is that your phone can be unbricked by simple doing "RESTORE" with s1tool.. the bad one: your phone need to be unlocked again.. 14.99€ to the garbage :/
this is how i fixed a ray with a similar issue..
the phone was unlocked and debranded using the wotanserver..
my mate accepted the ota update and all he could get was the green light..
1) get the wotanserver.com flashing client its free, create username and password then use it.. (or use s1tool)
2) flash the closest firmware to your original
3) on the s1tool do the restore option (cant remember if u need testpoint)
His phone came on and he is happy again...
hope this helps..

Cannot put Neo into flash mode (USB + Back) - is there any way to update my OS?

Cannot go into fastboot mode either (USB + Menu button) but at least Flashtool is able to reboot it into fastboot...
...is there any similar trick to reboot into flashmode? Flashtool only tells me to do the manual stuff for flashmode.
Or, alternatively, is there any way to perform a ROM update - I'm fine with the latest SE stock ROM, I just need that fixed auto-leveling audio feature I had in my Arc since last Summer -, maybe through some fastboot injection + multiple other steps?
It's running GB 2.3.2 aka 3.0.A.2.181 and I need 2.3.4 aka 4.0.A.2.0.XX; I have root but that's it, when I tried installing CWM it did install but does not work, phone freezes at bootup when I keep pushing Volume Down at the first logo to invoke CWM.
PC Companion also 2.0 craps out when I try to run the update, telling me to take it to a SEMC place...
Thanks in advance
Having the same problem.. cant go into flashmode USB + back
What do you mean by you cant go? what happens when you try to go into that mode?

I meant what I said: it does NOT go into flash mode. You can try 100x it will only turn on charging, that's all.
And yes, having owned X10 and Arc previously I've done this before multiple times so I know how it goes normally... not on this Neo though, that's for sure.
So the question is: is there any way to perform an update via fastboot...?

For the love of God, Asians: PLEASE STOP ****IN' PLUGGING THIS **** IN EVERY OTHER POST.
Is it locked to a specific network? My understanding is that it'll have fastboot locked and you won't be able to get into flash mode. Mine's a Neo V, though, so the Neo may be different.
If it's the same as the Neo V then you have to unlock fastboot as well as the bootloader.
If you go to the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to get into the service menu, I think one of the options tells you about simlocks. Sorry I can't be clearer, my phone won't go to that menu, presumably because I've got CM7 on there now.
Apologies if the Neo doesn't work the same way.

I've just found a similar post, which seems to have ended with the same conclusion:

To unlock fastboot, I paid someone else to do it with their credits for setool.
Of course, having a locked fastboot shouldn't stop you from upgrading but I'd guess it'd have to be to a specific version that your supplier has modified.
Maybe it sees the CWM install and views it as non-standard. It might be worth flashing a stock recovery and trying again.
I realise that Flashtool was able to put the phone into fastboot mode. I imagine this "locked fastboot" terminology doesn't quite cover what it really means.
You can use flash mode, back button, greenlight with a locked phone ( sim and bootloader). Fastboot menu key, blue light needs unlocked phone ( sim)

[Q] [Noob] Bootloader unlocking via Flashtool not working

I'm a complete noob, all i ever did was flashing a ROM, so please don't shoot me...
So i started by reflashing 2.3.3 stock firmware. I downloaded flashtool and installed it on my pc (0.7.1.0). I rooted the phone and installed xRecovery. So now i wanted to unlock my bootloader to flash FeraLab 17.
I installed the s1 tool to check if my phone is good to be unlocked, and it says it's fine. And now i go back to flashtool to start the unlocking: plugins> bootloader unlock> run.
So all is fine till i get to this point. When i unplug my phone and power it off and then press the back button and plug it back in it says the following:

Does anyone have a clue what the problem is here?

I have the same problem KingRafox. And i've tried several method including the link posted above.
Please make sure you have enabled usb-debugging in your current rom before starting with this!!
flash the azuzu kernel downgrade ftf with flashtool
disconnect usb cable, press power button until phone vibrates shortly and immidiatly connect the usb cable again (it is supposed to be stuck at SE logo)
start the batch file for unlocking bootloader, cause it says press any button before it starts, it won't start unlocking until you press any button
now wait until flashtool recognizes your x10 (if flashtool doesn't do anything, check third post please! thx)
close flashtool and then press any button in the cmd window that the unlocking process starts (please close flashtool, instead the bl unlock cmd and flashtool are constantly killing and restarting adb!!) <--- failed!!
after unlocking is finish you have to flash azuzu kernel upgrade
now power on phone to check if the phone is starting after the unlock (if you are using a custom kernel yet with the bypass method and get stuck in a bootloop enter xrecovery and clear dalvik-cache, then your phone should boot up again fine)
power off phone and flash dooms ck v05-fs with flashtool
now flash the wifi modules for dooms ck with recovery. (atm the update.zips are for xrec, but for sure please always check dooms kernel-thread if there is anything changed)
power on phone again and if everything is right, read the line under that one
WOOOHOOO!!! Here you are with unlocked bootloader, custom kernel directly loaded AND without reflashing any rom, means you have kept your current installation
If you aren't seeing the se logo at turning on phone, but directly the custom kernel logo, you were succesfully. If you want to enter xrecovery you have to spam the back button now if the xperia logo appears instead of the se logo.

I've followed these instruction but it failed when running the unlock file (qsd8250_semc.cmd). It says that it failed to get root access or something. (I'll post the log later on).
I also flashed to stock 2.1, downgrade the kernel and tried using x10 Bootloader Unlock Tool (with the big "Unlock Bootloader" button). But failed.
If anyone have any other methods or any suggestion, i'm all open.
Thanks for replying.
Guys,
I've finally unlocked my bootloader using "The proper method".
The mistake (i think) was, I was on generic 2.3.3 when I use this method.
I flashed back to generic 2.1 and ran the unlock tool. When finished I check back with S1tool, my device show "r" and not "R" Yeaa...
Note that, I failed to unlock my bootloader when I was on 2.1 and 2.3.3 using latest Flashtool.
Thanks guys.
Guys,
I encountered the same situation when I using the least version of Flashtool (0.7.1.0), it always display - WARN - Cancelled
So I roll back to use Flashtool (v0.6.8.0) then plugins> bootloader unlock> run, it works
i'm using FlashTool_0.2.9.1-GBready_root_xRec, flash without any error. Try find it. .
Guys
Make sure your SEMC SIM LOCK status supported by doom kernel (forgot about status lock or unlock cause I tried only 1 times and get lucky)
from my expirence.. some many devices will be locked for the networks and it will give you EMERGENCY CALL and you OUT OF LUCK!

What the hell, I'm still having the same "disconnect" problem as in the original post.
Let me ask you all if I'm missing something here:
1) I have a new, Vodafone-locked X10 mini Pro.
2) I downloaded Flashtool latest
3) I used it to root the phone (ok, it worked)
4) I use the Plugin menu, then Unlock Bootloader, then you know the rest.
Am i missing something here?
Should I change kernel or install a recovery first?
If only every device was as easy as the SGS's...
Thanks guys
try this

Thanks DJ.
I've managed to Unlock the bootloader still yesterday, i don't know why or how, but it worked.
The difference from my previous post is that I started the process with the phone already in flash mode, then reboot, then flash mode again, and then the Flashtool did everything (even saying Bootloader: UNROOTABLE)
My difficulty after that was to flash CWM. It's funny but that next step is not explained anywhere.
Are these the correct procedures?
Stock Phone > Flashtool:Root > Flashtool:Unlock Bootloader > CWM (???) > Flash Image > Flashtool:Kernel
It's strange why:
1) There is no CWM to flash from Flashtool
2) The kernel cannot be flashed from CWM
CWM recovery is built in to kernels like doomlords v6 multi recovery or FXP kernel. You will have to flash a CWM based kernel to get CWM recovery
Sent from my X10i using xda premium
There should be an install recovery button in ft which allows u to install cwm or xrecovery
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Or flashing KCernel v3, got CWM recovery and Xrecovery in one.

[Q] Can't boot into flash mode

Hi,
I've been using CM7.2 with fxp 119 for some time and today tried an upgrade to fxp125.
Used flashtool to create a bundle with the kernel.sin that came in the zip file.
Flashed to x10.
Booted into cwm and selected install cm7.2 zip from sd card. All ok so far.
But when it rebooted it got stuck at the fxp boot screen, left it for about 30 mins and still nothing. So I pulled the battery and tried to boot it again, still nothing (stuck at fxp boot screen).
I tried wiping everything and re-installing cm7.2 but then it came up with an error (script aborted: assert failed: getprop) which I think means I deleted too much.
My next thought was to re-flash the kernel but now the phone won't boot into flash mode, holding the back button does nothing and it carries on into full phone mode then gets stuck at boot screen.
I tried varying combinations of buttons and try to do it quickly in flash mode before it jumps back to normal mode (which has worked long enough to flash a new kernel via flashtool) but it won't stay in flash mode long enough to get PC companion to repair it.
Any ideas on how to get it back up and running again on any rom?
from what i can understand is you CAN flash but its failing on pccompanion ?
so do you think you'll be able to flash a full rom trough flashtool ?
like this one for example
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698204
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FT 0.8 is mandatory to flash this bundle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah for some reason after a lot of attempts it did a couple of times. I had to preload Flashtool then held the back button whilst putting in the battery and plugging the USB at the same time. However it doesn't seem to do even do that any more.
If I plug it into a mains charger it tries to boot but stops at the bootscreen. If I try to plug it into the laptop on normal mode it tries does the same, if I plug it in whilst holding the back button it just tries to boot as normal then freezes at the bootscreen.
It just won't boot into flash mode at all any more.
ive helped someone before with about the same problem .
and at the end it turned out to be something silly .
so to make sure could you do the following steps.
1-Flashtool (select what to flash) then it will ask you to unplug, turn off phone etc.
2-unplug
3-take out battery
4-Replug
5-Hold back button and keep holding it
6-insert battery as your holding back button.
try flashing something you know that works / worked before . or the full rom linked i gave you.
the reason i ask you to do this is, if you cant flash or enter recovery what left right ?
Yep, am doing as you describe with a rom I know has worked before, but no matter how long I hold the back button it still starts to try to fully boot.
I've got the newest Flashtool but can't get that full ftf you linked, that file site doesn't seem to work for me, hasn't for months, just says it start downloading but never does.
The message from Flashtool (sounds serious):-

ok next step is to try SEUS
instead of pc companinon.
http://sony-ericsson-update-service.en.uptodown.com/
get back to stock if possible and try again.
easy pesy
just revert back to stock 2.3.3 rom
open seus->support->update phone->in red color repair phone would be written in the window PRESS IT->wait then select your phone from the list....->it says take battery out for 5 secs->press back button and keep pressing it then connect the usb cable.....->voila it starts downloading stock rom from internet and then would update....
took 25mins with me
p.s till the process of selecting your phone you dont need to connectit just swtich off your phone.....
when I google it it seems to always point me in the direction of bootloader problems .
ERROR - ERR_SEVERITY="MAJOR";ERR_CLASS="SECURITY_CLASS";ER R_DYNAMIC="SIN header verification failed"

answers that helped solve related!
If you didn't already have your bootloader unlocked and tools in place to reload the Android operating system (ie, ROMs or disk images), I strongly suspected you are completely screwed.
You can install an OS from scratch on your phone, but you need a specialized environment and tools to do so and those are often proprietary and/or secret. It is far easier to load a disk image (ROM) than do a base install. Either way, part of the process is an unlocked bootloader so that you can boot into an environment/tool instead of the existing OS. If you don't have a way to boot into something besides the installed system and have pooched that system - generally the only way you as a consumer have available to hack the bootloader - then you're up the creek. – Logos Apr 6 at 12:34
so basicly there saying if you did not unlock bootloader and a way of booting OTHER then the system itself ... you bricked it ..
if you cant flash
cant use recovery
whats left ?
Cheers for the comments about SEUS. However, before I had a chance to read them I had already read on another forum about someone using Wotan to repair a different model of Xperia that was in a similar state to mine. So I paid the fee and the thing worked.
It makes think it was something more to do with my laptop environment than the phone. Because the Wotan client came with it's own driver, which my device loaded and used when I connected it holding the back button, this seemed to make the phone stay in flash mode when connected.
From this experience I don't think holding the back button puts an X10 into flash mode, it merely asks the host 'can I be in flash mode?' and either the host says yes or no.
Awsome to hear you getting it up and running
Mind me asking if you installed flashtool drivers?

How did this began?
If you have developwr options enabled you can try adb pull command.
If what you want to backup is on the sdcard(internal storage) fear not, reflashing will not erase it.

And it's stuck there since? Have you tried to force reboot, power + volume up untill you feel 1 vibration, or power off (1+) 3 vibrations?
Your options are limited.
You can still unlock the bootloader and flash custom kernel with CWM recovery that supports mounting usb, or adb, or use PC Companion/flashtol.
I have flashed my Xperia P many times with PC Companion and flashtool and never lost any data on internal memory.

I forgot unlocking needs the code from Sony and for the you need the IMEI number.
Just flash, there no other options realy.
You will probably need to use repair since the phone is not on.
