[Q] Help with sunk Razr - Motorola Droid RAZR

To my surprise the other day I got my phone to turn back on after dropping it in the hot tub while it was on, almost. After pulling off the back half and thoroughly drying it out the phone powered back on everything else works except the home back and search keys the ones that light up at the bottom. But they do work sometimes, most of the time actually. When the keys are working, every once in awhile the menu will keep flashing up on screen and when i hold the menu key it stops.
I re flashed the ROM thinking it may have developed a glitch being wet, nothing.
I tried drying it out more, nothing.
I'm not sure how the keys work but if i completely remove the front glass and clean the inside of it would that do anything? When it dried out the water did leave a slight film. It almost seems like there is a bad connection somewhere.
Thoughts?

should of left power off and in rice for 24-48 hours + befor turning it back on but it may help im not to sure havent taken the glass off my phone yet
let me know what happens

Might not want to hear it, but if you have insurance, NOT warranty, you should go ahead and get it replaced. Water logged phones never work the same, and usually don't last much longer when you do get it running again.
Thus device is still new enough that you should be able to get a replacement brand new out of the box from the insurance company.

[Q] Is it time to sell atrix for parts?

Hello everyone. Before I sell my Atrix on eBay as a broken phone for parts, I thought I would make see if anyone can think of anything I might have missed. I have an unlocked Atrix, using CM7, flashed to CM9, then back down to CM7 until the bugs get worked out. My wife dropped my phone, which caused some problems that have now bricked it.
Specifically...
When she first dropped the phone, I picked it up, turned it on, and immediately noticed that the headphone icon was on, even though no headphones were inserted into the jack. This effectively killed any sound on the device. I rebooted a few times, and occasionally the icon would go off and bring back sound. Then, it would go back.
I noticed that if I sort of twisted the Atrix (held it in my left hand, gripped the top of the phone with my thumb at the top right and my forefinger on the top left and squeezed), I could make the icon go off. It might come back on, but I could squeeze it and make it go away.
A few days of this went by, when I noticed that the headphone icon was staying off. However, when I went to actually insert headphones, they wouldn't register. However, it was at this time that I realized that the volume rocker was dead and unresponsive.
In retrospect, this is probably where I should have realized that I should leave well enough alone and limp along with my crippled, but 80% functioning Atrix until my next upgrade. However, I soon found out about the CM9 betas coming out, and quickly downloaded ROMs to flash. Flashing turned out to be tricky, as the only way I could get into recovery was by shutting down the phone with the command to go into recovery. Holding VOLUME + and power do nothing because the rocker is broken. Similarly, I cannot get into fastboot (presumably because of the broken rocker).
The first thing I noticed with the ICS build that I flashed was that the camera wasn't working. I first assumed that this was a software glitch, except that the camera seemed to be working since the first of February. I then flashed down to CM7. However, the camera still didn't work. It then dawned on me that I had not tried to use the camera since the drop. I then guessed that I just now noticed that my crippled phone is down to about 50% functionality.
So, last night I decide to flash up to a new CM9 beta. Not sure why. Guess it was boredom. The flash, however, didn't take, as my phone now is stuck on the boot screen. Ordinarily, I'd boot into recovery, wipe, and re-flash. Except with the broken rocker, I can't get into recovery without first booting into Android and then re-booting into recovery. So...it is effectively a brick now.
I decided to take it apart using iFixit's guide, but I didn't see any obvious damage. However, I'm guessing that there is some crack on the motherboard from the drop that is not discernible to my untrained eye. The fact that the camera and sound use the same ribbon cable is what is leading me to this conclusion.
So, now that you have the full story, what's the verdict? I'm guessing I need to sell it on eBay as a broken phone for parts. Someone can make good use of the housing, digitizer, and glass. I was thinking of starting at $75, but taking the first offer in the $50 range. Is it time to sell it for parts, or am I missing something?
I don't know how to fix it (I'm sure there's a way!), but if somebody doesn't find the answer soon, PM me about it. I would totally buy the battery if you're willing to part with that.
I ordered a camera/volume rocker module and am waiting for it to arrive. Not sure if this will fix it or now, as I don't know if the motherboard is intact. I figured that it was worth $15 for the part.
I'm actually using an extended battery I bought from Amazon. I'm always looking to make money, but I think for karma's sake, I should advise you to look there for some stock and generic batteries. I found a really good deal on an extended battery that came with a battery door. So, my stock battery and door have been sitting in a desk drawer for weeks.
FIXED
OK, not that anyone seems to care, but in case anyone is Googling with similar problems, I'll go ahead and post a reply. For $15, I was able to buy a camera module. The camera is attached to the volume rocker, so I took the Atrix apart, put the new unit it, and VOILA!!!
The phone seemed to hang on the red Moto logo...but with a working volume rocker, I was able to get into FASTBOOT, wipe the recovery, flash a new recovery, then boot into new recovery, wipe, and flash!!! Back in business!
I'm going to start a new thread as I think this is a new problem, but now the phone has a SOD when I talk on the phone. Battery pull and reboot works, but so doe simply plugging it in to a power source...I have to believe this is a software issue...

[Q] My mom dropped her Photon in a bucket of soapy water months ago...

Like 6 -7 months ago,
Okay, so my mom dropped her Photon in a bucket of soapy water while she was trying to wash her car. She immediately took out the battery and tried to get most of the water out. She also put it under a fan to dry out for about 3-4 hours... then she plugged it in to charge! 0_0 (I wasn't there to tell her not to plug it in yet...) Few minutes after, I came home from school and she told me. I immediately rushed upstairs and unhooked it from the charger, and took out the battery. We put it in rice and left in there for some days. Finally I had the courage to plug it in. When I did, NOTHING. My mom mentioned something about it saying RSD protocol or something. At that point, I lost all hope and stashed it in the dead phone pile.
9/15/2012
I plugged the phone in, the green LED lit. I feel a vibrate, the 4 capacative buttons light. I hit the volume toggles; I hear the Android ding! Vibrate and LED also works! But guess what? The screen is just black... When you plug the Photon into the computer, you hear the notification sound on the Photon, and Windows detects it as:

Motorola MB855 USB Device

Even when booting up, you don't see the red Moto logo, it's like the LCD is dead. I even think the touchscreen functionality is dead too. I really believe now that I can bring this baby back to life somehow. Guys, what can I possibly do?
Maybe try replacing the LCD and digitizer. There should be parts for it on amazon. Its a pain to replace it though. Lastly, make sure that that the motherboard doesn't have signs of corrosion. Otherwise, you'll start to notice the phones performance degrade over time and eventually give out

That's so funny.. I can't imagine a mother talking about RSD.
I'm sure you can find spare parts on Amazon or eBay, but you can always send it to Motorola and pay for fixing it.
If you decide to fix it by yourself, be careful. After I opened my Photon I couldn't use the power button, and I wasted hours on trying to fix it.
I had a similar issue a week ago, my phone was knocked off a table into my pool. I jumped in after it, clothes and all, and picked it up off the bottom.
I immediately threw it out of the pool, yeah, threw, jumped out and did a battery pull. I let is sit in rice for a few days, opened it up, and scrubbed the contacts on the mobo with a firm toothbrush and 90% isopropyl. It's been a week to the day, and everything is running fine except the proximity sensor. So the only issues I'm having now is when I am in a call, the LCD shuts off, and obviously the screen goes non-responsive.
The proximity sensor is constantly reading that something is close.
Not to derail the thread, but any suggestions on that?
To un-derail the thread, there are only 8 torx head screws holding the phone together, took me only about 20 mins or so to open my mopho to the mobo. if you thing it's worth it, take a look and see what you can see on yours.
use hair dryer
whenever my phones got in contact with water, I used a hair dryer to dry the phones. it worked all the time.

Ah, but here's the thing, It has been dry for a week now.
I consider the phone saved, and everything is working just as it did before it went swimming, save for the proximity sensor.
water damage repair
Ok i repair cell phones all day and for water damage you need to remove the motherboard and soak it in alcohol for 20 minutes then take a tooth brush and scrub the whole board to remove all the corrosion and do the same to the lcd and digitizer connections its a 50/50 shot
No help on a workaround for my busted proximity sensor? I can't use the keypad when making calls.

Evo 4G LTE Stopped working

Launch Evo 4G LTE
NOT rooted
I had been putting off doing the OTA's with plans to root, the phone was running 1.22...6
Series of Vibrations, then phone wouldn't wake up. When holding the Power+Volume down for a few seconds the keypad lights begin to flash. When holding Power+Volume up same thing happens. If I just hold the power button the lights flash, then stop. Upon pressing the power button again the phone vibrates (like it is turning on).
When using the power button to wake the phone the keypad lights come on, but no screen.
Randomly the phone will play loud noises, like the noise that happens when you turn it on.
Ideas?
Screen backlight quit maybe?

Just spontaneously? The phone was in my pocket, vibrated a few times, then wouldn't turn on.
Maybe? I had this happen once, but my phone wouldn't come back to life. I had to plug it in then wait for it to charge. I left it on the charger for about half an hour. Then it booted up ok after that.
When mine did it, all I would get were the three buttons on the bottom flashing nothing else. No sounds or vibrations.
Try that and see if it helps. If not, a visit to Sprint maybe needed. Good luck.

I have came to the conclusion that the screen has stopped working. The phone rings, and I can answer a call if I get lucky and slide my finger where the answer button should be.
Guess it's a trip to Sprint tomorrow.
Sounds like the backlight. The digitizer seems to still be working.
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app
Went to Sprint, paid them $35 to open it up, see a little corrosion from "water damage", and refuse to replace anything because of the damage. I don't have insurance.
Not sure if it's worth trying to replace the screen myself?
The phone isn't even 6 months old. Could I talk to HTC and see if they will replace it?
Edit: I talked to HTC. They are supposed to email me a packing slip to send it to them for repair.
Base charge of $40 for them to look at it.
Do you think it's worth a try, or do you think they will see the corrosion and say the same thing Sprint said? So much bull that the phone isn't even 6 months old and the screen failed. I wouldn't even be mad if they actually had good customer service.
Side note: Is there a way to turn this phone off? I can reboot it, but I can't figure out a way to actually turn it off. I want to turn it off so I'll have a chance of getting some of my messages when I get a working phone.
Just hold the power button until it turns off.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Holding the power button causes a reset, holding the power button+volume down is a hard reset, both ways the phone reboots immediately after.
Took the phone to another Sprint store last night, same thing, but they actually explained it this time. There's a small area of corrosion on the main board basically under the headphone jack, this corrosion slowly spreads and shuts down parts of the phone. So basically there's a good chance the LCD is fine, the board just needs replaced.
This morning my alarms kept going off, after about 5 or 6 times I looked at my phone and the screen was on! Somehow and for some reason the screen is working again.
I suspect that the corrosion is causing a bad connection on the board. I plan to tear into the phone later today and see if I can clean it up a little bit.
Any points on cleaning corrosion off the board?
was the phone near water or something?? how does it get corrosion like that?? just wondering casue if i ever have to bring my phone to sprint and they say they wont fix it cause it has water corrosion and i never dropped water on it ill be heated!!

I would assume sweat or steam from being in a bathroom while the shower is on. Either way its tough to say.
Sent from my Genesis that does what Nintendon't
Well that sucks. There has been many times on a hot summer day that when I get off a call that I have to wipe down my screen because I've sweat all over it. I would have assumed that the engineers would have designed it better than this. What happens on a rainy day and some rain gets in the phone thru the headphone jack? I guess the phone is toast after this? That's a sh*tty design
Sent from my EVO LTE using xda app
I attempted to take it apart and clean it up,but it's very hard to tell where the corrosion is. I believe my motherboard is toast. I I were to purchase a used motherboard off Ebay, would the ESN of the phone change?
And a little history of the phone - It was never dropped in water in any way, never taken to the bathroom when I was showering. The only times it had moisture on it would be from sweat while in my pocket or when using it in a small drizzle with a few rain drops accumulating on the screen. The place where it appears the corrosion started was at the headphone jack, so I would say to keep that as clean as possible.
Guess it's time to move on. Any news on when the next Evo is coming/name of it?

[Q] Unresponsive screen

Hi all,
Looking for a bit of advice as to whether there is any hope left for my poor S3.
Back in November I dropped it down the toilet (don't ask!). Although I was able to scoop it back out of the water, the damage was clearly done. I stupidly turned the phone back on pretty much immediately and the screen flickered and went dead. The phone seemed to be a goner.
Since then, I completely dismantled the phone and battery and placed them in a bag of rice in my airing cupboard at home. I've left it there for the past 5 months and now, when I take it out of the rice and put it all back together, then phone boots up (I managed to flash a official firmware image back from a slimrom I had on there successfully) and loads perfectly into android. I can then use the phone absolutely fine, open apps, play music, take photographs, for around 30-40 secs until the screen just stops responding completely! It is soooo frustrating. Once this happens, it can take some time to get the phone to reboot in the same way and allow me to use the screen, often booting up and being completely unresponsive.
When the screen stops responding, all the hardware buttons continue to function as expected and both of the buttons (back and menu, I think) either side of the home button continue to respond by giving haptic feedback and sounds.
This has been the case with the phone now for the past couple of months. Each time I try it, I just get frustrated and pull it apart again and put it back into the bag of rice in the cupboard. I have been reluctant to get rid of the phone (won't get much money for it as it is water damaged) in the hope that it will miraculously start working properly again. This doesn't look like it is going to happen and I am now thinking of getting rid of the phone for what little money I can get for it. It is in mint condition minus the screen not responding - I had only had it for 3 months when I dropped it!!
My question then is; is there anything else I can do or try to get the screen to continue responding for more than 30 secs after I reboot it? It just strikes me as odd (and incredibly annoying!) that the screen is obviously capable of working for a set duration but then consistently stops responding after a consistent amount of time. If it can work for 30 secs, why can't it continue to work!? Any ideas as to what might be causing it to lock up?
I'd be really grateful to hear any ideas or suggestions.
Thanks.
No, there is no miracle fix for water damage. Almost certainly the corrosion has caused an increase in resistance, hence why it works for a few seconds until it overheats. As the voltages are tiny even a slight change will break the screen.

I thought as much.
Oh well it was worth asking.
Thanks for at least clearing up why it is probably working for a short time.

[Q] Dropped my LG Optimus G in water

Hey, so I got an LG Optimus G off of Ebay the other day and I love it. It only lasted a few days, though. Went to the beach and set it down on the sand to pose for a picture and a wave ran up over it. I had a case on and it didn't seem like too much water got into it. I immediately shut it off.
I know I should have waited longer, but since it didn't look like too much water had gotten into it I tried to turn it on the next morning. I also plugged a charger into it, which I now realize could have been its downfall.
Anyways, it's been a couple days since then and I dunked it in rubbing alcohol to try to remove residue and then took it apart and let it sit under a fan for over 12 hours. I tried turning it on several times and nothing happened. So, after taking it apart more and blowing out the insides with one of those cans of air for removing dust, I put it back together. This time, when I pushed the power button the back button led came on. It goes off after a little while and I can't get it to do anything else. Also, the water damage indicator is still white.
So, I realize it is probably beyond saving, but the back button led coming on gave me hope that there might still be something to do. Any suggestions on anything else to try and any ideas on why the back button led is coming on?
Thanks!
Okay, here's another question. Would I be able to buy another phone off of Ebay that has a broken screen or something for cheap and transfer over the internal parts to my phone? Or is my screen probably messed up too?
salt can do more damage than you think , usually the screen would remain good if it was normal water , but dicey to say since it was salt water, if you can get it evaluated cheap it would make sense , not otherwise , its already an old phone going cheap, would make more sense to get another.
Any time your phone drops in water, the first thing you should never do is try to turn it on because it could damage the internals and cause a short circuit in which the electrical components may fry.
First dry your phone as much possible and put it in a bowl or bag of rice. Wait at least a few days and then try to turn it on. If it works, great! If not then it is possibly damaged but to the point not every component is damaged. It might just be the screen or the motherboard. The best bet would then be to ask a repair person to see what is broken and if it can be repaired or salvaged for some parts.
