Customize a factor reset image ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if it is possible for me to create my own customized factory image with apps I hate removed and new ones added that I like so when I do a factory reset it restores the phone to the image I created, not the one that comes from the factory ?

Are you rooted? You can use the clockwork recovery mod to do a backup. Then you can restore it any time you want. This isnt a "factory reset" because clearly anything changed from the factory reset is no longer "factory". This will achieve your goal though.
clockwork mod site:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/
the XDA wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/ClockworkMod_Recovery
You need to have root and then install the clockwork recovery mod before you can do this. You should be able to find all the info you need on google/other threads here. If not, let me know and I can help.
NOTE:You will need ROOT not only to do the back up, but to restore it as well. This is done in the reovery menu of your phone, you will need the specific key combo for your phone to go into recovery after restarting the phone.

Hi there
I am in a situation where I would really like to make a custom factory reset image; I have some devices to give out to people which have been highly customized. If they decide to do a factory reset then I want the image I've provided to be flashed to the device (Chinese dual-sim ICS phone) to be initialized, not the Chinese firm's image.
Is there any way to achieve this??

Root,
Move required apps to system.
Delete system apps you don't want if any.
Unroot.
Factory reset.
Or use nandroid via Cwm recovery as mentioned above.

Ah so apps in system will not get removed on a factory reset? That's interesting, thank you. Is there any way for me to preserve app settings in a factory reset? So that, for example, as well as Go Launcher being installed, the selected theme and home screen layouts would be restored? If not, I suppose it's no big issue, but it would be really helpful if I could get that fixed up.

That wouldn't be suitable. I'm actually hoping to remove the CWM recovery before handing these devices out!

Have you established what it was that caused the boot loop? It might be worth taking a minute out and trying to work that out before progressing, if it was flashing a custom ROM, perhaps you should try that again, did you wipe etc beforehand?
So you plan is to
1. enter CWM recovery
2. take full Nadroid Backup
3. Perform Wipe
4. Re-flash current ROM (I'm guessing from ZIP file on SD not RUU?)
5 go back into CWM recovery
6. restore data partition?
Sounds good in theory and yes I believe that your messages will exist if you manage to restore data, I can't see what harm it will do - as you need to progress from where you are now.
Although, as I don't know what device you have and how you were intending ro re-flash your current ROM, you need to be careful that in re-flashing if you're using an RUU that you don't lock your bootloader or loose the custom recovery or you may have more work to do!!!
This is why im in a boot-loop
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1212063
Im running 'I9000XWJVB' stock.
1. Backup with ClockworkMod Recovery.
2. Flash stock ROM with odin.
3. After my phone boots up restore the backup i made.
Sound good?
Cheers, James

Ah, yes, I recall posting on that thread yesterday - shame you couldn't resolve it.
But this route does sound more hopeful. The steps do sound good. Although ensure that you only do a selective restore after the flash as you don't want to perform a full restore or you'll end up back where you are now. So I reckon that you'll only want to restore the data partition.
After restoring the data partition from the backup, I'd suggest that you wipe the cache & dalvik cache from within CWM, before you reboot.
If you use any third party messaging application you may want to install that before you restore.

Glad to be able to help....I'll be honest I learnt there to....
Although something for the future:
1. Always take a fresh backup before making any un-tested change.
2. Always have you current ROM ZIP on SD card at all times.
3. You can probably export your messages to your SD card (just in case)
Now press THANKS. button.

where do i get the original recovery to flash???
so i flash it in clockwork recovery, and when phone reboots it is back to OEM????
what i mean is the stock GS3 software.. when i am in clockwork recovery, i wipe the system and i flash the stock software, where do i download it from?? thanks..
So you don't want to unroot you just want to use the stock rom?

see if this helps. i know when i had to unroot it worked and kept all my data but if you are taking it back to the store for warranty you may want to try the app called "triangle away". the app makes it so they cannot tell if you have flashed any ROMs.
check out the development section for how to go back to stock. once i got it back up and running..i also went to settings, privacy to do a system reset as i didnt want them to see superuser app when i took my phone in to the store.
I am still running the stock Rom, I just rooted the phone and flashed clockwork recovery.. I'm trying to do a factory data reset. To reset the phone back to the out of box state. I am under the assumption that when a phone is rooted and a custom recovery is flashed you can not just go into settings and factory reset your phone or you will brick it. Am I correct in this assumption? And if I am corect what I think I have to do is flash the original recovery, then I can reset the phone to factory settings which will wipe it back to stock and remove the root.. correct? I am just not sure where to get the factory recovery. Doesn't clockwork recovery replace the factory recovery?
Yes factory reset after having cwma will not restore back to stock. You''ll have to flash stock via computer or mobile Odin. The link provided above should be helpful

If you just want to unroot - removing Superuser.apk, su and busybox works.
CWM will stay though.
Then do factory reset and format internal sdcard. That will remove all user data.
So.. if you have clockwork recovery, and you factory reset the phone, it will put the factory recovery back?
I thought trying to reset while having a recovery flashed would lock up the phone...

If your still having trouble here, the answer this question & alot of others is at galaxys3root.com. It's one of Zedomax's sites that will give you clearly labeled & very easy to follow instructions to unroot for warranty return. He also includes a video where he will walk you step by step through the process. This is a great Site & you can find some great tutorials on the gs3, as well as rom reviews, so be sure to bookmark it! I hope I've helped
no no, i dont want to just follow instructions.. i am trying to understand CWM. i know how to use it, but every phone i ever rooted i was never able to reset back to factory settings because i was never sure if it would screw my phone up and i am trying to learn if it is safe t do. Does CWM replace the factory hboot or just install along with it? if i am rooted and i have CWM flashed, can i still reset to factory settings like normal? and if i do what will happen? will i still have root and CWM?? can i reset back to factory in ANY rom i flash safely? all that resetting back to factory does is remove accounts and .data files correct?? when you do a wipe in CWM it removes the entire OS, then you flash whatever rom you want.. when you reflash the factory ROM, unroot and remove CWM, hboot is still there correct? you dont have to reinstall hboot, right? you just have to make sure you reflashed the original ROM and uninstall root and CWM and then your back to original right?? i am just trying to understand it all thats all.. i know i can follow directions, but i am trying to learn. any site i find explaining CWM, it just explains what it does, i am trying to learn HOW it works so i can feel safe and i dont have to worry about bricking my phone. i was always too afraid to reset any phone i ever rooted because i never fully understood how CWM worked.. i always thought of our phones as a PC, where as a PC has a recovery partition with the software backed up in it, and i always think CWM wiped it clear, so if i try to reset the phone it will be looking for a partition that's not there. but now i think my PC analogy is wrong, and all a factory reset does is remove the .data files, not re install the software.. im trying to figure which one is true..
Bump
Guess were all in the same boat lol
after flashing stock back to the device, it also goes back to stock recovery. after boot, you still have all apps ex. titanium but once u open it will say no root access. u can then go to settings, privacy, and factory reset to get rid of titanium, etc so it is complete stock. no one would be able to tell of your past..lol. i was rooted earlier in week and made mistake of resetting to factory reset before unrooting. nothing bad happened and i unrooted and factory reset to take it to the store hope this clears up stuff.
if you are returning to a store flashing a stock Rom was all I needed to do a warranty exchange.

Upgrading a custom ROM

I have a general simple question: I have a custom ROM. Obviously it is installed via recovery mode. These ROMs are being updated every so often. Now the question is when I want to update my ROM, should I factory reset my phone and start from the scratch or simply I need to use Recovery mode again?

From my very humble experience you should go into recovery mode and 1. wipe cache 2. advanced>> wipe dalvik cache
and then install zip from sd card and reboot. Factory reset probably isn't a good idea if you're just updating your ROM and want to keep your apps and settings.
Good luck

Thank you. So developers must program their new versions that can upgrade their older versions. What if we already have installed some other zip file from recovery? For example something to change notification bar. I guess than a factory reset is necessary, right?

and how can i get cwm method to my xpera mini pro sk17a
no you don't have to do a factory reset in that case too. but those modifications will be gone.
i recently upgraded my
ROM and the personalizations i made such fonts and boot animations were overwritten so i guess that shouldn't be a problem
i am no expert but i think you shouldn't factory reset unless you have a problem. the option is there anytime you need it but it's not necessary or at least i think so

How to factory reset

Hi guys,
Can someone help me with a factory data reset? Im having horrific battery problems since updating OTA from ICS to JB. I've tried all the usual suggestions and am getting nowhere so i understand a lot of folks do a factory data reset and it helps some..
So the current status of my device is stock ROM and rooted with CF. I have titanium installed. If i understand this correctly i need to is it backup all apps individually from within Titanium?
Is it then just a case of clicking factory data reset from within the S3 menu? I guess I'm on a custom recovery and not stock recovery because im rooted with CF? Does this make any difference to the factory data reset procedure?
Many thanks

Yes, just click it and you will have brand new jelly bean, but still rooted. Install titanium and restore all necessary applications. I did factory reset two day ago.
there are 2 ways to factory reset..
1. from the settings menu (i am sure you are aware of this)
2. from recovery; stock recovery or cwm recovery
if you are wondering what a cwm recovery is, it is a custom recovery for rooted phones.. so you can go over at the Original Development section and find the thread for this recovery.. you will have to use odin to flash

Great. Were you rooted before you did the reset? So having a custom recovery (if i have one as i'm rooted) wont effect this? All the titanium backups of the apps i take [presumably are fine as there stored on the SD card which doesn't get touched during factory data reset. Is this right?
Thanks guys

you can still do a factory reset within the menu OR do a factory reset through Recovery (either Stock or Custom)
but since you are rooted, it is rather suggested to flash a custom recovery such as CWM Recovery

Great thanks for that. As I'm not really used to flashing things hence my noob questions. I rebooted into CWM and i can see the wipe date /factory reset option. Are there any other options i should run here i.e. wipe cache partition?
Final question after i do the wipe data/ factory reset im left with a clean build of JB with no apps or anything installed - i just pull these back from titanium 1 by 1 i guess?

For anyone who is interested the factory reset sorted my battery. I am now back to loosing approx 1% per hour overnight on 3g only (weakish signal), wifi off, location services on, google now off, fb, gmail push on. As good as it was before the JB update. I reckon a lot of folks will need to go down this route as its widespread about the JB battery issue. Luckily i was rooted so with titanium restore i got everything the way i wanted in only an hour or 2 - without it you could be tweaking apps for hours i.e. handsent sms!!

Factory Reset of Stock ROM in Safestrap?

I have a question regarding performing a factory reset of the stock ROM using Safestrap. Is this possible or will it mess something up? I am under the mind set that this will delete all my apps and data. Would this also include the SS app and the SuperUser app? If these are deleted will I still have SS Recovery available upon boot and will my phone still be rooted. I ask these question because I am giving this phone to my Mom and what to return it to its factory state so she can set it up for her. Any help would be awesome.

Wanna share the answer with me? I accidentally did that and now it starts booting, but gets stuck in the red Motorola logo. Ugh

I actually removed Safestrap before wiping. Can't remember where I found it on Google. Hopefully by now you have fixed it. You could flash it in download mode to a stock razr Rom. Or go into factory recovery and do another factory reset and wipe and see if that fixes it. If not then download will be the only way to recover it.
