Right after I replaced the rear camera in my phone it seems like the proximity sensor died as when I try to call the screen immediately turns off and locks until the call has ended.
Proximity sensor finder indicates that there is an object 3cm away but there is nothing actually there and the indicator is just stuck on 3cm.
What should I do?
I'm on cm9 btw.

Same issue
I have my stock camera and run CM9 AOKP, and I have similar issues with the proximity sensor. I read somewhere that it was an issue with CM in general and always discounted it as such. I did set up volume rocker wake and use that to wake the screen on call.
Do you use facelock? Try disabling it. Its a well known bug in CM9 that effecting proximity sensor...

Using the volume buttons doesn't wake the phone.
Note sure what facelock is.
Thanks for the answers.
my wifes proximity sensor started acting up along with many other problems. this all happened right after the last OTA update. I sent it in to moto for repair. I was suprized i didnt need a reciept. I bought it on cl used. went to motos site and they showed me how to check if warranty was still good
Phone was imported so no warranty is available.

Ok, I figured and putting the proximity sensor really close to a light source makes the screen wakes.
Also, using proximity sensor finder I did see that the proximity sensor responds when putting it really close to the light source.
It seems that while replacing the back camera, the rubber cover of the proximity sensor fell off. Is there any way I can replace it or improvise something that might suite?
Thanks.

Hi,
I'd like to know if X10 has that proximity sensor, that, during calls for example, can detect if your face is near of the phone, turning off the screen and saving some battery. I'm my opinion this is very useful.
Yes it does, although the stated usage is to avoid the face interacting with the touch capability. I don't know if it turns the screen off.
at least for my old Motorola Cliq the sensor is able to turn the screen on and off..
I haven't had any problems talking with the phone against my cheek. Read on a swedish forum about someone getting sms during a call and seemingly had answered the sms with his cheek. Needless to say, it was filled with junk^^

Yeah, I read that too! But I have never had any problems like that myself. Works like a charm!
Yes. It has a proximity sensor. It is near the top to the right of the speaker. It will disable the touch and dim the screen (which will also turn off after a time) when it is against your face.
Does anyone know if the sensitivity of the proximity sensor can be tweaked. Mine only blanks the screen when i put my finger within about 1-2 mm of the screen. Now i know i have big ears, but if i position the phone so that it is hard against my face but the proximity sensor is over the centre of my ear the phone comes on. Anyone else get that?

does the proximity sensor also works in pants or shirt??
for example: i pick up a call using bluetooth and the phone is in my pants, it seems that the phone screen n touch screen is on... if i move my body and accidentaly touch the "end call" button i suddenly hang up... this also happen if i accidentaly hit the speaker key on the screen... i know donut 1.6 doesnt have this problem, but after update to eclair 2.1 the screen doesnt shut if i pick up a call using a bluetooth...
Hi I have just got a HTC radar as a company phone and am getting some odd behavior when dialling
Sometimes it works like expected other times when I press call the screen goes off and will not come back on no matter what I do until the other end pick the call up
Now that's not so bad until you call voicemail when nothing makes screen come on ie tried moving away from anything (in case proximity sensor turning it off ) tried the on/off button volume even camera button nothing works so I can't press option 1/2 etc
Only way I can end the call is to remove bottom cap and take sim card out
This happens on around 50% of all calls and is really bugging me , if its connected to a bluetooth car kit ,the car kit can end it ok
Everytime on bt kit the screen goes off with pressing call
Anyone else having this problem?

Do you have a screen protector? If so it could be one of poor quality and is interfering with your screen. Remove it if you got it. Also it can mess up your ambient light sensor/proximity sensor.

Have reset device still the same I'm guessing it has a problem , sad to say but HTC aren't impressing me lately even thinking of replacing my sensation with a galaxy nexus soon :-(

I'm having the same issue too. But i do have it all the time, with every single call i make.
Lets test something here:
Grab a flashlight and turn it on
Cover the light sensor in the upper left with your finger and make sure the 3 capacitive buttons light up.
Uncover them
Now shine the flash light directly into the light sensor
Did the lights turn off? If not get your phone replaced. If they did then you or something is covering the light sensor. The light sensor can turn the screen off at around 1".
I wrote to HTC, they replied after 1-2 hours:
"this is a functional problem caused by a sensor inside the phone" ... "if you can please do get a replacement phone if you have just bought the phone"

For me, the light turned off. In fact I do not need to shine a torchlight. If I cover the top part of the display the 3 capacitive buttons light up. If I uncover, the light disappear. Any ideas? The screen is turning off every time I make a call.
That tests the ambient light sensor(s) - most phones have 2 or 3 - but it doesn't test the proximity sensor... (because the button lights should be tied to the ambient).
Either way, I have not heard of this issue, though HTC has pushed out a firmware update over zune for the Titan recently. I'd recommend to check that, and if there is no update/doesn't fix, then replace the phone.

Is my sensor working properly then? I have a screen protector installed. Is that the problem? I have not tried taking off the protector yet.
You should try that. Some cheap screen protectors can mess with it. I know this was the case with some protectors on the dell venue pro early on.

o.0!? The proximity sensor is normally a led rangefinder in the infrared frequencies. Light sensor could cause lots of false positives...
Sent from my SGH-i937 using Board Express
Fixed the problem. You must remove the clear stock screen protector...it distorts the sensor.
I've been saying that all along
I did a test. Peeled off a bit of the screen protector, enough to expose the sensor. Made a call. The screen didn't blank. So it's the screen protector.
Hi guys I have just recently bought a Radar from bay and im having the same problem, but this time there is no screen protector.
If I cant get a refund form the seller, can I get a warranty repair seeing as though im a second owner?
Cheers
I think I have a small problem.
When someone calls, the caller ID is displayed on screen. But at this time, the proximity sensor does not work. Only after I have accepted the call is the proximity sensor activated.
Due to the proximity sensor being disabled, while taking the phone out from my trouser pockets, lots of times I mistakenly touch the screen and the call is rejected even before I can get the phone out. And sometimes the call gets rejected by its own due to the clothing touching the screen(though this should not happen actually. But I have seen this happen with my phone)
So I am trying to find out if it is a problem with the custom ROM I am using or is it the standard feature of P500?
I am using OpenOptimus 1.172
of course when the caller ID shown proximity sensor won't come into place, or not how are you gonna accept/reject a call!?
Anyway this thing happens in all android phones with the proximity sensor

When my phone is in my pocket, what is the use of turning on the screen? Until I get it out of my pocket, I wont be able to see the screen anyway.
And when I take my phone out of my pocket, the proximity sensor won't be blocked anyway(it will be in free air) so it will turn on the screen anyway then.
Because of this useless thing, I have missed many a call
Hi,
My gx2 was running cm10 and everything was working fine up until recently when my lcd screen broke.
So I ordered a new one and replaced the broken one, the repair has gone well , also the screen was good. Except there was a problem with the proximity sensor, when i tried to make a call the screen would go black and not switch on again, the only thing I could do was to take out the battery.
So I thought maybe I damaged the proximity sensor somehow while replacing the screen, so I bought a new sensor. The same Problem.
So I thought maybe it was firmware related even though I did not change the firmware and before the screen broke everything was working fine.
I flashed a stock rom, again everything went well , phone was working except the same problem with the proximity sensor.
Anyone know what that could be? Could I have damaged the motherboard somehow, even if that is unlikely because I was always extra careful and patient.

1. You should check if the sensor is really damaged. You can use e.g. Android Sensors app from Play store.
2. If it is broken, then try to disable it in ROM settings. I think there is at least an option in phone/dialer settings.
Maybe that can help.
Good luck !

I know how to disable the sensor, when I disable it calling works, but I want the sensor working . The thing is I thought I damaged it while replacing the screen, so I bought a new sensor, but the problem is still there.
android sensor box shows me a value of 0,0
typing in *#0*# and then "sensors" : the screen is always green an the phone is vibrating PROXIMITY: 13
the phonetester app shows Proximity sensor :near
I just figured something out.
The proximity sensor works when I hold the phone against a light source, when i do the *#0*# test and hold it against the light, the screen turns to white and the sensor works as it should( when i hold my hand near it, screen switches green and phone vibrates) , but only as long as it is near the light source.
Could the sensor just not be calibrated correctly? Is there a way to calibrate it?
than you
I noted each time I make a call, the display immediately turned black. It auto turn black without me even taking up the hone up to my ears. I needed to press the power switch to have the display lit up again. Is this a proximity sensor defect ??

Yea I'm dealing with the same issue on my at&t model, it's definitely a proximity sensor issue. Also, I find that the proximity sensor functions relatively OK outside of the phone app when I'm on a call in terms of lighting of fading to black...I haven't found a fix yet, hopefully it's a software issue though somethings telling my it's not... Just another defect in a long line of LG phones as of late

I have a same issue but clean the proximity sensor and it will work. The proximity sensor is next to the speaker. Clean with your t-shirt or jeans.

I've cleaned it several times to no avail
I have noticed occasional "quirkiness" while in the phone app, but not to the point of requiring a battery pull. Example, connected via Bluetooth, while plugged to a charger in a call, no way to wake the phone without pulling the charger.

Thank you. Thank you. Your proposed solution works very well. Now no more this problem. Had never thought the sensor could be dirty or blocked over time. I had the phone only about 2 months
Problem update
Okay, I've found new info on the proximity sensor problem. Firstly, I noticed that my proximity sensor still works with the second screen, if I cover it up when my screen is off it goes black and comes back on when I remove my finger. Secondly, if I was on the phone but not actually in the phone app it would behave normally sometimes. Now today I found out that when I'm in the phone app, if I'm talking on the phone through the speaker the screen does not go black, as soon as I take it off speaker, the screen goes immediately blank. Still have not found a fix, but just more info that may help define what the actual problem is.
anyone have any update on this? this issue seems to be getting worse for me
Same issue, drives me nuts. This phone is a disappointment to me overall. Have an S7 on pre-order with Verizon. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
Had same issue just happen on the AT&T LG Escape 2. (Yes I know its a year since this thread was started)
It was the proximity sensor but the "T-shirt wipe" method didn't work for me.
What I did realize there was some gunk on the sensor, and I used a cotton swab (Q-tip) with alcohol and rubbed it till it was visibly clear of gunk. Now it works fine again..
