At some point in time, probably when the nand was released for HD2 (I had one), we had to use a tool to format our SD card, I think to ext4. Eversince that my SD card was accessible to the HD2 & then the Evo 3D afterwards. Today after I got my Galaxy S III, it is unable to access part of the SD card, although in settings it shows the actual capacity utilized on the SD card.
Is there a way to fix that, considering the SD card stopped being read by the PC after the reformatting to ext4 sometime back ?

What do you mean by 'parts of'. Are there files/folders you cannot access, is something missing, ... ?
The S3 should have no issues in mounting and using EXT4 filesystems since it's internal storage is using the same FS.
Btw there are tools to at least read EXT4 filesystems under Windows (but none I know of to actually use read-write mode, sadly)

I installed ES File Explorer & it only shows the folders that were created by ICS. All my other content is not shown at all. If there is a way I can access the SD on the PC, move all its content then format the SD to FAT32 & move them back. This will solve the problem.

I did not notice the phone has internal SD like my pad, as my Evo 3D did not have. So what I was seeing was its internal SD. When I enabled root view in ES explorer, I was able to see 'ext SDCard'. The other thing is, my SD Card got read on my PC. Maybe cause it is Win 7 now. Earlier, Win XP did not read it.

Just got my E4GLTE and of course the first thing I did was root it, unlock it, and make a nandroid backup. I just moved from a Motorola Photon 4G and on that device the internal memory (pseudo sdcard) is mounted on /mnt/emmc and the external card is on /mnt/sdcard. Assuming you run out of app space in base memory, you can always move most of your app to the SD Card. Since the E4GLTE mounts the external SD Card on /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd, it appears that actual external storage can only be used for media or data where the app (or the system using the Storage tool) has a function to map to a different directory.
Have I described the situation properly? Does anybody else see the limitations this might pose or suggest workarounds?

Yes I see this as a problem as well. I have looked into the vold.fstab file (where the system looks to see how it should mount partitions) but changing them just makes neither partition mount. I have a feeling that it might be something in the kernel but I will keep digging around.
Also if someone does figure it out how do you prefer them to be mounted? Internal as /emmc and external as /sdcard? Internal as /sdcard/int_sd and external as /sdcard? Maybe something else?
I guess it would depend how the apps and the kernel handle it, which of course, would vary with a custom ROM. Early builds of CM9 for the MoPho alternated back and forth, but there is also an option to swap what is internal and external as well. When it wasn't mounting at all, you could edit the vold.fstab, which would be my first inclination, so thanks for saving me that step!
I think, from most implementations I've seen, when a device has internal and external storage its been mounted as /mnt/emmc and /mnt/sdcard. Its like that on most of the custom ROMs I've used (on Nook, OG EVO, Hero, MoPho).

Im really lost on the whole external sd thing. I just want to be able to have my apps on there but android has made it seemingly impossible to do so anymore. Is there a write up or something on how this can be done with todays ICS?

I've been trying to format my 32GB sdcard to a filesystem that can read files over 4GB. Main reason being I use HDMI connection to view 1080p movies on TV.
Anyway, I've tried EXT2, 3, 4, NTFS, exFAT, and all of them come up with the "broken sdcard" message from android when I try to mount the sdcard.
I'm using kernel version 2.6.32.59-MB860-MROM and using the lastest MROM based off CM7. Anyone have any insight on where I can go from here? Thanks.
The whole entire Android system assumes the user storage (internal or external) is formatted as FAT32. This is much harder to change than you think. A simple reformat won't do.
You need to have at least part of your SD card to be FAT32 because many applications are using it to store configuration and data. You can have two partitions on your SD card, but I am not sure if video player will be able to use any partitions other than FAT32.
I found a way to format my external 32GB sdcard to NTFS and still have it mounted on the phone. Pretty easy actually. I'll post it here for those that might be interested:
-Used Paragon Partition Manager 12 on my Windows machine to format my external SD to NTFS

-Paragon was not able to mount my sdcard automatically as it just gave me an error, so what I did with the rom im using was mount manually to /mnt/sdcard-ext. Should be good to go after this.
Been using it for a few days and everything is working well so far. Only annoying thing is everytime I connect by usb to my comp and enable usb storage I have to manually remount once I disconnect.

I have finally partitioned my SD card (16GB) successfully using MiniTool Partition Wizard tool. I created two FAT 32 partions (G=11.75GB DATA and *.=2.87 APPS). I had problems when creating an EXT2 partition...Link2SD wouldn't recognize it or mount the card.
Was able to successfully mount the card after creating 2 FAT32 partitions so I went with that for now. Several questions though...
1) I was unable to actually move to SDcard using "native App2SD method" with an error telling me that App2SD not supported by my device because it has a primary external storage which is emulated from the internal storage. Instead had to link the app in order to move its files to the card. What does this mean and why can't I physically move? Also, what is actually happening when I create links?
2) Apps appeared to be on the external card afterward when I went to System/storage and reviewed space usage. I could not, however tell whether they were on the DATA or the APPS partition from File Manager OR after taking the card out and looking at it from my PC. There were a couple of l directories created (LGBackup and LOST.DIR) but all appeared to be empty. WHY?
3) After dismounting and taking the card out to explore on PC and then putting card back in the phone it was remounted automatically however all apps are now taking up space on my internal drive and external storage is completely. Also, all my home screen widget configs are empty with all listed under "APPS" utility. Can anyone explain what's going on and how to correct?

HI: I tried to partition a 32GB card an used EXT4 using the free Minitool Partition wizard. Now my Freelander Tab won't mount my card nor will
Windows-7 Pro allow me to copy my backup data to the card. I tried to re-partition but minitool doesn't recognize the partition. I tried the partition recovery mode but got no where now I have a bricked 32BG SD card. How do I recover my 32GB SD card?? I had no data on it as I backed up all of it to my Computer before I started. HELP PLEASE Dan Mericle Sr

I don't think Windows would recognize a Linux partition...which is what EXT is. That's why u can't move data to that partition at this time. MiniTool doesn't even SEE your EXT partition?? If that's the case how do u know it's an EXT partition in the first place? Perhaps u could post an image of the MiniTool screen? If it CAN see the partition I would delete it and recreate it with at least a portion being FAT32.

jakman: Because when I Partitioned my 32GB SD Card I was reading a XDA thread that said to Partition it using Ext4 as being the best Partition to use. When I look at Minitool it shows the Partitions that says Disk 8 read only ( Capacity 5.00GB for 1st partition and 24.72FGB for 2nd partition, used GB's then under File System Ext4 for both partitions, Type Primary both partitions, Status None. ). When I Hi-Light partition-1 it comes up on the left side with Actions and Wizards. Under Wizards the Choices are Copy Partition Wizard, Copy Disk Wizard, Partition Recovery Wizard. No other Choices the task bar at the top is grayed out. When I Hi-Light one of the other drives it adds a whole bunch of choices like Format Partition - Show Partition Properties and other actions that I can take Etc. I tried Partition Recovery Wizard it just tells me what files that can be recoverd. the Delete Icon is Missing. So there is no way i can delete the partitions and choose FAT 16/32 File System. When I first Partitioned the card Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, Fat 16, & Fat 32 were the File Systems offered. So do you Know of another Partition App that might enable me to Delete the partition and set the File System to Fat 32 thats FREE or doesn't Cost to Much as I'm on a fixed Income. Ive search the Forums but no body seems to have had this problem in the past or they found a solution else where and didn't post there Solution. can you use minitool partition wizard to recovery your 32gb card? You can use the function Recovery Partition to scan card. have you set the partition to primary after change its files system? maybe this is main reason why it cant be recognized.

Has anyone had success using Apps2SD or similar? I have a rooted Z3TC and have been trying to partition and create mount scripts for the microSD card in the app but keep running into an error.
Error:
Mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk1p3 on /data/sdext2 failed: No such device
I have posted on the dev forum but wanted to check if anyone in the device specific forum has speciality knowledge. And devs are often worked off their feets!

2nd partition needed to be formatted as ext4. Still a whole load of other issues to sort through, but I have a working version. (Will never buy a device with this small internal memory again!!!)

I have the App2SDPro app and have not been able to get it to work. Can you explain in more details how you did it? 16GB is always making me delete stuff...but there is no phone that can match this size so I just need to find a way to move apps.

I use App2SD since a while due to the ridiculous amount of memory of this device. I have something around 320 applications installed with games, gps/maps... all locally installed.
I don't use the "Link apps to SD card" option but only the "Folder Mount" one.
I barely move everything on the root of the internal SD to a dedicated folder on my external SD card.
The trick is to find the folder on which App2SD has the write permissions. As there is a several location for both internal and external storage location it can require some try/fail tests...
I'm on LineageOS and I use these links to move all the obb folder to the external SD card:
Source=/storage/emulated/0/Android/obb
Destination=/storage/NNNN-NNNN/DCIM/App2SD_folders/obb, with NNNN-NNNN the internal SD name
I have unchecked all the options as I normally prefer to move them manually with a file explorer to make some cleanup in the same time.
For some reasons there was some limitation to move directly the Android folder, so do the same for the /Android/Data folder.

What I've tried:
I partitioned the sd card using minitool partition wizard. I partitioned it into 100gb fat32/exfat and 20gb ext4 partition. I was able to install apps onto the ext4 partition and read things from the fat partition. However, there was a couple problems. I could never see the ext4 partition, all I saw was the internal storage (32gb) and the sd card fat partition (100gb) so I didn't know anything about the sd card ext4 partition.
Secondly, on reboot the fat partition would not mount. I would have to take out the sd card out and put it back in to get it to work.
Thirdly, even when the fat partition would mount it would not show up in windows mtp. When I plugged the phone into the computer all that I could see was the internal storage, so if I wanted to put anything onto the sd card I would have to take it out and put it into the computer.
I've used this adoptable storage module to enable installing apps on sd card. It "worked" but I face two problems with this: solid explorer only reads the sd card so it says I'm only getting 120gb (not 120gb + 32gb) and secondly it doesn't load magisk modules properly, so vanced youtube or viper4android don't work. Also now I can't get reverse this.
I've been trying for a while now, I would really love some help.

I think that the setting in developer options worked! Easier than partitioning.
