If the phone doesn't even go to the bootloader (hardbrick) or go to download mode (full softbrick) it will not work.
In the second case you can usually use a USB-Jig (301kOhm resistor between pin3 and pin5 of the microUSB-port) to force it into 'Factory download mode'.

My phone doesn't go past a black screen, no led light or anything. Is there a way to fix it or should I just try and return it? What does this mean to the layman "a USB-Jig (301kOhm resistor between pin3 and pin5 of the microUSB-port)"
Thanks in advance. I'm knowledgeable in some of the rooting stuff, not sure where I went wrong. Rooted and then tried to install a kernel through clockwork, when it said install aborted. Then I went to reboot phone and it went black. I tried taking out the batter for a while and putting it back in, but nothing. Is there a reset button on this that might help me?

Sorry to say but that most probably is a hard-brick; you won't be able to revive it without hardware. In best-case scenario a JIG (I'll explain below) otherwise you need to have it JTAG'ed by a repair shop.
However before you do; try pulling the battery for 30 minutes, plugging it into the charger for a few hours, pulling the battery again for 30 minutes and then try to start it.

A JIG is a Micro-USB plug without the cable which has only 2 of the 5 connectors (MicroUSB has 5 instead of the normal 4 pins) in use;
they are bridged via a 301 kOhm Resistor (Electronic component) which triggers the phone to go in Download mode even if it doesn't react to anything else and have been designed for easy restoration through Samsung shops. However they are easy to come by (+- 2 bucks on eBay) or to build yourself (you need only very little soldering skills)
Should a JIG not be sufficient, you need the phone JTAG'ed. JTAG is a sort of "standard" to access the internal circuitry of a device and execute commands on it. In this case to re-flash the stage1 bootloader to gain access to Download mode.
Most people are familiar with it as being the means of jailbreaking Xbox1's and the first generation of Xbox360.
However these devices are rather expensive (+- 200 to 300 bucks for a phone-kit) so you'll have to go to a repair shop which should cost around 20 bucks.

One question...
I got this process fine. I understand it. My S3 (SGH-1747 ATT)gets stuck on the boot image.I have odin3.7, I got the driver. But my computer and Odin does not recognize the cellphone when I attach it by way of USB. It does make a noise when its attached to the computer, it just doesnt recognize it like it would say an ipod. Any suggestions to fix this?

i bricked my phone by changing the permissions of my s3's system folder to r-rw--r or something like that. now i can only access odin mode and download mode

Good on you for searching but try not to post in dead threads.
Do a factory reset in recovery and if that doesn't work reflash your custom rom or if using stock go into download mode and reflash stock.

It's not soft bricked a soft brick will boot up but only boot into recovery or download mode it won't boot system and hard brick is totally unresponsive won't turn on won't charge won't do anything you sound like you have a dead lcd like my old phone if it responds to touch then your system has most probably booted up

My phone works fully. I can receive phone calls and by guessing the swipe action I can accept the call. I have tried it with Viber and I can speak to the caller. So basically the phone is completely functional except the touch screen is completely black. I mean when I reboot the phone after taking out the battery and then putting it back and by pressing power on button, the phone boots up and gets ready but the I do not see anything on the screen (no samsung logo etc, nothing). The the indicator light on the top left and everything else works.
I thought that I will be able to put the phone to the download mode and then use ODIN to flash a ROM but I have not yet been able to put the phone in Download mode (yes I am using the right key combinations).
I have tried kies to get connected to the phone, but as the phone is locked with Pin number, I cannot use kies to get the files out (though it's not super important, I am quite happy to loose everything).
So the question is, how can I can get this screen back to life, or is this gone now and I need a new screen?
