[SOLVED] [Q] Virgin Mobile (Canada) LTE reception problems - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Bought my GS3 on the 27th but I can't get an LTE connection on it. I'm in Waterloo and definitely covered according to their map but I haven't seen LTE once. I went to the kiosk where I bought it and the rep eventually made a phone call. The person at the other end said HSPA+ is a subset of LTE and gets equivalent speeds. I know it is not but there was no point in arguing with him any further. I was then told I would see LTE in Toronto. I was downtown Toronto this weekend and never once saw it there either. I have an LTE sim and the device is completely stock and not rooted. Under "settings" -> "about device" -> "status" I see HSPA:11. I have tried to force it into LTE by typing *#2263# in the dailer and selecting "LTE" -> "LTE all" but it just says "unknown:0" as the network type.
Virgin is a subsidiary of Bell which shares its network with Telus. Their webpage says you only need an LTE sim and any of their data plans. They don't mention the need for an LTE specific plan. Is anyone with a GS3 on Virgin (or Bell/Telus) getting LTE in southern Ontario? What does it show as the network type?
EDIT: Spent an hour on the phone with some clown at Virgin who tried to give me a host of excuses, bad area code, wrong plan, tried to get me on a contract etc. Right after I was about to quit he told me he had just learned that talk and text plans would be LTE compatible on the 5th. Not exactly the best run operation but I'm not sure any Canadian carrier qualifies as one.

I'm on telus and I get LTE in my covered regions... mostly... no complaints though cause with there new Sim, my hspa+ gets somewhere around 10/7 mbs
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk 2

I had to fight with the service rep for another hour last night before a tech finally enabled LTE on my plan. She kept trying to tell me Virgin doesn't have LTE plans. Costs must be really low for them since they clearly don't train anyone for anything. Anyway working now. 30Mbs down, 12Mbs up.

[Q] On AT&T - How to ensure it's using HSPA+ and HSDPA/3G

I assume that I'll need to call AT&T and give them the IMEI number of the GSII -- do I need to request anything special so that they provision the phone on their "4G" (HSPA+) network?
Do I need to tell them what model of phone it is?
I had an Inspire 4G in the past, but returned it in favor of buying this phone outright and avoid reupping my contract for a 'meh' phone in comparison -- I'm still grandfathered into the Unlimited data plan, and in the past when I had the Inspire 4G I was on their Unlimited 4G plan -- I guess do I just ask for the same?
Would it be easier to just take the new phone into the store -- I'm terrified of them molesting this new beauty.
Just trying to think ahead and be prepared for when this beast arrives (hopefully?) next week!
The area I live in does indeed have HSPA+ service.
Dont call atnt, ever. You dont need to in order to enable 3g. If your phone shows 3g (searches) and then switches over to 2g right off the bat in an area where you know you get 3g then you can figure you are on the euro bands. Unlikely but go into settings/wireless and see if you can toggle. Most likely you will need to root and then go to the hidden menu for the bands. Instructions for both can be found here in a search. Unless of course its working. lol If you see it staying on 3g run speed test if you dont mind. Regards report back, lots of folks want to have an answer with this one.

Gotcha. I've read lots of shenanigans that your IMEI has to be provisioned on their network for it to access HSPA+ -- I've also heard that you need a LTE capable SIM card to get on the HSPA+ network - which makes no sense, since HSPA+ is basically enhanced 3G.
You don't have to do anything, just pop in your sim card and go.
Do we have confirmation anyone using a galaxy ds2784 with att 3g yet?

3G connectivity AT&T on Samsung Galaxy S2

Hello Folks,
Just bought myself a samsung galaxy S2 and swapped my AT&T SIM into the new phone. The phone seems to be working just fine but there is no internet connectivity through the 3G network. It doesn't even show that there is a 3G connection. I've tried to go into the settings and have played around but to no avail. Could someone please help or point me in the right direction? Would be a shame to spend 600$ for a phone that only works for voice calling and wifi.
Much appreciated
Harry
I'm having the same problem. Signed up for AT&T since the international version doesn't work with Simple Mobile, have a 2GB dataplan for smart phones and 400 minutes. A friends AT&T sim with an unlimited data plan works fine no problem. Went to the AT&T store and had them test the phone with one of their sim's and it worked... Have to go back to the store on Monday and try and get someone further up the chain to take a look at this.
If you have the Inter model, you will need a 4G data plan... apparently you can swap it. Make sure they set you up in their system under the 4G plan, the price remains the same.
Edit: Have them check your SIM card also, to be safe is compatible with the 4G network.
At Bell, it costs $5 to replace your SIM card. My old SIM worked out of the box with the new phone.
and verify your apn settings. They will vary depending what data plan you are on.
The APN settings are set as the default. WAP.cingular APN gets an unhighlited H+ for a second then it drops to 3G with no connection up or down then it drops off. I'm going to use the ADB log to get more info.
Raised a case with AT&T after verifying everything twice, the latest they'll get back to me is Wednesday.
Ok, so finally got Data working. The AT&T representative, when I first signed up in store, didn't put an IMEI of an AT&T phone in the system so regardless of whether or not I had the correct smart phone data plan, the system wouldn't allow me to properly connect to the data network. So after fussing about the SIM card at the store, the AT&T rep put in an IMEI of an AT&T 4G phone in and then it connected.
Although now that i've found out that H2O wireless has an unlimited $60 plan and is an MVNO that piggy backs on AT&T, i'm tempted to sign up with them. I just need to find out if they support HSPA+ and conditional call forwarding.
I as well has the problem with my S2 not getting a data connection. I did everything that I could think of, but just wasn't getting any connection.
My wife has a Atrix (motorola) and she has the HSPA+ and 3g, so I swapped the SIMs and then my phone was getting the same connection speeds.
I went to the AT&T store and they did give me a new sim (one that said is used for the 4g) , but still nothing.. I told the rep at the counter about me swapping my wife' sim and that happened and she looked at her phone, noticed some setting and basically did a copy and paste and now I got the same speeds.
So, if anyone has any light to shed on what might have been updated.. I sure would like to know.. just in case our account gets changed or updated...
I don't recommend the new unl H2O data plan b/c I had a bad experience with them, their data speed its just too slow. Its like the lowest 3G speed of like 180kbps down and lime 86kbps up.
Using at&t non-smartphone plan I get like 7.5Mbps down and 2Mbps up for $10/mo. (big, big difference), AT&T is the way to go on the GSII.

A little off subject, will the S2 get 4G? I get the HSPA+ , but the AT&T rep said that it would not get the AT&T 4g
hey guys,
i have this exact problem. I am on a family plan and my phone number has an unlimited $15/mo data plan. I have a sim card from 2002, and it works fine with my dumb phone.
My sony ericsson C905A shows an "H" symbol as well as 3g and i can get the internet/data on it. however, on my international galaxy s2 , all i get is edge and i have no indication of either 3g or H+.
how would i be able to switch to the "4g" plan? what would i need to do when i go to the AT&T store?
4G from AT&T is HSPA+ I'm on AT&T and after some account hiccups now have 4G
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
okay... I need to do a speed test, but there is that new 4LTE (or something like that) isn't that the 'true' 4G?
There's HSPA+, which gives "4G"-esque speeds. I've gotten as high as 7 Mbps on it on my EU version phone running KE7. Currently available SGS2's don't support LTE; Samsung has announced a LTE version, but it is, as far as I know, not available just yet.
My understanding is that the AT&T version, due out next weekend, will NOT be LTE-capable.
The LTE version has only just come out in Korea, my guess is the US market may see it on the Verizon network first.

[Q] HTC Titan II -Shows 4G, but no data?

Hey guys. I have a HTC Titan II and started using it yesterday. I placed the sim card I had from my previous phone (xperia play r800a), and noticed that it shows I have a 4G connection. However, as soon as I open up the browser nothing happens. Says there is something wrong with my data connection. I took the card out and placed it back in my xperia play. Internet seemed fine.
Then I read that it may have to do with my sim not being a 4G LTE sim; so I went to the ATT store this morning and got a new sim. I asked if it was a 4G LTE sim, and the girl informed me that all newer sims are 4G LTE sims. I took the new sim and placed it in the T2. Still nothing.
So I am unsure as to what the issue is. I have a cheap unlimited ATT data plan that has been working like a champ for the last couple of years. I figured that at the very least, I would get 3G speeds on the T2 since I am not on a 4G plan.
Any advice? Thanks!!
You have to have your data plan updated to the LTE plan (you get to keep what ever data cap you have today, unlimited or else). You can do it by calling customer service or in AT&T stores. Otherwise, it will not work. The LTE connection uses pta APN which requires LTE data plan on your account.

Thanks for the info. I am currently paying $30 for unlimited data (non-smartphone) with texting. I am assuming when switching over to LTE that I'll be responsible for paying some sort of premium because I'm guessing they don't have non-smartphone LTE plans.
I managed to get data to work by editing the APN info on the phone. It works, but I do not think it's running at LTE speeds or even 4G (even though it says 4G at the top of my phone).

What APN did you enter? Just do following to get 4G speeds:
1) Add APN
2) wap.cingular
3) Reboot or wait 3-4 mins
I just switch to LTE APN. It is fast, but from what I'm reading online, I've set myself up for tighter AT&T controls around tethering, throttling etc. But, I can confirm that it is backwards compatible.

I went to the connection settings, pressed on "ADD APN". For the name, I entered, "AT&T HSPA+". That's it, and internet works. It says 4G at the very top of my phone, but not LTE. I assumed this was normal. Would entering wap.cingular be faster?
Thanks!
I think AT&T HSPA+ is supposed to be quicker than wap.cingular
I read it some place a few minutes ago but I lost the page. Someone ran a test and speedtest.net had higher speeds and lower pings.
You will need the pta APN to get LTE connection. You will need Phone APN to get real HSPA+ speed (if you want anything over 6mbps). Otherwise, wap.cingular gives you 3G speed (which all new AT&T phones will show it as 4G, lame).
Both pta and Phone APN requires specific data plan codes on your account (If you have LTE data plan, you can use both pta and Phone APNs but HSPA+/4G data plan can only use Phone APN).
AT&T did so exactly to prevent customers like you who have an old non-smartphone data plan to take advantage of its new high speed data network without paying for it.
In most places, HSPA+ speed is not much quicker than 3G/wap.Cingular beause AT&T's HSPA+ network is over congested. However, LTE is on a separate network and the data speeds are significantly faster than HSPA+.

Geez...tell me how you truly feel.
JK! Thanks for clearing that up.
LoL, nice editing. NBC should hire you
Now you have to decide whether to save $$ but use slower 3G data or pay up to trade for higher speed. You won't get to keep the unlimited because your current plan is not qualified smartphone plan. So, basically you are looking at $30 for 3GB + $20 for unlimited text.
Need a SIM card
I had the same problem as I got my phone free from a MS store (traded them my old windows mobile device for it). I ended up having to take the phone to an AT&T store and they stated that my SIM card would never work with the phone for data. It was a 3G SIM card. They also changed the data plan so maybe both are required.

Both are required. But if your existing SIM is new enough it should support LTE without problem (there was a specific SIM card ID range to support LTE).
BTW, if your phone is connecting on LTE, it will show LTE instead of 4G on the notification bar.

for whatever reason, I read somewhere around here that that particular SIM made your "smartphone exclusion" hold-up against most recent phones. So, you gave that benefit away - don't worry if you don't know much about it.
wap.cingular gave me data thanks! But I am a little confused is it 3g or HSPA+? I don't need to change my data plan for LTE (since it isn't in Seattle yet) but I want to change it if I am not getting HSPA+

HSPA+ in WP7 gets represented with an "H" or "4G"
3G gets represent with a regular "3G"
LTE with "LTE"
Most likely you are under HSPA+ ... Do a Speed Test with an app like "Bandwidth" to see where you max out and that should give you an idea if its 3G or H

it says 4g and I get about 3mbs I am assuming its HSPA+ thanks for clarifying!
All AT&T new phones, including iPhone with iOS5 update, will say 4G even if it is on 3G. It really doesn't matter much. 3G and HSPA+ in most places are same speed. You only need to worry about it if you want LTE. If you don't have LTE, leave it alone.
I have put both APNs mentioned and that seems to work for a little while, but eventually the data cuts out again.
Is this an issue similar to what is happening with the Lumina 900? Is this a Microsoft problem or AT&T? And is anyone else still having issues after updating the apn like I am?

Since my MMS and tethering no longer work with this phone, it looks as if I may have to switch out my plan(s) and fork over $70 ($50 data+$20 text). IMHO, a bit of a rip off...OR I can just go back to my xplay and everything will work as it was...but where is the fun in that?

HTC Amaze on Straight Talk-- ATT or Tmo sim??

Hi guys I an recently switching from Verizon over to Straight Talk to save some money. 45$ a month unlimited.. You can't beat it. Anywho here is my dilemma. I live in Michigan and out in the country on a lake where reception isn't that great as it is but it's still functional. I want to know if I should use the TMO Sim or the ATT Sim they offer. I already have a Tmo sim I can activate but if I do and the service sucks they said I need to change my number to get the att sim switched in. My question is will it give me any insight into my possible reception if I put in the sim b4 activating it and drive around? Bc it seems to show bars for awhile then just drop off and say no service after awhile for about 10mins then it comes in and out intermittently. Any insight is appreciated thank you!!
On another note I heard about some att /Tmo roaming agreement? If I could roam atts voice service all should be well right? Or is that not for mvno carriers? I really like my number or else I'd take the chance!

Consider looking into Walmarts T-mobile Prepaid 4G plan if the Straight Talk doesn't have good coverage.
$30 for 100 minutes, and unlimited text and data (5GIG of 4G data).
If you prepaid it with credit card, you get $5 off making it $25.
I love the plan, and only ONCE have gone over the 5G of data. Speeds average 2-6MB, and with good coverage up to 15-20MBps

Is Straight talk 4g service "LTE" ?
thinking of switching from simple mobile... do any of you guys have issues with throttling? simple mobile throttles same as t-mo does after 2GB... also, what SIM card do I need for it to work? I have an old at&t SIM and a couple old T-Mo SIMs... do they require you to use one of theirs? If so, where do you get it? I went by my local wally world and they only sold the stupid phones and re-up cards, no SIMs and the person that was available was zero help... any info would be GREATLY appreciated... I'm not too worried about the speed difference, I'm in a large metro area, so I'm sure it won't be a huge difference whether I use t-mo or at&t...
ok, well I found the SIM on their site, ordered it, got free shipping... will purchase the unlimited plan when I receive the SIM and will report back with some comparison (to SimpleMobile) photos... I just went the "unlocked GSM phone" route instead of choosing one or the other, which I guess means it's equivalent of going the att route...

Yeah..i did the same thing. Supposedly they pick best SIM for your area. I say if you know what phone you have and what service is better in your area, just pick it instead of letting them. I ended up with ATT and signal was horrible at my house, dropped calls all the time. So i recently swapped over to ST TMO SIM and it's been amazing. I had verizon and it was terrible (at my house), sprint was the worst, no signal whatsoever. I don't live out in the country or anything either. It's like a dead spot just at my house, my brother lives down one block from me and has verizon and is great for him.
Anyhow...ST TMO with a Samsung Galaxy Blaze gets 10MB/s down and 1MB/s up. Download speeds faster then my home ISP.
Only had ST TMO for a week and it's been alot better then ATT for me. So it will be trial and error. Whatever fits best for you, but what's good about it is that SIM card is only $15 if you have to try the other one.
Good luck!

I just bought the Tmo SIM, the ATT service was horrible (Orlando, FL) dropped more calls this month than I have in the last 3yrs... absolute SHYTE!!! FU ATT!!! soooooo happy that "merger" failed hard on it's face!!!
Just my two cents hope this clarifies st just pays Atat and t-mobile to use there network, servers etc. They can't alter it ie. Roaming agreements. So if you have.both sims try them both to see which works better t-mobile still gives 4g I don't think Atat can on st. Also ive changed a number from a phone to a sim while it was activated.

Important: When you buy a ST sim card you will have a choice between at&t or t-mobile networks.
http://www.straighttalk.com/shopsims
If you chose.. "Unlocked GSM Phone (Phone must operate in 850 and 1900 MHz bands)" this is the at&t network card.
If you chose.. "T-Mobile Compatible Phone" this is the t-mobile network card.
You can buy both cards and switch networks without losing your minutes or being charged for switching networks. In the your ST control panel both cards (after registration) will be listed as available options.

S9 Plus and T-mobile

Since moving to T-mobile I have noticed my data with this phone is a joke... I get more buffering and spotty data connection, then I did when it was on Sprint.. A friend of mine that use to have a S9+ Switched to a Iphone, and he claims his data service is much better... I have talked to T-mobile tech and recently did a network reset.. I asked the tech if this phone is suppose to show LTE or even gets LTE.. They claim it should show LTE in the nav bar, but only 4G.. I'm not sure if I should switch to a different brand of phone of just keep this one.

Fixed with a network refresh on T-Mobile side.
