[Q] Wifi Auto-connecting? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Is there any way to disable the Galaxy SIII from automatically connecting to wifi networks? It's a nice feature to have, but not when the wifi is really bad in certain locations and it just drains battery.

cant you just turn wifi off?

[Q] How do you turn off 3G without turning off GPS?

I'm only planning to use my Streak as an iPod replacement, any ideas on how to turn off the cellular radios?
I know you can put it into Airplane mode, but doesn't that shut down the GPS as well?

If there is no sim card, there is no data. Data meaning 3g, gprs, or H

[Q] Any benefit by disabling Data Network when WiFi is enabled?

If you enable WiFi the 3g/H/H+, and so forth, icon disappear, but if you got to settings-wireless and network-mobile network settings ->Use packet data is still enabled. So am wondering does the network data go to sleep while WiFi is on? So i won't gain any battery by disabling data while WiFi is on? Or would i gain some battery by doing this?

Data is still on even when the icon isn't displayed. You will save battery disabling it manually because it will disable the data radio.

Okay, thanks for the fast reply =) Another question, with data disabled and wifi on, is there any feature that will be disabled because data is disabled? Like won't i be able to receive MMS for example?

How do you prefer WiFi over Data?

Hi guys,
Do you know if AT&T automatically prefers WiFi over 4G? If not, is there a way to set it so that I can save on my 2GB limit imposed by ATT? thanks

Set WiFi sleep policy to "never" - then the only things that will use cell data when you are connected to an access point are market checkins (but not market downloads) and MMS. Maybe not even MMS.
Note that the phone won't automatically connect to open APs that you haven't connected to before.
If you have wifi sleep policy set to "when screen is off", background data will be over the cell connection.

Sorry but I can't find this setting. I'm looking in power saving settings and the only thing i see is turn off wifi when NOT connected with mobile AP. Does mobile access point mean wifi or cell data?

thanks,
just checked and its set to never.
I think you want to control access of data retrieval via cell network, right?
what I did was set the receiver options to airplane mode and then only enable the WiFi. That keeps the cell net from connecting. Also d/l an app to monitor your usage for piece of mind.

With APN On/Off, it's a free app. I turn off the data and can still do everything else. It even has an option to keep MMS enabled

How to Use Mobile network without turning wifi off

Hey guys,
Is there any way to use Mobile Networks without turning Wifi off?
Currently, as soon as I turn Wifi On, if there's a know network around, it will connect to Wifi and obviously Mobile Network (3G) is not used...
However, is there any chance to still use Mobile Networks without:
- Turning Wifi OFF
- "Forget" known networks
Reason for all this is that I'm having an issue with my phone... When I turn Wifi On, it gets "stuck" turning it on, and the only way to get wifi connection is by turning phone off and then on again (seems like a known bug, but nothing seems to fix it)
So what I want to do is to keep Wifi On all the time, but always use Mobile Networks unless I want to connect to wifi...
Any idea?
I had the same problem a little while ago, other software worked for me.
There is a workaround that helped me when wifi was stuck
Go to settings and search wifi hot spot! Turn that on and off and try if the normal wifi is off again.
It doesnt work always, but you can try. But i would say put some new firmware on the phone!

if you go to settings, you see wireless&networks. you can click on "more"
you will see Tethering & portable hotspot click on it, and there is the option for the portable wifi hotspot.
enable it, and disable it again, next thing is to check if you can turn on wifi the normal way again.
i hope this helps for you!
Will give it a try!! Thanks!

Wifi notification

I have an issue with wifi notification, not sure if it's hardware or software (that's how EMUI is).
my previous phone always notify me of available wifi networks when I am not connected to one, my HM20P doesn't do that. I literally have to go into Settings - Wireless & Networks - Wifi ...... to see which wifi network is available to log in.
Also, when I press on Wifi in the Notification area, it just toggled Wifi On or Off, doesn't open up Wifi Settings......is that normal?
International model, bought in canada.
