I use MediaHouse to browse my network for DLNA sources: NAS & WMC 7. It is much better than Sony stock DLNA player--which is a featureless afterthought/sick joke. MediaHouse then calls up MX Player, and it's codecs handle the same video sources that Sony DLNA refuses to play....

This is about right. Third-party DLNA viewers such as MediaHouse support on-the-fly transcoding and best-attempt playback.
The Sony DLNA doesn't do this is for the same reason that the Sony Video Player won't play locally stored WMV's for example, because they cannot be played back by hardware rendering. The Sony DLNA app only supports the same video files as the stock Sony Video Players, those with hardware support.
Third-party apps bypass this restriction and try their best to play it, even if its not supported, so give that a shot.
Try Dice Player I use this to play Video from all my NAS drives and Network Shares

The problem was that we needed a media app capable of playing photos and music, which MX cannot do..

You can try a video player app like dice player or convert your videos xvid, avi to your tablet s friendly format with Brorsoft Video Converter.
To avoid the incompatible issues, you can convert your kinds of videos to a widely supported format like MPEG-4 first before storing on your NAS for streaming. I've successfully convert a bunch of VOB to NAS before streaming and sharing.

This is a totally pointless post on a thread thats nearly to years old my friend
yes you are trying to help a fellow xda peep
But you should read the whole thread its only two pages long but as you would have seen the player your suggesting as been already offered and rebuked By the op as for the conversion option its a lot of work and time to convert what I can only assume is about a 1 Tb if not more on a nas hence the need to have a nas
Please read all of the tread you are commenting on first
His best option would be ez file explorer to veiw the folders on the nas then selecting the appropriate app with the file being veiwed
As for video players vlc or mx player support a good number of formats
hit thanks if I helped
sent from rooted xts thanks djrbliss and condi
Try with Avia Media Player

[Q] Is it possible to play a DVD off my laptop on my tablet without ripping?

Is it possible to play a DVD off my laptop on my tablet without ripping?
I’ve been trying to stream a DVD from my laptop to my Asus transformer tablet (running ICS 4.0.3), but so far couldn't find a way. I tried VLC for Windows + VLC Stream & Convert for Android combination, but there is no option to directly play a DVD, selecting individual VOB files wont work.
The only way I could manage to get the DVD video to play was to stream disk content though VLC's stream option, but this doesn’t allow any control over playback (Pause, FF, Rev etc..). I also tried setting up a DLNA server with Windows media player, but again there is no option to play a DVD , it can only share video files available on the local hard disk.
Now I'm beginning to think what I'm trying to do is not possible. Does anyone know how to do it ?
Looks like its not possible ??
For now I’m using splashtop HD remote desktop app, frame rate is not always good, but most movies are watchable, guess I'll have to use that till something better comes along.
is that a MPEG-PS VOB File ? then u can play the individual file by MX Player..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en
btw u can extract the movies from a dvd using the img file.. sometimes there are 2 movies in 1 vob file
if you still can not play it then send me a sample of the vob
regards

[Q] Video playback problem?

Hi everyone,
I have Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE GT-I9305 and running 4.1.1. I am having problem in watching AVI videos on phone. S3 plays some AVI videos and some don’t play and for some just play audio but not video. I have tried YXPlayer2, VPlayer video player, MX Player, MOBO Video Player and few more but its same.
Now I know what u r thinking. Change the video format to play on your phone. Yes I have used Total video converter and Bigasoft total video coverter on my laptop to change video format to play on S3 but the AVI file that phone does not play, it will never play whatever file format I change like mp4 or somefing.
Looks like this is another drawback of Android.
Any suggestion or help please?

Ok. I have even changed the AVI files into mp4 format and iphone does play them. If they are corrupt files then iphone would not play them.
Finally I have found the solution to play all AVI files in Samsung Galaxy S3 phone. I am posting here so it might help others too.
If you copy the AVI files direct into yr phone or memory card then phone will not play, no matter whatever video player you use.
Solution:
Install Samsung Kies and connect yr phone. Make sure you install My FREE CODEC too when it ask to install.
click your phone in Left menu in Kies and you will see full info in main window.
Click Import/Export tab on top.
In main window u will see two options (Import from PC) and (Export to PC)
Click on Import from PC and select Video and select import files or folder.
After successfuly import click video in left menu and play the video in kies.
When you play video in kies, it add the codec and you will be able to play video in S3 too.
I hope this info will help those who might get problem in playing any video in s3.

Galaxy Tab S3 playing some mp4 files but not other mp4 files?

I have recently purchased a brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 SM-T820. It is running the stock android 8.0.0 ROM and I have not rooted or done anything else to it. It is as it came.
I also have a Samsung EVO+ 64Gb MicroSD card installed in the tablet and have some movies saved on the MicroSD card.
I am totally confused because the tablet will play some mp4 videos but will not play other mp4 videos and this is so even if the videos are on the MicroSD card or copied to the internal storage of the tablet.
I have tried playing the videos with VLC Player, MX Player and the inbuilt Video player with the same result.
When I try to play some mp4 files with VLC Player they play normally but when I try to play other mp4 files the screen remains black and nothing happens
When I try to play some mp4 files with MX Player they play normally but when I try to play other mp4 files it gives the message "Can't play this file"
The inbuilt video player gives the error message "Failed to play video. An unknown error has occurred"
Surely it should play ALL mp4 files or NO mp4 files?
I would appreciate any thoughts/help/comments.
Thanks
