[Q] BroadcomMEMsService crashing - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
After I have upgraded my Galaxy S3 firmware to the latest official firmware upgrade from Samsung and root it, intermittenly I have the pop box saying that BroadcomMEMsService has stopped.
This has happened quite frequently and it become quite annoying because before the message comes out the phone will freeze for a short time.
Anybody has same experience and how to solve it?
Cheers

Factory reset, wipe cache and advanced/dalvik on CWM recovery
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

I have the same problem on a rooted S3.
But I do not see any reasson why this should happen on a stock rom with root permissions. So I do not factory reset it but wiped the caches - no effect.
The problem only appears if mobile data connection is deactivated. I think it should be a problem with some service that needs agps service e.g.
Letting mobile data connection enabled is a solution for the next weeks but not a good option.

I have noted the almost same thing but it happens when the data connection change from G - 3G - H - H+... Btw my data connection is always on... still looking for solution..

So did you try my suggestion or not?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

I would try it but sadly I have not enough time for playing arround with resets and restores without being sure that it helps. Thats why I prefer to know the reason first before I begin...
And there are a view people on the net who commented that only disabling specific apps which are in need of agps (e.g.weather widget) had lead to success...

No problem. Up to you of you really need it fixed. Restores don't take long, that's just a excuse.

Yes - think you are right. But I have a lot of stuff which I changed in /system /data etc. and a lot of scripts that I have to sort and backup before. That takes a view hours/days after work so I think I will try it next week.

Found a temporary solution to avoid the crashing is by turning on the GPS... at least until a new rom comes out...

Hmm I see 2 possible couses in my SGS III:
1) Full Keyboard - the error first appeared when I started this app
2) It might be hosts file since I installed Debian kit and using Debian on this phone..
I will try create hosts file and let you know..
UPDATE: /etc/hosts is existing so this is not the couse. I will delete Full Keyboard and let you know.

I did what you say but the problem still occur....
i try to hard reset everything still can't find solution

Afaik the satellite navigation (which on the S3 is GPS + Glonass) is controlled by the modem.
You might want try to flash another modem, maybe it fixes the issue.
Which ROM and version are you on?
Any chance of a LogCat at the time of it crashing?

CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4
Using Odin to flash
Can u gv me the link to flash another modem?
Thx for ur help

no problems on mine but try reflashing the rom

I am having the same issue... i get this ramdomly no matter whats on , gps, wifi, 3g or even when all of them on at same time

Flash new firm.or custom rom and the problem will be solved.Confirmed

[Q] "Wi-Fi sharing" and Wi-Fi sharing manager"? Not needed for normal WiFi usage?

[Q] "Wi-Fi sharing" and Wi-Fi sharing manager"? Not needed for normal WiFi usage?
I find these 2 "Wi-Fi sharring" things running usually.
Sometimes they even rank quite highly in battery usage.
But I only use WiFi as a normal client for internet access, never for tethering, so I can stop those "WiFi sharing" processes?
Did Samsung/Android unintentionally mix up the naming of processes?
Has any one else ever seen "Wi-Fi sharing" rank highly in battery usage, even though he/she only uses WiFi for the phone's own internet access?
I have this exact same problem with the Wi-Fi sharing running in the background & draining my battery completely!! Still haven't switched over completely to this phone yet because of this & really hoping I can find a fix for it.
I've seen this mentioned in other threads but most of them talk about rooting the phone to achieve the solution.
Is there any other option for stock users? I can't believe Samsung would expect everyone to do that!!!
It's driving me insane. The battery is completely dead by the mid day! Thankfully I haven't completely switched over from my trusty Desire HD just yet. But am aching to use the SGS2 if there's an easy fix for this.
Anyone have a solution that doesn't involve rooting the phone?
Big thanks in adavance and apologies if this has been discussed already but all the threads I found only involved rooting.
Cheers,
AndroidFreud.

What exactly did you remove & how?
Also does this remove any other functionality that you may need later on?

Wifi sharing comes up once every time I stop charging it. (takes 30 min before it starts) I kill it once and it does not reactivate until I next charge the phone.

you can remove it using titanium backup.
these 2 have no effect on the rest of the regular wifi functionality.its for connecting to the pc through WIFI.
they will appear as long as the WIFI is on
you can use titanium back up to back it up and remove them. in case you will need it you can restore it.so theres no harm. try it.
hope that i helped with it
hi, just to check. Does installing titatium backup means i've to root my phone?

So there's no way of fixing this on a stock Rom unless I go for root!?!?!
Possible with My Backup Pro?

I tried checking to see if there were any software updates for the first time and after.signing up all it's saying is connection failed!

Flashing my firmware to KF3 fixed this for me.
Previously I was on KE7, and had this problem.
I flashed KG1 and this is not an issue at all anymore either. If you don't feel like flashing, you can use Titanium and freeze both the sharing and sharing manager with no side effects from what I can tell. I am assuming wi-fi sharing would be convenient if you could share between two mobile devices using wi-fi but not if its a bug as it was in earlier firmware builds.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze those 2 apps. Very glad to hear that the KG1 does not have this issue anymore.

I did the same too.
Apologies, I'm a noob to this. I understood using titanium backup would mean you would have to have root. Is this not correct?
I've only recently got this phone & am on the stock rom. I'd prefer not to root a it would void my warranty.
Is flashing any different? I also have a desire hd & haven't had to deal with any of that. How would I go about it?
Sorry again for all the noob questions. Any help at all would be appreciated.

Well, you might lose the warranty if you are not using a tiny jig . The point is that you can flash custom roms / kernels, etc as much as you want, and if you brick you phone, just insert the jig and everything goes back to normal. But you will have to flash the stock rom / kernel though. But if you want root (more acces to your device) you can do it without changing f/w or anything else. Is good to have root especially for titanium backup imo. With paid version of this app you can even freeze things you don't use everyday or anything else (e.g. wifi sharing).
(sorry for the bad english, but I hope I was helpful)
Thanks for the quick reply.
What's a 'tiny jig'? And do you have any link on how to go about flashing? Will also do a quick search on this. Thanks again.
I'm just finding it incredible that Samsung would expect their users to go this route instead of via an update?! Arent any other users experiencing this?
I tried updating through About Phone> Software updates> but it always says connecting and then connection failed so have not been able to see if that works.
Thanks again for all the help.
UPDATE: Ok did a little searching and came across this which answers most my noob questions. Going to try it out.

Ok so that method earlier mentioned apparently will void the warranty so I'm back to square one again.
So has anyone out there been able to fix this on a stock rom? Anyone who got an official update from samsung that actually fixes it?
Everyday I return home to a completely battery drained phone. Not sure how good this is for the battery life. desperately need help here!

GPS problems

Hi was wondering if anyone has similar problems to me with the GPS not getting a fix. Most of the time it functions fine with Google navigation but there are times like tonight when it cannot get a fix. I downloaded the GPS status app from the market which showed only a couple of satellites where visable and it would lock on to any of them. I then went in to the tools part of the app and reset something called a-gps data (whatever that is?) Then I clicked the download link and it received some data. After that the GPS got an instant lock and has been fine since.
I just wondered if anyone else experiences these problems and if so how do you fix it. My nexus s never had a problem getting a fix I'm just curious as to why I'm having problems with this handset
Edit to say I updated to the latest maps yesterday so I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

helped a lot of us out. agps is assisted gps iirc. instead of doing calculations itself, your phone downloads data instead (i think).
Thanks ill have a look at that thread. Seems to be working well for the time being but for how long I'm not sure

makes a world of difference. get a lock within 5 secs normally as opposed to upto 5 minutes!
just remember, if you flash a new rom, the conf file gets replaced. i was convinced that the rom i was on was causing poor gps until i replaced it with a backup off my sd card
So does this require root tommo? I haven't had chance to go through the whole thread yet as I'm not at my computer. I'm not rooted so would have to go through that procedure too
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
yeah, you need an app like root explorer to get access to the "etc" folder where the gps.conf file is.
very easy to do mind.
Thanks buddy ill give it a try once I get home

Is My Atrix SLOWLY Bricking??

about a month ago this happend to me:
out of the blue everything on my phone started FC repeatedly (whatsapp, camera, Luancher Pro, phone, etc..) so pulled out the battery and it then it didnt want to boot up so i tried a fresh install from recovery but.. recovery was crashing as well and i had to pull out the battery every time. finally afer playing a speed game with the phone i got to re install (i wiped user chache/data /dalvik ) and the problem was gone ...
these recent days some apps started FC on me but i thought i was somewhat common .. mainly Mi file explorer .. so right now my phone started to do the same thing again.. FC everything! The main one crashing is = the process com.android.phone stopped unexpectedly. i have no signal now and cant open anything.. if i pull out battery I know it wont boot up and may not let me use recovery without a hassle!
i dont know if this has to do with but when i install a rom ( i had topsmarts 1.3) i use root uninstaller to uninstall lots things i dont want like: weather and news, terminal emulater, dev tools, es explorer..
what is can be causing this problem and what can i do to fix it??? it looks like i wont be using it today because its as good as a brick right now.
edit before OP: i selected reboot and as expected its looping at the Unlocked screen:crying:
Try re-flashing it anyway... if there's a recovery problem again let us know

It's not a living thing or a machine with mechanics that suddenly doesn't work because of a misconception. If it was a misconception it would not work at all. If you solved it by reflashing, then it's a software issue and it won't happen again if your CWM image is not broken. But just to make sure I would reflash CWM to make sure it doesn't cause any trouble.
and be careful with removing system apps
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
I believe it was you removing system apps which caused your problems. You should always freeze system apps instead of uninstalling/removing them. That way if your phone starts to act up you can thaw/unfreeze them until you figure out which one is causing the issue.

Exactly. Removing system apps can result in accidental removal of base code and intrinsic system processes that are required for your ROM to function properly. These apps can probably be disabled and hidden instead of removing them altogether.

voice dailer

You really have to freeze apps one by one if you are unsure of what you are doing. On stock Blur build for example, Yahoo Authenticator can cause FC issues with your contacts if you freeze or delete it. You wouldn't think this would affect your contacts, but it does.

"Super Clean Wipe" or something like that

Hi people.....w/o long disortation...
Isnt somewhere out there a super clean wipe... (not odin) that some devs suggest that we use b4 flashing. ..just to get a clean slate....
I believe I need that...bc I am using a rom ported from an international rom...and gps is speculative. I basically dont have gps lock (it locks and then somehow it looses its lock..and through some marvelous people helping we think I am not getting a complete wipe...via twrp... (tried everything)...so thats why I am asking for this "super clean wipe" or something like that. ..
I know there was one for the Verizon Gnex

Use FasterGPS to change the gps.conf back to the US. It is fairly straightforward to use, just give it root privileges then:
1. Under continent select North America
2. Once you select continent the Region box will become selectable, you need to choose United States.
It will show a toast message that says the GPS.conf was written successfully, then you just need to load Maps up and it should lock on quickly without losing the signal.
If that doesn't work just post back and I will give you something else to try because AFAIK the Super, Mega, and whatever the hell wipes aren't recommended for this phone and if I am remembering correctly they caused soft bricking on our phones that was a ***** to fix. While this wipes have most likely been fixed I wouldn't bother with them, if you want to do a wipe because what I told you to do doesn't work then you just need to boot into TWRP, click wipe, click the box on the right side (I think its format data or something but I can't remember off the top of my head), type yes, click go and then reflash whatever you want. At least try FasterGPS first, that works most of the time on International Roms.

With this fix you don't have to push anything at all, just boot into recovery and flash it like you would a ROM. Don't bother wiping anything with this fix, just flash it.
http://db.tt/9E3aMJxS
Also pushing files isn't that bad when you use something like Root Explorer, all you have to do is copy and paste it to wherever it needs to be. If you have to fix the permissions after pushing it you just have to long press and change them, it will load a little box with all the permissions and all you have to do is check the ones needed.

What the hell? There was a report of that in the thread in General but I figured it was bogus because the person would never ever reply and every single ROM I have tried it on, TW included, it either fixed or did nothing.
When you restore your nandroid does your GPS go back to the normal non working state?
Something else you could try, that i just thought of when replying to someone in the VRB thread, is making a nandroid of a TW ROM, that you got a strong GPS lock for at least 5 minutes, on your internal SD and then try either reflashing Moon or restoring a nandroid of it. I would probably just reflash it to have a clean slate but I would also understand if you didn't want to have to go through setting it up again.
That probably won't work but I know on my S3 I had to have a working backup on my internal or else GPS refused to work at all, on my Note 2 I have to reflash the fix I linked above if I forget and wipe my nandroid before establishing a lock.
Also are you trying to get a GPS lock with or without the Wireless network setting on? I know on AOSP having the WiFi and Mobile network location setting checked in addition to the regular GPS location it would refuse to even turn the GPS on. You had to have the wireless location setting off before you could get your GPS to work, while this isn't AOSP it could be a shared bug and is worth testing out.

For my Thunderbolt there was a file called "SuperWipe" that was essentially a blank file system that you could flash to your phone to quickly clear EVERYTHING.
I have not seen anything like that for the Note II yet.

It was released right after the phone came out. I want to say it was released in the N7105 forums, it could have been AT&T though, and there were some serious issues it was causing in all the Note 2's. It was supposed to have been worked on but I haven't heard anything since then and honestly wouldn't use it after all the corruption issues that arose from it.

That is the way i have always done it, on CleanROM ACE 4.9, Vanilla Rootbox, and all the other miscellaneous TW and AOSP ROMs I've used it on. It is made for AOSP but didn't hurt any of the TW ROMs I've rested it on.
If it completely got rid of your GPS when you tested it before though it may just not be a good idea to use it on Moon.
When you're testing GPS do you always have the WiFi and Mobile Network Location seeing under Location Settings checked? I know on AOSP for a while you couldn't use that setting at all and then on some TW ROMs you had to use it to get your first lock and after that you could get away with not having it enabled.
I would just flash Moon ROM and see if you can get a lock. Try it after creating a nandroid of a TW ROM that has working GPS on your internal storage, on my S3 the only way I could get a lock on any ROM was to keep a nandroid with working GPS on my internal SD card.

Are you using some sort of firewall/adblocker that might act up? What rom are you on?
Maybe strage things in the logcat while not getting the images?
I would suggest doing a full wipe and only install flipboard and see If you have the same problems after some days.
Also, does this problem Also happen on different networks?

I am not using any firewall/adblocker.
I have the stock rom but my phone is rooted.
I did full wipe but i have the same problems.
When this apps are not working, if i try to make a screenshot an error appear " It was found an error on the SDcard". Dropobox and Swype cannot work without an SDCard. Maybe it's a problem with the card, but otherwise, I can use music and video on it even if Dropbox, Flipboard and Swype are not working properly.
The problem persists on different networks.
