There are a lot of users reporting WIFI disconnect/reconnect issues with the Galaxy S3 across all US variants and even the International version.
Open and unprotected wifi network
There have been users reporting that using dual encryption AES + TKIP cause numerous issues and using one encryption will decrease the frequency of the disconnect/reconnects but not eliminate it.
So to see if we can find the cause of this, I'm going to need your help.
I would like those users who are experiencing this issue, to post the following information:
Carrier:
Memory Capacity: (16GB/32GB)
Rooted? (Yes/No)
If so, which ROM:
Network Type: 2.4GHz(b/g/n), 5GHz(a/n)
Network Security Type: (None, WEP, WPA-PSK(TKIP), WPA2-PSK(AES), TKIP + AES
Security Encryption: (Automatic/Shared Key)
Are there multiple networks near you?
Issues you are having:
Please try to keep chatter to a minimum. Only try to post results. I will update the OP if there is a discovery or if there is a solution found!
----------------------------------------------------------------
Causes:
Unknown. Samsung knows about the issue and is working to fix it.
Solution:
There is a method that will reduce this from occurring but not eliminate the issue:
Go to your dialer and press *#0011#
"Menu Key"
WIFI
Turn Off power saver option for WIFI
No problem here

I think that you need to add the model of router and the length of the key to this questionnaire. People are reporting no problems with home but problems at the office, etc.

Note re: those seeing no issues
I was claiming that mine worked fine. But then I set up a task in Tasker that relied on a continued Network connection, and then found it problematic. I ended up setting up a task to say "WiFi Connecting" when it was connecting, and "Wifi Disconnected" when it disconnected. Now I realize it is happening, sometimes multiple times per hour.
I would bet that some of those saying no problems just don't know it.
Netgear WNDR3700 V1 with WPA2-PSK
No problems whatsoever. Keeps a constant connection, also it is able to connect to my router from a seriously long way away. Was walking around the apartment complex this evening and I joke you not, easy 50 yards away it connected and kept it and it was very usable. Obviously a little slow but not by much. The GSIII wifi is great here.
I would like to mention that my Netgear N300 WNR3500L won't connect at ALL when set to Auto and "Up To 300mbps". "Up to 145 mbps" is okay, usually negotiates 65-72mbps. The encryption is WPA2-PSK AES. Interestingly, when my WRT610v2 is set to 40mhz on the 2.4 band, the phone will connect intermittently and making the router 20mhz on the 2.4 band doesn't offer relief.
Does logcat show wifi connects and disconnects?

Issues you are having: When the phone goes into sleep, it loses the WiFi connection every time unless I set WiFi power saving to off.
I think it's important to notice that I'm 100% sure it's a quality control issue: my girlfriend, who got her phone exactly at the same time as me, seems to have a better device, strangely. Her WiFi *never* drops off (especially when she's at my place, where mine does when it goes in deep sleep), her touchwiz is strangely faster (and that is WITH an animated wallpaper!). If anything, she has a white device while I have a pebble blue.

The user who goes by the name of cary328is has suggested the following which they claim “was learned from XDA developers:
1. Go to your phone dialer
2. Dial *#0011#
3. When you see the “ServiceMode” screen, press the left menu button
4. Select “WiFi”
5. See that “Wifi Power Save Mode” button that is “ON” – well turn it “OFF”
6. Exit this menu, turn off your Wifi and turn it back on. If you already entered all your wifi credentials, forget your network info (remove it) and re-enter it again.”

Sigh, doesn't work. Its not even as good for strengthening the gs3 signal as the plain power save being turned off. It is not a solution, even a temporary one. FWIW, Samsung is very interested in finding a solution and hopes to have one as soon as possible, but it is still under analysis. They've called back.

Might not be entirely on track here, but I managed to resolve all of my wifi issues with my Linksys E4200 and E3200 in the office.
Maybe whoever is talking to Samsung can pass this along, if WMM is set on the e4200/e3200 to disabled, wifi will fail, most of the time it won't connect at all and if it does connect, it's spotty as hell.
Enable WMM, auth is nearly instant and connection is stable.
Hopefully this helps someone.
Side note: WMM is burried in the QOS menu of the router.
If you are on Sprint, disable the Sprint Automatic Connection. This resolved my issue with intermittent WIFI connection.

I got my HTC Hero on Orange in the UK last week.
I am getting an issue where a normally stable wireless network will be knocked out if i connect the Hero on Wifi.
I know its not the radio - connects fine on WEP secured work network and on the open connection on the train and at McDs
I have done a fair bit of googling and RTFM and basically found lots of router specific issues on Android phones but nothing that looks like the same issue i have encountered except one on the Android community forum where no one has a solution or suggestion i havent already tried.
XDA developers was a great help with unlocking and flashing a ROM to my Trion so i thought i would amend the post i made there and see if i get any more expert opinion on here. Apologies for the length of the post - will post ROM and build numbers if that helps (and someone tells me where to look on the phone!)
Conscious this is a lenghty post (hello all!) but thought as i struggled to find anything it might help others in the same situation if i detail the issues and what i have looked at and hypothesised that i need to try to resolve this - in case anyone else has similar issues.
Netgear DGFV338 ADSL and Ethernet VPN & Firewall router.
Three wireless laptops and Sony Ericsson G900 all connect fine
Laptops run XP Pro, Windows 7 RC and a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu machine
desktops (all on gigabit backbone) run similar mix but only lose internet after router and modem have borked.
I am running this on a 20 MB Virgin connection which is usually faultless (3 years or so uptime not counting upgrades to the modem). Speed or timeout is not an issue - usually get between 12MB and 17MB DL and 700kbps UL
As soon as i connect with the Hero i can use the Wifi but briefly (one web page, start to load Market etc) - basically network detected and WPA-PSK TKIP connected, IP allocated and showing in wireless clients table of router.
I was running restricted MAC access and IP/MAC binding as i have ports open for the 360's and the Wii and want to restrict access to these devices only but removed this as part of the troubleshooting.
Shortly afterwards 20 seconds to 1 minute after connection the wifi drops - all connections lost, laptops lose connections and i lose connection to Virgin. It requires a full reboot of modem and router with the Hero off to recover a connection.
I wiped the router and all the security and all the other pcs etc work fine
then turn on hero - same story. So its not any of my more esoteric and paranoid router settings - i dont think.
Been on the Netgear forums and apart from some issues with the G1 and AES on home routers (mine is the full enterprise kit metal case) i find nada
Troubleshooting to date has narrowed it down to a couple of choices.
I know my router but i am brand new to this phone so some of this is pure guess work. One suggestion was ARP floods from multiple requests from phone getting it blocked by the firewall. Except traffic logs dont support this
Encryption support:
I use WPA PSK TKIP - this is detected as WPA Personal by the Hero but it can connect to router when i use the pass and this setting so i am working on the basis this is supported and correct.
I have read about issues with poor AES support on some routers which are fixed by a firmware update but have the same issue with other devices on AES so would prefer TKIP. So it could be encryption handling - initial connection works but error logging could crash the router if this is not working correctly
Anybody know if the WPA personal listed for connections is TKIP or AES?
I cant find any clear information on this.
Orange DNS or restricted gateway settings:
This appears to be the main symptom - i lose DNS support and therefore access to the internet. Turning off the Hero and reconnecting the laptop gives me access to the router but i need to reboot the modem to get my IP back (dynamic but changes every 12 months or so) the hypothesis is that the Orange connection in this build has the DNS hardcoded to go through their DNS servers which either Orange or Virgin systems dont like and boots my connection off the internet. Bit of a long shot but as i cant seem to find any way to fix static IP or DNS listings it could be the case as i cant switch to OpenDNS as i would to test this otherwise.
Only comes to mind as the first day with the phone (when Orange 3G was not active) i didnt have this problem - wifi on phone and laptop worked fine and both together
Bit of a longshot but the symptoms point to a DNS corruption if it isnt my router treating repeated WPA or DNS requests as a DOS attack. It could be DHCP creating errors but i can bind a MAC to specific IP to override this on the router. It sees the Hero, recognises the MAC and adds it to the restriction whitelist.
I havent checked ARP logging but that theory could pan out as its unlikely DNS would take down the router and modem - ARP or DOS lockdown could.
WiFi Channel
I run channel 11 due to neighbours wifi interference - Wii wont work at all with default channel.
I cant find the default channel information on the Hero but would assume it is 6 like most devices.
this one is strange - if it is the Wifi Channel then seeing the router should be a problem and connection shouldnt happen at all. It seems unusual to allow a connection but then crash the router as it is getting traffic on a different channel.
Could be another side effect of my routers firewall blocking suspicious traffic but seems unlikely.
As you can see a fair amount of things have been tried and i am still getting nowhere.
I need to try the encryption settings - does anyone know what the WPA setting is on the Hero and which encryption is supported/offered as standard?
I need to try changing my router back to channel 6 - does anyone know the default channel or how to change this in the Hero?
I need to try static rather than DHCP (but on the phone as already have tried forcing IP from router) - how do i get to these settings?
I need to try static DNS rather than Dynamic (router proxy of Virgin DNS)
I do have a Linksys WRT54g (three of them - one vanilla, one Sveasoft and one Tomato) which i use for outside events at work so i could swap one of those in but i suspect its a combination of Hero settings and router settings and i would like to get my main router set up (and keep the 8 ports) than swap back to the older WRTs and have to set up my Xbox 360s to get around the issue they have with being on a switch with a different subnet and not connecting to Windows 7 media centre
Basically i have tried most of the things i can try with the access i have on the phone and my knowledge of its default settings. What apps can i try to give me control of the networking and access section?
Otherwise, loving the phone. Better than the reviews and whilst not lightning fast its a damn sight quicker than an overclocked Trion i was running before (which worked fine on the same router and WPA Personal)
I am liking Android, glad to not be locked into the Apple tax/ecosystem and realising that WinMo has a looong way to come; even with the help HTC and xda developers offer to make better use of the hardware.
But i am heavy internet user and i cannot risk running my Hero at home on 3g when i have 500MB cap and a £3 a MB over limit charge with no notice from Orange to say i am near limits.
Any ideas? feedback? similar tales of woe?
Possible solution
Ohkaaay - found advanced settings so that helped! n00b error
Removed all security.
Changed channel to 6
connects
change to channel 11
connects but crashes router
reboot router and modem
change back to channel 6
change security to WPA Personal AES
connects
doesnt crash router
change to channel 11
connects
doesnt crash router
i appear to have a working connection and there is no way i would have made it through this post with the Hero on before i made these changes
weirdly i now have two identical entries in the wireless networks list
one says SSID_name Connected
two says SSID_name WPA Personal
remove remembered networks
Hero autodetects my SSID_name
sign in with AES password
two listings in wifi list again, same as before.
So it looks like WPA TKIP doesnt work on my router with Hero
AES does.
Channel 6 works with no security
Channel 11 doesnt
BUT... enable AES and Channel 11 works.
Guess the Channel 6 signal issue interferes with the TKIP or something
But i can report that on Netgear router WPA Personal AES works ok, which apparently on the pre-Cupcake G1 was a known issue.
Apologies to post and then reply to my own post but this might help someone
I can confirm your findings regarding WPA + TKIP vs WPA2 + AES.
I was running WPA + TKIP on a Linksys WRT54GX and experienced major connectivity issues with my Hero (although is did not crash the router). Did not experience this problem with my iPhone 3G.
Changed configuration to WPA2 + AES and Hero does now work without any issues.
I know this:
A. Is fairly obvious
and
B. Is not particularly helpful to you
However - if any device (regardless of whether it is buggy or not) is crashing your router, the router clearly has buggy firmware itself and is at fault. Router firmware should be robust to the unexpected, especially on wifi as this could be prone to denial of service attacks from anyone happening to be walking by. A router that is crashed by an attempted client connecting is a bad sign.
My personal advice would be to change to a decent standalone router. I use a Buffalo WHR-G54S flashed with Tomato firmware v1.21.8005 (with a seperate linksys Adsl2+ modem to provide internet). It is working flawlessly for me in WPA + TKIP/AES with no issues.
Hi,
so kernel sources are released. Is there any fix for hero's wifi problems? I mean dropping connection to AP. It is so annoying, I tried to do everything: change channel, mode, encryption... Nothing helped. It is Linksys wrt160nl. The same applies to other networks (some public hot spots).

Could you paste your wifi settings? (mode, encryption mode, channel)
Using the Modaco custom ROM 2.8 (never had problems with modaco ROM and generic)
Router: Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.25 firmware
Wireless Mode: Access Point
B/G Mode: Mixed
Channel: 1 - 2.412 Ghz (try a free one)
Security: WPA / WPA2 Personal
Encryption: AES
Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds
No Mac Filter
Under Advanced Settings I changed "Transmit Power" to 251mW for a better signal, the rest are default values.
Try to update your router firmware

In case you haven't done so yet. Check out the Wifi Sleep Policy (access by pressing menu when you are in wifi menu). Normally the Wifi is turned off then the screen is turned off which can cause problem.

Hi got similar problem with my router netgear wnr2000.what i found funny is that when i reset the router, the phone connects perfectly to the router, but after abt 24hrs or so, it fails to connect.even if i reboot my phone, or reset the connection on phone.fails to connect.it will only connect when i reboot the router. i will try the 'aes' encryption n see if that helps.will update if it works
Thanks for your replies. Please could other members share their experiences, used options and solutions. This issue is too common to simply forget it. I am trying to find some kind of pattern or special options, it requires.
i dont have a problem with wifi apart from the wont find or connect to n-range device other wise i use wifi all the time it never drops, on stock orange uk firmware
I have a Sitecom WL-173 router.
I cannot connect at all. I can, but only with no or WEP security. That is no option for me.
When I use WPA or WPA2 my Hero does view my network, but does not connect.
I called HTC about this problem. He told me that they do not support all routers. He could not tell me which they support and which not.

I'm sorry, it hurt even more when i was sitting there pissed off that my Hero wouldnt connect to the Wifi!!!
I have Virgin 50meg at home no problem at all, went to my GF's who has basic Virgin cable 10meg on netgear G and would not connect at all.
No idea why, as it should be all fine!
I have the same problem. It is so ****in annoying. My router is a Linksys WRT54G with Tomato firmware v1.25. Router is in "G only mode", WPA-2 PSK-AES security, I've set a static local IP for the phone, the phone's wireless is set to always ON... I basically tried everything I could think of. Ended up rooting the phone and installing Modaco 2.9... but didn't change anything. The only way I can get it work again when it drops is shut the Wi-Fi off then on...
Worst of all this is the problem seems widespread (but not universal)... What the **** does HTC think putting a ****in smartphone on the market with defective Wi-Fi... This is non-sense.
I really hope someone comes up with a fix or HTC updates this... otherwise we might want to start thinkin bout class action.

Is it a router setup or a Hero setting?
Pleaes explain if it's one of the options
probs here too ...
Linksys WAP54G v3.1
vs
HTC Hero
was working perfectly for first month or so, but has been getting worse and worse. ie, for a few weeks it would see the wifi but would usually fail to connect. now I'm lucky if it can see it at all!
have reflashed the wap with dd-wrt and experimented with a lot of settings. no diff.
have reflashed the hero with hero21 comunitry v1.6. no diff. (and also latest radio)
it just starts and stops when it feels like it.
oh, and my eeepc works fine on the same wifi, so I know it's not some wap screw up.
tried every tip I can find like 'use mixed mode' or 'g only', etc etc.
I am starting to think it's a hardware fault?
Same problem
Siemens Gigaset Tiscali modem with wpa psk2 tkip and T-mobile hero rom.
Sees the modem and connects with security first time but then says 'remembered out of range' on wifi settings but interestingly in wifi buddy it constantly has the syncing symbol next to the network.
Really annoying.
I've tried WEP and security off, wireless g only etc etc.
I have problems too but seems different to yours... but who knows : in fact i can't connect to wifi when the SSID is masked. Even if - or course - i put manuualy the ssid before with the good wep key. It happens on a livebox ( orange box )... but if i press the button to show the wifi network - it has to be made when you connect a device for the first time on this box - then it connects to the network... else it tells me that the network is out of range...
So does the wifi on hero has problem with masked SSID ? To compare i never had this problem - on the same box - with the touch diamond and the touch hd... and at home, not masking the ssid, the connection is ok without doing anything.
Ciao

I had the same problem with a Zyxel 660 router. I was able to connect to the wifi (WPA/PSK enable) but there was no data transfer possible.
So I updated the Radio ROM to the 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29 version and it solved the problem.
Hi
I have Wireless internet at home with 2 available access points, for some strange reason, my Hero (T-Mobile) insists on connecting to the weaker signal, even if I try changing it to connect to the stronger signal, it re-connects to the weaker signal then disconnects and connects back to the stronger signal, I have reset the phone to factory default as I had other issues with it but this does not seem have resolved the wifi issue, any ideas?
p.s. if we can avoid the "use the search button" that would be good
T-Mobile G2 Touch
Firmware 1.5
Baseband Version: 63.18.55.06FU_6.35.07.08
Build: 2.73.110.26 CL#69351
Software Version: 1.0.0.A6288
I think there may be apps in the market to help this issue.
Search the market for Wifi and see what you get.
Sorry can't be more specific as I don't have this problem myself.
I have tried that before, most of the apps seem to be either a wifi switch (on/of) or a wifi scanner,
thanks for the response
The problem could be wireless interference or other issues with the wifi router. The stronger signal (I'm assuming this is your own wireless router) may drop its signal, if only for an instant, due to wireless interference or other issues, causing the phone to switch to a more stable, albeit weaker, signal.
The first thing I would do is try changing the wireless channel on the router. 99% of routers default to channel 6. If there are several wifi signals in your area, open or secured, there's a good chance most of them are on channel 6. I'd suggest channel 11 myself, but you can try any of them.
If changing the channel doesn't work, you can try adjusting the more advanced settings, such as setting it to 11g-only instead of b/g. Other settings you could adjust are:
- DTIM Interval
- Beacon interval
- CTS protection
- RTS threshold
- Frame burst
- Preamble type
- Authentication type
Of those advanced settings, I would go for preamble type first, as it's the safest to play around with if you don't know what you're doing. As far as the other advanced settings, I'd do a google search to figure out what they mean before messing with them too much. I could explain them all, but I'm not here to write an essay
Note: Not all routers allow you to change all of these settings. Particularly cheaper routers will have far fewer advanced options than what I've listed here.
Hope this helps!
thanks for that, ill try changing it to channel 11 and try again, when i dop a wifi scan, it picks up about 7-8 different secudred AP's so it may well be the interference,
thanks muchly

I have a Cicso E3000 that has two radios in it. one is 5Ghz and one is 2.4Ghz. They're both hidden. the only time I can get a connection is when the 2.4Ghz radio is broadcasting its SSID. Here are the settings on that page when it works:

I can hide the network and the TB looses its connection and unhide the network ant the connection restored. Am I missing something obvious? I've had this working on every other device (computers, PDSa, phones) that I've ever tried.
Any ideas?
my hidden network is fine. Even activating at bestbuy i used their hidden network, although theirs was unsecured
sent from my personal space using my thunderbolt
My TB works fine with my hidden wifi SSID. Linksys WRT54G.
Its got to be the router then. Though I can't for the life of me figure out what it could be. Back to Google I go.
Fixed it.
Chances are your Linksys E2100L and my Cisco E3000 (Linksys) have the same issue.
I was messing around with the router's management interface:
On the "Wireless -> Basic Wireless Settings" page, I had Mixed selected for Network Mode. Then I set it for Wireless-N Only and got a error message stating that my "Wireless Security Mode" (WPA2/WPA Mixed) was incompatible with "Wireless-N Only". The message told me that if I wanted to use "Wireless-N Only" Network Mode, I had to use "WPA2-Personal" or WPA2-Enterprise" Security Mode. (I'm not really sure what the difference is between the three - Mixed/Personal/Enterprise) I put it back to Mixed.
On the Wireless -> Wireless Security page I had WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode selected. When I changed it to WPA2-Personal - Connected!!
I hope this helps. May not be applicable to other non-Linksys/Cisco wireless routers.
i was bummed out i dont have wpa Enterprise. I cant connect to my work Wifi....thank god for awesome LTE!!!!
Just got a Wifi/3G Flyer today, running Gingerbread 2.3.3. and software version 1.56.720.2. I have a WPA2-PSK secured Belkin wifi router at home. Currently, it has 2 laptops and 2 phones (BB & Galaxy S2) connected without any problems.
My Flyer refuses to recognize the router, but it shows up my neighbor's similar WPA2 secured SSIDs instead - (so presumably the wifi hardware is working).
I have already tried/checked the following:
Router's SSID is not hidden.
Router supports push button WPS - does not work with the Flyer though it configured my Samsung Galaxy S2 perfectly fast.
Rebooted router.
Changed router security to none, WEP 64 bit and WEP 128 bit.
Manually entered settings - it just says my network is 'not in range' despite my sitting right next to it.
My router settings are:
Authentication - WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK
Algorithm - AES
Wireless channel - auto.
Wireless mode - b/g/n all supported.
Is there a fix for this that doesn't involve rooting the device?
Update: Used the software update to get it to 2.3.4 and software version 2.27.720.1, and it still is showing up every goddamn wifi network in the vicinity other than my own one
change your channel from Auto to channel 10 or 11. Normally this will not affect your other devices. It seems that the Flyer is quite sensitive for this kind of 'problems'
Holy quack, that worked!
Thank you so much! I set the channel to 11, after which it started detecting the network, but would connect and instant disconnect. A reboot fixed it for good!
