Hello gents.
I have a 1 dag old Galaxy S 2 and it's all good so far. I have a question. The phone switches from 3g to h+ automatically. The it seems that when I am not actively transferring data it stays on 3g then as soon as I start downloading or browsing or whatever it switches to h+. Is this a battery saving feature? I the reason I ask is that sometimes it seems to be in a loop switching from 3g to h+.
Thanks!!

I'm having the same issue, but only since I updated to KG3. Originally I rooted my phone with:
CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4
No issue with H+ / 3G.
I then installed Lite'ning Rom v4.2 XXKG3 and the issue started. My modem (PHONE) was then updated to KG3:
PDA: I9100XXKG3
PHONE: I9100XXKG3
CSC I9100XEUD1
I reverted to a stock XXKG3, same issue.
First thing I did when I rooted with CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 was to backup everything. I reverted to my backup but obviously the modem remained the same:
PDA: I9100MUGKG2
PHONE: I9100XXKG3
CSC: I9100MBMCKG2
But I didn't have the issue anymore! So the modem update is not a fault here.
I did try to switch off fast dormancy, but it didn't change anything.
As you said, the phone goes to h+ when it starts transferring. My results with Speed Test remained the same, so I'm not to worried about it. I don't know how this impacts the battery. I can't really compare since now I use different cpu voltage.
Hmm. I will try downgrading to a KG2 kernel. Is this even doable / safe?
Thanks!!

That is totally normal I have that to, I think that is just for battery saving.

Yes it is, download the stock kernel here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
ZSKG2
OR
XXKG2
Then root with the correct ChainFire kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Please note that this wouldn't revert you to the exact software that was on the phone when you purchase it. The stock kernel from bell isn't available for download. Please note that I didn't try flashing to KG2 (only KG3) but I'm sure it's pretty safe.
Teslarage,
what are you running right now? You might already be to KG2... do *#1234# on your phone and past the info here
Thanks for the quick replies people!
I am running Cognition 1.31 with the ROM built in kernel which I believe is nepamphetamine (or something similar) along with the kg3 modem.
Would it be safe to downgrade the modem? I or should I try with a different kg2 kernel?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I tried with a different kernel, no cigar. Same issue...
Weird.
I'm pretty sure it's the modem. Any way to downgrade it? Flash the previous one with Odin? Which modem should I install?
I rooted my Bell SGS2 within hours of getting it, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't switching (3G / H / H+) before I rooted it and installed a custom ROM. It is now.
Some people here say the switching is normal, however I'm pretty sure this didn't occur on the stock Bell firmware. Maybe someone who hasn't rooted yet can confirm.
I've tried many roms (Villian, Cog, MIUI, DevNull) kernels (CF, Ninpo) and radios/modems (KG2, KG3) and the issue remains. I'm pretty sure the stock Bell firmware, specifically the MODEM, was customized and since it's not leaked we're SOL. My stock Bell f/w (modem and kernel) was MUGKG2.
I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to Samsungs, this is my first so I'm learning as I go here. But I've owned a few HTC's and never seen this issue. My Desire ALWAYS stayed on H with the same SIM card and on the Bell network.

You can flash any modem you like with ODIN but I assure you I've tried and the issue remains. I think we need the MUGKG2 one.
I flashed kernel oz_kg2 to root and unlock and I always have the H+ on. I don't think it should be anything to worry about since this technically is saving battery. Can you guys confirm that your phones aren't affected by the AOS bug on KG3?

Did a quick search for AOS and nothing much useful. Something about battery drain? Mine seems ok.
I wouldn't be concerned with the switching modes if I wasn't also getting intermittent connection problems. Sometimes it seems as if my data just disconnects. The data icon remains in the status bar but I can't surf, download market apps, check gmail, etc. Usually have to reboot.

AOS is at 6% with KG3
Took 2 flashes.. first time the bug remained.. AOS was 20% - 40%
GT-i9100M on Darky's KG3 Base Rom, Super Core Kernel, and KG3 Modem
Argh. I can't wait until somebody releases the stock modem / kernel / firmware for Bell. I'm going to flash back for sure. I find my WiFi performance pitiful on every ROM I've tried and the issue at hand in this thread is incredibely annoying
It's not the modem the problem, if a revert to my backup
PDA: I9100MUGKG2
CSC: I9100MBMCKG2
There is no switching with a KG3 modem
Maybe it's the CSC file since it's related to the country and carrier related settings? Any way to extract that data ?

I did peak at /system/CSCFiles.txt of the bell stock rom but didn't see anything striking... Only saw the bloatware from bell: UNO, nova, the gps app, selfserve app, etc.
To see if the CSC was at fault I tried upgrading to two different version of CSC but the update failed each time... not in odin but when the phone reboots for the first time...
Im also unsure if my gs2 is at fault or if its Bell's network. My d/u speeds are very inconsistant. Last night I was getting 5 down and 2 up and to day I tested with my bro who has a HTC incredible S on Telus. He got 8 down and 3 up while I was at 4 down and 1 up. What I found striking in that test is that telus uses Bell's network and that his phone is not 4g. I should be getting better speeds I think. What do you guys think.

Hi,
Can you use this modem for stock firmwares? Or is it just for cm7?
And is this the best modem for a I9100T which I am using on the optus network?
If not can anyone give me the best modem for my phone and network?
I have tried googleing it, but all the download links seem to be down.
Thanks heaps to anyone who can help
Cheers coreyb

Just because Omega doesn't include any other modem, it doesn't mean other modems won't work...
The modem is a completely different CPU/SoC which gets it's operating system from the efs partition and talks to the Android OS through an API.
I'm on modem ZNLF2 and it works flawlessly.

Just because Omega V8 is samsung XXLFB firmware version, on which any other Modem gives treble, so use only XXLFB with V8 as stated by the Dev. of Omega
Why don't you stick to stock XXBLFB
Have you tried making a voice call? Just to let you know that almost all the modems do not work with the new ota.

Hi
I'm just wondering if after flashing a new custom ROM (or indeed I started to mod my own rom from Wanam's de-odexed latest stock rom) should I flash my original CSC from 3Hutchinson UK (H3GALE4) or stick with the latest unbranded UK CSC? It's still unclear to me precisely what the CSC does?
Surely it is the radio/modem version that determines connection speeds/efficiency of the modem etc? Or could the CSC have special 3 mobile firmware for getting better connection with their network? - Or what I suspect is that it just loads the 3 network boot screen and installs the 3 app?
Thanks

Afaik csc file determines the country code and what apps are to be installed per country that samsung assigned, like bbc player for the UK. But it`s not that important to be honest.
Thanks,
So only the CSC is carrier specific? Radio/Modem is purely just firmware for the radio and modem? I ask because in the UK 3-Network transmit using UMTS (not GSM) on 2100MHz so I wondered if there was anything that could optimise this. It seems to me that ALL 3 phones in the UK use the NELE4 modem - is there a reason for this?
I'm on 3 in the UK had it for a few weeks now on le8 and le4 modem rooted and changed the kernel to siyah but don't want to flash a custom Rom yet for the csc reason and seen in a few places people losing imei number too is that them just being completely dumb tho and flashing incorrect roms etc?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I had read the same although I took precursive efs backup and immediate image of my initial stock. I've flashed through some nice ROMs but recently decided to make up my own from one of Wanams deodexed stock roms. However I have really liked the Omega rom so I may roll with that, but I have been reflashing the CSC to 3 H3GALE4 thinking perhaps it improves things for 3 users??? But I reckon moreliekly just provides the 3 splash screen on power up.
My interest in modems and/or CSCs is that my primary reason for the sgs3 is not so much a phone as my home internet provider as i live in v rural area yet with an anttenna I can get above 5mb/s whereas my land line can barely provide 1mb/s. So any modem/mod/hack which specifically improves this and perhaps even the software/driver behind tethering is what I'm keen on learning about.
Great phone though.
Amazing phone couldn't want more gui is so smooth I have from some where got on my internal sd a efs-backup.zip so I will back that up and try checkrom worst comes to I send it back

Well I tried Checkrom and that too is really really good. Prior to flashing a new custom rom I followed the instructions of flashing back to original stock and triangling away which worked absolutely fine too.
Yeah already tested triangle away works wonders with siyah kernel it dont even need to restart the phone great work on that chainfire

I'm sure whether or not I get terrible 3G speeds without the 3 modem or not
Poor speeds is often modem related try BULF1.
CSC can be copied out of original rom and replaced in a custom rom before flashing .
System CSC folder and CSC version text .
CSC is not required for a phone to work and is only a list of local area network connections on stock .

How weird I looked on kies this morning golf lf1 csc and lf6 Rom just upgraded running smooth had to re-root tho which was expected

Been running Turkbey Custom ROM for a month now, and 3 mobile CSC was not available in this ROM but it has had no effect on anything and everything I do, and installed bbc iplayer and 3 network app automatically, so I agree CSC is not that important.

I've been doing some tests and I am *begining* to think that nele4 modem is the best on the 3-network in UK. Will update after some other tests.

Thanks for info. I'll try BULF1 in my little ongoing tests.
Does anyone know of a custom mod/app that replaces the stock "tethering" software with a better one? I ask because I can get 10Mb/s mobile data connection on the phone but when I tether my laptop, that will only reach 4-5Mb/s. I want my phone to act as good modem router - seems the stock one isn't as good as it could be??
I'm on 3 UK, using Omega10, all modems included with Omega worked well, you can try flashing any modem, I'm currently on lg6

I've been at sea for anumber of weeks so I have only just caught up with this thread again. I have tried a number of modems (and given them a few days to "chill out"). All though I still do not have any quantative proof it *seems* as if the original NELE4 modem works the best - by best I don't mean connection speeds but in the UK without moving location I seem to get H+ more consistently whereas other modems would *seem* to jump between 3G, H and H+ more randomly. These are only thoughts - my observations may be completely wrong. WOndering if anyone else has noticed similar?
Even if I am not in the UK, I would like to confirm my understanding of CSC as I just found out that my phone's status is CSC: unknown after I flashed the newest 4.0.4 update for my region (TH, I9300T).
As I understood CSC does not impact the phone a lot, only the region specific play store settings and networks. Currently I face no problem with the phone at all, normal reception etc., hence would you still recommend flashing the correct CSC to remove the "unknown" status or just keep it like it is and wait for JB later? (I am aware that CSC flashing will format my phone)
Thanks

I really am not the best person to answer this I am afraid although does reflashing your CSC really format the phone?? I thought you could use ODIN to just reflash a CSC and leave the modem and FW intact but I may be seriously wrong so don't do it on account of what I've said! Hopefully someone will clarify.
As has been said by others on this thread (many thanks) I really doen't think the CSC matters that much at all - the only difference I notice between the 3UK CSC (H3GALE4) and a non-branded UK CSC is that I lose the Three logo on boot and BBC Iplayer and Twitter App aren't installed.
So basically I have a 4.3 stock rom on my S3 (International) and I tried to flash Blekota Note 4 rom but when i choose an operator its says "Selected network not available".
I tried it with Blekota S5 rom and same thing happened.
At the first time i flashed each rom I didnt have any signal at all but that i flashed 4.4.2 modem from some youtube video I saw and there was signal but Emergency calls only and the "Selected network not available" when I choose an operator.
I have no idea what I should do that will make it work because i like it better with those roms.
What should I do?

Problem is you screwed up your efs folder. First, I suppose you loose your device serial number. Second, you probably flashed modem with Ariza patch.
Now you need always use patched modem and unsecured kernels. Or repair your efs via box, or backup.
Flash CM11, CM11 dedicated Boeffla kernel and that modem you have used previously. Or download any modem patched with Ariza's method.
If it's work than you can try cm12... But always with Boeffla (or any kernel which didn't check modem integrity) and this hacked modem.
